As if life is not already busy enough! It is also a time of year that we think of others less fortunate than ourselves. The team here at Dorset Publications has been very proud to work with Wave 105 and create some needed donations for our disadvantaged children here in the South with the “Cash for Kids” Appeal. Lions record autumn quiz The Barrington Theatre Ferndown was packed on Thursday 10th October when 125 players turned up to compete in the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions annual autumn quiz. Several thanks are in order. Firstly, to the Barrington management who were generally very helpful and squeezed all the tables and chairs evenly over the available space.
Secondly to veteran quizmaster Ken Taylor. He says this was his swansong but he conducted proceedings as smoothly as ever. Thirdly to all the Lions who provided all the food, the raffle, distributed the scripts etc and did the scoring – a great team effort. Finally our thanks to the players ( below ) who combined to raise a net profit of over £750 which will go to selected Lions charities.

Calling all book lovers! A popular home library service, run by Royal Voluntary Service, the national volunteering organisation, is looking to grow its service for housebound readers in the BCP Council area. The Home Library Service brings books to people who can no longer get to a library. It operates from most libraries in Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth. Volunteers deliver books and share their love of reading with the people they visit. They are a friendly face and a regular visitor to those whose mobility and social interactions are limited, and they provide a useful check on the safety and well-being of their readers, too. One of our readers commented: “It is an excellent service; it’s a real delight when it is hard to get to the library oneself. The volunteer is so friendly, they may be the only person I shall see all day.”

Talking about Wildlife...
Fascinating Fungi Fungi don’t fit into the plant or animal kingdoms but into an entire category of their own. The Fungi kingdom is a large group of organisms that includes yeasts, moulds, and, of course, mushrooms. Found everywhere - in the soil, in water, on and within plants, and even in the human body - fungi are essential to life on earth and they have a fascinating biology. Fungi play an important role within our ecosystems, helping to recycle nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere. Without fungi, these recycling activities would be seriously reduced, and we would have a lot more decaying material around our feet. They are important directly as food for us, with many edible mushroom species grown and harvested for sale and some mushrooms and truffles considered as delicacies. While mushrooms aren’t a large proportion of what we eat day to day, fungi are also widely used in the production of many other foods and drinks such as cheeses, beer and wine, and bread. Fungi are also vitally important for the good

growth of most plants and crops. In 1885, German biologist Albert Bernard Frank coined the word “mycorrhiza” to describe this symbiotic relationship in which fungus grows around plant roots. This gives the plants greater access to water and minerals such as phosphorus and nitrogen and even increases their immunity. In exchange, the plant provides carbohydrates and other nutrients to the fungi. Dorset Wildlife Trust manages many nature reserves to support and benefit all kinds of wildlife, including fungi. In west Dorset, Kingcombe Meadows and Powerstock are some of the best places in England to find fungi species, many of them rare, all of them beautiful. The huge variation in geology and plant life at Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve ensures a variety of habitats which allows for a larger variety of fungus species than one would expect in a few hundred acres. The Kingcombe Centre’s 2020 programme of events is now live, which includes Fungi courses, so you can learn more about this fascinating subject. Colehill Scout Group spruces up bathroom with donation from Talbot Village Trust Talbot Village Trust has donated £2,500 to Colehill Scout Group to enable the charity to upgrade the bathroom facilities in the original Scout hut, that first opened in the 1970s.
Colehill Scout Group has taught valuable life lessons through adventure to boys and girls aged between six and 18 since the 1970s. Over 100 young people are currently members of the 1st Colehill Scout Group, which encourages members to spend some time in nature and to put their new skills into practice. The Scout hut, which is shared with Colehill Girlguiding, has been modernised over time but the bathroom facilities have remained the same since it first opened more than 45 years ago. The donation made by Talbot Village Trust has funded a complete revamp of the facilities, in addition to making the bathroom Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant. This means that the Scouts can now promote further inclusion of all children in the group. Steve Hemsil, Executive Committee Member, said: “We are very grateful to Talbot Village Trust for enabling us to provide facilities for the young people of the Scout and Guide groups. Having up-to-date DDA compliant facilities will make big changes to the kids that are already part of our group and for future generations to come.”
Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “Colehill Scout Group has such a positive impact on young boys and girls in our community. We believe that scouting has a big impact on young people’s lives by teaching them important values and skills. The group has given the children access to amazing activities and life opportunities that will follow them as they grow older, and with our help they now have the facilities to match their amazing experience.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually and is accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in spring 2020. Rabbits, Kindness and Mission Christmas What has big ears, a twitchy nose and is loved and adored by a small person? A Sylvanian Family rabbit to the average adult human looks like a small hard plastic rabbit covered in a velvet material – it stands, motionless on two feet. However, to the 5-year-old girl who received not only one rabbit but also a whole family of rabbits, this was her world over Christmas. A world she could escape into, make up stories and create imaginary lives. Lily* was one of the children who was helped by Wave 105 Mission Christmas. Identified by her school as a family in need of support, Lily and her dad had been through a rough time and were struggling financially. Dad as a single parent was trying to make ends meet by juggling work and looking after his daughter. They only just had enough money for basic needs – food and a roof over their head but certainly not enough for presents. Lily’s school contacted us and asked if we would add them to our list of families to help. Her teacher mentioned that all Lily wanted this Christmas was a Sylvanian Family animal and her dad had been scouring charity shops to find one but to no avail. Every day during December, an army of volunteers in Chandlers Ford were counting and sorting through the mountain of donated presents. Every day they checked for specifically requested toys but no luck for Lily. Then one morning towards the end of Mission Christmas, a van-load of presents was delivered from Sainsbury’s and in the midst of the trains, cars, dolls, teddies, books and Lego was a Sylvanian rabbit family and a house for them to live in. Lily’s teacher collected and gave them to her dad. Lily was able to play with her little family over Christmas and throughout the following year. This would not have happened without the generosity of individuals and companies who donate every year to Mission Christmas. Over 93,000 children and young people live in poverty in the south (SO, PO and BH postcodes)** which means these children do not eat a hot meal on a daily basis, have no central heating in their homes and do not own a full uniform to wear to school. During our annual Mission Christmas campaign, Wave 105 Cash for Kids asks the public to donate new and unwrapped gifts to help these disadvantaged youngsters, so they will have something to open on Christmas Day. Kaden runs in memory of Hero dad An 8 year-old local boy has raised almost £1,700 for charity after completing the Junior 1.5K at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival in memory of his Dad. Kaden Dugmore from Poole decided to run for Forest Holme Hospice because they had provided end-of-life care for his Dad, Karl, who passed away aged just 39 in August this year. Kaden sacrificed his playtime to train by competing in Sunday Park Runs or in the evenings with his Uncle Bodge, come rain or shine. He said, “I ran the Junior 1.5K in memory of my Daddy who was my Hero and lots of his friends called him ‘Legend’. Daddy loved to run whenever he could squeeze in the time from taking care of me. I know I will make him very proud. This is my first challenge and I hope there will be more.” Paul Tucker, Fundraising Manager at Forest Holme, said, “Kaden is a very special little boy and we are all so Kaden, with his late Dad, Karl

touched by what he has done and absolutely overwhelmed with the amount he has raised. She said, “We would like to thank all of the staff at Forest Holme Hospice for the love, care and respect that you gave to Karl and our family while we were there. Understanding Investments: How to Combat Inflation - The Enemy of Retirees Anyone on a fixed income will know the painful effect inflation can have on their expenditure. When the cost of living increases almost every year, one’s standard of living is eroded unless your income is inflation-proofed. People in retirement are particularly exposed to this risk; inflation really is the silent but clinical assassin of a worry-free retirement! The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publish a composite price index, showing inflation rates in the UK since 1947. We probably don’t need to plan for over 60 years of inflation during retirement…. but we should be planning for around 30 years. Going back to 1988, the average inflation rate for the most recent 30year period has been 3.1% per annum. This doesn’t sound high, but it means £10,000 in 1988 would now need to be £26,341 to have the same purchasing power (ie buy the same things).

With the current low interest rate environment, capital can quickly be depleted.
I am not suggesting that investing in dividend paying equity funds is the answer to a secure and happy retirement. Capital values can fluctuate, as can the dividend payments. I am suggesting that there are high quality investment solutions available which, in the right circumstances and for the right client, can help solve this problem experienced by many retirees. Of course, there is still a place for cash, NS&I and other low risk investments, which should form the foundation of a saver’s investment portfolio. But unless you know you have enough capital to last throughout your lifetime, holding only cash or fixed rate investments leaves you fully exposed to the risk of inflation, which compounds annually and is unrelenting.

The Dorset Publications Camper Van For anyone who is new to reading these fun pages, I would like to give you some background. They are meant to be a little tongue in cheek, family and friends orientated with places to visit around our wonderful southern coast and countryside. “Daichi” is a Japanese Nissan Elgrand, a converted Campervan who has a life of his own. He likes to show off and it is he that gets us out of the house, away from the computers and the TV, looking outwards. Daichi had his first criticism last month, a serious gentleman who did not see eye to eye with the “Dashing Dude’s” playful nature. You see, we like to bring a smile to your face and maybe lighten life up a bit. (We sincerely apologise to the gentleman who clearly did not react like this.) After-all there are plenty of things that do the opposite, so let’s not be too serious, let’s live a little, have some good old English entertainment and create some great memories. Here we go… again! Daichi really did his homework this month. Caring for the environment is so important and Daichi found something rather special. True to his nature, this area has a name that makes you instantly smile…

A sighting of the lesser-spotted Debbie! “Slop Bog”. Yes, we went to Slop Bog! You can imagine my reaction, or maybe best not to. Actually, this is a fascinating place, situated just off the A31 to Ferndown and the B3072 to West Moors. It is an SSSI that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest! Not only is it a fascinating place to explore, but it was saved by a group of people who call themselves, “The Slop Bog Guardians”. How wonderful is that. Way back in 2003 trees were going to be felled and this group of dedicated locals got together to save the day. Their motto is - “To preserve and protect the character of Slop Bog Local Nature Reserve by maintaining a balance between the views of the local community and national conservation strategies”. Daichi is impressed. We had got all kitted out in wellies and raincoats, and Daichi had the coffee ready. He knows me well. Off we set, rather early for us as the weather was going to turn and we did not want to get caught in the bog and have to be air-rescued. (as if… remember the time Nellie got stuck in the mud…) As soon as you enter the bog area, there is the peaceful silence of wondrous

39 nature, with a wall, a backdrop of constant swishing and humming from the hundreds of cars passing on the main road just on the other side of the majestic outline of trees. The difference between our busy, hustling, noisy lifestyle and the serenity of nature is unmissable. Not far into the bog we saw, what I thought was something burnt in the middle of a clump of trees… showing my ignorance, it turned out to be a food block, possibly a salt lick for the cows roaming around! The trampled muddy earth around it, made it look like a burning. Maybe I am once again showing the difference between our ‘dangerous environment’ which is all too often prevalent in the news and the calmness of what was actually before me. A very good reason to get out, away from our electronic age for a while. The British White Cattle even came over to say Hello and prove it was a feeding area! Stephen enjoyed doing his best David Bailey impersonation, taking lots of photos of the curious calf. We regrettably did not see any lizards, snakes or slow worms, or maybe this was a blessing as Daichi may have screeched off and left us stranded. In the summer this is a haven for butterflies and birds including Stonechats, Dartford Warbler,

Cattle roam the heathland Nightjars, Snipes and the Greater Spotted Woodpecker. This day you could only see the Lesser Spotted Debbie… literally in my raincoat. Frogs love it here too and all sorts of funghi thrive in full glory. The beauty, the space and the tranquillity really helps you to see things in perspective, ‘chill out’ (literally, as it was not too warm) and collect your thoughts. The coffee that Daichi provided from his whistling kettle, overlooking the heathland was very welcomed. A simple morning out on a cold, slightly wet November day. Life does not have to be full on 24-7. Time out can make all the difference. There are hundreds of these Sites of Scientific Interest, over 4000 in fact in the UK and 240 in Dorset alone. Maybe you could find one and let Daichi know? He loves to hear from you. It is always possible to help and volunteers are welcomed with open arms. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn some new skills and look after the environment. A win-win we say. As Christmas is coming and there is much to do, do remember to take some time out for yourself. Taking a walk is very therapeutic. A Very Merry Christmas to you all, from Daichi the Dashing Dude! Dorset Chamber President Joins British Chamber Board Current President of Dorset Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Founder of Communications agency, Liz Lean PR, has been appointed to the Board of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) during the organisation’s AGM in London yesterday.
Following an interview and validation process by the BCC’s Nominations Committee, composed of representatives from across the Chamber network and the BCC Board, Liz’s appointment was recommended along with two other candidates from Glasgow and the East Midlands. GUIDE Composting
No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Wimborne’s Victorian Christmas Extravaganza Visitors and locals will be able to step back in time in Wimborne this Christmas, with a traditional Victorian theme throughout the town and an outdoor rink on the Minster Green, combined with a packed programme of events for the festive season. New this December, will see the arrival of Wimborne’s outdoor rink, a fun, synthetic, magic rink located on the Minster Green. The rink will provide the perfect magical Christmas setting with the Minster as a stunning backdrop. Saturday 7th December sees the return of ‘Small Business Saturday’, where local small businesses will have festive offers and promotions. St John’s Church Christmas Celebrations will also take place on Saturday 7th December from 10am. The popular Alpine Bar returns to The Square from Thursday 12th December. Soak up the festive atmosphere with friends and family whilst enjoying a glass of mulled wine and a festive treat! Wimborne’s Save The Children Parade returns on Saturday 14th December, with a fun-packed family day of activities ending in the parade at 2pm. The parade of floats and bands starts at Cobhams and weaves through the town ending at the Square. Father Christmas and the Snow Princess will also make an appearance! Christmas Son et Lumiere also returns on Saturday 14th December. This magical free event is back for
its 5th year. Watch the Christmas lights and video projected onto the Wimborne Minster accompanied by music. Supported by Radio Wimborne, it’s a joy for the whole family. The 20-minute show starts at 5.30pm and will be repeated throughout the evening. Carols in the Cornmarket will take place on Friday 20th December 6pm. Bring your friends and family for a traditional Christmas sing-along and why not stop by at one of the local cafes and pubs for a festive drink or mince pie! Free parking will be available on the 23rd November, 7th December and the 14th December with further dates to be added. The Wimborne BID supports and represents businesses within the town. Working closely with the Town and District Council, the BID assists with funding through supporting events, business, advertising and helping to keep the town a welcoming place for visitors and locals. Marine Paintings of the New Forest Exhibition The New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst is now host to its first marine painting exhibition dedicated to the New Forest National Park’s beautiful coastal environment. The event was opened by Hon. Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott at a well-attended preview evening in October. The exhibition features five local artists: Barry Peckham, Peter Frost, Richard Tratt, Colin Richens and Barry Miles. Barry Peckham recently celebrated 50 years of painting with a retrospective exhibition, also at the New Forest Heritage Centre. Peter Frost said, “it’s been great working towards this exhibition and we are all thrilled to see our paintings looking so good on display in the centre of the New Forest”.

Giles Gould, Centre Manager, is delighted to be able to show the coastal beauty of the New Forest National Park. “The New Forest occupies 220 square miles and has 26 miles of stunning coastline, much of which is little-known. This is a great opportunity to come and be inspired by these fabulous paintings of the coast, and I hope that visitors will be able to see some of these places for themselves.” Entry to the New Forest Heritage Centre and gallery is free, though donations are very much appreciated. Works are for sale.

Tastes so good... Mulled Wine
An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don't bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Eat, Drink and be merry!
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)
Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 4- 6 adults
Method
Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the avours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the ďŹ reside.
