Hello Ferndown & West Parley! Well we needed some rain but I think we got more than we bargained for! I’d like a little sunshine again now. I think you will agree. Have you ever tried Geocaching? Well I highly recommend it and have written a short article on pages 28 and 29. All good fun! There’s also lots of local information this month, including news from The West Parley Parish Council. There are Jubilee Celebrations at The West Parley Recreation Ground on June 4th and on King George V Playing Fields on June 2nd so don’t miss those! I am looking for local people’s celebrations so that we can wish you Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary or drool over the photo of your new baby. Please see page 20 for the data on this. It will be a new feature in our next issue and could be a great way to wish someone a Happy Day! Also if you have a group or club you would like everyone to know more about please email your data to us. There may be many people who would love to know about you or can give some help. Talking about wildlife with
Red Squirrels Britain's only native, the red squirrel, has seen its population on a steady decline. It is estimated that as few as 140,000 live in Britain as opposed to the 2.5 million greys. These squirrels are typically distinguished by their long, bushy tails, ear tufts and russet red fur. However, the colour of their fur can range from black to red, causing confusion in identification. The colour of an individual may also vary with the time of year, as thicker winter coats appears darker. The fur on a red squirrel’s belly is always white. Reds are smaller and more delicate than their grey brothers. Their bodies measure between 19 and 23cm and their tails are between 15 and 20cm. There is little difference between the sexes, making it difficult to distinguish between males and females. Sciurus (Latin for ‘squirrel’), are nimble creatures and spend the majority of their time in the treetops. They live in a range of habitats, from conifer forests to broadleaf woodlands. Look out for their large nests (dreys), which consist of twigs, moss, grass and soft hair. They may appear in the forks and hollows of trees. The diet of these rodents consists of seeds - they love the seeds in conifer cones - as well as fungi, nuts, shoots and berries. They forage for food throughout the year and will create stores in the gr ou nd du ri n g a u tum n t o pr epar e themselves for winter. The mating season begins in February and March, at which point reds may be spotted chasing one another through the trees. Red squirrels tend to produce their young in the spring. A second litter may follow in the summer. Females usually

have 2-3 kittens, but can have up to 6. These are born after 45-48 days. Their survival in England is threatened primarily by the grey squirrel, which competes for their food and also carries the squirrel pox virus. Greys are largely unaffected by squirrel pox, but it is lethal for reds. In southern England, red squirrels can be found only on the Isle of Wight and on the islands of Poole Harbour, especially Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Brownsea Island nature reserve, on the National Trust owned island, which is now open daily to visitors until November. So why do we need to design our gardens? Don’t they just evolve over a period of time & fit like a comfortable pair of old slippers? However, planning restrictions on areas such as paving the front drives, building garden

summerhouses, pruning or removing trees that have outgrown their size have to be considered. New fencing or hedges may affect our neighbours and our very unreliable climate can make it difficult to select plants that will thrive well in all weathers. So by having a good set of drawings and planting plans you can set about actually revolutionising your garden. You might want to do it yourself in different stages; employ a garden landscaper (in which case a good set of drawings for them to follow will help ensure you get what you want) or I am happy to oversee the whole project for you. Whichever way you look at it a well designed garden with the right layout and proportions of hard landscaping and planting can greatly enhance your property, give you much pleasure and not extra work in maintaining it. It has been enhanced by a smart new wendy house, and for parents there is a nearby gazebo where you can relax in the shade. More improvements, including access to toilets, are in the pipeline.
District Council’s Green Belt Building Plans These plans were exhibited by the District Council’s planners in the Memorial Hall April 24th – it is fair to say that the steady stream of residents passing through were not attracted by what they saw. There is an ongoing Consultation in which residents can state their views, but the form provided is far from

simple. A leaflet will shortly go to all houses in West Parley to help with this. It is most important that all residents respond to the Consultation but there is plenty of time – it is open until 25 June. Wait for the leaflet, which will make it easier. Don’t think the battle to prevent a 32% addition to our housing stock, in the green belt at that, is lost. The process has just begun and our voice is yet to be heard. There are plenty of hurdles ahead for this plan, including an Independent Enquiry and legal processes after that.

Parley Sports Relief Mile The Parley Sports Club played a blinder. More than 1000 people came to the Sainsbury’s Sports Relief Mile on 25 March and most of them ran. The happiest large scale event in West Parley in a long time.
New Councillors The addition of Sheila Gooden and Simon Jordan as Councillors has brought new strengths to the Parish Council. Sheila now leads in the area of attention to older residents and Simon gives us a good relationship with the Sports Club.

A golden way to start a topic Ferndown First School had a special visitor on Tuesday 17th April to help them launch their whole School topic – The Olympics. Sailing Olympic Gold medallist Andy Simpson joined the children for assembly to talk about his achievements and show the children his medal before participating in a family Olympics event hosted by the youngest children in the school. Finding Hidden Treasure in Dorset If you have never heard of “geocaching” before and you like walking, or you have children that you would like to get out of the house and get some fresh air, then this is definitely something you will like. What’s more is it is free! All you need is a GPS device which you can buy from Argos, Amazon or local outdoor equipment stockists for example, or you maybe able to use your phone for which you can get an App. You then go online to www.geocaching.com where it is free to register. There are literally thousands of walks that people have added and they are in practically every area you can think of across the country (and even abroad!). Now, this is not just an ordinary walk… there is treasure to find! Well actually it is a box of trinkets into which people have put all sorts of little things. It could be a large ‘cache’ (meaning hiding place especially of hidden goods, treasure) or a tiny something to find. The idea of the walk is to find the treasure. It is ideal for children who would otherwise severely object to even the thought of walking! Hayden, our son always responds with a

Some spectacular views along the coast big “Yeah!” when I say we are all going out to do a geocache. He doesn’t even look at me if I say I want to go out for a walk! There are two types of geocache… one that just gives you the coordinates to get somewhere and you follow that until you find it. At the end of the ‘hunt’ you are given a clue to find the treasure. The second type is good for younger children as it gives lots of clues and there are lots of questions as you go along. This is called a multi cache. We like those the best. Every ten minutes or so there is a question about where you are. You need to answer the question to get the coordinates to be able to carry on. At the finale you get a clue to find a hidden box or similar object, often containing a little book to write your name in or a comment and then you can exchange a little trinket for something you want to leave behind. All great fun! Free and it gets us out of the house, enjoying the English country side, seaside, forest, in fact anywhere and everywhere. did three geocaches starting at Durlston Country Park. A lovely cup of coffee and a piece of cake overlooking the fantastic British coastline set us off on the right foot. It was absolutely gorgeous, blue sky, blue sea and perfect temperature. I really enjoyed the whole day. What is funny, is seeing adults getting very competitive about finding the ‘cache’ first! There was a buzz of excitement as each of us rummaged through the undergrowth to find the treasure. At the last cache, after walking for over an hour, my sister and I decided to sit and take in the amazing view and let the others ‘fight for their supremacy’. We sat on a very comfortable rock and relaxed. After 10 minutes or so watching our friends busy hunting I was sitting on it all the time! or old, fit or not so fit. You can even create your own for others to follow, once you get the hang of it. Why not do one yourself and send me some photos for us to print in the magazine for you? Dream Team Ambition Ferndown’s Jamie Sorbie is set on playing cricket at international level - for the England team for the deaf/hearing impaired. And Ferndown Rotary has stepped in with a kit donation of £250.00 to help him achieve his dream. (At international level, the team runs a parallel programme of matches to that of the hearing team.) A cricketing all rounder, 18 year old Jamie has played for Parley Cricket Club since he was nine, two years after he developed a severe hearing loss. He is currently a member of the Lions, the group of up and coming young cricketers vying for a place in the elite, England senior squad. Outside cricket, hearing aids coupled with a good command of lip reading mean that Jamie leads a ‘normal’ life. He is about to take his A levels at Ferndown Upper School with a view to studying maths at university.

Lions Derick Smith and Godwin Micallef with a vanload of specs At this spring cleaning time of year, Lions clubs throughout the South are busy collecting unwanted pairs of specs. Using the Lions Clubs international organisation, the collected glasses are refurbished, cleaned and graded and prepared for distribution in third world countries where eye care is often unaffordable and lens making facilities are non -existent. A life-chan ging experience for someone who cannot afford spectacles to see again with specs that would otherwise be thrown away! This year Wimborne and Ferndown Lions have provided the local collection centre. The club themselves collected 3,600 pairs and the total assembled from our region was over 18,000 pairs. Bournemouth, Boscombe, Christchurch, Poole and Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Clubs all contributed. Th e glasses were collected from individuals and from collection bins situated in opticians and doctor's waiting rooms in our area *It has been calculated that the cost of the scheme (paid by the Lions) is around 5p per pair

Explore Moors Valley – for free! Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Puffs 5 Rhubarb sticks, cut into 3cm pieces 1 Tsp ground cinnamon 3 Tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting 5 Tbsp soft brown sugar 1/2 x 500g block puff pastry 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 50g Rolled oats 1. Pre-heat the oven to gas 6/200c/180c. 2. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. 3. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 20x30cm, then cut into quarters and place on the sheet. 4. Rub together the remaining flour and butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs then add the sugar and oats to make a rough crumble mixture. 5. Divide the rhubarb between the pastry quarters, leaving a 1cm rim. 6. Sprinkle the oat mixture over, then fold and pinch each corner to keep the filling in. Bake for 20-25 mins and serve warm.

MURDER MYSTERY PICNIC & WALK IN THE CORFE CASTLE RUINS Gates open 6.30pm for walk at 7.30pm July 16th, 18th, 23rd, 25th August 6th, 8th, 13th 2012 Yes, it’s back! The highly acclaimed Double Act Murder Mystery Walks are back this year. Once again with thanks to the National Trust for access to the Castle itself. The gates will open at 6.30pm for you to bring your own picnic and dine alfresco in the outer bailey before the mystery starts at 7.30pm. Bulky items can be left near the exit for collection when you leave the Castle. All we ask is that you take any rubbish home with you. What could be more atmospheric for a murder mystery than the ruins at twilight? However the walk will involve steep rough paths and steps and we must leave the castle ruins before dark for safety reasons. So anyone taking part does so at their own risk. Due to the popularity of the past walks and necessity to restrict numbers for safety it is strongly recommended that early bookings be made by purchasing tickets at the National Trust Shop, The Square, Corfe Castle or by phone on 01929 480921. Nice to see them… April sees the blazing forsythia bushes gleaming with their bright yellow flowers, and the sight of this reminds us to visit garden centres to buy our bedding plants ready for May. If you’ve a garden, then you’ll know the delight of planting a colourful display, and you’ll know the thrill of seeing your perennials coming into flower bang on time. What’s often forgotten is the huge number of almost-anonymous people whose names are embedded in the names of plants. We enjoy the flowers, but totally forget the human beings they should remind us of… …people like Claude Aubriet (1665-1710), a French flower and animal painter who travelled to the near east to find the objects of his art – and whose name gives us the lovely aubretia for our borders. Or Monsieur Matthias de l’Obel, (15381616), a Flemish naturalist, born in Lille, who was an enthusiastic traveller, plant collector, and author of early books on botany. He was the prestigious physician to our King James I – and gives his name to our popular little lobelia flower. Many of us will be planting begonias –

A pink variety of the hyacinth flower wonderfully colourful and long-lasting. They are named after Michel Bégon (1638-1710), a French governor of Santa Domingo. Th e ‘b egonia’ was first discovered in Mexico by Père Plumier, an early botanist and monk, and he named it after Bégon, who was his patron. And of course we can’t forget the fuchsias – named after Leonhard Fuchs (15011566) who was appointed Professor of Medicine at Tübingen university at the early age of thirty-four. Fuchs wrote several books, including one giving advice on how to treat patients suffering from the plague, and this was published in London during the reign of Elizabeth I. Père Plu mier also discovered the ‘fuchsias’, about the year 1700 – long after Fuchs had died – but he decided to name it after Fuchs, who of course never saw the flower himself! There are so many flowers and shrubs named after people who are themselves virtually unknown: abelia, from Dr Clarke
