Dear Neighbours, Did you have a good Easter break? With two bank holiday Mondays this Edition 98 month as well, we really are being spoiled. We had a very busy April going over to The Isle of Wight for a family celebration of my Mum and Dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. The weather was wonderful and with 180 degree sea views from Debbie & Stephen Corney the house on the cliff top, it with our son, Hayden was really rather special. I have to say I do like the Isle of Wight. We were there for a holiday last summer and we couldn’t wait to go back. Straight after coming back, and an overnight unpack and repack, we went off to The New Forest for a long weekend camping in Nellie! We joined the Caravan Club as Stephen’s parents are already members and we met them at the Centenary Site which is a lovely park with good facilities. Stephen’s sister has a new, retro, bright yellow VW Campervan - Jessie Phyllis named after her two grandmothers. She shines! We were not quite so lucky with the weather but sitting in the van playing games and then watching a movie on the computer, all cuddled up together, made the weekend very special and a great end to a fantastic ten days. All in all it has taken some effort getting back to work, but we are glad to say that The Ferndown & West Parley Directory is full of local information for you as well as trades people who would love to hear from you. Recruitment campaign underway to... support front line services A key aspect of ensuring we provide high quality care for all of our patients is our staff – having the right staff in the right place delivering the right care at the right time Last year at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals we invested over £1m in nursing but recruitment doesn’t stop there. We are currently recruiting a range of additional consultant, nursing staff and other clinical roles to support our front line services.
New consultant positions
We currently employ 161 consultants and on completion of the recruitment programme towards the end of the autumn, an additional 22 consultants will be providing care for our patients. The additional posts will support increased seven day working and consultantled care across all specialities, including the Emergency Department. Mr Basil Fozard, the hospitals’ Medical Director said: “Our consultants and their teams play a central role in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients every single day. This avoids delay in patient care and ensures the smooth flow of patients throughout the hospital. “We know that having the right medical experts on hand, whatever day of the week, will ultimately help improve care further.”
Qualified nurse recruitment campaign
We continue to recruit additional experienced nurses through a number of routes and due to the national shortage of experienced band 5 nurses, this includes overseas recruitment. By the end of June we aim to have recruited a total of 97 qualified nurses from the UK and Europe: Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “An important part in providing excellent care is ensuring we have the right staff delivering the right care at the right time for every patient.
She added: “We know from the national staff survey that our staff believe our organisation is a good place to work. We are really proud to serve the local community and want every patient to leave hospital feeling they have received excellent care from warm, friendly, expert staff who treated them with respect and dignity.
“An important part in providing excellent care is ensuring we have the right staff delivering the right care at the right time for every patient.” Our new European nurses are fully qualified in their own country and we have a tailored induction programme which includes assessment of skills and practice under supervision, as well as further workshops in the classroom to embed learning. There are a number of other staffing investments that are being made including: r support and recruitment for additional clinical services such as assistant health practitioners, therapists and additional security porters r new and adaptive roles, such as nurse practitioners to support the wider team r additional supervisory time for ward sisters to support ward staff r smarter use of technology, such as iPads for vital sign monitoring, and e-forms to reduce duplicate paperwork r extended and seven day working for services such as radiology and speech and language therapy.

Dorset Youth Marching Band Dorset Youth Marching Band was founded in 1996, the name of the Quarterjacks was given to the band as we’d developed close ties with Wimborne Minster. The Band meets every Wednesday evening at QE School and is open to ALL youth in Wimborne and the surrounding areas. Our Bandmaster Simon Wheeler has ancestors that founded the First Wimborne Town Band and we are very proud that this tradition continues to provide entertainment and music for the people of Wimborne to this day. On the 19th May 2009 DYMB were officially awarded the title of Wimborne Town Band by Cllr Robin Cook. The Band are and always have been very proud to be a part of Wimborne and becoming the official Town Band was a proud day for us! Youth in Music was created to give all youth in the local area an opportunity to come together and perform on Willow Walk. Youth in Music 2013 was set to be a brilliant one and it didn’t disappoint! DYMB, Gugge 2000, Wessex Majorettes, Quarterjacks Choir and Duet plus One showed what the youth of Dorset can do on a sunny day! Youth in Music 2014 is set to be another great event so place the 28th June in your diary.

WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL Bournemouth 7s Festival **Please note that there are important contact numbers in case of any difficulties trespassers or with the Rugby 7s event.
Second ‘Big Lunch’ planned for West Parley Preparations have started to make the Annual Big Lunch even better than last year. Some 500 people attended in 2013 and Organisers hope to improve on this by offering more attractions. The Big Lunch is a national event aimed at getting neighbours to meet up to get to know new people, try new things and have a party. It will be held at Parley Country Club and Sports fields off Christchurch Road from 12 noon until 5pm on Sunday 1st June. There will be a dog agility show, children’s games and live music. The Club is next to the popular local play area and there is plenty of parking on the Recreation Ground. You can bring along your own lunch or buy something at the food stalls. There will be a ‘Best Table’ competition for anyone with a themed table or picnic and a ‘Parley Prince and Princess’ competition for the under 10s. A raffle will be held to support Wave 105’s ‘Cash for Kids’ campaign for disadvantaged children and Wave 105 will be advertising the West Parley Big Lunch in the run-up to the day.

This year’s festival runs from midday on Friday 23rd May to midday on Monday 26th at Bournemouth Sports Club, Chapel Gate. Rugby, netball and dodgeball competitions are held with music events following in the evening. It is one of the largest social gatherings in the area and is enjoyed by thousands of people. Being close to West Parley, residents hear the noise of the event if the wind is from the east and are affected by the large number of people driving or walking to and from the festival. The Organisers, Diamond Sporting Group, are keen to reduce the impact on the local community and are implementing measures to achieve this. There will be an increased Police presence from Parley Cross to Chapel Gate and security patrols round the village. These patrols will be looking to minimise any disruptive behaviour and will clear up any litter when they see it. The live music at the festival will end at 11pm with recorded music continuing till 1am. If any residents experience problems around the site or in the village they can contact: ** the event control room on 01202 237015 with details or text details on 07531 754767 or phone Gary Smith, the Environmental Health Officer for Christchurch on 07824 473812 who will be on site monitoring the event and will deal with any specific noise issues. Organisers hope that by working with the local community the event should run smoothly and have the minimum effect on local people. Core Strategy
The Planning Inspector has accepted the District Council’s plans for massive housing developments in West Parley that would increase the size of the village by a third.
15 The Parish Council will continue to support residents’ views expressed in the current Parish Plan that large developments are not suitable for the village as the roads are already under pressure and other aspects of the infrastructure are not suitable. We will keep a very close eye on how (or if) the building plans develop and keep you up to date if anything happens.
Support for community groups
WPPC is keen to enable new community groups to form and to encourage existing groups to seek ways to involve more village residents in the local social scene. Groups or individuals can apply to the Parish Council for grant funding. The application form is on the web site or can be obtained from the Parish Clerk, Linda Leeding, on 07979 853697. Anyone planning to set up a new group or activity may not be sure of local reaction to this, so the Parish Council will pay for the hire of local public space for the first three meetings of new groups. This offer is for West Parley residents only and not for commercial organisations or political groups. There are many groups operating in the village and residents are encouraged to get involved in local organisations and meet each other. And why not join the ‘Volunteers’ who help to keep the village tidy, clear litter, distribute leaflets, help at coffee mornings and lunch clubs and help local car transport schemes. Details of current groups are on the Parish Council web site.
Planters round the village
The new large blue planters will soon be put in place in prominent spots as part of our plans to improve the look of the village. If anyone who lives near one of these would be willing to keep an eye on it, please let Cllr Pat Couper know.

Volunteer Drivers Scheme
Since the scheme started in September 2013 it has proved a great success, with fifteen regular drivers who have already completed 280 trips. Those who use the service say how much they appreciate it. John Thornton Music Awards The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation was honoured to be invited to present awards at the end of season concert for the Dorset Music Service County Ensembles. Over 100 talented young musicians took part in the concert, performing to an audience of over 300 people. Tickets sales raised more than £1300 and the JTYAF was delighted to have been chosen as the recipient charity for this prestigious event. The concert was held at Bryanston School and not only marked the end of season, but was also the result of a residential weekend of activities and rehearsals. This celebration of musical talent was inspirational. The young musicians performed to an extremely high level and their enjoyment and enthusiasm was evident. Their achievement, an electrifying performance, was testament to their own commitment and dedication and also to the hard work of their talented musical professionals. The audience showed their appreciation with sustained applause and with a variety of genres, from Vivaldi to Coldplay, every musical interest was catered for. The JTYAF was delighted to present the John Thornton Music Awards to nine talented musicians who were selected because of the remarkable progress that they had made during the season and for their outstanding commitment to the Dorset Youth Orchestras. The bursaries attached to these awards will provide them with the opportunity to further their musical development. But, as mentioned at the start, always remember the golden rule is “let the buyer beware” so (provided you have not been misled) you will be liable for any problems that you discover after exchange of contracts.

Iron Age wine in West Parley? The large Iron Age hill fort at Dudsbury, West Parley, is part of a chain of fortified earthworks on the River Stour starting at Double Dykes on Hengistbury Head, through to Hambledon Hill and including the large forts at Hod Hill and Badbury Rings. These were built by the local tribe, the Durotriges, one of a number of Celtic tribes in England, who were settled in Dorset, south Wiltshire, south Somerset and east Devon. The Durotriges represented a settled society based on the farming of lands protected by these hill forts. Whilst we may think of these ancient tribes as selfcontained, in fact they would trade goods over considerable distances. Almost 3000 years ago Hengistbury Head was arguably the premier port for the importation of continental goods and is thought to be one of the first truly urban settlements in England. There is extensive evidence of working of lead, gold, silver and bronze for jewellery and coins but also evidence of trading in a range of goods including goods from what is now northern France. Large quantities of wine were brought direct from Italy and figs,

These goods were destined for central Wessex and would have been transported up the Stour and Avon valleys by both river and land and exchanged for metals, hides, corn, cattle and possibly slaves. The cross channel exchange of bronze tools and weapons was widespread. There is evidence of considerable settlement and mixed farming on the good soils of the Stour valley and much of this trade would have passed and been for the Iron Age settlement in West Parley. The Stour would have been navigable at these times to shallow boats by punting or goods would be moved by cart on tracks on dry land away from the river. As the Stour meanders a number of times in Dorset the tracks follow a more direct route and many of our modern main roads follow these straight ancient tracks. Looking at a local map you can see how the roads north west out of Christchurch through Hurn, West Parley, Wimborne and Blandford and further follow the route connecting the ancient hill forts. Fantastic forest fly in There’s a clutch of new arrivals at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood, this spring with birds flocking for attention across the Park. Thirteen ducklings were sighted on Moors Lake as the first raft took to the water – the highest single hatching figure recorded at Moors Valley. Chiffchaffs (Phylloscopus collybita) are being sighted regularly snapping up insects as they fly past and, with the swallows due to arrive any day the nest cameras are already relaying images of nuthatches (Sita europaea) bringing in bark peeled from the abundant pine trees to line their nest. “It’s wonderful to hear the dawn chorus as the Park wakes up each spring morning,” said Pam, a longtime bird enthusiast and Moors Valley Information Offi cer. “We are already keeping a watchful eye on many young families and I’m particularly delighted to announce the arrival of a nest of House sparrows near the railway platform at Kingsmere Station.” Once common in most gardens the House sparrow (Passer domesticus) is now Red Listed by the RSPB following a drop in recorded numbers of 71%. It is thought that part of this severe decline has been caused by a lack of insects resulting in poorly fed chicks. “At Moors Valley there are plenty of suitable nest sites for sparrows and natural food sources, and we also provide a feeding station at the back of the Visitor Centre,” added Pam. “It’s a great place to sit quietly and see how
many species you can spot.” With over 800 acres to explore and relax in the natural attractions of Moors Valley Country Park and Forest are not restricted to the spring. Wildlife enthusiasts will find the Park is one of the best places in the country to spot summer dragonflies, autumn sees the arrival of the swanringer to ring the new cygnets, while overwintering arrivals at the lake include two Amber Listed dabbling ducks, Gadwall and Teal. Moors Valley opens daily and whilst admission is free there is a charge for parking. Regular visitors can benefit from a choice of season tickets providing parking at significantly reduced rates. The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion. The flesh and blood big cat has a compact body, a broad head and powerful jaws – and this describes perfectly the attributes of the new F-TYPE from Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. Indeed, in the automotive world, the latest Jaguar is leading the pack. The two-seater convertible embodies a return to the company’s heartland, focusing on athleticism, dexterity and behind-the-wheel involvement. What's more the FTYPE is a continuance of a sporting lineage stretching back over 75 years. The engineering philosophy fortifying the F-TYPE is focused on Jaguar’s expertise when it comes to aluminium. The metal is lightweight, so its use in the car’s architecture helps provide a perfectly balanced weight distribution. That permits the Jag’s rear-wheel drive dynamics to be exploited to the max. Three types of the Jaguar model are available: the FTYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine, with all of them featuring stop/start technology to increase efficiency. My press car was the F-TYPE S, powered by a new 3.0litre V6 lump. Producing 375bhp and 338lb/ft of torque (pulling power), the car has more than enough horses and grunt to get you moving rapidly. The free-revving, willing nature of the engine encourages you to be, shall we say, enthusiastic – and I certainly tried to sample the full extent of the car’s abilities. The 0-62mph sprint comes in just 4.9 seconds and the top speed is 171mph. The feeling you get when you accelerate is similar to that of an aeroplane hurtling down the runway before take-off. You’re literally pressed into your seatback, and the smile it induces could only ever be outdone by a small child on Christmas morning. And just when you think the Jaguar F-TYPE couldn’t possibly release any more endorphins into your bloodstream – you come across the sports car’s active
exhaust system. With just a touch of a button you can change an already throaty sounding exhaust note into one that builds to a thrilling crescendo at the red line. Driving the F-TYPE isn’t rocket science though. It has a set of eight closely-spaced gear ratios in its Quickshift auto transmission, giving you superior control. The V6powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest. Taking cues from cockpits of fighter aeroplanes, the switches are grouped by function. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the gearbox. Additionally, the air vents on top of the dashboard will only deploy when you instruct them to, or by complex control algorithms, staying tucked discreetly out of sight in other circumstances. The concentration on driver passion and performance in the F-TYPE is highlighted by the ‘one plus one’ layout of the asymmetric cabin. This is confirmed by the grab handle which races down the centre console on the passenger side, delineating it from the driver’s side. The F-TYPE is, without doubt, a car that delivers precisely the key sporting characteristics that Jaguar intended. It’s definitely a big toy for big boys and girls – and it’s available from only £58,500 for the entry level, rising to £67,520 for the F-TYPE S, on to a price-tag of £79,950 for the F-TYPE V8 S.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow! Nellie has been a very busy ‘girl’ this month. She took us to Moors Valley where she met not only the train but also the tractor…. story below. Then she took us to The Isle of Wight for a 50th Wedding Annivesary celebration with my parents and then… a weekend trip to the New Forest with Stephen’s parents and his sister in her gorgeous yellow VW Campervan! Nellie is currently resting in the garden… It is a lot of work you know for an ‘old girl’ who is a little overweight. Moors Valley is a favourite for many. It is a fantastic place for youngsters, parents and grandparents alike. Saturday the 5th April was a special day and Hayden, our son was invited to be a park keeper for the day. Just like Percy! There is a brand new trail for all the family which is an ideal way to get the children out to experience our wonderful countryside. As the Moors Valley website says, “Enjoy… Experience… Explore… At Moors Valley there is something for everyone… whether you want to enjoy a peaceful walk or cycle ride through the Forest, experience a ride on an authentic

Wonderful paintings. After a smooth start, this is where the fun started for us. Nellie had been invited to meet the steam train, so off we went down to the wonderful station, so well set out. Stephen drove Nellie across the railway line so we could take a photo of the train and her together. At the other side was a lovely, if rather wet looking field. Have you guessed…. YES, Nellie got stuck in the mud! Her high wheels spun very ineffectively and she sat there looking rather frustrated. Much to her delight, and that of Hayden who was now worried as he had a swimming competition to attend later in the day and feared he would never make it, the tractor was a great success and Nellie came out totally unscathed, if a little flushed… and muddy. It was all rather exciting really.
39 The trains at Moors Valley are a treat. We were very honoured, not only to meet Jim Haylock the owner and creator of the Moors Valley Railway, but also have a personal tour by him. Originally Jim was a carpet fitter but had always had a dream to create a ‘full railway experience’. This is exactly what you get when you hop aboard. There is a ticket collector, a conductor, bridges, overhead signs, a signal box, level crossings, in fact everything you see on a full working railway. There are even sheds where the trains are made, renovated and otherwise kept in tip top condition. Jim and his nephew Tim, who is now working very closely with his uncle, both have a total passion for trains and you can see the sheer delight and enjoyment in what they do. Tim drove his first train at a very early age and I think from the look in his eyes he was smitten immediately. What young boy wouldn’t be! Hayden, our son was so excited when he was able to blow the whistle to start the train! His chest stuck out like a proud robin as he blew. A very happy boy. We didn’t have enough time to do the Percy trail unfortunately, but will be back, as Moors Valley is a favourite of ours. Hayden is also extremely keen to try his

Hayden can’t wait to Go Ape! skills at Go Ape, so I guess now that he is tall enough, we will be doing this soon too. Wish me luck! We are so fortunate to have such a gorgeous park which is ever developing and expanding. Local school children visit East Dorset Council Children from four local schools have visited East Dorset District Council to learn more about the responsibilities and work of the council. School council representatives from Hillside Community first school and Emmanuel middle school in Verwood, Oakhurst Community first school in West Moors and Lockyer’s middle school in Corfe Mullen all took part in a morning of learning and activities in the East Dorset council chamber. The chairman of East Dorset Council, Cllr Malcolm Birr, welcomed the children before Cllr Sarah Burns gave an outline of the council’s responsibilities. Pupils also learned about the council’s community development and community safety work, took part in a good citizenship quiz and got a taste of the voting experience by nominating their favourite part of the morning. Following the session, Cllr Birr said: “I am delighted
that these young people were able to come and learn more about the work of the council. The group showed great enthusiasm and asked lots of questions. “I hope they all enjoyed the day and that learning more about the responsibilities of the council and the work of its councillors and officers will help them with the good work they are all doing for their school councils.”

The Inner Wheel Club of Ferndown Our dinner meeting in April proved to be a lively affair since we were delighted to entertain our husbands and other guests at this event. Over 50 people sat down to an excellent dinner of pork escalope followed by treacle sponge pudding! After this satisfying meal we were all in the mood to be entertained, and were not disappointed. The speaker was Howard Nichols and his PowerPoint presentation was called “A Lifeboat on the Road”. Having been a practising paramedic within the NHS for many years and followed on with becoming a service instructor, he was approached by the RNLI with a unique opportunity to use these skills by updating the medical procedures of lifeboat crews. This was in the 1980s and he was needed to work with the crews instructing them how to deal with injured people when called out on a “Shout”. The training was to be on the lifeboat station sites themselves, so a mobile training vehicle was being constructed. There had to be different courses for boats from infl atable inshore craft to the much more powerful all weather launches. so Howard was sent out to experience the conditions the crews had to deal with on the sea in each class of boat.
He spent months acquiring his “sea legs” before he was ready to begin the training, while the “Lifeboat on Wheels was designed. This was an extremely large trailer with the interior laid out as a medical training section and there was also a mock-up lifeboat section. After all the planning and preparation, at the end of the 1989 Howard eventually was sent out to visit all the lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland. He told of his adventures during his tours and the people he had met during the years with his trailer, until his retirement. He had had a unique pre retirement job and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Everyone also enjoyed this talk and Jean Hunter gave the vote of thanks, expressing our appreciation. The same week our fund raising event “Ladies Pamper Night” was held in the Ferndown Guide Hall. This was an opportunity for ladies to view products and services sold by local business women. There were stalls with jewellery, handbags, scarves, greetings cards, plus a hairdresser, nail technician, colour specialist and other beauty products. The visitors attending were treated to a glass of Bucks Fizz and offered nibbles. After spending time in the main hall, they were told coffee and homemade cake would be served in the smaller hall, which proved to be very popular. A splendid raffle also brought in additional revenue for the event.Proceeds from this Pamper night will be donated to the Heart Club and other local charities supported by Inner Wheel. Ferndown Tennis Club celebrates 50th Anniversary Christchurch MP Chris Chope and his wife Christo, Ferndown’s Mayor Pauline Reynolds, Town Clerk Vanessa Ricketts, and Dorset LTA Councillor Richard Henshaw, were among those celebrating with past and present members Fifty years of Ferndown Tennis Club on Saturday 5th April. The Club has played during this time at the King George V Playing Field Courts Ferndown, which is also the location of the Town Council Offices, and to mark the occasion ex-members and invited guests gathered for this special event. Three of the original founder members of the Club were present to cut the celebration cake, Dot and Len Hawker and Betty Bunce who was the Club’s secretary for an astounding 33 years. Her successor Viv Scott has been the current secretary for a mere 17 years! Following a short speech by Chairman Lynn Chong, drinks and an excellent buffet were enjoyed by everyone.

Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first. For instance, the cabbage-white butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of garlic in warm water, leave for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective. If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with oldfashioned moth balls although the effects don’t
last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers. For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends. Happy hunting!

Jane Stichbury ‘pricked’ as The High Sheriff for Dorset 2014/15 Mrs Jane Stichbury of Ashley Heath made her declaration of office as The High Sheriff for Dorset for 2014/15 at a special ceremony at Bryanston School in Blandford on Thursday April 4. The historical service, known as The High Sheriff’s Declaration announces the nominated High Sheriff of Dorset for the ‘shreival year’ of 2014/15. The High Sheriff supports the judiciary and the Crown and actively lends support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector. During the ceremony, the former High Sheriff, Mrs Catriona Payne, presented the Key of the Poole Town Goal to Mrs Jane Stichbury. A sword was also presented to Mrs Stichbury by former High Sheriff Mr Jeremy Pope.
The Office of High Sheriff is an independent, nonpolitical royal appointment for a single year. The origins of the office date back to Saxon times, when the ‘Shire Reeve’ was responsible to the king for the maintenance of law and order within the county, and for the collection and return of taxes owed to the Crown. Today, there are 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales each year. The High Sheriff is selected or ‘pricked’ from the List of Sheriffs for England and Wales and is carried out on a voluntary basis with no part of the expense falling on the public purse. Mrs Katharine Jones, partner at Humphries Kirk LLP, is the current Under Sheriff and the High Sheriff can be contacted through her office at 40 High West Street, Dorchester.

This is a golden time for those in debt. While that may seem a strange thing to say, the best EVER deals for cutting loan, store or credit card costs are now on the market. So if you've existing debts, a little bit of action could save you £100s or £1,000s. The aim is to cut the interest rate you pay, so more of your repayments clear the debt rather than servicing the interest, so you're debt-free far quicker. 1. Stop borrowing. Borrowing more just makes the problem costlier and longer-lived. You can’t borrow your way out of debt. The tips below are about getting new products, not borrowing more. 2. CREDIT & STORE CARD DEBT: Shift to 31mths 0%. If you've debts on cards, do a balance transfer. This is where you ask a new card to pay off debts on other cards, so you owe it instead, hopefully at a cheaper rate. To get a card, you must pass a credit score. Usually the only way to find out is to apply, which marks your file. To get round that, find which card’s most likely to accept you with my free Eligibility Checker at www.mse.me/ eligibility Follow the balance transfer golden rules: a) Always repay at least the set monthly minimum, or you lose special rates. b) Always plan to shift the debt again or fully repay before the 0% ends, or these cards' rates jump to 18.9% and 17.9% representative APR. c) Don't spend on these cards – it's usually not at the same cheap rate. 3. LOAN DEBT: Can you cut the cost? This is more difficult, as most old loans charge up to two months' interest to repay early, which needs factoring in. It's worth trying if you can get a much lower APR loan (ie, more than a fifth off) and have a while left to repay – especially if your credit score's improved since getting the loan.

Both First Direct and Nationwide offer this if you switch to them, but the amounts offered are usually limited. 5. Don't repay all debts equally – attack the highest APR first. The exception to the ‘highest APR first’ rule is loans with penalties for overpaying early. 6. Set up a direct debit to protect your credit score. Forget or make late repayments and you risk losing 0% deals, being fined and suffering a hit on your credit score. So set up a direct debit to cover at least the monthly minimum, then manually pay more on top each month. 7. Got both debts and savings? Stop. £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs £180 a year, while the same amount saved in top paying savings earns just £15 before tax. If you’re thinking “yes, but I like some spare cash”, this is often false security. More at www.mse.me/ClearDebtsWithSavings 8. Free debt crisis help. While my tips above should help cut the cost of debt, for some people that isn’t enough. If you're struggling to meet your minimum repayments and basic bills, have non-mortgage debts bigger than a year's salary, or can’t sleep for worry, you're likely to be in debt crisis.
If so, ignore the options above and contact a non-profit debt advice service that uses a different set of solutions, such as StepChange (stepchange.org), Citizens Advice 4. Tastes so good... BUTTERED BRIOCHE PUDDING
If you’re looking for a little bit of food indulgence it doesn’t get much better than this pudding. Super easy to prepare, this dish works beautifully well either on its own, or with a dollop of custard or ice-cream.
Ingredients:
Equipment: Well greased, deep baking dish
1 brioche, sliced and buttered 60g sultanas 2 level tablespoons castor sugar 1 1/4 pint whole milk 4 medium sized eggs Sprinkling of nutmeg
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 3-4.
Serve with cream, custard or icecream.
Place the milk in a pan and gently heat.
Slice and butter the brioche. Put a layer on the bottom of the dish and sprinkle the sultanas over them. Arrange a second layer of brioche over the top.
Whisk the eggs and sugar together and add the warm milk to make a creamy custard. Strain the custard over the brioche and sprinkle the nutmeg over. Stand for 15 minutes before placing in the oven. Cook for 30-40 minutes until set and lightly golden.
