4 Dear Neighbours, Wow! What fantastic weather we have had this Edition 101 year, except of course the flash flooding in some areas. We have been lucky enough to avoid this. Stephen, myself and our ‘roaming reporter’ son, Hayden age 10, had a brilliant day at The New Forest Show. The show Debbie & Stephen Corney jumping horses were just with our son, Hayden magnificent, the Heavy Horses stood so proud and confident, in all their glory and the guys on the motocross bikes were riveting! Improving the way we care for older people Services for older people are being transformed at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital through a combination of staff engagement, strengthened leadership and redesigning how we care for older people. More importantly, it’s the result of patient and carer feedback. We have also been working with Professor David Oliver who is PresidentElect of the British Geriatrics Society. Here are some of the ways we are improving the hospital experience for our older patients: Improving care for patients with dementia Ward 26 has been renovated to improve the environment and quality of care for patients who have dementia. The bays, reception area and facilities have received design changes that make wards less confusing for those with dementia. A communal area has been created with comfortable chairs and a screen showing appropriate images, giving patients the opportunity to socialise. Each bay has a flower theme with distinctive images on the entrance doors, helping to orientate patients back to their own bay and bed.
r developing a compassionate care training programme to improve the staff culture and patient experience. r an older persons’ nurse practitioner is working on ward 3 to support the needs of older people. The ethos of the ward is to provide ongoing transitional care and rehabilitation for medically stable patients, while waiting for intensive support from social and community health services, to support a timely discharge. r JNplemented a specialist training programme to strengthen the skills of our doctors, nurses and therapy workers to manage older people’s needs. We have also: r recruited rehabilitation healthcare assistants to provide interim care in patients’ own homes while they are awaiting long term packages of care. r developed ambulatory (day care or outpatient) care clinics for older people providing rapid access to consultant geriatricians, therapists and nurses. The clinics provide an alternative to being admitted to hospital. r introduced the Quality Mark for Elder Friendly Hospital Wards on all older people wards and the stroke unit, to ensure a continuous focus on the care provided to older people. This is our commitment to achieve high quality of care for all older people. Andrew Williams, Consultant Geriatrician, said “I am extremely proud of the improvements made over recent months. We are beginning to develop services that can be compared against national best practice. I am excited about the future as we aspire to become a centre of excellence for older people’s health care.”

We now have a short stay admissions ward. Patients are supported by designated social workers, discharge planning key workers and experienced therapists. This has been developed through a range of patient feedback forums and strong leadership - critical to providing safe, compassionate care. Other improvements include: r a transitional care ward (ward 3) supporting patients with complex needs to prepare for discharge from hospital back into a community setting

Bumper harvest for all-natural Dorset blueberries The blueberry crop at Trehane’s PYO Hampreston plantation has already broken records by fruiting two weeks earlier than ever before. It is now also set to be the biggest crop on record.

Owner Jeremy Trehane explains the bumper crop as a combination of great weather and completely natural growing conditions. “It’s been an incredible year for growing blueberries,” said Jeremy. “A virtually frost-free winter was followed by a mild spring and early flowering allowing the fruit to also set early. The recent warm weather then ripened the berries faster than usual resulting in a bumper crop of our delicious Earliblue and the sweet Collins varieties.” This perfect crop comes just as Jeremy celebrates the 50th anniversary of his PYO blueberry plantation – incredibly still picking from many of the original plants imported by his father from New Jersey, USA, back in 1964. “In America they ‘retire’ their blueberry bushes as unproductive after around 30 years,“ said Jeremy. “For us they just seem to keep on growing! As we were the first nursery to plant blueberries in the UK there is no UK comparison, but I firmly believe that the continuing success of our fruit is down to being totally naturally grown. We do not use any artificial fertilisers or pesticides and even our water comes from our own spring”. Trehane’s blueberry bonanza is a real bonus for fresh blueberry fans many of whom travel long distances to enjoy the freshest of fruit straight from the bush or fill their freezers to benefit from the fruit’s proven antioxidant properties throughout the year. Four years ago blueberries overtook raspberries to become Britain’s second most popular fruit and commercial production has increased by nearly 500% in the last six years in a rush to meet increasing demand. “In America July is feted as national blueberry month,” said Jeremy. “As the increasing popularity of these tasty little berries continues to grow over here perhaps it is time to introduce a British blueberry day?”

Ferndown’s Hidden Gem: Barrington Theatre The Barrington Theatre is the jewel in Ferndown’s Crown, according to its new Manager, Andrew Bryant. The Theatre is situated directly across from the Tesco superstore in Penny’s Walk and boasts a great range of rooms to hire, its coffee house, and the fully equipped auditorium which can hold 400+ people for a gig. The Barrington is home to its governing charity the Ferndown Community Association which was set up in 1984 to run the building and ensure that the Community benefits from this amazing asset. The Committee (called the GMC) employed Andrew back in April to assist with bringing a new lease of life to the Theatre and re-engage with more of the Community to ensure the future of the Charity. “The Barrington is a very well loved and looked after building and over the years so many people have put so much hard work and effort into keeping everything alive and busy. I am in the very privileged position of continuing this good work and really pushing the building forward so that everyone knows who we are and what we are now doing. I have a large passion for live music and see the Barrington as a great venue for big name headline acts. “As part of the Community side of the Barrington we are hosting lots of free-
to-enter gigs including a ‘Sunday Club’ evening gig hosting just local bands on the first Sunday of the month every month, plus our already established and much loved Jazz Cafe every other Thursday. I am currently in conversation with several big acts for gigs throughout next year to enable me to raise our profile and to bring a new level of quality of service to our Community. “We are also now planning our own beer festival in May, a jazz festival in July, and lots of other exciting events this year and next to keep people coming back,” said Andrew. With online ticketing, a new website being launched soon, future online room bookings, updated telecommunications, and a new logo, the Theatre staff are really modernising everything behind the scenes to ensure a great experience. The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) is never short of support when it comes to people taking on crazy challenges. Kevin Lindsay, who teaches locally, will be heading off on a 1000 mile unsupported cycle later this month and is kindly raising funds for the JTYAF. We would be really grateful if you could promote his support of the foundation and maybe help to raise some extra sponsorship. Kevin Lindsay fancied a bit of a bike ride this summer as a personal challenge and also as an opportunity to raise some money for his chosen charity, the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Kevin, who teaches locally, plans is to get the ferry from Poole to St Malo and over two weeks cycle unsupported, the 1000 miles to Nice on the Mediterranean coast. Kevin explained his reasons for choosing the JTYAF:“The JTYAF raises money to enable young people to work towards fulfilling their potential through adventurous activities. As a teacher, I get to see the personal development offered by these activities such as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Combined Cadet Force and the Air Cadets etc etc, so it was a natural charity to support.”

Talking about Wildlife...
Celebrate marine wildlife! The world’s oceans cover approximately 70% of the planet’s surface, supporting an amazing array of life, with thousands of different species and habitats. The British coastline is also rich and colourful with habitats from rocky shores to sea grass meadows, teeming with valuable fish stock and species such as basking sharks, dolphins, grey seals and puffins. Here in Dorset we have a spectacular range of marine species; Poole Bay is the home to the rare Couch’s goby, Chesil Beach is inhabited by one of our most glamorous soft-corals, the pink sea fan, and South Dorset hosts an area of mixed seabed habitat, to mention but a few.
Diversity of life is one of the most valuable and fascinating things about the marine environment. Unfortunately, marine wildlife all over the world has come under constant pressure – mainly due to human activities. Overfishing and marine litter are amongst the biggest threats, and it is estimated that 100,000 marine mammals

and turtles and one million seabirds are killed every year by litter. It is therefore vital that everyone do their part to help safeguard our coastal environment and the marine ecosystems. Small steps such as making sure that household waste and plastic are properly disposed of or recycled, never using the toilet as a bin, and by reducing unnecessary packaging all go a long way. Seashore is a wonderful place to explore at any time, and to celebrate UK’s marine wildlife the Wildlife Trusts are organising the annual National Marine Week, which this year runs from Saturday July 26 to Sunday August 10. Dorset Wildlife Trust is providing a range activities, including dolphin watching, The Big Wild Chesil Event for the whole family, rock pooling and an exhibition on marine giants. If I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5. You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens. Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black. The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive. The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-highstrength steels; they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds. Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs
effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too. The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses. I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road. It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees. And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm. This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Having had a few trips in Nellie now, staying overnight, we realised that for any longer trips we would need more space. We have spent many hours looking at awnings for campervans! All have their pros and cons and in the end we chose the Kombi Ex. It aligns parallel with the van, so when you come out of Nellie you walk into the living space. Behind that are two bedrooms, so they are out of the way and always there, which during the day can be useful for storing things you are not using so the ‘living room’ is fully available. At the front there is a covered area which means if it is slightly raining you can sit under it and still be outside, and you can leave shoes there which again are protected to some degree from the weather. I couldn’t believe it… After all those hours of looking, choosing and finally deciding, we picked up the phone only to be told, “Oh they have stopped producing those now, so we don’t have any!” If you know me, when I get determined, wild horses will not stop me, so after many phone calls we did indeed find a site which had the Kombi Ex in stock. We

Nellie, suited and booted, with Kombi now have what we wanted! Intention. Here’s a photo of Nellie all suited and booted with her new awning. There are so many local places where we can camp near to where we live. It is excellent as it means we can pick Hayden up from school on a Friday and go away for the weekend, arriving at our destination just 30 minutes, if not less, later! This gives us more time to actually enjoy ourselves, and worry much less about the traffic. Norden Farm is great. It is situated just outside of Corfe Castle. There are lots of fields, really good washing facilities, a lovely camp shop which has recently been renovated and has all you would need for a family camp. There is also a farm house and a restaurant. It is perfect. There are peacocks, farm animals and an amazing fishing pond with, we are told, 25 pound carp in it. It is free to fish for campers. I have to say my Dad would love it here. We did go fishing and Stephen did his best with Hayden, but Grandad was sorely missed and we left with no catch much to Hayden’s chagrin. We picked a fantastic weekend for weather. The sun was shining. The plot we had was just right and gave us lots of space for the
39 boys to play. We went along with Martin, a friend of ours and his two boys. Ryan, the eldest friend stayed in the tent with Hayden, whilst Stephen and I had the luxury of Nellie’s bed. Martin was in a tent with Sammy. If you are not used to the delightful sound of birds singing and the countryside sounds of the night, that amazing chorus can turn into an awful, perpetual screech. Unfortunately Martin had this problem and Sammy kept waking up too, so poor Martin did suffer a bit that night. It is a good idea for earplugs… ironically! I love the sounds of the night so didn’t have this problem and the boys in our tent slept very soundly. Saturday was a great day for games. We held our own ‘Norden Olympics’! Actually this was a very clever ploy on my part to sit along the side line and referee, basically giving orders, so that I didn’t have to run around! It must be the teacher in me… I had bought a few outdoor games especially for the occasion. It is surprising these days what you can get, for good value. Hours of fun at very little cost really. We had two teams and the boys ran around all afternoon. I wonder if this is why they ALL slept really well that night? We had a delicious meal at the farmhouse in the evening. Five hungry boys after all that exercise but I am not sure what my excuse was… There is a good variety of food, it is

The newly refurbished farm shop really well presented and the whole place is very family orientated. Having said that it would also be a lovely place to have a romantic meal for two. Very cosy. There are comfortable settees set in a snug immediately behind the restaurant where you can enjoy an aperitif or an after meal drink. Norden House is also a great location for weddings and parties. It is totally out of the way, so you can party into the wee small hours of the morning. A marquee or two can be erected in the countryside garden and photos would be idyllic. Just call and ask Matthew for details. He will be more than happy to show you around the gardens, the restaurant and the lovely guest house where you can stay. So Nellie was more than happy with her stay at Norden Farm and I know we will definitely visit again. We highly recommend the campsite, the farm shop with its local produce, the restaurant and the guest house. The owners should be very proud. They have grown from strength to strength. Beautiful bees and glorious gardens ‘Beautiful bees and glorious gardens’ is a special day of wildlife-related activities, all designed to celebrate the importance and fascination of our wonderful bees. It takes place from 10am – 4pm on 16 August, within the acclaimed naturalistic setting of Wimborne’s Knoll Gardens, which is now also becoming well-known for its wildlife-friendly approach to gardening. Amongst the many experts on the day you’ll be able to join a bee walk with Jane Adams, founder of the national Garden Bioblitz, meet up with bee monitor and naturalist Dr Richard Comont of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and join in with bee-related activities including making bee houses and beeswax candles. The East Dorset Beekeepers Association will be displaying a virtual hive and selling local honey so you can find out just how the honey you eat is made and there will also be the opportunity to discover the best plants to attract and feed bees in your own garden. Around 250 species of bee can be found in Britain. Of these, twentyfour are bumblebees, just one is the honeybee and the rest are solitary bees. All are important pollinators and many are in decline and need our help. This special event, Beautiful bees and glorious gardens, is being run by the Knoll Gardens Foundation to help you tell a mason bee from a tree bee, and a cuckoo bumblebee from a honeybee, give you some ideas to use in your own garden and open your eyes to the wonderful world of bees.
Knoll’s owner, Neil Lucas said, “The Knoll Gardens Foundation is all about promoting the sustainable gardening practices we use here at Knoll to help others support wildlife in their own gardens. Through our research and education programmes we aim to show how easy it can be to attract and retain wildlife – and have a beautiful garden at the same time. You will nearly always get more flowers for longer if you can spend some time regularly ‘dead-heading’. That means removing faded flowers to stimulate the development of more flowers, and of new shoots on shrubs and roses.

When the seed capsules turn brown and start to split, cut them off and spread on paper lined trays until they’re fully dry. Take out the seeds and store in small labelled envelopes until ready for sowing.
However, with many of your plants, which have probably cost a packet from the local garden centre, you may want to leave some of the flowers until seed heads are produced so that you can collect the seeds and grow your own
Try it with plants with quite large seeds to start with, like Marigolds or try Aquilega (Grandmother’s Bonnets) or Foxgloves.
They may not grow exactly the same in character and quality as the original plants but it’s great fun to watch the results of your efforts spring into life.

A range of top feefree bank accounts now offer high savings rates as lossleaders to get you to switch to them – such as TSB for up to £2,000 at 5%, for up to £5,000 Lloyds is 4% and for up to £20,000 (see above) Santander is 3%. Slash overdraft costs. An overdraft is a debt like any other. The key is to cut the interest so you can clear it quicker. There are two main choices… - Switch to a 0% overdraft. www.firstdirect.com offers £100 to new joiners and a £250 0% overdraft (min pay-in £1,000/mth). www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account gives a one-year no-fee overdraft (amount depends on credit score) but it only lasts a year. A few specialist credit cards offer 'money transfers', where it pays cash to your bank to clear your overdraft, then you owe it instead. The www.firstdirect.com account has smashed every customer service poll I've done, 92% rate it 'great'. New switchers get paid £100 cash, a £250 0% overdraft and a linked 6% regular saver account. The min monthly pay -in is £1,000, equivalent to paying in a £13,400 plus salary.
Despite its recent scandals, the www.cooperativebank.co.uk is still rated one of its top picks on ethics, it pays £100 to switch to it and donates £25 to one of seven charities.
- The www.halifax.co.uk Reward account gives £100 cash to switchers and pays a flat £5 (after basic rate tax) each month you're in credit. Avoid its costly overdraft though. The min pay-in's £750/mth.

DARK CHOCOLATE Method
Healthy and fun with a bit of patience chucked in the bowl...
Place margarine, syrup and sugar in a bowl and mix together. In a medium mixing bowl, in this order, add butter and then cacao butter and powdered sweetener. Bring 250ml water to a boil in a saucepan, reduce heat to low-medium and put the bowl of ingredients on top to melt down. Don’t stir the mix until you start to see some cracks in the surface of the powers or a little pool of butter in the bottom of the bowl. If you have a vita mix, then you will just melt the ingredients about 40%, take the bowl off the pot and wipe the bottom of the bowl so no water drips into your chocolate when pouring into the blender jug. Put the lid on the jug and turn on low speed and then onto high for about 5 seconds. Take the temperature (get yourself a probe thermometer off Amazon) to be sure you are not exceeding 42°c. The object here is to heat and smooth the mixture out, so you don’t want any lumps left by the time you reach 42°c. If you have a normal blender or no blender at all, then you will want to sift your powders before starting and heat the ingredients to 42°c over the double boiler. Once you have reached 42°c it’s time to temper the chocolate. If you’re using the Vitamix, transfer the chocolate to a clean, dry bowl. If using the double boiler method, wipe the bottom of the bowl and pour the mix into a new, clean, dry bowl; the residual heat from the bowl will continue to heat the chocolate otherwise. Using a flexible spatula, gently keep the chocolate moving and scrape the sides of the bowl every 30 seconds - 1 minute. That’s it, you are now in the process of tempering chocolate. Once the chocolate has reached 31.5°c or lower, you can now cast it in a mould or just pour it into a clean, dry plastic container. Tempered chocolate contracts when it sets, so it will easily come out of any mould you cast it in. Pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to set. I would suggest that you not add anything to this batch of chocolate, just leave it plain so you can get the full tempered chocolate experience. Also, if for some reason it doesn’t temper, you can try again or troubleshoot. That’s all. It may seem a little much right now, but you will get the hang of it in no time. If you make a mistake, don’t stress, it’s just chocolate. Don’t look at is as “expensive ingredients going to waste” look at it as a learning experience, a fun hobby, something that makes you happy and therefore nothing else matters! Please note, I suggest that, if you are using moulds to set your chocolate, you start with silicone, as they are easiest to use when you are learning.

Do you or anyone you know suffer with sight problems? Sight loss can happen overnight, to anyone, at any age. Fortunately, a small, local charity offers its services to anyone who may experience this: BSVI (Bournemouth Society for the Visually Impaired) is believed to be the oldest independent charity in Bournemouth, founded in 1911, helping people both within its Centre in Moordown and out in the community. Members are encouraged to actively participate in a programme of social activities including musical events, Arts & Crafts, Quizzes, Bowls, Curling, Skittles, Bingo and outings. There is also a Tuesday morning Drop in Café, Tuesday evening Archery Club (recently featured on both BBC and ITV local news programmes) and a Wednesday afternoon Cards Club. BSVI runs a Resource Centre (open Monday to Friday 10am–1pm) where specialist equipment to assist those with sight or hearing impairments can be demonstrated and purchased. The Community Services team includes a professional Counsellor providing Emotional Support for people of all ages who may be experiencing emotional, psychological or relationship difficulties arising from sight loss. This service is also offered to families and carers.
BSVI has a dedicated Support Worker who visits people at home to support them to remain living independently within the Community. A Befriending Service also assists with reading, form filling and general everyday living. Chief Exec Philip explains, ‘the BSVI ethos is to encourage people to demonstrate what they can do rather than dwelling on what they can’t! Members have said that BSVI is “the nearest thing they have got to family.” A gentleman who recently lost his sight claims “whilst I recognise you cannot give me my sight back, you have restored my dignity and self-respect.”’ BSVI couldn’t provide any of its services without its team of wonderful volunteers – if anyone has any spare time, please call us – just a few hours per week of your time could greatly enhance a visually impaired person’s life.
