If a patient’s condition deteriorates the system automatically triggers a response from an appropriately skilled clinician, enabling a quicker clinical response, improving safety and enhancing patient care. It enables staff to prioritise treatment for the sickest patients. Listening and learning Listening to you and learning from your experiences is really important. This includes hearing from those who may find it difficult to have a voice. Every week we hold a Carers’ Café where carers and relatives can share their experiences with a qualified nurse over a coffee. We also have a range of support information and resources available for you. We are in the main atrium of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital from 1.30-2.30pm and look forward to seeing you. We have also invited local independent consumer watchdog Healthwatch Dorset to collect people’s views on our hospital and its services. Healthwatch will be at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital a couple of days a month for the next six months. The first two dates are Wednesday 5 March from 9am to 1pm and Friday 14 March from 12pm to 4pm when they’ll be talking to people in the main entrance area and main outpatients department. Local Parish Councils and Homewatch groups help fund additional bicycle for local police use Local police officers now have an additional unmarked bicycle for use on patrols around the area thanks to funding from the Parish Councils and Homewatch groups of West Moors and St Leonards & St Ives. Each donated £100 with a further £20 donation coming from Councillor Peter Finney. This bicycle, a Saracen Tufftrax Disc, was supplied by Pedals Cycle Centre, who kindly upgraded the specification at no extra cost. The bicycle was presented to PC 1811 Dan Avey-Hebditch by Sharon Worsfold of Pedals Cycle Centre with representatives from each of the Parish Councils and Homewatch groups in attendance.

Local company takes up a fundraising challenge for Pancreatic Cancer Action Local company, MVS, renowned for expertise in Audio Visual equipment and Electrical operations are cycling 100 miles from their offices in Ferndown to One Tower Bridge in London to raise funds and awareness of pancreatic cancer, a disease that is in dire need of attention. Matt Cowan, Managing Director, said of the challenge: “The idea of this event was initiated when one of our longest serving colleagues and friend was suddenly diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, which made us learn and realise more about the challenges faced with combating this aggressive disease”. MVS has the support of retired professional cyclist, Daniel Lloyd, (pictured) from Christchurch, who has been assisting the team in preparation for the big challenge. Lucy de’Lemos, Fundraising Manager of Pancreatic Cancer Action said: “I think what you guys are about to do sounds fantastic! I am sure you are aware of the lack of funding Pancreatic Cancer receives and it is with people like yourselves that we can really make
a valuable difference. We really appreciate all your support.” The MVS team are of various levels of fitness but for everyone involved this is going to be a real physical challenge. West Parley Neighbourcar is in need of more drivers WEST PARLEY NEIGHBOURCAR is now up and running very successfully, having undertaken over 140 separate trips since the beginning of September 2013. All of these trips are within a 10 mile radius of West Parley and usually take less than 2 hours of your time.
We have a dedicated team of 13 drivers, some of which are husband/ wife team, who are continuing to keep the scheme running very smoothly.
However we are now looking for a few more drivers to cope with future demand and the need for our existing drivers to take time out for holidays etc. We are providing a very valuable service to our local community helping people who would otherwise find it extremely difficult to get and about. If the relationship should break down and we have to sell the property, is there anything that I can do to protect my share of the deposit? Yes there is. Your Solicitor will advise you that you should hold the equity in the property, being the money that you have in the property after paying off the Mortgage and meeting the costs of the sale, as Tenants in Common. Tenants in Common – an expression which is nothing to do with Landlord & Tenant – means that you have two separate shares in that equity. Your Solicitor would suggest that you make a Declaration of

The short answer to this is no! Where terms as to the division of the family assets cannot be agreed upon divorce then the Court will eventually have to make a decision. Accordingly, our advice to our clients as to what might be an appropriate division of

History of sports in West Parley Parley Sports Club dates from the late 1940s when local sportsmen returning from the War founded a football and cricket club using Parish Council land on Christchurch Road. Within 3 years money had been raised and changing rooms and a pavilion had been built that formed the basis to start a thriving local sports scene that continues to this day. The breakthrough came in October 1961 when, after a huge amount of local effort by members and willing helpers, a new clubhouse to replace the previous tin shed was opened by the well known cricket commentator, John Arlott. Many local businesses donated materials and resources to support the local community help and donations. At the same time bushes were cleared on land to the north of the clubhouse to make new sports pitches. A new design of bulldozer blade being tested at the military experimental site in Christchurch was used to clear undergrowth and local farmers then rotovated the land free of charge. The cricket club progressed through the 1970s and 1980s and became a strong Division One presence in the Bournemouth League and went up the

The clubhouse at Parley Sports Club divisions in the Dorset League, becoming Dorset champions in 2000, going through the season unbeaten. Following this the club has built its youth sections and can now field very successful teams at every age group. In 2009 the Under 15 team won the Dorset Premier League championship; the youngest side ever to do so. The Club leads the way for Girls Cricket in Dorset. The football teams have also had a spectacularly successful history since the early 1960s repeatedly winning or being runner-up in both Combination League and League Cups and are now leading lights in the Dorset and the Bournemouth Premier Leagues. Numerous Youth and a Ladies team provide opportunities to join a successful organisation. The quality of the sport at Parley is recognised nationally with financial support being given by both football and cricket sponsors. Improvements to changing facilities and drainage of the sports fields are planned. A recent major refurbishment of the clubhouse financed by Club supporters has brought the facilities up to the highest standard. These are regularly used by the sports teams and as a thriving social club for members and local residents. John Cullen

Barn Owls
Barns owls are amongst the most beautiful birds in Britain. Although some barn owls are brown in colour, the majority have golden and silver-grey feathers and white under-parts. They also have bright-white, heart-shaped faces, which resemble masks. Contrary to popular belief, these mystical birds do not hoot; instead, they hiss and emit long, unsettling shrieks. Barn owls consume small mammals (mice, voles and shrews), which they hunt from the air above. These striking birds are formidable hunters, but unfortunately the recent bad weather may have a negative impact on their ability to hunt: their wings are not waterproof, but designed with tiny serrations on their flight feathers so they are able to sweep through the air soundlessly. This unnerving ability has earned them the title ‘Ghost Owl.’ In addition, their sensitive hearing enables them to pinpoint the smallest sound whilst they are in flight. Ordinarily, barn owls hunt at dusk or dawn, although they will occasionally hunt during the day and at night (they do not require sight to hunt). Barn owls favour the open country. They will venture into the woodland if necessary, but prefer to hunt along the edges of woods. Barn owls breed when food is abundant. Ordinarily, they lay 4 to 7 eggs, 2-3 days apart.
Each egg will hatch after 31-32 days incubation. Females will sit on their young for an additional 3 weeks after they have hatched. During this time, their mate will bring food to the nest. Barn owls were once Britain’s most common owl species; however, the numbers have declined by up to 70% in recent years. This is due to the growing use of rodenticides, which are highly toxic. There are an estimated 4,000 pairs in the UK today, but there is concern that numbers are ever decreasing, and in recent years, the wet summers and cold winters have made conditions difficult for them. Decades ago shaving was one of the biggest services offered in the Barbershop and by the introduction of the disposable razor the trend died out. Nowadays men are growing to take care of themselves a little more and want that extra bit of pampering and that is why Parley Barbers now offers Traditional Shaving using a Cut Throat Razor. Storm damaged trees could benefit garden wildlife – with your help Two iconic trees were felled by the February storms in Wimborne last weekend. Knoll Gardens lost its stunning Monterey Pine along with the garden’s tallest tree, the amazing Eucalyptus chapmaniana. Both were listed on Knoll’s tree trail that features a selection of the rare and unusual trees found throughout the gardens. Knoll’s owner, Neil Lucas said, ”It was a real wrench to wake up and discover these wonderful trees had fallen. The shallow rooted eucalyptus literally just toppled over as its roots had less and less solid ground to cling too. Its fall has seriously damaged a water feature, but if we are able to sensitively relandscape the area we will try to save this iconic tree in its now, horizontal position. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Wow, what a mixture of weather we have had these last few months! Nellie took us all the way to Hull to see my family and we had 7 hours of solid rain getting there. Poor Nellie, she looked pretty drowned by the time we arrived. In fact a few days before we left, a shop owner pointed out that Nellie was “illegal!” Astonished, I asked “Why?”… He was right, Nellie was so dirty with all the spray, mud and debris off the roads, that you couldn’t see her number plate. Well I am pleased to say that she has had a wash and there should be NO policeman knocking on our door! Anyway, the journey back from Hull was far more pleasant and I just had to show you our panorama view of Nellie under the magnificent Humber Bridge. Back to ‘sunny’ Dorset and last weekend we went on a Geo Cache. If you have never done a Geo Cache before and like walking, exploring sights you may not have seen previously,
I highly recommend it. It is free! All you need to do is go online to www. geocaching.com. It is a “real world treasure hunt” and there are literally hundreds of walks with a purpose…to find the hidden “treasure”. The hidden treasure is actually a box of odds and ends that walkers have added, which you can take and replace with some thing else. There is often a list of all the ‘geo cachers’ who have done the same hunt which you can add your details to. The way you find the hidden treasure is by use of a GPS device which you can buy, or indeed find an app on your phone. Once you have printed out the Geo Cache that you want to do, there are lots of clues which you use to discover the coordinates and thus find the trail to the treasure. It is ideal for youngsters who would otherwise complain about a ‘boring old walk’ and basically make your life a misery whilst you try and enjoy the fresh country or
39 said it was the middle of February and I hadn’t thought of that. Following the coordinates from the clues given, the Geo Cache took us over the fields with three wonderful Shire horses (not to be messed with, I could see…) and great views across the River Stour and the Priory at Christchurch. We would never have taken this route, or discovered it at all without having looked on line for a Geo Cache. A couple of the clues were a little tricky but we found the treasure! The tree was lying in a pool of water and Hayden and Stephen had fun doing ‘a tight rope walk’ to get to the buried treasure box. Victory! The first clue... seaside air and the views. Everyone wins! It is exciting, it can be competitive, and it gets you outside. Saturday was a beautiful day and Nellie chose to take us to Hengistbury Head. The Geo Cache took us along the river behind the golf course. Protected here from the wind, it really was very warm. Hayden, knowing we were near the sea and being a keen swimmer himself, announced disappointedly, “Oh Mum, you didn’t bring the swimmers!” I laughed and

Finder’s reward We followed the trail back past the golf course, had a much appreciated and rather large ice cream reward, a cup of coffee in Nellie and a final brisk walk along the wonderful coastline. Once we were back on the cliff top with a very cold sea breeze, though a gorgeously bright day, I think Hayden forgot about the “swimmers”! Friday 16th May – Sunday 18th May 2014 – Wimborne, Dorset 2014’s Vdub At The Pub Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before, with a great new line-up of live music, acoustic artists and live DJ’s. We will of course be bringing back our ever popular Show & Shine competition, with this year’s classes including: Best Beatle, Best Type 2 Bay, Best Split, Best Type 25 Air & Water, Best Type 4 Van, Best Newie, Best Golf/Polo, Best Other, Best Paint, Best Rat and Best Overall, for our Volkswagen lovers to show off their wheels. Our line-up of music this year will see the return of Vdub veteran Si Genaro, (recently becoming a national personality after his quirky performance on BBC’s The VoiceUK) Saturday Sun, (in January being listed as one of The Guardian’s new band of the day) and The Crematics, (having previously supported the likes of Bastille and The Rizzle Kicks) just to name a few. As well as live music all weekend, we are kicking off the show this year with Friday night’s DJ night, where 2014 Vdub festivals goers can start their weekend by dancing the night away. The first Vdub at the Pub took place back in 2008 at Drusilla’s Inn in Dorset and was the first time the festivals creator John had combined engines, beer and live music. Dubbers came from far and wide to Drusilla’s Inn for 2 years before the numbers grew so high that it was time to find a larger show ground. In 2010 Vdub moved to the grounds of Wimborne Town Football Club, where it still runs today. Last year’s festival was a 3 day event, catering for everybody’s needs, with live music all weekend, DJ’s playing into the night and local Brewery Dorset Piddle Beer holding a mini beer Festival in the live music tent. We also had the Dorset Stormtroopers in attendance all weekend entertaining the crowds. We sold out our camping spaces a week before the festival and with the help of local land owners we managed to increase our camping facilities and open and second camping field for the second year running! The 2014 show will be our best yet. We hope to see you there!

Anya sets her sights on the Winter Olympics 2018 Winter sports are certainly in the news at the moment with GB achievements in the Winter Olympics and we have recently made one of our first awards of 2014 to support a local young lady who is determined to get to the next Games in 2018. Anya Kay has shown exceptional talent and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation will be supporting her with funding towards her expenses to attend the British Bobsleigh Championships in March. Anya has been selected for the ‘Futures Programme’ and will
be among the team of athletes being prepared for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The picture below shows Anya, second from the right, with the GB Futures Team. We are extremely proud to support Anya and wish her every success for the future.

Gain the upper hand now!
Spring should really be on it’s way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too! Jobs for March:Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. Plant first early potatoes later in the month. Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes.
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6º are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it
is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeks, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Ferndown Pram Race 2014 21st June 2014 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm Starting at The Old Thatch
Our supporters usually love a bit of friendly competition and mix that with a beer or two for the perfect event!! JTYAF teams are needed for the Ferndown Pram Race 2014 . Each team will need a ‘pram’ with two axles and 4 wheels, 4 pushers plus 1 (adult) baby – the £75 fee (a charge of £15 per person) includes 3 ‘Beer Tokens’ per person. Fancy Dress is optional but will add a bit of fun to the day. The race will start at the Old Thatch, Wimborne Road and take in several ‘Pit Stops’ three of which will be at pubs along the route. The Pure Drop, the Night Jar and the Barrington Theatre Bar. At each pub ‘Pit Stop’ every team member will be required to drink a pint of beer or a soft drink and the baby will not be permitted to leave its pram. There will also be a few forfeits to complete at various locations along the way.

A smoke alarm without batteries is ‘a useless piece of plastic’ That is the message from Group Manager Karen Adams, Head of Prevention at Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. Karen leads a team of firefighters and officers, who are taking DFRS’s safety message out into the community, with a particular focus on educating vulnerable and hard to reach groups. When someone dies in a fi re, it is always upsetting. At Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, our aim is to reduce all preventable fire deaths to zero. We want to see every home in Dorset with a working smoke alarm and that means testing your smoke alarms every week! With the clock change fast approaching, when you go around your home changing the time on all your clocks, take the time to test your smoke alarms too! Karen said: “We provide a FREE home safety check service. This means fi refi ghters and DFRS staff visit residents in their homes and if appropriate, fit or replace smoke alarms, advise on the use of candles, unattended cooking, electric blankets, overloading sockets, chimneys, low energy light bulbs, escape plans and much more. This is all free of charge with the aim of encouraging people to think about fire safety in the home.” She added: “People need to consider their night-time routine – close doors,
keep an escape route clear, and check they know where the door key is so they can let themselves out. Smoke alarms should be tested once a week to make sure they are still working and in good condition. Faith Healer
It takes listening to precisely fi ve seconds of Paloma Faith’s comeback single to realise that you are already in the company of one of the best pop tracks that you are going to hear all year. By the time it gets to the chorus of Can’t Rely on You, with its defiant stomp and backing vocals from the songs’ creator, hit-maker-in-chief Pharrell Williams, it also becomes patently clear that Faith, reinvigorated and buoyant, is set to enjoy a bumper year. Can’t Rely on You is the lead track of her forthcoming third album A Perfect Contradiction, and her best yet: as equally upbeat and sassy as it is soulful, and with a positivity that’s impossible to resist. The inspiration, Faith says, came from not wanting to make a record as downbeat as its predecessor Fall to Grace, which documented failed relationships to mostly melancholy, ballad-like fare. “When I was touring the last album I got a bit bored of being upset,” Faith says. “I think sometimes when you write sad songs you write them in a moment when it’s like therapy, but then when you’re singing them 18 months later it’s like picking off a scab. This time I knew I needed to inject some hope. There’s some heartache, but it’s got a hopeful vibe to it. And I’ve returned to my soul roots, working with people I’ve admired for a long time.”
A Perfect Contradiction is an evocative title - where did that come from? “I mean perfect contradiction in terms of the last album, because that was melancholic, but also in everyday life. You can’t have real joy without real sadness. It extends to a conversation I had with Pharrell. He was asking me about myself and I said I feel an affinity with people who are a perfect mix of contradictions. And he said ‘do you think you are?’ and I said ‘yeah’ and then he told me I should call my album that. I went home and mulled it over; I decided it was a really good title, because it meant a lot of things. It’s to do with accepting difference within ourselves as well as other people and our experiences.” Faith worked with a host of names on A Perfect Contradiction (Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, Diane Warren) but it is inevitably the collaboration with Pharrell that is of most intrigue. “He approached me at a party to work
61 with me and we wrote a couple of songs together, and as we got to know each other through that time he said that he had this song that he’d written that he’d been sitting on for ages. He said he thought it would suit me, and did I want to hear it. I was like ‘of course’, and I loved it. It totally has my name on it. “Pharrell is very nice, humble, and so likeable. He works very hard and throws a lot away, because he only wants the best to come out.” He is certainly is a happy fellow, and the go-to man for a smash hit, isn’t he? “Yes, but you want to hear the ones that don’t make it, though!” Faith is arguably as well known for her sense of style than she is for her music, and her appearance is a vital component of the entire songstress/ fashion icon package. “For as long as I can remember I’ve had it drummed into me that presentation is important. My family is full of women who really make an effort. I’ve never been around people who just wear jeans and t-shirt. “In fact, the other day I was walking around Brick Lane with my mum, my aunt and my cousin. This girl came up and said ‘you four look like brilliantly dressed women; can I take a picture for
my art project?’ She later wrote to me on Twitter later to say ‘sorry, I had no idea it was you!’ It was so funny.” But getting stopped in the street was partly what made Faith head across the Atlantic to make A Perfect Contradiction. “I do get stopped a lot – it’s flattering but it’s difficult to detach yourself. Ultimately, I wanted to write an album that was down to earth and about real issues, and I didn’t feel that my life was conducive to that over here. It’s not a realistic lifestyle to have being stopped by people all the time; it doesn’t promote a realistic attitude of life. People can’t relate to it.” After A Perfect Contradiction hits the shops in March, Faith says she can’t wait to get on the road and reinterpret the new songs for a live audience. “We haven’t planned it yet but we’ll hopefully be touring towards the end of the year. I am looking forward to going out and touring it - it’s a musician’s album. My band love it; they can’t wait to show off, and nor can I!” Shaun Curran Paloma Faith’s new album A Perfect Contradiction is out March 10th, on RCA Records.
