Jubilee Fund: JTYAF Awards £34,000 to Local Schools The Trustees of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) were delighted to make awards of £34,000 to 6 local schools in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Awards were made to the Headteachers with volunteers, students and trustees gathered to celebrate this fantastic achievement. The Jubilee Funding was made available to schools in the Ferndown area for special enrichment projects aimed at supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the children. Presenting the cheques during Mental Health Awareness Week added an important focus to these awards. Ferndown Upper School will use their award to fully fund a wall art project which will provide visual mental health support for all the students. The funding will also contribute towards the development of the student area in the Inclusion Hub for higher need SEND students. Ferndown Middle School are creating a Tranquillity Garden and their award will contribute towards the ground works and planting. The idea is to make a quiet, peaceful space for children to reflect at break and lunchtimes. The space we also be used for counselling and well-being activities to support children’s mental health. The funding will support the construction of an outdoor performance stage at Beaucroft Foundation School. It will provide a performance space for students informally at playtime, and more formally for the legendary Beaucroft talent shows. A space for outside learning and play with many benefits for the whole school community. At Ferndown First School the School Council put together their bid for funding for a Play Trail and were very busy gathering ideas and researching equipment. They will use their award to pay for the centre piece climbing frame. The importance of outside play in early years can’t be underestimated and is invaluable for a child’s development.

In addition to this the funding will be used to support an enclosure for a small farm area.At Hampreston First School an IT Suite will be converted to a Reading Room with help from the JTYAF. The new space will not only provide a rich literacy experience but also a quiet area suitable for the nurturing work necessary for children with anxiety and mental health issues. The JTYAF was set up in 2008 in memory of John Thornton who was killed in Afghanistan. John’s legacy lives on making a real difference to the lives of local young people. In the last 14 years scholarships and bursaries of almost £850,000 have been awarded to over 2200 young people, encouraging and inspiring them to ‘climb as high as they can dream.’ Pete Thornton Chair of the JTYAF commented. “We continue to be humbled by the support that John’s Foundation receives. Any charity is the sum of its supporters, and we are so grateful to everyone whose generosity has helped the JTYAF to continue to do its great work with young people. The pandemic has disrupted the life of every child in our community and for many this has significantly impacted their mental health. This year’s special Jubilee Fund is providing vital support with these exciting projects and will touch the lives of many children in our community. We feel it’s a fitting way to pay tribute to our Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year.

The Mention of Reinvention Daniel Radcliﬀe’s ability to embrace new projects across multiple mediums is no less admirable than his willingness to reference the past, and a certain wizard who just won’t go away. Change and reinvention for Daniel Radcliffe has never been in doubt. Of course, the 32-year-old, to some, will always be Harry Potter, no matter how much the genre changes or the boyish good looks lessen. “I learned a long time ago you can’t keep going back to the well,” he admits. “Harry Potter was great but, you know, I was a kid, and I’m deﬁnitely not that kid now. “Of course I will always be grateful, and I know to a certain generation they would love me to stay that character forever, but for my own sanity I had to reinvent as far away from that

as I could, and I feel I have done that. “And besides, what film does is immortalises people in that moment… so I will always be there, in one sense.” Since the final Potter film screened in 2011, Radcliffe has extended his range with a series of daring performances in horror films (The Woman in Black and Victor Frankenstein), dramas (Kill Your Darlings and The Gamechangers), and edgy comedies (Horns and Swiss Army Man). seemed as though Radcliffe, who is in a long-term relationship with actress Erin Darke, was going to head the way of emotive, intellectual independent movies. After all, that would match the headspace he occupied as a kid growing up writing and poetry – two things he loves. “I think my love of words comes from having grown up surrounded by books, scripts, and plays. My father was an agent whose clients were writers and directors and there were always stacks of books lying around the house. “I didn’t read that much when I was a child but suddenly around the age of 14, I began to devour everything, especially books on history. I still read a lot although now it’s mainly nonﬁction. Reading and writing are great passions of mine and I think that has helped me in terms of choosing scripts. “Ultimately, whatever it is – TV, ﬁlm, stage – I know what makes me tick and I look forward to the next job, and making the best of that experience.”

Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay to visit Bournemouth and Poole The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will visit our iconic coastal towns during its journey through England this summer as the full route is revealed. Birmingham 2022 is hosting the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – a journey which brings together and celebrates communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games. The Queen’s Baton Relay is set to travel the length and breadth of England for a total of 29 days, before culminating at the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on 28 July 2022. Kicking off on Thursday 2 June, the Baton will spend four days in London, coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend. The Baton will then resume the international journey before returning to England to commence a 25-day tour of the regions providing the opportunity for communities to experience the excitement of Birmingham 2022, as the 11 days of showstopping sport nears ever closer. On Monday 4 July Poole and Bournemouth will officially welcome the Baton as it continues its journey along the promenade from Poole into Bournemouth. Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Vibrant Places said: “It is a real privilege to be a part of this tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games and we are excited that Poole and Bournemouth have been selected to play a key part in the Queen’s Baton Relay through the South West this summer. We are looking forward to watching the Baton as it makes its way along the promenade of our stunning coastline. It’s a perfect location to join in the excitement and to cheer on our marvellous Batonbearers and an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience

the buzz of Birmingham 2022 right on our own doorstep.” Thousands of Batonbearers, each with inspiring backgrounds and stories, will have the honour of carrying the Baton during the journey through England, including those nominated in recognition of their contributions to their local community, whether that be in sport, education, the arts, culture or charity. Between 40 and 130 Batonbearers will carry the Baton each day, and the Relay will reach hundreds of villages, towns and cities during its tour of the country. Since its inaugural appearance at the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton Relay has been a tradition for the Commonwealth Games. The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay began at Buckingham Palace on 7 October 2021, when The Queen placed Her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton and passed it to four-time Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox, who had the honour of being the first of thousands of Batonbearers to carry the Baton. Since then, the Baton has visited Commonwealth nations and territories in Europe, Africa, Oceania. It still has further destinations in the Caribbean, the Americas, and more countries in Europe, including the Home Nations consisting of five days in Scotland, four in Northern Ireland and five in Wales, where it will finish on Sunday 3 July, before returning to England in summer for the final countdown to the Commonwealth Games. Jennie Bond A portrait of the Queen, by revered royal correspondent, Jennie Bond. Jennie Bond worked as Royal Correspondent for the BBC throughout the Nineties, covering some of the happiest, most tragic and scandalous moments that have befallen the family in recent times. “At the heart of it, I am fan of royalty and a fan of the family unit,” she says. “The trials that the Royal Family have been through are really no different to our own, and that should reassure them as well as us. They are human beings, and fate doesn’t shine brighter on them, because the everyday gains and losses that are just part of being alive. “Ultimately, it is how you come back from the challenges that really matters – and the Queen has, over the past seven decades, truly shown herself to be the most resilient person possible.” Bond is certainly relieved our Head of State has styled and

positioned herself with such a brand of quiet authority. “You could arguably look at almost everyone around the Queen and pick out faults and failings,” she says. “We’ve seen so many in recent years, to the extent we don’t need to name the culprits or the dealings. “Yet when you shine that light on the Queen it’s really difﬁcult, at any point, to say, ‘you got that wrong’, or ‘this could have been done better’. “I think with Elizabeth we tend to take that for granted – we tend to just accept she is like that without contemplating what sort of royal landscape we would have with someone less capable at the helm.” As far as privacy goes, the

Queen values it, but respects the need to be visible and approachable. “Elizabeth is funny, charismatic, sharp as anything, but I think worn down at times by the sheer weight of what it is she has to do. It’s no easy task for someone in their nineties and no amount of wealth or privilege will compensate for what is an incredible commitment to her people,” says Bond. “I have had the honour of covering a lot of royal moments of great importance… moments in history I suppose – Princess Diana’s death, the Queen Mother’s death, the divorce of Charles and Diana. All those were very important moments I had to report on. But honestly, I think the jubilee celebrations and the pomp and pageantry is the most important. I know it signiﬁes a simple anniversary – just a date in the calendar – but more than that it’s a way of looking back over the continued efforts of someone so brave and inspiring, and is the perfect way to say ‘thank you’ to a very special lady.”

Dorset Wildlife Trust is inviting everyone to take part in the UK’s biggest nature challenge which kicks off on 1 June 2022 with the Big Wild Breakfast, the first of the ‘random acts of wildness’ designed to bring people across Dorset closer to nature every day in June. Across Dorset, there are so many opportunities to connect with nature from the beautiful Jurassic coast to chalk streams, forests, heaths and meadows. To mark the 30 Days Wild Weekend on Saturday 18 June, there will be a series of events at Dorset Wildlife Trust visitor centres including the opportunity to explore moths at the Kingcombe Visitor Centre or take part in the Brownsea Island early bird walk and breakfast. A survey of 2021 participants revealed that the pandemic positively affected their appreciation of the natural world, and that by connecting with nature, people were inspired to take action for the world around them: 20

• 78% of participants said the pandemic made them value nature more. • 88% said they were very likely to make their garden more wildlife-friendly after participating in 30 Days Wild, or had already done so. • 74% said they had either already taken action to reduce their carbon footprint or were very likely to after taking part in 30 Days Wild. The Queen’s Jubilee: Platinum Pomp The work that goes on behind the scenes to mark Jubilee celebrations. Soldiers, horses and musicians It all starts to come to fruition on the Thursday, as Trooping the Colour marks the Queen’s birthday celebrations. Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will come together in the traditional Parade. This is the first Jubilee celebration in which women will be included in the regiment, so additional preparations have been made to ensure the influx of first-time participants. RAF fly-past The traditional RAF fly-past completes the parade. The routine will have been practised countless times, though contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a privilege reserved for the Queen. In the lead-up to the event, local communities have been invited to apply for their own fly-pasts. Jubilee beacons A fortnight before the Jubilee, 1,500 Platinum Jubilee beacons will have been distributed across the UK. This lighting

of beacons first took place in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and are a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents. St Paul’s Cathedral On Friday, June 3rd, attention switches to the Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Public safety elements come to the fore here, with tens of thousands of well-wishers lining the streets around the Thames as the Queen and family members attend. The Derby A day of leisure follows on the Saturday as the Queen visits The Derby at Epsom Downs. Named The Big Lunch and launched in 2009, communities have been planning for months how they wish to mark the special day, with up over 1,500 applications made. 200 silk scarfs At the same time, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant sees artistic performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers tell the story of the Queen’s 70-year reign. Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at haggling, and discusses whether it’s a dying art into which we need to breathe new life. We have a real aversion to haggling in this country – in fact, I would say we are some of the world’s worst hagglers. We’ve lost the bravado and conﬁdence we once had to cut a deal, yet if you master haggling, and it is an artform, it’s fun and actually adds a layer of enjoyment to the process of buying and selling. Most people encounter haggling when it comes to their utilities and other service providers, and in simple terms, if you don’t haggle when it comes to renewing your broadband or TV package or mobile contract or car insurance or whatever it is, you are simply costing yourself money that could translate to a meal, or a deposit for a car, or a holiday. The ﬁrst part of haggling where utilities are concerned is to get on price comparison sites in order to get a benchmark of what is available elsewhere, because that’s your target. Usually these best offers will be

in the form of ‘new customer’ initiatives, though as an existing customer who has already paid into the pot, why the hell should you not be qualifying for the same deals. At the end of the day, a lot of haggling comes down to being honest, forceful and conﬁdent, but also charming and friendly. Explain your budget, explain the better deal being offered by another provider, or by your own provider to new customers, and make it clear you will leave unless something changes. Of course, many of us know

those best deals come when, as an existing customer, you get put through to disconnections – it’s the point at which your provider is really just one step away from losing you for good, and it is those customer service agents who have the ability to get you a much better price. Ultimately, it is your negotiation here that will count, but if you don’t get the deal you think you deserve, my advice is to walk away. If you can negotiate a new deal, don’t get caught on a long agreement, and do remember to phone back to renegotiate again when any promotional period ends. Mostly, be charming, friendly and forceful, and enjoy the process of haggling!

Planetary Parade

Late in June there is a rare opportunity for those of you with modest-sized telescopes to potentially see a ‘Planetary Parade’ (with the added bonus of the Moon and Pluto!), as around the 26th, with the help of sky maps freely available in magazines or the internet, it is possible to locate all well-known objects in the Solar System around 3.30am (see ﬁgure). Be mindful that dawn advances quickly at this time of year, so ensure you know the time of sunrise in your area and never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or optical aids. For those of you without telescopes, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible in a line all month in our early morning skies.

Midsummer, or the Summer Solstice (from the Latin for ‘the sun stands still’) occurs on June 21st. For the northern hemisphere, it marks the day when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon (GMT). We experience this as the ‘longest day’ of the year (the longest amount of daylight and the shortest night). The early summer months are the best time to try and spot a rare and beautiful cloud-type: noctilucent clouds. If conditions are favourable, these blue-white illuminated clouds are visible thirty minutes after sunset for a couple of hours, in our northern skies. Although the exact cause of their formation is unknown, we know they are composed of tiny water ice crystals and form about 80km up in the atmosphere. Although June itself isn’t well-known for any major meteor showers, in 2014 the UN officially named June 30th as Asteroid Day. This day was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the Tunguska Event that took place in Siberia in 1908. Asteroid Day aims to raise awareness about asteroids, and if you want to find out more head to the official webpage at asteroidday.org.

Get out! Get out! Get out! Yes, you – I’m telling you to get up, put your shoes on, open the door and immerse yourself in what a wonderful country and wonderful landscape this is. Even after my 70-plus years here, I am proud and passionate and loyal to the UK, and I could never live anywhere else; and while those emotions hold ﬁrm all year round, in my mind there is never a better time to soak up the majesty of nature than now, with the sun out, the days growing longer, and nature unequivocally at her most resplendent. When I suggest getting outdoors in this way – and I suggest it a lot! – on some occasions I get the answer

In reality, it doesn’t matter. Of course I want our gardens to be at their most beautiful as regularly as they can, but these spaces are as much about what they give us, as they are what we give them. So while our own lawns and beds and trellises are often a priority, in these early days of summer I would encourage you to take the opportunity to sample those of others… in the wild, at a country house, even at a neighbour’s. They say imitation is the sincerest form of ﬂattery, so get out there, get imitating, and get inspired. And by the way, take your kids… every time. Get them off their consoles, prise them away from social media – it’s really good for

them to see this whole other side of things. It’s funny, the three big things government are always ranting on about are law and order, health, and education. That’s fair enough. And yet, time outdoors, time gardening, gives us all of them. If you’re letting off steam, you’re less likely to use your anger in a place where it wouldn’t be suitable. If you’re out there, you’re learning about how things grow, so that’s the education element. And the health part is obvious fresh air, exercise, open spaces gardens, parks, woodland, moorland. I know it sounds terribly tribe, but I do think if some of these world leaders just went out and pottered about in their garden for an hour every Saturday letting off steam, the world just might be a better place! So, please… get out!

Understanding Investments: Pension Options at and during Retirement Retirement can be both exciting and scary and is certainly a huge decision. Understanding the effect of inflation on your future expenditure throughout retirement (at an average 3% inflation your expenditure will double over 24 years) along with other significant capital requirements needs more than a “finger in the air” analysis. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, we utilize cash-flow planning tools to help clients understand whether retirement is affordable and just as importantly, sustainable. Once affordability has been identified, decisions on the most effective way to generate retirement income can be made. There are more choices than you might think! Retirement Income is divided into secure income and flexible income. Secure income would include Defined Benefit Pension Schemes, the State Pension and Pension Annuities. Flexible income includes Pension Drawdown and income from capital and investments, with rental income classed between the two, as it is secure but can be subject to void periods. You can currently access your defined contribution pension savings any time after age 55 although the minimum age is increasing to 57 in 2028 and will remain 10 years below state pension age thereafter. You have five broad choices and for each option, 25% of your pension savings can be paid tax-free: 1. Secure Income-Annuity Exchange your pension savings for an annuity provided by an insurance company which is then guaranteed for the rest of your life (with options including a dependent’s annuity). Annuity income is subject to income tax. 2. Secure Income-Temporary Annuity Little known but can be very attractive for those who want to retire early. Can provide a higher guaranteed income for a specific number of years (perhaps until other pensions such as the State Pension

commence) to allow the balance of pension funds Howard Goodship to remain invested. Annuity income is subject to income tax. 3. Flexi-Access Drawdown Take the income you need when you need it. The money remains invested, and you draw a variable level of income for as long as your money lasts. Withdrawals are subject to income tax. 4. Cash Payment Have all your savings paid as a cash lump sum, with 75% of the fund subject to income tax. 5. Leave it for now There is no requirement to draw your savings from your pension and the fund can be passed down to a nominated beneficiary (and through different generations), often outside of your estate and therefore exempt from Inheritance Tax. The 25% tax free lump sum is lost if not taken during lifetime, but your funds can be paid tax-free on death before 75 (taxable on death after 75). As you can see, there are significant choices available and pension savings are another tax advantageous wrapper to consider alongside other tax efficient products including ISAs. Diverse Abilities celebrates one year of STARs This week, Diverse Abilities celebrates one year of its STARs service, supporting SEN siblings with play sessions, advice, support, and most importantly gives them the chance to just be kids. Due to a gap in provision for siblings, Diverse Abilities launched STARs in 2021 following the mental health impact of the pandemic to help the Supportive, Thoughtful, And Resilient children and young people. Over the last year, STARs has delivered 640 hours of support to 19 children. They have enjoyed a range of sessions including arts and crafts, cooking, trips to the cinema, mini golf and playing at the park, all with a chance to develop essential life and social skills. The children have also enjoyed day trips including Chessington World of Adventures, Adventure Pirate, and Insanity Gaming Arcade. The children supported, all aged between eight and 16, have said: “Coming to STARs help me with my confidence.” “It gives me time away from my sister and is something I can do on my own.” “I get to make new friends who understand me.” Matilda, one of the children who attends STARs, was anxious to begin with, but the team were able to ease this anxiety and had regular chats to make her feel more comfortable on arrival and explain that it was great to have her as part of the group 46

and important for her to attend, even if it was difficult. She commented: “I will keep coming because I like it here, it’s my time to be listened to, STARs is safe, fun and friendly.” Matilda’s Mum added: “I am really relieved that there was finally a special place for siblings, I have been looking for years. It’s life-changing for Matilda. She has a lovely bond with some of the adults and the support she needed was there for her. School commented that she would practically bounce into school the morning after her STARs session. For the first time, Matilda had something special to be part of, where her thoughts and feelings where recognised and supported.”

Tutankhamun at 100 It’s a century since Howard Carter discovered the lost tomb of the ancient Egyptian Pharoah, Tutankhamun. It was 100 years ago that the most famous Egyptian archaeological discovery of them all was made. When Egyptologist Howard Carter stumbled upon the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty Pharoah Tutankhamun, he opened the world up to a legacy that would still inspire and enchant people a century later. While it wasn’t until November of 1922 that archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the entrance to the 14th Century BC tomb, signiﬁcant planning for the trip had been made in the months preceding it.

His sponsor, the Earl of Carnarvon (also known as Lord Carnarvon) – who lived at Highclere Castle, the real-life ﬁlming location for Downton Abbey – was funding a third attempt at discovering the ultimate price, and the call came on November 4th that an entrance had been found.

Carter’s search for Tutankhamun had started in 1914, although work had been interrupted by the First World War. The premise was to investigate for tombs missed by other expeditions, and Carnarvon’s investment was left in for just long enough, although the legacy thereafter stretched out longer than anyone could have imagined. Over 5,000 items were recovered from the tomb, and cataloguing took a colossal 10 years to complete.

The Earl and his daughter, Lady Evelyn Herbert, made the journey from the UK, eventually arriving in Egypt 19 days later, so that they could savour the moment when full access was gained.

Sadly, Carnarvon was not around to see the full itemisation of such a majestical ﬁnd. He contracted blood poisoning while staying in Luxor and died on April 5th 1923.

In reality, the Earl was already in a severely weakened state when he contracted pneumonia. As for Carter, he lived for a further 17 years and died of lymphoma in 1939, at the age of 64.

A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the very ﬁrst and most basic element of any project, communication. I take it as a huge compliment when I see the Grand Designs format taken to foreign shores. In particular, our Grand Designs Abroad project, which is going back well over 15 years now, saw us working with ambitious homeowners in France, Italy and Spain in undertaking ventures to make their design dreams come true. What dawned on me is the fact that anything is possible when you are able to communicate a concept… clearly, concisely, properly. In reality, that’s no more difﬁcult to do in a foreign language than it is in English. After all, how often do we see home improvement shows here in the UK where the concept of what someone wants ends up a million miles from what they get?! It all comes down to interaction and being clear as far as what

we want and what we don’t want. I do believe in rural areas it’s a bit easier to harvest contacts and make a difference,

but wherever you are, city or countryside, the Loire Valley or London, ultimately what makes a difference is working on and solidifying personal relations. It’s about sitting down, being ﬁrm but polite, offering incentives and trying to get others investing in your project. Above all else, it’s about communicating. And that communication doesn’t end when you’ve had your house extension done; it should carry on over time. When we returned to France to catch up with some of our couples, it was great to see so

many of them fully integrated into their communities. Their contribution wasn’t just about adding to the local economy but learning the language and forming genuine friendships so that they could be really engaged with becoming part of that place. After all, a home is an entity not just in the context of what’s inside it, but what’s around it as well, and that’s always worth bearing in mind. People buy into people, and it’s amazing the extra lengths all of us will go to when we like, trust and believe in the people who come to us for help and support. So as I said at the start, communication is the ﬁrst step… and sometimes the biggest one you’ll make, as well, so get it right!

MOT Madness The three simple ﬁxes you can do at home to give your car its best chance of making it through the MOT, ﬁrst time. 1. TYRES Tyres are often the most neglected element of our automotive upkeep – but the difference between decent treads and uncared-for tyres could be a matter of life and death. One of the foremost indicators that your tyre is ready to be changed is when it loses its tread depth. Maintaining this is important because loss of depth reduces grip and traction on the roads, and eventually compromises safety while driving. Keeping a tab on the tread wear indicator, which is built into the tyre, is a good way to measure the tread depth. Also be wary of cracks appearing on the sidewall as the oils and chemicals in the rubber compound degrade. Over time, the rubber loses its tightness and splits begin to appear. At worst, this could result in a blowout, which is a

highly dangerous scenario. Finally check for lumps of rubber separated from the tyre. These generally occur when wheels bump kerbs. A small tear is driveable, but anything bigger, particularly when the gauze is visible underneath, means an immediate change is required. The good news for those requiring new tyres is that there are a range of tyre price comparison websites, including mobile tyre-ﬁtting services where your car needs to not even leave the driveway. 2. WIPERS AND JETS When you think about it, your wiper blades go through quite a bit. There’s rain, snow, mud, grit, not to mention full-on, head-on wind resistance, and a whole lot more besides. For basic maintenance, you should clean off your wiper blades every couple of months. Removing residual dirt will keep the rubber in better shape for longer, eliminating the need for regular replacement. If the wiper blade does need to be changed,

most automotive centres will do this for you and at no extra cost. Keep a check as well on blocked washer jets. These can be cleaned out by delving under the bonnet, releasing the supply pipe and washing through. If access is tricky, you may be able to move any organic matter stuck in the pipe by removing the jets and soaking them in a bowl of vinegar. 3. LIGHTS Where headlamps and brake lights are concerned, these are another easy check and easy ﬁx scenario, and will offer you perhaps the biggest saving of all. Bulbs can be purchased online for a fraction of the cost that might be charged at the MOT centre, and in most cases the light unit can be taken apart and the new lamp installed. In bigger vehicles you may ﬁnd the unit less accessible, although online tutorials are always available to guide amateur mechanics through the task!

The Positive Environment Cutting through the negativity to celebrate the successes of green and eco measures that are being played out across the globe. Virtual conferences are the future A devastating statistic emerged last year which showed the global conference industry produced as much greenhouse gas emissions each year – in the process of attendees travelling to and from it – as the entirety of the United States. Covid has made our acceptance of virtual conferences straightforward, as well as providing a cheaper and more convenient alternative; and the positive environmental impact is understandably huge. Indeed, according to the 2021 IPCC report, we have around nine years before the planet exceeds the 1.5°C global warming limit; yet moving conferences online could extend that deadline by around 18 months. UN Plastic Pollution Treaty It’s been hailed the most significant environmental deal since the Paris accord, but this spring, the United Nations Environment Agency announced a plan to create the first Global Plastic Pollution Treaty. Never before has a legally binding pact brought together all four corners of the globe in a shared eco revolution designed to tackle the scourge of plastic; and while the plan

isn’t expected to be finalised until 2024, the ripple effect on businesses, economies and, ultimately, planet Earth, is expected to be huge. Motoring classic is stolen! The owner of a classic car is appealling for the public’s help after it was stolen from the driveway of his Poole home. A police investigation is ongoing after the two-door bronze-coloured Ford Escort Mk1 was taken overnight from outside the property in Mossley Avenue, Wallisdown. The car theft took place sometime between midnight and 5am on Tuesday, April 12th 2022. The vehicle owner’s appeal goes out to anyone, including taxi drivers, who may have recorded dash cam footage of the car being transported during the early hours of April 12th 2022.

Paul Hollywood’s Authentic Cornish Pasty Introduction A Cornish pasty is one of those things we almost always buy, yet in baking terms the concept is really very simple. After all, this was a homebaking staple for the tin miners of Cornwall, with its thick crust ready to be disposed of, so ensuring dirty hands wouldn’t contaminate the meat. Delicious, wholesome, and able to be added to vegetables or salad to form a main meal, the pasty really is one of my favourites.

Ingredients (serves 5) For the pastry • 450g plain flour • salt • 115g cold lard, diced • 75g cold unsalted butter, diced • About 90ml ice-cold water • 1 egg, lightly beaten, to glaze For the filling • 1 large onion • 120g swede • 1 large floury potato, such as King Edward or Maris Piper • 400g beef skirt • 50g butter • Salt and pepper to season

Method

1. To make the pastry, mix the ﬂour and salt in a large bowl, add the lard and butter and rub in with your ﬁngertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in enough

water to make a fairly firm dough, then knead briefly until smooth. Shape into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes. 2. Now move on to the filling, slicing the onion finely to start. Cut the swede and potato into small, thin strips; keep each separate. Cut the beef into small, thin pieces and divide into five portions. 3. Heat the oven to 200°C/Gas mark 6. Divide the pastry into five equal pieces. Roll each out on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm thickness and cut out a 24cm circle, using a plate as a guide. 4. Scatter a scant layer of swede on the pastry semicircle, leaving a 1cm border. Add a similar layer of potato, season lightly and top with

some onion. Repeat the swede and potato layers, seasoning as you go. Check the pasty will close, then add the beef. Add a final layer of onion, season and dot with butter. 5. Brush the pastry border with a little beaten egg, then close the lid of the pasty, making sure that the edges meet. Press together firmly and then crimp the edges together by pinching all the way round between your thumb and forefinger. 6. Fill and seal the remaining circles of pastry in the same way. Place the pasties on two baking trays and cut two small slits in the middle of each one. Brush the pastry with beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven setting to 160°C/Gas mark 3 and bake for 30 minutes longer.
