away with the Cubs and Scouts camping. Having recently bought a converted van, this was an ideal opportunity. The van is used to transport all the magazines each month, but at the weekend the little fridge and cooker come into their own. I have to say I love it! Waking up in the middle of a field, not literally of course, and seeing the sun rising was really quite liberating! Hayden went climbing, abseiling, jumping up and down on trampolines, making fires and cooking apples, shooting at targets and generally having a whale of a time. I was never a girl guide myself and I have to say I think I missed out! If you have any Girl Guide or Scouting stories and photos, do send them to us and we will print them for you. Better care for patients with dementia “ONE gentleman was very vocal, and we discovered he liked to sing. We bought CDs of his favourite music - Frank Sinatra and swing - and he would sing to his heart’s content. He didn’t have a bad voice either...” The use of music is just one initiative helping older patients to cope with what can be a challenging and confusing experience. Dr Sue Hazel is the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospital’s lead consultant in dementia care, the implementation lead for the National Dementia Strategy within the two hospitals. Sue says this strategy has been the catalyst for a range of change across the two hospitals, as well as at Poole Hospital, and has helped to create a new era of progressive and patientcentred care. “We already work closely with our colleagues at Poole and the merger will give us an even more unified front,” said Sue. “We will have a greater impact in areas like ward environments, staff training and community involvement.” At Poole Hospital, consultant geriatrician Dr Premila Fade highlights the flagship Lulworth ward, where changes to the ward environment have been used to support dementia patients. “We improved the layout, colours and lighting to make the ward more welcoming,” said Premila. “A hospital visit can be very confusing for patients
Dr Sue Hazel working with colleagues with dementia, and anything we can do to make the environment easier helps. “Since Lulworth was refurbished we’ve been able to use the principles on other wards too.” Memory clinics for older and frailer patients, specially trained dementia ‘champions’, volunteer mealtime companions, unique patient ‘life diaries’ to help a patient’s stay that much more individual and comforting - all these initiatives and more form part of the award-winning and innovative work in place at all three hospitals. • Poole’s dementia carers played a key role in developing the hospital-wide Human Touch campaign, with 10 golden rules advising all staff how best to ensure that patients’ privacy and dignity is respected. • As well as the Dementia Care Pathway guidelines, Bournemouth also has its own ‘top tips’ for nurses around carrying out personal care, nutrition and bedtime among others. • Volunteer mealtime companions at both trusts – as well as brightly-coloured cutlery and crockery – help encourage patients to keep up their food intake as well as create a friendly mealtime experience.

One day, one night, one reason...
On 9th April, Ferndown Relay For Life organisers and public supporters gathered in the rain for a photo launch to help promote the 2013 Relay. With a successful turnout, supporters included a variety of teams dedicated to making the fundraising event a success, as well as one of the star survivors, five year old Charlotte Jackson (pictured centrally next to bear mascot Buttons). When asked why people should take part in Relay for Life Charlotte said: ‘people should do it to raise money (for CRUK) which will help me and other people with cancer & leukaemia.’ Another aspiring person taking part in this years Cancer research Relay for Life is Chris Symonds, who is going to be doing the relay by himself rather than with the help of a team. The 24 hour event held at Ferndown Leisure centre and commencing Saturday 29th June at 12 noon, consists of teams with members of all ages and fitness levels. During the Relay participants take it in turns to walk around the track whilst listening to live music and joining in a wide range of family friendly activities including Zorbing. Competitions between teams allows for a little friendly rivalry in attempts to win cups and prizes, and even in the pouring rain there’s no stopping the marathon party!
In a bid to raise money for the festival style event, several family friendly fundraisers have been organised over the upcoming weeks. On Saturday 18th May a sponsored Zumbathon will be taking place at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown between 1pm and 3pm, followed by a Ploughman’s supper quiz commencing at 7pm at St Mary’s church. A Raffle will also be taking place with prizes including tickets to see former “I’m a celebrity winner” Joe Pasquale and a family of 4 entry to Farmer Palmers. Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team event. It provides the opportunity for survivors to celebrate, carers to be recognised, for everyone involved to remember those lost and ultimately to celebrate life, in an effort to raise as much money as possible to beat cancer. West Parley Heritage Open Day The recent Heritage Open Day at Parley Sports Club produced a lot of interesting discussion amongst residents who attended. Old maps, photos and books were on display to show residents the long history of the village and to prompt memories. Residents brought in some interesting finds from their gardens that an expert Archaeologist helped to identify and explain what they were. The most important item was a late Neolithic 3 inch worked flint found 2 years ago in Birch Ave. This find was in perfect condition and was just as it had been made 5000 year ago. It was explained how the tool had been formed and that it would have been used as a general scraper and to cut animal skin and meat. Residents offered a huge amount of information about how things were here. Many were born or have lived in West Parley for 60 or more years. These first discussions will be followed up soon so that these memories that can be recorded for the benefit of all of us. A resident brought in details of the 1939 sale of building plots for what was called the Pine Hills Estate, now Chine Walk, Dudsbury Road and part of Glenmoor Road, that was then no more than a dirt track across to Ferndown. Details of some of the more interesting features were highlighted. The location of the small WW2 prisoner of war camp was confirmed as south of Crescent Walk. Some residents remembered it and the Italian prisoners held there and it was shown in a number of 1947 aerial
photos on display. These photos also showed how little of the village had been developed at that time with the outline of the current main and most of our side roads clearly visible but with very little housing around. Further work with County Archaeologists who will help us check out local features on maps and records and agree the age of boundary features such as ditches, banks, stones and posts. Some current boundaries may seem fairly recent but many are likely to go back to very ancient times. As the result of recent publicity about this project in the Directory, a local metal detecting group has come forward to help the research needed to get more information about the older parts of the village. We need to get agreement from landowners for these land searches and fieldwork to go ahead. Many finds have been made during building work but searching around where finds have already been made should show more about our common past John Cullen

Rise and Shine at Ferndown First School The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was delighted to be invited to present awards to ten pupils at Ferndown First School. Ferndown First School chose to use their allocated funding to provide individual awards for nominated pupils from each of their ten classes. Class teachers were asked to recommend, not just a pupil, but also to suggest an activity or event, that the pupil could be taken to, to pursue a particular interest, based on the teacher’s knowledge of the child. An awards ceremony gave the children the chance to share their experiences with the rest of the school and it was clear to see that their teachers knew them well. A pupil who is an avid scientist visited the Leonardo di Vinci museum in London, to promote his interest in this area. A talented dancer was treated to a performance of The Nutcracker by the wonderful Moscow
Ballet. A year’s membership to the Intech Science Centre and the Oryx Club at Marwell Zoo were amongst other awards all intended to give the children a once in a lifetime opportunity to promote their interests further. “Ferndown First School pupils are privileged to have been included in the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation Awards. We are grateful for the opportunity to support our young pupils in fulfilling their early ambitions. They have all thoroughly enjoyed their experiences.” Jo Di-Pede - Headteacher It was an absolute pleasure to see these ten John Thornton Young Achievers shine so brightly, undoubtedly inspired by their awards.
