4 Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, Summer is on its way...we Edition 121 hope! Stephen, Hayden and myself, with my Mum and Dad, have just returned from a fantastic week away on the Island of Santorini, Greece. The weather was perfect, not too hot but warm enough to swim in the sea and Debbie & Stephen Corney sunbathe on the black with our son Hayden volcanic beach of Perissa. Since their season had not yet begun, there were no huge crowds, but enough going on to keep us entertained. The pool at the hotel had water in it too, which I was pleased about, having been disappointed in Spain this time last year. With Hayden, who loves his swimming so much, it can be pretty disheartening seeing an empty hole that needs renovating instead of blue glistening water. We stayed at a place called “Happy Fish” (quite appropriate) and I would highly recommend it. The local people were lovely and we were well looked after. An excellent week all round! Back to reality now, though you will read in “The Adventures of Nellie” that we have a good old British camping trip lined up for August! We do hope you enjoy reading our articles here in The Ferndown & West Parley Directory. Please use the trades and services inside and do mention us when making any calls or bookings. SPECTREK – recycling your specs New glasses can be expensive and are quite unaffordable in many parts of the world. Old glasses are often thrown away, but they can be recycled. Wimborne and Ferndown Lions, along with other Lions clubs, have been collecting unwanted pairs of specs which are then refurbished, cleaned and graded and prepared for distribution in third world countries where eye care is often unavailable and lens making facilities are nonexistent. Over the years Lions in the UK Southern Region have collected nearly 3 million pairs. This year Wimbor ne and
Ferndown Lions themselves have collected 4,400 pairs and the total assembled from our area is 17,285 pairs. Bournemouth, B o s c o m b e , C h r i s t c h u rc h , Lymington, Poole and Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Clubs all contributed. The club would like to thank the local opticians and doctor’s surgeries who have contributed to the collecting process. As many species’ natural habitats have diminished over the years, the importance of gardens supporting wildlife has become immeasurable, and Dorset Wildlife Trust’s competition encourages wildlife enthusiasts to create a haven for all sizes and species of wildlife. By creating a wildlife friendly environment you also benefit from having a stunning outdoors space with glorious colours and by being able to observe the many wildlife denizens of your creation from your doorstep. The main focus is perhaps the choice of right plants; choose a mix of preferably native flowers and other plants to provide nectar and pollen for as long as possible. Bees, butterflies and other insects will grace your creation with their presence, carrying out their invaluable function of pollination. Queens 90th Birthday celebration in the village
A celebration event will be held in the Memorial Hall and on the Recreation Ground on 12th June. There will be running events, stalls, music and amusements. Lots of Family fun! Posters with full details will be put up and leaflets distributed in May.
Bournemouth 7s Festival
This year’s festival is from 27th to 29th May. Organisers have made great efforts to minimise the impact on West Parley with additional policing on site and up to Parley Cross and with local security and litter patrols. Hopefully this year’s event will pass off without too many problems. We are dependent on the direction of the wind as to how many of us are affected by the noise from the music but if any residents have any problems with what is happening they can phone the event Control Room on 01202 611272 or text on 07531754767 and they will deal with any issues. The music goes on till 1am but the sound levels are monitored by the Environmental Health Officer who is always on site. The Parish Council does get details of any incidents at the site and complaints are fortunately very few in number.
Dorset Best Kept Village
After entering the South and South East in Bloom competition for the last couple of years, the village has been entered for the Dorset Best
Volunteers break from building new play area Kept Village competition. The main competition covers public areas such as play and park facilities, public buildings, churches, businesses and roads and lanes. We hope residents and businesses can have a look at the outside of their property to see if any tidy up is needed. In a special People’s Project award, Parley Wood has been entered in view of the transformation of the area by village volunteers. The volunteers have ended their Winter work sessions as the bird nesting season has started. The clearance of overgrown holly, silver birch and hazel has been going on since last October and large areas are now much more open and bright that will encourage a wider variety of flora and fauna in the 17 acre Wood. Defined paths have been created round much of the Wood and a large amount of wood chippings have been put down to make the pathways walkable in all weathers. Have a look round the Wood some time.

New Woodland play area
Don’t forget that the Parish Council web site www.westparley-pc.gov contains lots of up to date local news, details of community groups, local history and general information relevant to residents.
This is being built by West Parley volunteers next to the existing children’s play area in the Recreation Ground. It is for smaller children to use and is being made of pre-used wood, tree trunks from recently felled local trees and cut branches from Parley Wood. The aim is to create a very low cost play area where the children can use their imagination to create their own play settings.
Change of Councillors
Two local residents have just joined the Parish Council. Jonathan Heath and Mary Court are keen to be involved in helping local people and doing their bit to improve the village. Unfortunately Malcolm Plascott has resigned for personal reasons and John Cullen has had to resign for health reasons after a very enjoyable 5 years on the Council. Buggy Walk
Just dropped your children off at Parley First School and want to chat and get some exercise with other Mums and Dads? What is “Phishing” and should I be concerned? “Phishing” is defined as the “fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, online”. Its hard to imagine in reality we would open our doors to a total stranger and hand over our banking details and personal passwords without question. In reality by not being vigilant and ensuring that systems and practices are up to date millions of private individuals and businesses are leaving themselves open to such practices on a daily basis. How will my Executors know what assets are in my estate on my death? I am a very private person and I do not wish them to have this information during my lifetime. The simplest thing is to keep a list of all your assets somewhere at your home and to advise your Executors where this list can be found in the event of your death. Please include on the list all your financial assets, including savings, bonds, ISAs, life policies and any pensions that you may have and that the contract details are up-to-date and should have the name, address and reference/ customer number so that each asset c an be traced easily. It is best if, rather than redoing the list each time you change investments, you keep it up to date on a rolling basis. This will allow your Executors to see quickly what investments you owned, when you sold or encashed them
So how can you best protect yourself? 1. Be wary of emails asking for confidential information, especially of a banking nature. Legitimate organisations will not request information via email. 2. Don’t be pressured into giving personal information. Phishers will adopt scare tactics. If in doubt contact the organisation directly for confirmation. 3. Look out for generic emails, e.g. Dear Customer. 4. Never open attachments from an unknown source, These may contain viruses enabling phishers to remotely access your computer. 5. Never access a website using email links. Input the web address directly into your browser. 6. Maintain effective software to combat phishing. The Ferndown Police Community Office is located in The Barrington Centre in Penny’s Walk. We are operated by Police Volunteers and are open daily (except Sunday) from 10.00 until 12.00. Please come in and see the wide variety of security devices and leaflets that we have. For those of you with French Doors we have a demonstration of the Patlock. This is being promoted by National Neighbourhood Watch. Most burglaries are at the weakest point at the rear of the property, usually French Doors. This device fits to the door handles as in the photograph. We do not sell this product at the moment but do have an order form to purchase direct from the manufacturer at a discount. At the moment we are concentrating on bicycles. With the darker nights there are still riders without light, we have a set of red and white lights for £2. There are still bikes being stolen. We have an Alarmed Cycle Padlock for £8, a D Lock for £8 and a Cable Lock for £4. Bikes should be marked in case they are stolen and recovered by the Police. We have a system of marking with labels which are registered with a national database, this costs £5 per bike, you can also mark with a UV Marker Pen which available for free along with a leaflet on which you can list items that are marked. We also have a UV Light Keyring. This has a UV light for checking your marking, a white light and a laser pointer. Garden Shed and Outbuildings are still being targeted due to the large amount of valuable items kept there, you can discourage criminals by fitting a Shed Alarm which is available at £10. We also have an Alarmed Padlock at £11, this will activate if tampered with. During Office hours we can be contacted on 01202 876219, but please be aware that this number should not be used instead of 999 (a crime is being committed or life is in danger) or 101 for other incidents. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van For those who are new to the area, or have are receiving your local Directory for the first time (as we have extended our reach recently), I would like to (re) introduce you to Nellie. Nellie is a Nissan Elgrand Campervan. She is somewhat overweight with long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs... and she is getting on a bit. She is over 200,000kms old in fact. Can you believe it? So Nellie has been around and sometimes has a cheeky sense of humour to get her through the day. She has been part of the family for three and a half years and takes us all over Dorset, Purbeck and Hampshire for trips out. These little ‘stories’ can give you an idea of where to go, what to do, hopefully make you smile and help brighten up your day. They are fun and not meant to be taken too seriously, though occasionally Nellie has some sound advice she

Last month Nellie was rather excited as we have booked a camping trip to Devon in August where Hayden, our son will take part in his first Surf Life Saving Competition in the sea. Wow, we can’t wait! Hayden has been a keen swimmer for some time and joined the Branksome Chine Surf Life Saving Club just a few months ago. That was Nellie’s idea, for those who remember one of my last stories. She is very happy to keep Hayden off the computer as much as possible and out enjoying himself. This can be a challenge as we all know... Well, in preparation for our full week’s camping trip Nellie decided we needed some new equipment. After all she knows how much I like to sit in the sun, drinking

coffee, WATCHING Hayden running around. So off we all set for Camping World on Ringwood Road at Three Legged Cross. What a place! Nellie was dazzled. Everything you need for camping whether it is a new sleeping bag, a huge tent or awning, barbecue equipment, cups and saucers, mugs (always useful...), chairs (even more useful), gas, pipes for this, pipes for that, clothes, shoes, the list goes on and on and all at GREAT prices! We wandered around for ages. Once Hayden had what he wanted he suggested he went to keep Nellie company in the car park. A very good excuse me thinks as his phone with his games were there awaiting him. Still he had been off the electronics for at least half an hour! The staff at Camping World are extremely helpful and very patient. They have to be with me, as I was trying this chair, that lounger, looking at the different patterns on the crockery. Well you have to get it right don’t you? We can’t have Nellie having all sorts of odd colours and patterns. That just wouldn’t be right. Really! Well we got all that we wanted. I now have a very comfortable deluxe

recliner with a cup holder for that very important cup of coffee made with Nellie’s bright red whistling kettle, small chairs for the beach and walks, a new table and chairs for meal times, a bright light for the awning so I can see where I am going at night (it can get embarrassing in the dark, tripping over all the bags and shoes, suddenly hearing “aaahhh... clunk” coming from the tent...), new cutlery and crockery so I can leave the kitchen alone, a windbreak as will be camping in England after all, and a small cafetiere for those ‘stronger, real coffee’ moments. Nellie was extremely happy with all her new belongings and excitedly wanted to try them all, as soon as we were home. Us girls do like our shopping trips don’t we. Where will Nellie take us next...? Why I Joined a Gym It had been a nice lunch; salad leaves, quiche, potato salad, small beer and a lot of laughter. Our Fremantle hosts had done us proud. The trip of a lifetime to sunny Australia was turning into the holiday of a lifetime. Each day as it unfolded was a joy – new sights, new sounds, empty wide roads and the people so nice! Today we were in Fremantle meeting Philip and Rachel at their place for lunch, having only met them for the first time a couple of days ago. This had come about from an address given to us, before we left, by an aunt who said she knew the family from many years ago. Quite how was never lucidly explained, Aunties butterfly explanations went off at tangents and frankly became too difficult to follow, so we just agreed that we would look up the people at the address given; which we did, and had been warmly greeted with the words “Oh yes, hello Rodney and Diane, we were just reading the letter from Marjorie (Aunty) who said you would be coming and were composing a reply” Much conversation on who knew whom from way back was concluded when agreed it must have been respective grandfathers whose paths had crossed when both were in Australia for a spell in the sixties. Difficult to verify as grandfathers now deceased. No matter, we enjoyed the Tuesday afternoon’s spontaneous ‘getting to know you’ and were invited to lunch on Thursday to continue the family connections.
“Never mind Rodney, I’m sure you could float” as she glanced at my plump (cuddly I prefer) waistline. Well dear reader, that unintended jibe sank home, and when my wife a few days later said she would only photograph me straight on because side views were not edifying I decided I needed to do something about this lapsed Adonis situation. On returning home and journeying to the local supermarket a leaflet was spotted on a very bright yellow Smart car parked in the main Ferndown car park loudly displaying the benefits of joining a gym. The leaflet had words like; friendly, no lycra, no mirrors, no screens. They sprung from the page which together with the way the gym was shown meant it had to be worth a visit. Visit I did and all was I had hoped. I am now hooked on going every day, weekends included, with the intention of losing more than two stone over the next eighteen months. The gym is a fun place to be I find, much banter, much laughter, much exertion, much breathlessness but so much fun. I therefore thank you Rachel down there in sunny Fremantle for good naturedly, if unintentionally, pointing out that this body of three score years and ten need not be rotund and fit to float. And so it was, that following the lunch, we all wandered into the garden, the conversation touched on recent shark attacks and a need to be watchful when swimming in the warm waters of Oz. I replied that it would not be a problem as I couldn’t swim and stayed out of the sea at depth, direct contact with water deeper than my ankles was a No No. “Dangerous stuff water” I said “I’m strictly a green grass man. Plant Nursery in West Parley The large field at Parley Cross was once one of the many plant nurseries in the area that were run by Stewarts, a Scottish based firm that started as a business growing forestry trees as far back as 1742. To take advantage of the milder climate in the south, a descendent of the founder opened the first of its Dorset nurseries in Ferndown in 1859. The two arms of the business thrived and traded widely throughout Britain, the Continent and the USA. In the early 20th century the firm was the largest producer of nursery stock in the country overcoming occasional difficult trading conditions. The number of nurseries increased. The large Parley site was an important part of the business. Other local centres around here were at Longham (now the site of Haskins), Uddens and West Moors. There were 2 nurseries in Bournemouth and others in Somerset and Sussex. A wide variety of nursery stock was grown. A 1928 map shows a network

of east / west paths across the site that extended from Christchurch Road in the north down the east side of New Road to the bend in the road. The whole site was in completely open countryside with no houses or shops on any of the adjoining main roads apart from a single house where Parley Close now joins the main road. In WW2 the land was worked by many German and Italian prisoners of war due to the labour shortage and the land was turned over to essential food production. Despite mechanisation, the nursery would have been a good employer at other times and make an essential contribution to the local economy. After such intensive cultivation the land is now less used, being grass meadow cut each Autumn. A number of deer are often seen in the field enjoying the safety of the large open area. The land has now been allocated for housing development as part of local housing strategy with over 300 houses and a link road planned to take traffic away from Parley Cross. The Company still runs large garden centres at Christchurch and Broomhill and there are over 500 commercial premises in the south of England that use the Companies services. John Cullen

On Your Plot Courgettes
There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with!

• Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green. • If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up. • With snow in April you’ll probably need to catch up with sowing crops that it was too cold for last month. • As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags. • Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later.
If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same. There’s a good plant stand at the monthly farmers market, and several garden centres or local growers nearby. May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow
pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted too turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag. With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size. If you planted beetroot seeds out in March or April the chances are that they’ll have suffered with the very cold weather that we had last month. Another row sown now may well give you much better results. Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

New attractions at award-winning country park East Dorset’s award-winning country park is introducing some unusual new attractions this spring. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is already home to a miniature steam railway, Go Ape, tree top trail, golf and miles of trails and cycle routes. Now the Park is adding archery and hawk walks to its busy event programme. LEWIS 6WXGHQW /RDQV There’s been a furore in Parliament about the scrapping of student grants. And every time politicians get lairy over such issues, the news focuses on the scrap and the real truth of what’s actually happening gets lost. I’ve been swamped with panicked questions about student grants from students, future students, graduates and their parents, so I want to mythbust what’s really happening. In many ways people are panicking unnecessarily about the grant changes, but missing the really damaging change, which is a retrospective hike in student loans. Student finance: the basics When you go to university, if you’re a first time UK undergraduate you don’t need to pay upfront. The Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees for you and gives you money for living, then you owe it. • You only start repaying when you leave university and, even then, only if you earn over £21,000. If you don’t earn over that you don’t repay. • The amount you repay is proportionate to earnings. You repay 9% of everything above £21,000 (eg, earn £31,000 and, as it’s £10,000 above the threshold, you repay £900 a year). • If you haven’t cleared what you owe within 30 years, the debt is wiped. • If you never earn over £21,000, you never repay. In many ways, financially it’s a no win no fee education. An easy way to think of it is a bit like an extra income tax, with the one difference that once you have repaid what you borrowed (plus interest) it stops. For far more help on this, see my full 20 student loan mythbusters guide at www.mse.me/ studentloan. I’m going to use examples for English students studying in England. For students from Wales, whether you go to university in Wales or elsewhere in the UK, the amount you borrow tends to be less, but the way you repay is the same. I’m going to focus on the situation for students who started in or after 2012 in England, for elsewhere in the UK the loans tend to be smaller. Q. So what’s happening to student grants? A: Until now, students from lower income families (roughly below £43,000 income) had some of their loan replaced by a non-repayable grant for up to £3,400. From September 2016 grants are being scrapped in England and Wales. Yet there’s much confusion about this. There are two big things to note: 1. This only applies for new starters starting from 2016. Those already at university and getting grants will keep getting them. 2. This doesn’t mean they’ll have less money coming in. New 2016 starters will get a bigger loan to replace what they would’ve got in grants. In fact, the loan figures for new starters (not continuing students) have been upped by a chunk. This is useful, as often the big issue that hits students isn’t the size of the loan, it’s that they don’t have enough money to live on day-to-day. Rents alone eat up much of this. Q. Isn’t this likely to really hit poor students hard? A: You may be surprised that I’m going to say no.
In many ways the big problem is the confusion and psychological deterrent, not the practical finances. For most students it makes no practical difference. The replacement of a grant with a loan will ONLY cost more for those who leave university and have long-term very high earnings. That’s because if you compare the current and new system, the fact it’s a loan and not a grant would only cost you more if you would’ve repaid your entire tuition fees, remaining maintenance loan after the grant, and interest in the 30 years before the debt wipes anyway. Most students won’t, so there’s no cost to them. In fact, my calculations estimate only those on STARTING salaries of £35,000 and up, and then above inflation pay rises would actually pay more. So if the system remains as it is now, it’s only those from poor backgrounds who go on to be big earners who this is negative for. However, the big question is ‘will the system remain unchanged?’ Q. What’s this retrospective hike to student repayments? A: As I explained earlier, since 2012, graduates only repay 9% of what they earn over £21,000. The government had said this threshold was due to rise each year from April 2017 in line with average earnings. Yet the Government has now decided to freeze it for at least five years, meaning many low- and middle-earning graduates will pay thousands more back than they thought they would when they signed up. After all, if we go back to thinking of it like a tax, if you were to pay 9% of everything earned above £22,000, but now repay everything above £21,000, that’s a hike. It’s received little publicity though, as it doesn’t immediately seem such a big problem. Here I need to declare an interest: I was head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information in 2012 when the system changed. The Government repeatedly told me the threshold would rise, and I, of course, told people, and used it in all my cost calculations. Well I refuse to missell these loans in hindsight. So I am actively campaigning on it – I’ve written an open letter to the Prime Minister and have personally hired lawyers to see if it can be challenged (read it at www.mse.me/ studentloanhike). The big problem, even more important than the additional cost, is the message this sends. The Government is not just freezing it going forward, it’s freezing it for everyone who signed up since 2012 - effectively changing the contract after people have signed up. The regulator would not allow any commercial lender to change its terms this way. This could destroy any trust current and future generations can have in the student finance system, and perhaps, even more widely, in the political system as a whole. I said above that the impact of replacing grants with loans isn’t actually as bad as many think under the current terms. Yet the real concern is, as the Government has shown it’s willing to change loan terms even after you’ve got them, who knows what may happen in the future.

The Bells Ring Out Again For this month’s article we return again to the Wimborne Minster Parish Magazine, this time the editions from June and July 1911. The Minster’s bells had been silenced for four months in the first half of that year. The eight existing bells had been lowered and removed, recast and retuned, before being rehung. They were joined by two new bells, donated by Mr H.O. Chislett. The great tenor bell (also called St Cuthberga’s Bell) was first cast in around 1385, paid for by William Lorringe who was a Canon of the Minster. It was first hung in the central tower as the western tower would not be built for another 80 years. There were five bells until 1686. The third bell bears the inscription ‘I am the least bell here but to each little one its own charm.’ The peal was increased to eight in 1856 during restoration work. Fundraising for the work in 1911 included a series of concerts on behalf of the Minster Bells Fund, which raised £16. One of the concerts featured the violinist, Harriet Solly. The Bishop of Columbia dedicated the bells at a service on Wednesday 14 June and afterwards the subscribers to the fund were treated to tea in the Vicarage grounds. Little more than a week later, on the afternoon of Coronation Day (Thursday 22 June), a group of expert bellringers from various parts of the country, took up their stations in the bell tower. Over 3 hours and 37 minutes they rang a peal of Stedman Caters, which involved 5,079 changes.
