Stephen took me to see the Olly Murs Tribute at The St Leonards Hotel last month. It was a great night out! I highly recommend these tributes. The food was good and the singer, Joe Scripps, was excellent. We were able to let our hair down for the evening! So, this month there are flooring experts, builders, carpet and upholstery cleaners, blinds and dentists as well as garden designers, tree surgeons, painters and decorators, the all important estate and will planning, hearing experts and much more. Nellie took us to Milford on Sea and what a great weekend away we had! You can read “The Adventures of Nellie” on pages 38 and 39. West Parley’s Gardening Club

West Parley in Bloom
This year’s entry, in the South and South East in Bloom competition, has been expanded to recognise the considerable interest that residents have in making West Parley look brighter. There will be a back garden as well as a front garden competition and an entry into the ‘It’s your Neighbourhood’ category to showcase the work undertaken by all the hardworking local volunteer groups. Anyone interested in helping keep the village looking its best and getting some free exercise with like-minded residents should contact Stuart Couper (see below). Details of how to enter the front and back garden competitions will be announced soon.
Helping you help yourselves
Every May Bank Holiday the Bournemouth 7’s event is held close to the Airport. Last year the Organisers worked closely with West Parley and Hurn Parish Councils, Police and the Licensing Authorities to improve security at and around the event to minimise the impact on local residents and businesses after problems experienced in 2013. We will soon let you know about the arrangements for the event and details of local contacts in case you are affected during the event. Fortunately, there were
very few complaints last year but this feedback helps identify any problems that the Organisers need to deal with. Noise from the event has been a concern and is more closely controlled now. However, we are dependent on the direction of the wind for the extent the noise affects us so we hope it is mainly from the south west this year! On another matter, we will soon be reissuing the contact details to residents living close to the Recreation Ground so that they can contact us if they see anything suspicious going on. In 2013 nine caravans occupied the site for over a week causing considerable damage and rubbish round the site and serious concern to neighbours. Increased vigilance and extra security last year helped avoid a repeat of the incursion.
‘Good Neighbour Scheme’ Launched
A new scheme to help West Parley residents with small jobs round the house and garden has recently been launched by the Partnership for Older People Programme to cover Ferndown and West Parley. The aim is for local volunteers to carry out minor jobs, such as changing a light bulb, moving small items of furniture, dog walking if ill etc. This work is done for a donation to cover the volunteer’s expenses. Clients wishing to use the scheme should phone 01202 834034. Organisers are looking for people to help with this work. West Parley already has a network of volunteers who undertake community tasks, such as litter picking, leaflet distribution and working on the appearance of the village as well as our Volunteer Drivers transport scheme. This new scheme is a great way to meet other residents, especially those in need. Anyone interested in helping out should
contact the Co-ordinator, John Muggleton on 01202 861832.
Closure of New Road
When you read this New Road will be closed to traffic and no doubt there will be a considerable amount of disruption whilst the essential road maintenance work is being done. It is a difficult time for all the businesses at Parley Cross affected by the closure so we urge residents to continue to support our local business people now and in the future. We all know the saying ‘Use it or Lose it’ and this is particularly relevant at present.
Glenmoor Road
It is good to see the changes that have taken place at Glenmoor Road shops. An extended hairdresser and a new coffee shop mean that all the shop units are occupied. A number of large planters have been put in place in recent years so the whole area looks the best it has done for some time. The new 20 mph speed limit signs are now working in front of the shops and close to Parley First School.
Annual Parish Meeting
The 2015 event will be held in the Memorial Hall on 24th April. Doors open at 7 to view the public displays and meeting starts at 7.30pm. It is a good way for residents to get up to date with what is happening in the village and a chance to ask any questions on Parish issues. Put the date in your diary and come along to be involved in the community.
Change of Councillors
Unfortunately Cllr Kieran Ryan has had to resign from the Parish Council due to work pressures but we are pleased to announce that Cllr Malcolm Plascott has joined us. He has brought some fresh ideas about how to improve things in the village.
Elections
The May elections will cover National, District and Parish Councils. All current Councillors in West Parley, apart from Cllr Geoff Dark, who is taking a well earned rest after many years of service to the local community, are willing to continue to work hard for all residents. Much of what the Parish Council does is laid out in the Local Parish Plan, based on residents’ views on what they wanted to see here, but new ideas and thoughts on what is needed are always welcome. Petanque is coming to Parley! Mysterious ground works just outside Parley Country Club are the precursor to the introduction of Petanque – also known as Boules – to West Parley. There is already a league in Dorset and we look forward to seeing the game in action very soon.

Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. I’ve heard that the law has changed and I have to mediate because I’m divorcing. Is that right? No. As of April 2014, the Government have said that people who want to issue an application at Court to resolve finances within a divorce must first attend a Mediation Information and Assessment meeting (known as a MIAM). This means that, apart from in very limited circumstances, you have to see a mediator and find out about mediation as an option. A MIAM will also inform you about other options open to you which include collaborative law, lawyer-assisted negotiations and the traditional court process.

West Parley gets bigger A recent review of parish boundaries carried out by East Dorset District Council has extended the boundary of West Parley to the north to include a large area of Parley Common and seven properties at the end of Barrack Road. With no road connection to Ferndown these properties always ‘looked’ to the south. This is the latest in a number of changes to the parish boundary over the last 170 years driven by the expansion of the south east of Dorset from a relatively unpopulated part of the County into an area of large towns and medium sized villages. West Parley was once a very large parish that extended over 3400 acres including both West Parley and West Moors. In 1851 there were only some 290 residents reflecting the mainly agricultural nature of the area, little changed from the Middle Ages. Much of the area was unproductive heathland. The parish was actually two virtually separate roughly rectangular portions of land only touching at a point north of Tricketts Cross but this was extended in 1886 by a further 500 acres to include an area east of West Moors up to the current A31. With this change the parish became coherent, but very narrow, stretching from 3 Legged Cross all the way south to the River Stour. At this time there were few houses in West Parley itself, these being mainly along Christchurch Road and
Church Lane with a few scattered farm buildings down narrow side lanes. West Moors was the largest settlement in the parish at some 190 residents out of a total of 336 for the whole parish. It also had its own railway station. Rapid expansion of Ferndown in the 20th century, still part of a large Hampreston parish, and of West Moors, led to further boundary changes and West Parley parish was virtually halved in size in 1956 when large areas of land were transferred to Hampreston and to the newly created West Moors parish. In small compensation, a part of Poor Common and an area of Dudsbury were transferred from Hampreston parish. Hampreston parish changed its name to Ferndown Town in 1986. The 1956 changes left West Parley parish with 1120 acres. For hundreds of years the eastern edge of Parley had been the ancient Dorset / Hampshire boundary but this changed in 1974 when Christchurch and Hurn moved into Dorset. John Cullen

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie was ready for a break this month. After all it was half term and Hayden was off school, so what better excuse than to ‘get away’ for a few days. We live in such a gorgeous area it was difficult to choose where to go. Nellie eventually decided to take us just along the coast, through the New Forest, to the Shorefield Country Park near Milford on Sea. As the weather has been a bit unpredictable, and still a bit on the chilly side, we booked a small chalet with heating and Nellie parked herself proudly outside. I have to say that Nellie did well, the chalet was really good value for money and just what we needed for a few days off. There are some rather grand looking log cabins as well as impressive caravans on site with hot tubs outside, so maybe we will try one of those next time? Anyway what we had was perfect for what we wanted. We did arrive a bit early, all very keen to have our time off, so Nellie and her whistling kettle provided us with a lovely cuppa, while we waited for

Nellie arriving at Shorefield Country Park the keys to our ‘weekend escape’. Of course Hayden was very excited about the pool, so once we were settled in and bags were unpacked, (were we really only staying for a few days??) off we set for the leisure facilities. While Hayden practiced his hand stands at the deep end and generally glided around like I will never be able to do, I had a relaxed steam bath, sauna and jacuzzi. Much more fun… at least at 50! A caravan park from this viewpoint is ideal - it caters for all ages. What I liked about this park also is the setting. Located in a wonderful forest of trees, much wildlife, (I am sure we saw a woodpecker) and fields, yet the sea is literally ten minutes walk away. Saturday was glorious with blue skies and those well known English fleecy white clouds. Love it. We marched off for the coast, doing a short Geocache enroute. The ‘treasure’ this time was tiny and Stephen was the winner, finding it very well hidden in a bench.
39 Once we got to the sea there was a large banner warning us not to swim. Though it was sunny it was still a little chilly, so that made me smile. I then looked more closely at the banner and was fascinated by the iron sea defences that were very dangerously placed under the water at this time. That got me thinking about our coast line. This beach is full of pebbles and the waves were crashing vociferously onto them. If you close your eyes it is really quite dramatic. There is in fact a lot of work having to be done due to erosion, moving landscapes and these old sea defences. I discovered that the rock in this area is softer than that near Old Harry Rocks and there is a whole Shoreline Management Plan to help preserve our coastline all the way from Hurst Spit at Milford on Sea to Durlston Head near Swanage, including the bays in Poole and Bournemouth. That is all quite an undertaking! It is surprising really what we take for granted. The whole concept got me thinking about old times, the future and life in general, but that is a bit deep for the Adventures of Nellie! We had a whale of a time, not literally as we were not allowed to swim, throwing stones in

No Swimming?? I was so looking forward... the water, running enthusiastically away from the waves as they thundered towards us. Hayden got pretty wet and thought that was hysterical. He couldn’t stop laughing. There are many beach huts along this stretch and some are delightfully painted while others are quite dilapidated. From what I read there is a whole question over these English Seaside getaways and their safety in this area. I certainly would be sorry to see them go. One local artist was collecting smooth pebbles for her next project, coming down from her little wooden hideaway onto the beach with her bucket. How exiting. Finally we made it to…the café! It was perfect especially as it has a park for the children. “Needles Eye Café” it is called, obviously due to its stunning views of the coast and indeed The Needles on the Isle of Wight. After a good lunch, rest and relaxation, we set off back to the chalet and Nellie waiting patiently for us. We didn’t get to Hurst Castle and will have to save that for another trip. The fresh air, walk and wonderful views were just what we needed. What an amazing place we live in. So, where will Nellie go next? By Debbie Corney

Abby Batson is 13 and spends much of her time “down the yard”. Here is her story…
“Hi Everyone. My name is Abby, I am 13 and love ponies and horses! I am going to tell you about life at the yard. It is a great place with beautiful views, near Poole. It has about 40 horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes from mini Shetland ponies to beautiful large thorough breds. It is a very friendly yard with lots of chatting (there are a lot of girls…) and laughs as well as hard work. Here is the lovely Banjo. He is very cheeky, fun and full of personality. I have been riding him since May. He is 24 an old gentleman in human years but absolutely full of life. He loves fruit including melons, polo mints and hugs! At the weekend Banjo was helping me ‘poo pick’ in his field… as you can see. Well I am not sure helping is the right word! Sometimes we take a break from all of our mucking out, grooming, sweeping and general yard duties…. This is Ruby the dog enjoying attention and a jumping lesson with the girls. The outdoor life is great, if a little cold at this time of year, but my regular flask of hot chocolate always saves the day. Thanks Mum…”
