We are coming to my favourite time of year, the summer. I love nothing better than to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee listening to our beautiful English bird songs. It is also great to be able to go out and see new places, Debbie & Stephen Corney visit friends and enjoy some with our son, Hayden space, whether it is by our amazing coastline with some of the best beaches in England, the New Forest in all its splendor and magnificent wildlife or in the countryside, we have it all here on our doorstep.

We live such busy, hectic lives, it is good to balance it with some time out and good company.

Holmans Donate State-of-the-art Television to Forest Holme Hospice Holmans, a home appliance shop based in Wimborne & Ferndown, have donated a brand-new 65-inch Panasonic television worth £1499 to Forest Holme Hospice, Poole. As part of their community and charity engagement, Holmans have recently run a competition which saw Forest Holme Hospice receive one of Holmans’ latest 65-inch Panasonic televisions. Holmans encouraged local groups, organisations, clubs and charities to apply to win the television – specifying why they would benefit from the free TV. After carefully reviewing all of the organisations that applied, the Holmans team decided to donate the television to Forest Holme Hospice in Poole. Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. The hospice has a team of specialist doctors, nurses, counsellors and care teams who provide support for adults and their families in a variety of settings.

Charlie James, Fundraiser at Forest Holme Hospice, said: “We’re very grateful to Holmans for this generous donation. I’m sure the patients will appreciate having a new television to watch films and TV series on – especially on such a big HD screen!” Michael Gray of Holmans, said: “Forest Holme Hospice was everyone’s favourite choice when deciding which charity the TV should be donated to and I’m glad to see it go to a good home. We hope it will bring happiness to the patients at Forest Holme.” As well as holding this competition for charity, Holmans also hold regular competitions for their customers to win the latest cameras, phones, audio equipment and home appliances for free, such as a Blomberg washing machine competition which was run as part of the recent Wimborne BID initiative, Discover Wimborne. Talking about Wildlife...

The Underwater World Whether you’re one minute away from the beach or one hour, for many of us, living so close to the sea is one of the best things about living in Dorset. Already this year, our marine conservation team have been finding exciting and unusual things washed up on our beaches at low tide. The ‘furrowed crab’ was a great find with it being the first recording of this species for Kimmeridge. This crab is also a ‘climate change indicator species’ as we’re seeing them spread further north, in line with our seas warming up. Other seashore species which have been spreading eastwards into Dorset include the ‘toothed topshells’. These sea snails are common further west but have grown from none at all in the early 2000s to being a common find at Kimmeridge. The small cushion starfish has also become common at Kimmeridge since the first sighting in 2014, and the exotic-looking anemone shrimp that lives within the stinging tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, has also increased in number in recent years. This year, World Oceans Day is celebrating our oceans, encouraging everyone to get out and explore their nearest coastline. You could take part in a 2-minute beach clean, try some rockpooling, or even see what rainbow colour wonders lie in the gardens beneath the seas with DWT’s snorkel trail at Kimmeridge. Seahorses: There have been an unusual amount of seahorses washed up on beaches this year. This could be a good indicator that we have a healthy population in Dorset. Let us know if you find one! 2. Cushion starfish: In rockpools, the cushion star glides along on its myriad tiny tube-feet, as if sliding on ice. This small relative of star fish feeds by everting part of its stomach through its mouth to digest dead and decaying animals and seaweed. 3. Flat periwinkle: Look for the flat periwinkle in seaweedy pools. They range in colour from sunshine yellow, through burnt orange to chocolate brown and are easy to spot amongst the sea wrack fronds they graze on. The yellow shells are particularly easy to spot, looking like discarded sweetcorn kernels! By Sally Welbourn

Experimental midsummer music in glorious Knoll Gardens Fans of experimental music have a rare opportunity to hear In C by Terry Riley, one of the greatest living minimalist composers, in the glorious surroundings of Knoll Gardens in Wimborne in June. Following their 2018 appearance at Knoll, Dorset-based musical ensemble Gerauschhersteller will return with a special midsummer outdoor performance of Riley’s acclaimed composition at 7.30pm on Friday 21 June. Riley composed In C in 1964 as 53 short repeated melodic and rhythmic cells in C major. How often each melody is repeated, or how coloured or intensified, is completely the choice of each individual player. Every version is different and the beauty of the piece lies in the variety of harmonic and rhythmic detail generated by these simple cells. Terry Riley was among the most revolutionary composers of the postwar era; famed for his introduction of repetition into Western music motifs, he also masterminded early experiments in tape loops and delay systems which left an indelible mark on the experimental music produced in his wake. Stuart Riddle, speaking on behalf of the group, said “In C uses very simple components, and some simple rules, to create a piece that is different and new each time someone plays it – it can be meditative, intense, or even funky. We are really honoured that Knoll Gardens have given us the opportunity to perform on the evening of the summer solstice and take this piece back to its

roots in 1960s counterculture and Terry Riley’s own all night performances” Gerauschhersteller’s new CD features highlights of their 2018 performance at Knoll. Tickets for this midsummer evening concert are £10 and gates open at 7pm. Audience members are encouraged to bring rugs, blankets and a picnic to best enjoy this innovative meditative 1960s experience in the garden. Lions quiz a great success! The Wimborne and Ferndown Lions annual spring quiz took place at the Allendale Centre on Friday 5th April. This year the quiz was a particular success with 130 players in 24 teams vying for the top prize. The club would like to give a big thank you to all

the quizzers (are you in the picture?) who combined to raise a healthy net profit of over £600 which will go to selected Lions charities. Ron Neave

What’s On 2019… Wimborne Folk Festival

The famous Wimborne Folk Festival returns to the town. We’re taking part with Morris dancers, music sessions, crafts, games, face painting and lots more! Poole Harbour Boat Show The fifth annual Poole Harbour Boat Show, in association with Sunseeker, will return to our shores this June, from its award-winning home, the Poole Quay Boat Haven. Thousands descend on Lulworth Castle for Dorset Blind Association’s annual Motor Show Thousands visited Lulworth Castle last month to support Dorset Blind Association’s annual Motor Show which took place on Sunday 12th May. This hugely successful and well attended event showcased over 180 cars in the motor display and welcomed over 3,000 general public visitors, raising an incredible £8,285.70 for the local sight loss charity! This prestigious event, now in its fifth year was held within the picturesque Lulworth Estate courtesy of James Weld DL, who is the charity’s President. The event set motorists out on a 20 mile tour around the Dorset countryside, following in convoy, before returning to Lulworth to display their beautiful motors at the Castle Showground. The event saw thousands of local supporters, holiday makers and car enthusiasts descend on the Castle throughout the day, creating an incredible community buzz. The Lulworth Castle Motor Show was open to the public free of charge and had something for all ages to enjoy; a range of local stalls selling handmade goods and local produce,

entertainment from the Gugge Band, a kids area with bouncy castle, face painting and an exclusive visit from the ever popular Peppa Pig! Attendees enjoyed relaxing in the afternoon sun with refreshments from The Fizz Tin, Hitch n Hop, The Heavenly Crepe, The Falafel Den and Dorset Catering Services, who also supplied the refreshments before the Dorset Tour to the car owners. Jan Jones, event attendee and owner of The Fizz Tin, said, ‘What a perfect day! We felt so lucky to be involved once again with this magnificent car show. An excellent turnout! The visitors seemed to love the new food and refreshment area too, enhanced by the beautiful weather and backdrop of Lulworth Castle. Incredibly well organised, with the friendliest charity staff and volunteers! Understanding Investments: Inheritance Tax Mitigation

What if your retirement lifestyle is secured and you have more capital and/or income than you need? What strategies can you put in place and when should you do this if you want to avoid paying further tax on your demise? The tax rules and exemptions regarding Inheritance Tax are well covered and I won’t recite them here. I would rather focus on high-level, practical strategies for you to consider. Effective Estate Planning In my experience, the greatest barrier to effective estate planning is a client worrying whether they have enough income/capital to last their lifetime. Quite rightly, they don’t want to leave themselves short and be forced to reduce their own lifestyle or worse, ask for any monetary gifts to be returned! So, I have put together a suggested strategy to answer that concern: 1. Prepare a cash-flow projection using current capital and income vs expenditure. Build into this inflation, anticipated capital expenditure and likely future changes such as reduced travel, additional funds to pay for help at home as you age and care home costs. Whilst you cannot predict the future, you can prepare for it and this projection helps quantify your likely needs. We prepare this for our clients and call it a “Lifetime Financial Plan.” Your plan can be adjusted as you grow older to account for changes to key assumptions. 2. The plan identifies any surplus capital which you are unlikely to require. For some clients whose income exceeds their expenditure, it also illustrates how the surplus capital will continue to grow as the surplus income accumulates and compounds the Inheritance Tax (IHT) issue. 3. If surplus capital is identified, Annual Exemptions exist which allow you to gift smaller sums (the most significant being £3000 per donor per annum) without having to survive seven years. Once exemptions have been utilized, you can then decide whether to gift funds outright or gift into a Trust. The reason client’s consider using trusts is usually around control and protection of the capital. As financial advisers we spend considerable time understanding this before recommending the most suitable solution.

4. Once a plan is in place for the capital, it is important that surplus Howard Goodship income doesn’t accumulate and re-build the original IHT issue. An often overlooked exemption is “regular gifts out of surplus income” so a strategy for making these should be put into place. Again, these gifts can be made outright or into a Trust and are immediately outside of an estate for IHT purposes. 5. Finally, there may still be an IHT liability. If so, it is possible to insure against that liability through Whole of Life Insurance, written into Trust. This can provide liquidity for the beneficiaries to pay any tax liability on the death of the donor. When is the best time to address Inheritance Tax planning? There is no right answer, but I usually suggest client’s settle into retirement, so they are better able to understand their likely expenditure requirements and then we can have an informed initial discussion. It is important to remember that one must survive seven years from the date of a capital gift for the capital to be deemed outside of one’s estate. In my experience, effective inheritance tax planning is best done gradually over a number of years with a strategy and initial steps taken following the creation of a “Lifetime Financial Plan.” We can then review the plan on an ongoing basis. Like all planning, it is best done with proper thought, in good time and not left to the last-minute! Next month, I will cover the different types of Trusts and provide ideas on how they can be used. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Daichi, otherwise known as “The Dashing Dude”, our new Dorset Publications Campervan, sees himself as a young, playful yet rather debonair kind of guy, so when he decided to take us to see the Dinosaur Footprints in the Purbecks, we were rather surprised. How can anything be that old!? (I did not look in the mirror this morning…) How on earth can these footprints be engraved for so long in the hard Purbeck stone? What a feat of nature. Our Jurassic Coastline is packed with amazing history for us to explore and marvel at, and Daichi could not wait to get us there. Dashing along the country roads, bouncing over the hills with magnificent views over the rolling countryside, Daichi was in his element. He is so glad he travelled over thousands of miles of terrain to finally arrive on our beautiful English soil.

Daichi braves the wind at Swanage

Daichi serves up lunch... with a view! The footprints can be found at Keats Quarry along the Priest’s Way on the Purbeck Coastline. Can you believe that these dinosaurs roamed our land some 140 million years ago! (Maybe I do not feel so bad about my age after all.) Yes, that long ago and we can still see their footprints today, fossilized in the rock. It is thought that this was a shallow lagoon where these brachiosaurs (translated as “arm lizard”) would gather to drink together. They were long necked plant eating dinosaurs, around 50 tonnes each, or five times the weight of a modern elephant, and measured more than 25 metres from nose to tail. Wow, that’s BIG! The environment was very different then too and shows the ever-changing climate that we live in. It is believed that this area was a sub-tropical wilderness of coastal forests and swamps. Over time, the footprints left in the soft mud were covered over by layers of

39 rock and preserved as the fossils we see today. Hayden had great fun trying to step from footprint to footprint, to literally follow in the dinosaurs’ footsteps. He finished up leaping (boys…) across at full stride, but even that was not enough. These dinosaurs were massive. Quarrymen Kevin Keates and Trevor Haysom discovered this amazing find in 1997 when the site was still being worked and Daichi is certainly glad they did. What a find! The famous Dancing Ledge is nearby and Daichi was all ears when he found out that this pool was blasted out of the rocks by a former headmaster of Dunford School, so that the pupils could swim in the summer. The school sadly no longer exits but its salty water pool enjoyed by thousands over the years is a playful legacy it has left behind. It so happens that Hayden, our son had been doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his school, and by chance he had done his expedition in the Purbecks with his friends. They had walked for two full days, carrying all their equipment,

One small step for a dinosaur... from the car park at the Sandbanks Chain Ferry to Corfe Castle where they camped for the night, then onto Swanage the next day. They looked pretty exhausted, but all were smiling when they arrived triumphant at their destination. I am sure the dinosaurs would have done this route in no time, with those powerfully long, yet graceful legs. It is fascinating to think that these boys and girls in 2019 took a very similar route to those amazing, extinct creatures of yesteryear, some 140 million years ago. Now there is a thought… Daichi was very proud he took us to somewhere we had never been before. That is his purpose, with his chirpy step and tooting horn. Where will he take us next, I wonder? Southern England Town Criers Annual Competition Held in Wimborne Minster The Town of Wimborne Minster hosted the Southern England Town Criers Competition today Bank Holiday Monday 6th May. Organised by Chris Brown, Town Crier and Town Mayor’s Serjant and his Deputy Mel Gudger who is Town Crier of Pamphill and Shapwick the event attracted 14 Criers from across a wide area. Originally held as part of the Blandford Forum Georgian Fayre it is now held in Wimborne every other year. The day started with a Parade from the Allendale Centre led by the Dorset Youth Marching Band to the Town Square. Before ‘Crying’ commenced the Band undertook a display in the Square. Introducing the Criers Chris Brown welcomed everybody including the Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Kelly Webb who had earlier drawn the running order for the two lots of ‘Cries’. In the morning the first round of ‘Cries’ was the ‘Home Town Cry’ and after a break for lunch at the Allendale Centre the second round of ‘Cries’ was with the theme ‘A Cry of the Criers choice’. It was a closely fought contest with only half a point separating each of the top three. Winner was Alistair Chisholm of Dorchester with second Christian Ashdown from Haslemere and third Gez Clark all the way from Eccleston.

There were also prizes for the Best Dressed Crier which was won by Christian Ashdown, the Best Dressed Couple Les and Liz Ellis from Dartmouth and the Best Dressed Escort Joan Dauncey from Melksham. All the winners were presented by the Town Mayor with an Annual Trophy (to be returned next year) and a Trophy to keep. Speaking after the event Chris Brown said, “it was a really good competition with a high standard of Cries and a large and engaged audience both in the morning and the afternoon”. He thanked all those who came and the judges for the important task they undertook.

Ferndown PROBUS Club Ferndown, West Moors, Ashley Heath, St. Ives, St. Leonards, West Parley and District PROBUS is a club for retired men. The Ferndown branch meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Dudsbury Golf Club, Ferndown, commencing at 12 noon. Meetings comprise a three-course luncheon followed by a talk, on a diverse range of subjects, given by invited Speakers. We also hold a coffee morning at the same venue on the second Wednesday of each month for members and their partners. Social gatherings are arranged throughout the year, such as outings to places of interest, restaurant lunches/dinners and trips supporting

On Your Plot

Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.

Jobs for June :-

• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem. Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?

Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

New Forest Show to donate all revenue from child ticket sales to The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is donating all proceeds from child ticket sales at the 2019 Show to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary. The bursary was established in 2018 in memory of Samantha Bailey and her unborn daughter Florence both of whom passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Samantha had been heavily involved with the Cattle Section of the New Forest Show for many years. The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July and 1st August 2019 at New Park, Brockenhurst. Tickets are available to purchase online now from the New Forest Show website. Sam was a young farmer and estate agent living in Tiptoe, Sway. Following in the footsteps of her grandparents and mother she led a wonderful life breeding and showing the Sandlea herd of Charolais cattle. At just 34 years of age Sam tragically fell ill on 16th January 2018 and died eight days after losing their daughter Florence late in the pregnancy. Sam was also a longstanding member of the New Forest Show’s Cattle Committee. The New Forest Agricultural Show Society set up a bursary in their memory. The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary aims to support young people in agricultural education, with two main aims: • Fund students attending agricultural college, allowing them to begin a career in agriculture. • Pay for applicants to attend short courses that will benefit their career in agriculture The bursary is supported and administered

by The New Forest Agricultural Show Society. The amount of subsidy provided will depend on the money raised throughout the year. All children aged 5-15 can enter the 2019 New Forest Show for just £1. Children aged 4 and under can enter for free. All adult and senior tickets purchased online via the New Forest Show website before 23rd July will receive a 15% advance ticket discount. New Forest Show tickets are also available to purchase in person at three locations: Pot Pourri in Brockenhurst, Christchurch Information Centre and Ringwood Town Council. Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs

A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.

Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley

1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.

Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread

5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
