Royalty Revered Celebrating 150 years since the opening of the Royal Albert Hall. It’s somewhat unfair that a landmark anniversary of the Royal Albert Hall’s long legacy won’t be celebrated on the exact date. In fact, when David Arnold – he of Bond, Independence Day and Sherlock soundtrack fame – takes to the stage in mid-July, it will be over three months late, given the South Kensington venue first opened its doors on March 29th 1871. The spectacular dome, which measures 20,000ft, sits above an auditorium that boasts a capacity of 5,272 people and is, of course, named after Prince Albert, the husband of Victoria. When the Covid-delayed celebrations begin, the Royal Albert Hall, in 2021, benefits from incredible acoustics, stateof-the-art sound systems, impeccable lighting and firstclass stage technology, yet so many other parts of the original venue still remain untouched, and that’s what gives it its unique charm.

The venue was funded out of the proﬁts from London’s Great Exhibition. Now Grade I-listed, it cost £200,000 to construct and took four years to complete. The ﬁrst performance was by Charles Gounod on May 8th 1972, as his orchestra played Handel’s Messiah. In respect of that landmark event, Messiah has been played every Good Friday afternoon at the venue since. Electric lighting was introduced shortly after the hall opened, and over the years arts and science exhibitions have utilised the space, with more events actually held in the outer rooms – over 400 per year – than the main auditorium. Tradition has always been at the heart of things – there were Sunday concerts for six decades up to the end of the World War II, and the Proms has a permanent place in the hearts of traditional music devotees.

The hall was partially bombed by the Germans in 1942, while moves to cure the ‘Albert Hall echo’ were put in place in the 1960s, with acoustic diffusing discs being hung from the ceiling. A £40m refurbishment programme was undertaken in 1996 and these days the Royal Albert Hall continues to promote various education and outreach projects. It’s a charity in its own right, and even boasts a performance database that lists each of the artists who have appeared at an estimated 30,000 events since 1871. Attendees are treated to unobstructed viewing, some incredible VIP boxes, private rooms, and awe-inspiring auditorium, and a gallery around the perimeter that houses bar and restaurant space. What’s more, one special person, each night, will ﬁnd themselves with the unexpected privilege of sitting on seat 87, row 11, under the K stalls in the main auditorium. It is an unassuming seat, but one that rests on the foundation stone that was laid by Victoria way back in 1867.

Another month, another summer and halfway through 2021, could there be anywhere better to enjoy the season’s delights than in Dorset? From coastal paradises to an interesting connection to the French Royal Family, here is another handful of interesting and quirky facts from around Dorset to illustrate just how special our county is!

Dorset’s regal history is far from the county’s best kept secret however were you aware that surviving members of the French Royal Family were invited to Lulworth Castle during the carnage of the French Revolution. Among their number was the King of France, Charles X, to whom King George III was said to have gifted a large sum of money. Although their stay at Dorset’s grand castle was only for a brief time before the family PHOTO: NICK FEWINGS were to travel to Edinburgh, reportedly, upon catching sight of Lulworth Castle, King Charles X promptly burst into tears as its form reminded him of the French Bastille. Did you know that the rather romantically entitled Dancing Ledge, on the Isle of Purbeck, was once an important location for exporting Purbeck Stone? So called because at certain times the water’s edge covers the ledge giving it the appearance of dancing upon the water, Dancing Ledge was a popular location for many boats and ships. Interestingly one of its most renowned commissions was when Kent’s Ramsgate Harbour was under construction in the 18th and 19th centuries and this sturdy Dorset material, in hot demand, was taken directly from Dancing Ledge to Kent.

Today the word shrapnel is a common word in modern language however were you aware that shrapnel actually comes from a certain Colonel Henry Shrapnel who was a resident of the Manor House, Puncknowle for a period of time? The Colonel invented the weaponry as far back as 1784 and was recognised by the British Artillery several decades later in 1803, rising to commonplace usage in the first World War, causing countless injuries to soldiers. Home to some of the UK’s most expensive beach huts which are even more costly than three-bedroom houses, Hengistbury Head is one of Dorset’s prime locations for soaking up this coastal paradise. And no wonder! Just a stone’s throw away from Bournemouth and part of an area of Special Scientific Interest as well as a long list of other protective titles, this Dorset gem can also boast an extensive list of local flora and fauna with hundreds of varieties of plantlife and countless wildlife from rare insects like the thirteen-spotted ladybird to mammals and birds such as the purple heron!

Did you know that Dorset is home to one of the UK’s oldest breweries? Located in Bridport, Palmers Ale dates back to 1794 and has been brewing countless ales for thirsty Dorset locals for years. Remarkably, the brewery was purchased in the latter 19th century by two brothers by the name of Palmer and today their great grandsons today work at the brewers. As well as creating many ﬁne beverages from beer to whisky and gin to cider from local Dorset apples, the brewery’s history is itself a snapshot into the town’s heritage through the centuries and can be discovered in a tour hosted by Palmers.

Ramsay’s Revival Top chef Gordon Ramsay outlines the food trends we should look out for in 2021. It says a lot that in a Twitter post published on New Year’s Day, Gordon Ramsay decided to use the opportunity to tell the year 2020 to, well… let’s just say ‘not come back’. While the global Covid pandemic has turned a lot of us into accomplished, skilled, proﬁcient home cooks (in our own minds, at least, if not in reality), the effect it’s had on the chefs, staff and restaurateurs of the world’s best restaurants has been less positive. Most establishments have endured almost a year of closure – Ramsay’s portfolio of high-quality restaurants included. It’s a factor that has led to something of an accidental food revolution in our homes. “With every disaster there is an upside and a downside,” he says. “While a lot of industries have been torn apart by Covid, it has been the making of others – think about the way we buy stuff over the internet, and home delivery of goods. Think too about cleanliness and hygiene… things that have always been of interest to me as a chef – we’re now all obsessed with it.

“In the same way, the fact we’re not going to restaurants hasn’t meant we’ve stopped eating – instead, people are discovering and developing new ways to enjoy food at home. As someone passionate about food, I can only support that; even if it’s cost me millions!” he says, referencing

A new life for Parley Sports Club West Parley residents will be familiar with the building at 275 Christchurch Road, next to the Parish Council recreation ground and located behind the Memorial Hall. It has operated as a private members Sports Club since the end of the Second World War. The 30 acre site was purchased by public subscription in the 1950’s and includes Parley Wood, a SSSI that adjoins Parley Common. Exterior looks can be deceiving and in recent times it has not generated suﬃcient income to be well maintained and is in urgent need of costly repairs. The Parish Council took back possession of the building and rebranded it as West Parley Community Sports and Social Club. A planning application has been lodged to revamp the premises. The repairs are being costed and the Council is considering how to fund. More details are given on the Parish Council website www.westparley-pc.gov.uk. The Club has been home to Cricket and Football teams that have enjoyed much success over the years. Youth Football is thriving and Cricket are possibly on the brink of securing promotion to the Southern Premier League for next season. Cricket Club Chairman Mark

Barber states ‘Parley Cricket Club are delighted to work with the Parish Council to protect and enhance the facilities at West Parley Community Sports Club”. Pétanque is a recent addition to the facilities and the section is well supported. The intention is for the facility to be managed by the West Parley Community Amateur Sports and Social Club in which sports and social section representatives will contribute to the day to day management, along with Parish Councillors. The Parish Council have declared a longterm intention to protect the site for public use. Council Chairman Cllr. Philip Bamborough said ‘With the proposed 22% increase in new housing planned for the village, it is even more important there are open spaces for recreation. Improvement and protection of this site is vital. Talking about Wildlife...

The Underwater World Whether you’re one minute away from the beach or one hour, for many of us, living so close to the sea is one of the best things about living in Dorset. Already this year, our marine conservation team have been finding exciting and unusual things washed up on our beaches at low tide. The ‘furrowed crab’ was a great find with it being the first recording of this species for Kimmeridge. This crab is also a ‘climate change indicator species’ as we’re seeing them spread further north, in line with our seas warming up. Other seashore species which have been spreading eastwards into Dorset include the ‘toothed topshells’. These sea snails are common further west but have grown from none at all in the early 2000s to being a common find at Kimmeridge. The small cushion starfish has also become common at Kimmeridge since the first sighting in 2014, and the exoticlooking anemone shrimp that lives within the stinging tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, has also increased in number in recent years. Top three things to look for this summer on the coast: 1. Seahorses: There have been an unusual amount of seahorses washed up on beaches this year. This could be a good indicator that we have a healthy population in Dorset. Let us know if you find one! 2. Cushion starfish: In rockpools, the cushion star glides along on its myriad tiny tube-feet, as if sliding on ice. This small relative of star fish feeds by everting part of its stomach through its mouth to digest dead and decaying animals and seaweed. 3. Flat periwinkle: Look for the flat periwinkle in seaweedy pools. They range in colour from sunshine yellow, through burnt orange to chocolate brown and are easy to spot amongst the sea wrack fronds they graze on. The yellow shells are particularly easy to spot, looking like discarded sweetcorn kernels! Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, has launched its latest fundraising campaign encouraging people to ‘Do Your Own Thing’ to raise money for the vital services it provides. Do Your Own Thing is an opportunity for anyone to get involved in fundraising no matter their skills or abilities and the charity has a ‘wall of inspiration’ on its website as a starting point for ideas.

Pictures of fundraising can be shared with the hashtag #TeamDA. Naomi added: “We can’t wait to see everyone getting involved and watch the diﬀerent paths they’ve taken to raise money, our supporters have been instrumental to keeping us going over the last year – they’re a real innovative bunch and we can’t thank them enough!”

International Space Station There are only two possible dates to spot the ISS in June; the first and last day of the month. Unfortunately, both of these are unfavourable passes where the ISS will be quite low. If you want to try and catch either of these sightings, please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town. July will be a much better time to spot the space station, with sightings possible most evenings. Events The Summer Solstice (from the Latin for ‘the sun stands still’) occurs on June 21st this year, and marks the day when summer officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere. On this day the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon. This means we experience the ‘longest’ day of the year (the day with the most hours of daylight, and least hours of darkness). Partial Solar Eclipse If the sky is clear, residents in southern England will be treated to a partial eclipse of the Sun on the morning of June 10th. The maximum takes place around 11.10am depending on your location, at which point the Moon will cover roughly 20% of the Sun. The actual path of totality is visible from Canada, the North Pole and Eastern Siberia. The eclipse begins at roughly 10am and continues to around 12.30pm. Various websites, including www.timeanddate.com can provide up-to-date information for your specific location. There are several ways to view the eclipse safely, including the use of designated eclipse safety glasses, or making your own pinhole projector camera from a couple of pieces of cardboard. There are many websites available that show you how to construct one safely.

Named by Native American tribes, it is associated with the time of year when strawberries ripen and are ready to pick. In Europe and other countries, June’s full moon is known by many names, including the Rose Moon, Mead Moon and Hot Moon. Object of the Month The summer months are the best time to try and spot a rare and beautiful cloud-type: noctilucent clouds (from the Latin for ‘night shining’). If conditions are favourable, these blue-white illuminated clouds are visible thirty minutes after sunset for a couple of hours in our northern skies. West Moors Middle School’s Gardening Project

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) was delighted to help West Moors Middle School to buy a polytunnel for their exciting Gardening Project. The recent opening ceremony gave the students the opportunity to thank the JTYAF and the Ferndown and Parley Rotary Club who also helped to make this project possible by funding the raised beds. The children were clearly excited to see the launch of this fabulous initiative and eager to promote the benefits that this project would bring to their school. They presented a wonderful poem, ‘The Little Plant’ by Kate L. Brown, and then the Year 7 students expressed their feelings about the project in their own words. “This week it is National Mental Health Awareness week with the focus on the importance of connecting with nature. There are so many health benefits associated with gardening and being outdoors! We feel incredibly lucky to have this wonderful opportunity for all of us to share and benefit.” A quote from Amy. “The polytunnel and raised beds help us to focus on the gardening tasks whether it’s potting, weeding, pruning, watering, harvesting or chopping, rather than worry about the pandemic or spend too long on technology. This project will help us to ‘live in the moment’, respect nature and our environment, and not take so many things for granted. You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” From Sarah. 32

Swarm season is upon us original nest the bees will have eaten a lot of honey which keeps them calm and peaceful. So whilst a huge group of them together may look rather threatening, they will not do any harm. For beekeepers it’s a very busy time right now because we are in swarm season. A colony of bees will naturally swarm when the hive becomes overcrowded and the Queen Bee (together with several thousand workers) decides to find a new home. This can happen any time between the end of March and the end of July, normally on a warm, sunny day between 11am – 4pm. A swarm temporarily settles on a branch of a tree or in a bush or sometimes on a wall or a fence within 50 to 100 metres of its original nest. It then stays there until scouting bees have found a new nest site (usually a hole in a tree). The swarm will then fly directly to the new nest site and make a new home. Swarms are normally noticed when they are hanging in a tree or bush. A swarm looks like a large teardrop varying in size from a rugby ball to something 2-3 times that size (see the photo to the left). Generally bees in a swarm are not aggressive. Understanding Investments: What can you expect from us?

There are no words that do justice in describing the past 15 months living in the midst of a pandemic world. The human cost has been tragic on many levels and will never be forgotten. Generally human kindness has shone through but can the same be said from businesses? Going forward, what can businesses learn and what should you expect from them? But I have also been very frustrated by businesses who seem to have forgotten the importance of their clients be it delaying refund money, poor service or now increasing prices beyond what is reasonable-fundamentally taking advantage of their customers. We never forget that and are on your side! 2. Local, accessible office. The pandemic has shown that we can deliver our service remotely when necessary, and it works. The Adventures of Daichi

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Fish. Daichi loves to go fishing with Grandad… and Grandad loves to go fishing with the family. What better way to celebrate his 86th Birthday, than on the banks of an idyllic pond with all of us together in wonderful sunshine! So, that is just what we did in May. Todber Manor is where we all met. Beautiful lakes situated in East Dorset just ten minutes from the quaint town of Shaftesbury. Dad is in his element here. My sister moved into the cottage attached to a farm where her husband grew up, in Margaret Marsh, and this is even closer at just seven minutes away. The scenery around here is stunning. Miles of rolling countryside, wildlife and glorious green land with blue sky and feather-like white clouds. It was a real treat. To be honest, I have always enjoyed fishing with Dad. Many, many Sundays were spent on the banks of a local pond up North. I love the serenity, the birds singing, the picnic and the family togetherness that we have all missed so much recently. Here we were,

Daichi... and friends out in fresh air and in great company. The fish here are huge. Some fishermen stay in bivvies (tents) overnight to fish for the real big carp. Can you imagine sitting outside in all weathers holding your rod (now now…) waiting for that all-important bite and then using all your strength for possibly half an hour or so to land a 40 pound + carp? It is a complete buzz for these guys, a real excitement for those that ‘get the bug’. Better than being 24/7 on a computer I would say. Well, we were not quite up for that, though Daichi would have been very happy to put us up for the night! We must plan our next ‘staycation’ and get the awning out again. We have really missed that, and so has Daichi. The fishing at Todber Manor is excellent. With ten ponds in total I believe, there are lots to choose from. In addition to that there are holiday lets which were currently closed due to the situation, but I am sure they will open soon, if not already. It is a really great location for anyone who likes fishing or even if you

would like a break away. The well-stocked fishing tackle shop caters for all needs too. Now, every time we go fishing with Grandad, we (well actually Stephen, Hayden and Dad) catch many fish. It looks easy, yet I am not sure why, but any time we have tried this without Grandad we don’t catch anything… just a cold. Funny that, it must be the better weather on the days we go with Grandad… mmm not sure about that. Grandad has fished all his life and his expertise absolutely makes it look easy. He has a real knack for the game. This time I did some fishing myself and caught a rather nice Mirror Carp. I can fish, but leave it to the boys while my sister and Mum have a chat on the side-lines. Oh yes and take never ending photographs and videos! It is hard work when they are catching lots of fish I have to keep getting up from my comfy, relaxed seat with my all-important coffee in hand. Really! This trip we were lucky enough to spot an egret that gracefully flew in and sat patiently on a small island in the centre of the pond. Delightful to see… and another photo was needed… Up again… We have to laugh don’t we.

The family... and the cake! Now Birthdays have to have cake and food (any excuse) and today was no exception. There is the delicious “Lakeside Diner” right here at the ponds! Perfect. It is an outside eatery with seating and the food is good! Us girls had steak, Hayden had pulled pork, Stephen had a burger and dad had fish and chips (of course!). Susan had also brought a cake and Dad’s highlight, which he said he will never forget, was us all singing Happy Birthday to him with the candles aglow, the sun setting, surrounded by his favourite ponds here in the South. Very special. I am not sure the other fishermen thought the same and the birds may well have wondered what all that screeching was about, but hey hum, we had a fabulous time. So - many ‘caught fish’ later, well fed, hoarse from singing, and aching from all that getting up and down out of the chair, it was time to say goodbye. Daichi was delighted with the trip. He, and Grandad, grinned from headlight to headlight all the way home. Happy Birthday Dad. With more areas and activities opening up, and a sunny summer (we can but hope) to look forward to, I wonder where Daichi will take us next? By Debbie Corney

h lt a e H & wellbeing Why getting your head down may be the best thing you can do for your health and wellbeing. Sleep: the science We all know how valuable a good night’s sleep is… or rather, how bad we feel when we don’t get one! The value of rest is recognisable in the fact we spend a third of our lives in bed. And sure enough, most of us can reel off a good number of the benefits of sleep – sharpness, mood enhancement, the fending off of low moods, a lowering of blood pressure, better immunisation, improved memory, stress reduction and even maintaining of body weight.

The environment First, consider what’s around you. Studies have shown that smartphones and device usage is on the increase and it’s the ‘blue light’ 50

emissions from these that can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, as well as resetting the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm). Moving away from screens earlier – scientists recommend at least an hour before you plan on going to sleep – will limit the bouts of LCD exposure which excite brain stimulators, therefore helping you maximise sleep efficiency. Remember as well the need to moderate room temperature, as well dimming lighting and removing excess noise around you. And while the act of sleeping is more important than anything you may consume in the lead-up to it, it goes without saying there are certain food and drink items that will hamper effective rest. While alcohol may enable you to drop off quicker, it’s disruptive to your sleep in the second half of the night, not least if you are in a state of dehydration. Consider as well the impact sugar, carbonated drinks and caffeine might have on the body at a time when it is trying to wind down. An old favourites such as Horlicks, with a soothing malt content, has been scientifically proven to aid rest. The routine… and a plan Scientific studies have shown that regularity and repetition is the important where sleep is concerned. Your body feeds off continuity and structure in its waking hours, so why should things be any different when it comes to sleep? Sleep doctors have begun recommending a trial week of ‘regular as clockwork’ bedtimes, with long rests and the adoption of healthy habits. They then invite people to see if they feel improved in all those physical and psychological aspects. In many cases, the results have gone to show why getting your head down may be the best thing you can do not just for your health and wellbeing, but your sanity too.

Creamy Courgette Sausage Penne Introduction

Simple and ﬂavoursome with a generous serving of veg, this is one of those weeknight meals ideal for when you want to feel satisﬁed but also a little virtuous.

Ingredients (serves four) • 6 Cumberland sausages • 400g penne pasta • 3 cloves of garlic (crushed or diced) • 1 red onion (peeled and sliced) • 1 large courgette (grated) • 250ml crème fraiche • 1 tbsp dried chilli ﬂakes • 60g grated parmesan or other hard Italian cheese • Handful of chopped fresh parsley

Method 1. While waiting for a large pot of water to boil, prepare the sausages by squeezing the meat gently from their casings - discard the skin. Heat a widebased pan with a tablespoon of oil and at a medium to hot heat add the sausage meat and cook until browned (6-7 minutes) breaking the meat up with a wooden spoon as you go. Remove and set aside the cooked sausage meat. 2. Put the pasta in the boiling water. Next, lower the heat to medium on your nowempty frying pan before gently sautéing the garlic and chilli ﬂakes - add more oil if necessary. After one minute, add the red onion and grated courgette, frying till softened.

3. Return your sausage meat to the pan with your onion and courgette, along with the crème fraiche and two thirds of the grated cheese. Next add your drained pasta along with a splash of the pasta water and simmer for two minutes until everything is combined and your sauce becomes silky and rich. Serve your pasta in bowls and garnish with your remaining cheese and the chopped parsley.

Top Tips • For perfect pasta always use a generous-sized pot, salt your water (it should almost be as salty as seawater) and avoid overcooking – al dente is the authentic Italian way! • Pasta is endlessly versatile, so feel free to riff on the ingredients to suit your taste… swap cream cheese for crème fraiche, red onion for white onion and courgette for any vegetable you fancy, from

chopped kale to tenderstem broccoli, or even Borlotti beans. • For the ultimate weeknight ease, stock up your pantry and freezer with a few handy cheats: garlic puree is the perfect way to get ﬂavour over fuss; frozen peas are delicious when added to this kind of pasta and an abundant spice rack is invaluable when it comes to last-minute ﬂavouring.
