will be kind and perhaps not quite so “British”, to give these wonderful events the best possible attendance. Although we do always try and enjoy them, in true British Style, whatever the weather! On that note our son’s school recently held both their sports day and summer fayre. Stephen has to admit that his neck is a little sunburnt after a glorious afternoon on the school field watching the displays of country dancing, karate and even a field gun that is going on a sponsored ‘pull’ later in the year. Hayden was very proud that his ‘red team’ won at the sports day… And he was chosen to help collect the overall trophy! That is his last year at the school, so one to be remembered. We love those pleasant memories, don’t we. I bet you have some of your own. Maybe you would even like to tell us about one of them and email a photo to go with your story? Royal interest in Young Environmentalist Challenge contest A COMPETITION for budding young environmentalists, which was backed by Sembcorp Bournemouth Water (SBW), Eco Sustainable Solutions and the Ferndown Haskins Garden Centre, has attracted royal attention. HRH Prince Charles has expressed an interest in the Young Environmentalist Challenge Competition and has asked the organisers, the Rotary Club of Ferndown, to send him a copy of the winning entries. More than 125 entries were received from pupils aged from five to 15 years at Ferndown’s three schools. They included over 100 designs for a sustainable wildlife garden as well as 20 essays and Powerpoint presentations on a wide variety of environmental issues, from wildlife conservation and coastal erosion to litter and vandalism. Speaking at the prizegiving ceremony, attended by more than 80 people at the Cobham Social Club in Merley, organiser Gerry Clarke praised the hard work, dedication and commitment of the young people entering the competition. “The standards of entry were remarkably high,” he said. ‘In fact, so successful has the competition been, next year we aim to roll it out to even more schools in Dorset and Hampshire,’ he closed. Simon Morris, General Manager at Ferndown’s Haskins Garden Centre, said that he was pleased to have been able to support the competition by providing prizes including garden tools, gloves, and vouchers. The winners were: Knoll Gardens Foundation Prize for Best Garden Design: Best First School pupil: Sophie Doswell, aged 8. Best Middle School pupil: Zoe Bingham, aged 11. Best Upper School student: Holly Turner, aged 17. 4-9 age category (Ferndown First School) First: Sophie Doswell, aged 8. Second: Will Boote, aged 7. Third: Lottie Woodings, aged 6.

The prizes included Kindle Fire mini tablets, books and vouchers with the overall winner, Michaela Sibsey, receiving a fully paid exchange trip to Dublin. The Rotary Club of Ferndown is twinned with Dublin North Rotary Club and Jack Kinane, Past President of the Dublin North Rotary Club, was among the guests at the prizegiving ceremony. In addition to the main prizes winners of the 9-13 age range were presented with a SBW ‘goody bag’ by Richard Stanbrook, SBW’s Director of Retail and Corporate Services, who highlighted the need to reduce water use in order to avoid over abstraction from source rivers. He also pointed out how people in the UK only used 50 litres per day at the turn of the century but this had increased to 150 which was having an impact on the country’s carbon footprint. Other sponsors of the competition included Knoll Gardens, Golden Acres. Chapelwood Wildlife Suppliers, CJ Wildbird Food and Lush.

Take part in The big ask and help shape your local NHS Health organisations across Dorset have come together to ask you to take part in The big ask - a unique survey which will help shape NHS services in the future. We are asking for your views on a whole range of NHS services, from your local GP and out of hours’ services to community, mental health and hospital services. The survey will look into how well informed you are about the various services available locally, how you choose your health care and what services you use the most. It will also ask how you think the NHS can provide information in the most effective way. Most importantly, it will seek your opinions on the NHS in Dorset – what you value the most and what can be improved. Announcing the launch of the project, Dr Forbes Watson, Chair of the NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group says: “It’s called The big ask for a reason. We are not just asking you for tick box responses. This is an in-depth analysis of your views. Everyone has a view on the NHS but The big ask is whether you are prepared to provide us with some really thought provoking responses that will help shape services in the future. “More than 750,000 people live in the region. This survey will ensure that patients and the public are at the heart of any decisions we make about the future of the NHS in the county. It will ensure we fully understand how people use our services and what they think our priorities should be.” This is the first time that NHS organisations
across the county have worked together on an exercise of this scale. It includes the major hospitals in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorc hester and Po o l e wo r k i n g together with the Dr Forbes Watson newly-formed Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, which represents the county’s 101 GP practices, and Dorset HealthCare, which provides community health ser vices across a wide range of locations. To ensure the exercise is independent it is being carried out by Bournemouth University’s Market Research Group. More than 12,000 people will be sent the survey but anyone can take part. “An ageing population, new treatments and rising expectations all require the NHS to continue to adapt and develop, but limited taxpayer funding makes the challenge greater each year,” continues Dr Watson. “Ensuring that NHS care remains of the highest quality, accessible and up to date means we need to establish our priorities and make some careful decisions over the next couple of years. “That is why this survey is so important and we want as many people as possible to have their say,” he adds. Sunshine greets the launch of a new free glorious garden guide The owners of specialist nurseries and hidden gardens across east Dorset gathered at Cranborne Garden Centre on 19 June. The occasion was the official launch of a new partnership to promote the area’s strong horticultural traditions. They were joined by local dignitaries, including the Chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr. Malcolm Birr. The initiative is the idea of Rachel Limb, Tourism Manager, East Dorset who has spearheaded the production of a new leaflet ‘Specialist Nurseries and Hidden Gardens of East Dorset’ and is now promoting the area at both local and national garden shows. ‘Specialist Nurseries and Hidden Gardens of East Dorset’ has been created to encourage visitors to the area to find out where to enjoy walled gardens and historic garden buildings, the best places to buy quality plants, and, of course enjoy delicious local ice creams amid the flowers. It also provides details of local accommodation, including country cottages and an Edwardian country home – all with their own delightful gardens to enjoy. Speaking at the launch Rachel said, “It is wonderful to look around and see so many passionate plantspeople gathered here today. East Dorset has an incredible horticultural heritage and I hope that by working together we can encourage more people to explore our glorious garden attractions and take home some of the stunning plants grown in our nurseries.
“East Dorset is home to awardwinning growers of roses, camellias, fuchsias, blueberries, azaleas, acers and heathers, as well as the multiple Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winning ornamental grasses of Knoll Gardens. We hope this leaflet will go a little way towards explaining why nurseries have flourished in East Dorset and encourage plant enthusiasts across the country to buy with confidence from our horticultural pioneers.” Chairman of East Dorset District Council, Cllr Malcolm Birr added, “I think this is a great initiative. West Parley – a different view Old maps tell us a lot of things about places but often do not have much detail about the area they cover. Buildings are often just shapes on the paper. So it was a revelation when a neighbour recently gave me a map of both West and East Parley drawn up by a resident in 1922 that showed the villages as they were in 1860. The difference is that it is done in a style that is more an illustration than a proper scaled map. It shows a sketch of each actual building. It also shows a number of features that are worth mentioning. Between Parley Street (now Church Lane) and Wood Town Farm is says ‘Traces of Folk Moot site’. This is described as ‘a general assembly of the people of a town, district or shire in Medieval England’, ie a place for community meetings before there was a formal structure of local government. It shows West Parley Cross Roads at the end of Church Lane, individual ponds, sawpits and buildings, such as Dudsbury Barn on the current Parley Cross. It is also interesting to see 2 cottages, described as almshouses. These are described in old parish records as ‘The Barracks’ but were thought
to be at what is now the north end of New Road, at the time in the parish. This is firm evidence of their location. The census of 1851 shows a Thomas Cutler aged 74 and Sarah Cutler aged 76 living in one property and a Jane Marshall, aged 62 living next door. All ‘occupations’ are described as ‘Parish Relief’. The only 2 other residents described like that were in their late ‘60s and living with Arthur Legg, widower, the Clerk of the Parish Council. There is a small school shown on the corner of Christchurch Road and the lane to Heathfield Farm. The ‘Old Road to Ringwood’ would have gone from the Longham over West Parley Common to Palmers Ford to cross the Moors River. As can be seen, the separate hamlets of Dudsbury and West Parley were in 1860 just a string of individual houses and farms spread mainly along the current Christchurch Road and Church Lane. What is so interesting is the size of East Parley at the time. Many farms, schools, shops, blacksmiths and taverns have all disappeared. John Cullen

CORNER Making a Will
Making a will is something that many people tend to avoid, on the basis that it is ‘morbid’, ‘not needed yet’ and a myriad of other reasons. Well, whilst the thought of what happens after our death is perhaps scary or uncomfortable, the reality is that at some point it IS going to happen! So why not bite the bullet and get it done, out of the way and make a resolve to review it at regular milestones so that should the worst happen unduly early at least you know your loved ones have provisions made for them, big or small. Writing a will ensures that it is YOU who makes the decisions over your property and possessions after your death. It’s a good idea to get help when writing your will but you can do it yourself. Make sure you are over 18 years old; writing it voluntarily and you are of sound mind; signed by yourself in the presence of two witnesses and also signed by those witnesses too. Of course you also need to make sure it is held in a safe place accessible after your death. There are many companies available who can assist with this, or a family solicitor can also store your documents. Make sure that you make statements about who you want to benefit from your will; who should look after any children under 18 years of age; who you wish to act on your behalf to carry out the wishes laid out in your will and what happens if the people who you want to benefit die before you do.

Free Family Fun in Bournemouth this Summer! Beside the seaside Dorset Wildlife Trust is very excited to take part in the Wildlife Trust’s annual celebration of our fantastic coast, with National Marine Week 2013. Events are taking place all over the country, and this is a chance for anyone, of any age to get involved with what lies above, beneath and in Dorset’s iconic seas.

Many of us forget that beneath the waves there is a rich marine world, bursting with colour and life. Fish, lobsters, limpets and anemones all thrive in our local waters – and, in the summer months, dolphins hunt close to our shores.
If you’re crab-mad, and fancy a day with us at Kimmeridge, there will be an opportunity for families to attend the ‘Crafty Crabs’ event at 12.30 on Wednesday 7th August, where children can create crazy crustaceans. If you then want to learn about how to catch and care for crabs without harm to other rockpool animals, we will show you how – the eco-friendly way! Our ‘Ecofriendly Crabbing’ event starts in the afternoon, at 3pm.

WEST PARLEY PACT (Partners and Communities Together) Our Panel is part of a national scheme and was started in May 2010. Its aim is to discuss any issues identified by members of the community and decide how to tackle and resolve them. It is multiagency involving the Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, East Dorset Community Safety, Neighbourhood Watch, Parish Council, Dorset POPP, Parley First School and Dorset Fire & Rescue. The Panel has instigated the yellow parking lines outside Parley First School on Glenmoor Road and the Speed Indicator Device also in Glenmoor Road.
At the May meeting, the following matters were discussed:
1. Funding for 2 ‘pupil’ bollards to be placed on the pavement outside Parley First School on Glenmoor Road to stop pavement parking. 2. The Community Speedwatch scheme – the purchase of a hand held device. 3. Reduction of speed limits to 20mph outside Ferndown schools at the beginning and end of the school day. 4. East Dorset being the fourth most ‘peaceful’ authority in the UK (in terms of crime rates).

The Scarecrows of Bisterne Strike Again Beings with eyes that saw nothing, stared out, and people gathered round them to look curiously on. The 2012 annual scarecrow festival of Bisterne, in Hampshire, had begun. The straw folk took up residence along the highways and byways of the rural communities of Bisterne, Kingston and Sandford that lie on the borders of the New Forest National Park. For two weeks, in good weather and in foul, the scarecrows stood, exhibiting the creative talent of the local community. The festival was started in 2002, partly for fun but also to raise funds for Bisterne Village Hall, which itself was built in 1840 and originated as the village school. The contest since then has gone from strength to strength. Who said scarecrows are not important or taken seriously? Indeed, the history of the scarecrow itself goes right back into the mists of time. It is believed that 3,000 years ago Egyptian farmers made scarecrows along the River Nile to protect their crops from flocks of birds. The ancient Greeks also used them for the same reason. The English, however, were somewhat later in their use of the straw folk! It was not until the Great Plague of 1348, which killed
so many, that land owners, unable to find enough young boys to act as ‘bird scarers’, or ‘shooers’, started to stuff sacks with straw and carved faces in turnips or gourds, in order to protect their cops. Returning to the present day, the scarecrows of 2012 were far from mere sacks of straw with a turnip head! There were a total of twenty three entries, which expressed widely different interests including the Olympics, dragons, gnomes, speed-cops, gamekeepers and the great British summer. There was plenty for the children to enjoy such as Woody Toy Story, Alice through the looking Glass, Yubba Dubba Doo and Hansel and Gretel. The dragons, for instance, defiantly made their presence felt. The pair ‘Unicorn Jack and St George’s Dragon’ won both the pairs category as well as the best overall scarecrow. The unicorn stood tall and proud while the dragon itself lay by its side, curled up with its tail wrapped round and its well structured head rested on the ground. ‘Dragon’s Den’, which won second place in the single scarecrow category, was a large bright green
41 dragon with big yellow spots, sitting in its lair. Perchance it was dreaming of times gone by when “a devouring dragon” that lived in near by Burley Beacon “did much mischief upon man and cattel”. At Bisterne in 1459, so the story tells us, one Sir Maurice Berkeley encountered the dragon and together with his two trusty hounds, killed it. The legend is commemorated by names in the area such as Dragon Lane, Dragon Cottages and Dragon Field. Further along the road was ‘High Sheriff Hallam’. A tall gentleman scarecrow, dressed in a smart black suit with silver buttons and donning knee length boots. Indeed, the real Giles Marshall Hallam Mills, to give him his full name, is currently serving as the High Sheriff of Hampshire. It is an interesting note that the office itself is over 1,000 years old, having its roots in Saxon times and is the oldest continuous secular office under the crown. The Olympics was very much present in the contest. Jessica Ennis MBE and current Olympic heptathlon champion was represented. She was dressed in a red, white and blue outfit which was completed by a large gold medal hung around her neck with ‘Jess’ inscribed on it. The union Jack fluttered gently behind her. Standing next to her was Boris Johnson, Mayor of London. Dressed in a blue shirt and trousers his mayoral chain of office glistened in the sun. The notice beside him read ‘Boris Johnson, in training for Rio 2016’! The Queen herself was only to be seen if you looked up into the tree behind. Reflecting the Olympic Opening Ceremony, she was dressed in a pale
pink, long sleeved dress. If you looked closely enough you would see that she was sporting a badge declaring “I love 007”. Parachute straps dangled above. At Lower Kingston, a small, bright multicoloured cottage could be seen on the road side. The inside was fitted out with all the home comforts of a cooker, table, chairs and even pictures on the walls. Outside poor Hansel was locked in a cage and looked very unhappy. At least readers of Brothers Grimm could be comforted by knowing that the story ends happily ever after. It must have been a sad day, when the festival came to a close, and the roads no longer homed dragons, scarecrow speed-cops or the like. Happily, however, the festival will be held again this year, and will run from August 18th until September1st. If you are in the area, it may well be worth a visit. Scarecrows of 2013, we await you. Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of ‘Audi ultra’ lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80 kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level. British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options – SE, Sport and S line all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the optional adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out. On the move, the A3 Sport oil-burner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s more twisty roads like a limpet. There is plenty of room for you and your passenger in the front, although your friends in the rear seats might find it hard to stretch their legs out. That said, all the seats are supportive and the 2.0-litre 150 TDI lump allows you to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. But the car doesn’t stop there; where legal the needle will spin way up the dial to 134 mph. The rapid acceleration is made all the more easy to achieve thanks to the all-new A3’s slick six-speed manual gearbox.
Not only is this first-class hatchback’s turbo diesel engine quick, it is also highly fuel efficient. Engine start-stop technology and energy recuperation systems enable the A3 2.0 TDI Sport to achieve up to 68.9 mpg – and this is the selling point. Yes, the Audi is quick, comfortable and stylish – but, more importantly, it will keep you from frequently forking out at the pumps.

STRAWBERRY SHERBET
Succulent, fragrant and local. The local strawberry industry from the 1860’s gave rise to jam production and the ‘strawberry specials’ - trains delivering our lovely local produce to London and around the UK. To celebrate our Strawberry Coast here’s a wonderful modern twist on an old fashioned sherbet. As well as being delicious, there are health benefits in these little gems including impressive amounts of Vitamin C and high levels of anti oxidants. Equipment: Food processor or jug blender. Ingredients for 4 servings 300g fresh local strawberries A few turns of cracked black pepper 2 or 3 squares of dark grated chocolate, chili flavor optional to decorate. 30ml fresh lemon juice 30g caster sugar 250ml cold refrigerated whole milk Fresh mint for garnish (optional)
Method: Wash and remove any green leaves or stalks from the strawberries. Pop four aside and freeze the rest for 40 minutes to 1 hour until softly frozen. Dice 3 and slice 1 of the 4 strawberries. These are to be added to the finished sherbet. The slices will be used for the topping. Grate the chocolate. Place frozen strawberries in a food processor with sugar and lemon juice. Pulse to chop them initially then run processor until almost a puree. Pour the milk through the feed tube into the mix whilst still processing until the ingredients are ONLY JUST blended. Stir in diced fresh strawberries and a few turns of cracked black pepper before spooning into dessert dishes. Garnish with sprigs of fresh mint, slices of strawberry and grated chocolate.
