4 Dear Ferndown & West Parley residents, Happy Mother’s Day to Edition 142 all our wonderful Mums, Grans, Nans and Carers! Easter is also early this year and very nearly upon us, so we do hope you get to spend some time with family and friends and that the weather is kind Debbie & Stephen Corney to us all and we can get out and about! Spring officially starts on Tuesday 20th March which means we have daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, tulips and other delightful flowers to look forward to as well as (hopefully) a warmer, milder climate. Marvellous! This is the time of year we look at doing the spring cleaning. Out with that clutter, and the feather duster! I have already started mine and I have to say I have a really enjoyed it. There is quite some satisfaction in clearing out and freshening everything up. I am not sure how long that attitude will last though… Just as well we have experts to help make life easier for us. This is where your local Directory comes in useful. Keep it by the phone for when you will need it, after you have had a good read of course and sent in the prize wordsearch. Talking about Wildlife... The turning of the seasons...
As winter turns into spring, new life, colours and sounds in the Dorset landscape are emerging for the beginning of a new season. The winter has been long, so these changes in nature are most welcome, bringing along with them the longer and warmer days we’ve been looking forward to. The first signs of spring will be seeing the seasonal flowers popping up in gardens, woodlands and roadsides. The delicate and iconic snowdrop and daffodil are usually the first brave enough to bloom, despite the occasional frosty day, with the carpets of bluebells to follow in woodland in April and May. The skies will not only be brighter, but they will also be noisier, as birds such as wrens, blackbirds, robins, finches and even waxcaps, prepare for breeding and start their ‘dawn chorus’ in May. The dawn chorus is one of the best wildlife experiences in the UK, and one not to be missed, even if it means an early start (or if you’re a light sleeper!). Birds take part in their chorus as they’re looking for a mate and preparing to breed – if you can get up early enough, they are very active just before dawn, when their predators might be able to hear them, but still can’t quite see them. Butterflies are the next sign of spring. This year, some have been seen as early as January, according to Butterfly Conservation. The most likely species we’ll see will be those which have hibernated over the winter, as the warmer weather entices them out once again. The brimstone, red admiral and peacock are sometimes seen earlier in spring, with many people reporting the

brimstone flitting around hedgerows and in gardens this time of year. Moths can also be seen this early on in the year, and are often mistaken for a butterfly. Moths have a reputation for being drab and brown but this is not always the case as some are bright and vibrant such as the orange underwing or brimstone moth. Meanwhile, in our gardens, the transition between the harsh winter and spring is beginning. Do not presume that wildlife still doesn’t need a helping hand though, and keep putting out food and water for the birds, to help them through the colder days. Other tasks for the garden this time of year include putting up bird boxes and creating ‘wild’ areas with logs and twigs, and building a compost, for wildlife to make a home in your garden. Bournemouth to Paris Cycle – early bird offer Julia’s House is offering an early bird opportunity for its Bournemouth to Paris cycle ride for participants that sign up before 30th March 2018. The ride, which sets off on 6 September 2018, is a four-day cycle challenge from the sandy beaches of Bournemouth through 300 miles of some of the prettiest English and French countryside, villages and medieval market towns, ending in the beautiful city of Paris. Hannah Miller, Events and Challenge Fundraiser for Julia’s House said: “After catching the morning ferry to Cherbourg, the route hugs the beautiful French coastline, taking in the Normandy landing beaches before heading inland, passing through some of France’s most stunning northern countryside and villages. This is the ride’s second year and I am really looking forward to cycling with everyone again. ”
With long days in the saddle and some challenging hill climbs, the view of the Eiffel Tower which marks the end of the ride will be a welcome sight. There will be time on the final day to enjoy all that Paris has to offer. Brickmaking in West Parley Manufacturing bricks for local use has a long history in the village. Local brickyards were numerous across Dorset in the 18th and 19th Centuries in a large area from the Purbecks across to Hampshire. Brick making clay is a mix of sand and alumina and may contain chalk, lime, iron oxide and other materials. There are 15 or so different types of clay in different parts of Dorset giving rise to a wide variation in brick colours and textures. Different mixes, methods of handling and firing techniques resulted in some 60 variations from the hardest bricks used to line kilns and ovens through quality external bricks for good buildings to poorer quality for poorer buildings and internal walls. Initially expensive and used in better buildings, after costs fell from the middle of the 18th century bricks could be used in more functional buildings. Due to their weight the costs of transport were high and local brickyards could continue to be economic until the rise of low cost large scale commercial operations forced them to close. Maps of the West Parley area from 1870 to 1895 show a rectangular area marked as brickyard on East Parley Common to the east of the centre of Barrack Road, a kiln shown just south of the brickyard and a large excavated area to the north. This shows the whole process from digging the clay, worked it in the yard by treading the mix and adding other materials to make it consistent then putting the clay in moulds and storing it before firing in the kiln before being distributed by horse and cart . The kiln required a lot of heat to fire the clay and needed to be carefully controlled for successful brickmaking. There was plenty of oak, birch and hazel on both East and West Parley Commons and

End of Church Lane Parley Wood close by continues to be full of large oak trees even today. Late 19th Century maps also shows an old clay pit on Poor Common at Dudsbury partly infilled with water and it is assumed that this was an earlier site for brickmaking but no longer used. It is known that there are numerous pockets of clay around the village and exhausted clay extraction sites would be left to fill with rain water to form ponds for animals. Ponds south of Christchurch Rd opposite the Memorial Hall, in Church Lane and close to Wood Town Farm show where clay has been removed, perhaps to feed other kilns close by. The earliest brick buildings in the area, dating from the 1770s, are at Hillamsland (Dudsbury Golf Club), Parley Manor, Barnes Farm, Brambles Farm, Stocks Farm (The Curlew), Horns Inn, houses on Christchurch Road close to Barrack Road, buildings at the bottom of Church Lane and along Ringwood Road in Longham. There were numerous brickyards around Parley, many only being open for a few years till the local clay ran out. From East Parley Common there were brickyards across what is now Bournemouth Airport to Hurn and houses called Brickfields Cottages in Hurn reflect the local industry. A brickyard was in operation to the east of Bear Cross (the pub formerly being known as the Bricklayers Arms) for 20years from 1880 and Poole is well known for its bricks and pottery, earthenware and pipes with large pottery works at West Howe, Hamworthy and Parkstone until the 1960s. Lions Centenary boost for Avon Heath Country Park
Lions International was founded in 1917 in the USA and now has 1.45 million members worldwide. To mark the centenary, Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club gave £3720 to Avon Heath to help improve facilities at the park, particularly for local children. The money has now been used to provide a new rope bridge, which you can see here, together with oak picnic tables and benches, two of the benches being carved with children’s art.

Kiri te Kanawa By Tim Saunders
Celebrated opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has announced that she will not sing in public again. Her last public performance was in Melbourne, Australia in October 2016. “Before I’d gone on, I said, right, this it. And that was the end,” the soprano recently revealed on the BBC’s Today programme. “I don’t want to hear my voice. It is in the past. When I’m teaching young singers, and hearing beautiful young fresh voices, I don’t want to put my voice next to theirs.” Perhaps the greatest success for the New Zealand opera star was singing at the wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1981. A worldwide audience of 600m tuned in to watch this memorable occasion. In 2013 she appeared in ITV’s Downton Abbey playing the Australian operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Te Kanawa has received accolades in many countries, singing a wide array of works in multiple languages from the 17th to the 20th centuries. She is particularly associated with the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini, and has found particular success in portraying princesses, nobility, and other similar characters on stage. Born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in Gisborne, New Zealand she has Maori and European ancestry, but little is known about her birth parents. She was adopted by Thomas Te Kanawa, a Maori, and his wife, Nell. She had never made any attempt to contact her natural parents, but around this time, her half-brother Jim Rawstron contacted her. Initially, she was not willing to meet him, but later agreed. This episode ended in bitterness, and she has since reaffirmed her decision to have nothing to do with her birth family. Educated at St Mary’s College, Auckland, she formally trained in operatic singing by Dame Sister Mary Leo. Beginning her singing career as a mezzo-soprano, she later developed into a soprano. Her recording of the “Nuns’ Chorus” from the Strauss operetta Casanova was New Zealand’s first gold record.
She met Desmond Park on a blind date in London in August 1967, and they married six weeks later at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland adopting two children, Antonia and Thomas. The couple divorced in 1997. In her teens and early 20s, Te Kanawa was a pop star and popular entertainer at clubs in New Zealand and regularly appeared in newspapers and magazines. In 1963, she was runner-up to Malvina Major in the Mobil Song Quest with her performance of “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca, and in 1965 she won the same competition. As winner, she received a grant to study in London. In 1966, she then won the prestigious Australian Melbourne Sun-Aria contest, which Major had also won the previous year. Both students had been taught by Sister Mary Leo. Later that year, without an audition, she enrolled at the London Opera Centre to study under Vera Rózsa and James Robertson, who reputedly said Te Kanawa lacked a singing technique when she arrived at the school but did have a gift for captivating audiences. She first appeared on stage as the Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, as well as in performances of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in December 1968 at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. She also sang the title role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. In 1969, she sang Elena in Rossini’s La donna del lago at the Camden Festival; and was offered the role of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro after an audition of which the conductor, Colin Davis, said, “I couldn’t believe my ears. I’ve taken thousands of auditions, but it was such a fantastically beautiful voice.” Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Roast Beef with Rosemary & Garlic
Ingredients 1 joint of beef 1 -3 tsp coarse salt(generous amount) 1 -3tsp fresh cracked pepper 1 tbsp fresh rosemary 10 garlic cloves

Settle the joint and let it stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour. 2. Mix the salt and pepper together. 3. Insert some of the rosemary directly into the skin of the joint, scoring with a sharp knife to help you insert it. 4. Preheat the oven to 375oF. 5. Now score the joint in 10 random spots for the garlic. Rub the meat with the seasoning mix. Place cloves into the slices. 6. Place the roast on a rack in the pan with the rosemary top side up. 7. Roast for 1 hour and then turn off oven. 8. Leave the roast in the oven but do not open oven door for 3 hours. 9. About 30 to 40 minutes before serving time, turn oven to 375 oF and reheat the roast. 10. Make sure not to remove roast or re-open the oven door from time roast is put in until 20 minutes before ready to serve. 11. Remove roast 20 minutes after heating.

GUIDE Carrots
There is absolutely nothing like a carrot pulled fresh from the ground... ...that wonderful smell, which soon disappears and is never apparent in shop bought ones and the taste of that sweet orange root can only be achieved by growing your own. They can be sown from March to July and can be grown in containers at least 12 inches deep. Like any plant with a long tap root, carrots do not like being transplanted so should be sown directly into the soil where they are to grow. They are happiest in light, rather sandy soil so if you have heavy clay, you should add plenty of sharp sand (not builders sand) Germination won't be so good if the soil hasn't warmed up and it's best to sow the seed into well prepared soil that has already been watered. It is important to sow the seed as thinly as
possible, which isn't easy as the seed is so small. Try mixing it with a handful of sand which stops the seed from sticking together and makes it easier to see where they're going. However careful you are, the seedlings will probably need thinning at least once to give the carrots room to swell. This operation is best carried out in the evening as carrot fly can be a problem, particularly in early summer when they lay their eggs around the roots) They are attracted by the smell of disturbed plants and thinning’s should be moved away immediately. Try growing chives, onions or garlic around the carrots to mask the smell or you could put fleece (available from garden centres or some hardware shops) over the carrots after sowing.

The Revival of Vinyl Vinyl has made a comeback. Sales have spiked higher than they were in the late eighties and now you can even pick up an LP or two along with your weekly groceries at the supermarket. The music industry seems to have done a complete 360, throwing it back to the fifties with this not-sonew revamp of the way we listen to music.
But why? The way I see it, it’s to do with the way we view music. In the current era of digital downloads and unlimited streaming, music has gone a bit stale. Back in the day it was fresh and exciting. When The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin released a new track people would queue outside stores to pick up their own copy. If you wanted to hear the latest songs you would have to buy the singles, and with that came a lot more enjoyment and charm than just clicking a button and blasting it from your phone speakers. There’s a sense of authenticity and charm with the sound of music through a record player that is lost with digital recordings. Vinyl has had such a whirlwind renaissance, from almost dying out after the invention of CDs, to outselling digital downloads in 2016, and part of that is down to the fact that recorded music was made to be played on vinyl. Simply nothing compares to the novelty of hearing your favourite tracks played on the format they originated from. The 21st April marks Record Store Day: a celebration of the originality of music and independent record shops. To keep the magic of vinyl alive, a brilliant line-up of bands and artists release various limitededition coloured re-presses, exclusive
singles of unheard tracks and even perform in-store gigs. Dorset is home to a whole array of independent stores. From the charming and nostalgic to the straight up whacky, no two are even remotely the same. Whether it’s for a blast from the past, or to delve into this new wave of revived vinyl, go and check out your local record store and see what all this new fuss is about. By Kate Birch

Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI Quattro
By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk Fitted with a 3.0 litre V6 engine, the latest Audi A4 Avant becomes almost too powerful for its own good. Don’t get me wrong; the diesel lump is a real pearl, but there’s no way it returns the claimed 57.6mpg when riding on 19inch wheels. I found the car thirsty, and mid-30s was more realistic for me when driving two-up, with no luggage, on a mix of motorways, A and B-roads. The A4 estate model that Audi sent me came in top S line trim, and starts at £38,895, but with a few thousand pounds of options thrown at it, my test car was waving a £46,395 price-tag. You get a lot of kit for the cash, though and Audi is well-known for its upmarket, understated interiors that are both perfectly finished and intuitive. This A4 doesn’t dissatisfy; it has upscale materials everywhere and a straightforward, intelligible dashboard arrangement. Technology is plentiful, too. It includes: a reversing camera, parking sensors, three-zone climate control,
heated electric seats, and a powered, hands-free boot. The A4 Avant is among the best-looking estates on the market in Britain. It’s undeniably classy, and the large 3.0 litre diesel engine is so smooth that it feels more like a hard-hitting petrol unit. What’s more, indiscernible wind and road noise make the A4 the quietest cruiser in its class – by a long chalk. The ride is wonderful, and easily a match for BMW’s 3-series. The same goes for the car’s bobon handling. This practical five-up estate comes with Audi’s standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. It changes slickly, keeping the revs low except when Dynamic mode is selected. A moderate push of your right foot is all that’s required to build momentum hastily; stamp down hard, though and you’ll get to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.
