They’re really rowing for funds! Dorset Blind Association are seeking teams of up to 6 people from local businesses to compete to row 10,000m per team on rowing machines in Bournemouth Square on 28th April 2016. Teams only need to spare an hour and the cost is £35 per team, with participants encouraged to raise sponsorship on top. Organisation is underway for the Dorset Blind Association Virtual Row to be held in Bournemouth on April 28th, and the charity are looking for local businesses to help raise money to support blind and partially sighted people. Last year the row raised £2,000, and ended up being a ‘battle of the banks’, with Nationwide teams snatching 1st and 2nd place from Barclays, who finished 3rd. The charity organises its Virtual Row Challenge every year, and this year’s date has been set for Thursday April 28th, in Bournemouth Square with teams taking hour slots from 9am to 6pm. This year’s participants include Vanguard Security and The Elstead Hotel. They are looking for teams of up to 6 people from local companies and businesses to sign up and take on the 10,000 metre challenge, where participants will take it in shifts to row part of the overall distance faster than their competitors. The event comes with lots of benefits for
its participants. Katy Goodship, Events fundraiser organising the Virtual row says, “It’s a really fun opportunity for teams to bond, get fit, win some great prizes, and do something great for the community all at the same time. It only costs £35 for each team to enter, and we’re asking our participants to raise as much money through sponsorship as they can, so this event could make a big difference to our work.” It’s not just businesses that are being asked to help out - individuals can do their bit on the day too, by taking part in the 250 metre challenge for a small donation of £2. There will be prizes for the fastest competitors, who will be announced after the event. Dorset Blind Association supports blind and partially-sighted people living throughout Dorset to live full and happy lives. Caring for people since 1918, the charity now helps 1,000 people every month,countywide, powered by a team of 400 trusted volunteers. They bring ongoing friendship and support, so people feel positive about what they can do, and can realise their full potential. The biggest challenge the charity faces is funding their work - with no government funding they rely completely on support from the local community and fundraising from events such as this. Talking about Wildlife...
Wildlife springs into action! When ‘proper’ spring arrives – not just the mild early winter weather that fooled some plants into blooming in December! – our local wildlife springs into action. Verges, hedgerows and woods become adorned with dainty flowers such as primroses, celandines, wood anemones and violets. A little later on the scene are the wonderful blue carpets in our ancient woodlands. Bluebells spend most of the year as bulbs underground and millions of bulbs may exist in one wood. So that they can attract the attention of pollinating insects, all of these plants flower early in the growing season, before the trees start to block out the sunlight with their fresh new leaves and before taller, more vigorous plants start to smother them. Birds are stirring too. Get up around sunrise and just open a window to hear songbirds crooning at the tops of their voices to attract a mate. Even better, make the effort to stroll through a wood at dawn to appreciate the sheer joy of the birds’ choral symphony. Of course, no spring is really complete until you have heard the calls of a chiffchaff and a cuckoo – sadly the latter is becoming much rarer these days. Frogs are also turning their thoughts to love. Enthusiastic splashing in a pool of water may signal the imminent arrival of a squidgy lump
of frogspawn. If you are lucky enough to have a pond in your own garden, or to live near a wild one, keep a watch to see when the wriggly black tadpoles emerge, usually about three weeks after the appearance of the spawn. Other good signs that spring is finally with us are the graceful flight of the yellow brimstone butterfly, the gentle buzzing of bumblebees and the competitive ‘boxing’ matches of brown hares in the fields. It’s a great time of year to be outside in the countryside because there’s so much to see and hear. Every month the solicitors and lawyers at Harold G Walker will be providing answers to your questions about the law. My ex-wife has told me that she is going to change the children’s surname. Can she do this? In order for a child’s name to be changed, everyone with parental responsibility must grant their permission for the change to take place. If the parents of the child were married at the date of the birth of the child, both automatically have parental responsibility. If the parents were not married, however, the father may still have parental responsibility. Since December 2003 if the father is named on the Birth Certificate he is also automatically granted parental responsibility.
If the father refuses to grant permission for the change of name the mother will need to make an application to the court for a Specific Issue Order under s 8 of the Children Act 1989. The mother must give detailed reasons as to why she considers the change of name necessary. The court will decide whether this is in the best interests of the child for their name to be changed. The child’s welfare is paramount to the court and therefore if they do not feel it is in the child’s best interests they will not grant an Order giving permission for the change of name. If the mother is applying for a new name for reasons that benefit her alone, therefore, it is unlikely that the court will grant the Order. If you are considering changing your child’s name, or think your ex-partner may be doing so, we would always advise seeking legal advice at the earliest opportunity to find out what steps can be taken.

We are worried about the Stamp Duty changes. We are selling the home we live in and buying a new one—also to live in. We also own a rental property which we purchased three years ago. As we will own two properties when we complete our purchase, does this mean we will now have to pay more stamp duty? It has been widely covered in the press that last year the Government announced plans to introduce a higher rate of Stamp Duty in certain circumstances. Those transactions subject to the higher rate will have to pay Stamp Duty at three percentage points above the current rate applicable to their acquisition. The Government has conducted a consultation on the proposed changes and this consultation period ended on 1st February 2016. At the time of writing this response, we are waiting for the final policy which will be confirmed in the Budget on

It appears clear that the increased rate will apply on a purchase of second or additional residential properties and buy-to-let acquisitions as well as some acquisitions by Companies. Whilst you will own an additional residential property when you complete your purchase, your transaction will not be subject to the higher rates as the property you are purchasing is replacing your main residence which is also being sold. HM Treasury has produced some guidance on their official website in the form of a flowchart which will assist you to ascertain whether your purchase will attract the higher rate. The old Mini Clubman was no oil-painting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker alright. The brand new Mini Clubman must have been breast fed at birth, because it’s far bigger than its siblings. That doesn’t mean it’s fat – no way. This car is well formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman, though. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t help sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting. But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged ‘clubdoor’, has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two ‘normal’ back doors. They make it far easier for passengers to get in and out of the car. Then there’s the barn-door boot. You’ll remember that from the last model. Well, that stays put, but now the doors can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin. To be frank, with a big load area too, the word ‘mini’ seems rather outmoded. The whole motor is 270mm longer than the five-door Hatchback, allowing for oodles
of room in the front and respectable space for two adults in the rear. The boot is about the same as a VW Golf’s, so you’ll get the family shopping in – and a toddler’s buggy. The Cooper S Clubman Auto is easily the most gratifying to drive. Out at the Mini’s media launch on the roads surrounding San Sebastian in northern Spain, the most powerful petrol drove gokart-like on the straights - just as a Mini should. It’s a shame the slightly pulpy suspension can drizzle on your chips in the corners, with body roll kicking in if you enter the twisty bits too hard. But that can be forgiven, because the Cooper S generates more than enough pull to keep you cheery. 189bhp can be squeezed from the S’ 2.0 litre turbocharged fourcylinder lump, and with the eight speed auto box, a zero to 62mph sprint in 7.1 seconds is easily achievable, finishing up with a top speed of 142mph. Even though these figures might make the car sound insatiable for fuel – it’s not. With the superb automatic gearbox you can officially get an average of 48.7mpg out of the Clubman - and the CO2 emissions are 134g/km, meaning road tax is a trifling £130 per annum. The state-of-the-art 2015 Mini is a gargantuan step-up from its forerunner, and it puts right pretty much everything that was awry. The Clubman now has more doors, better space, good looks, and it really is exciting to drive. The Cooper S version is especially guaranteed to bring a grin to the face of anyone who slips behind its wheel.

There are a raft of resolutions that you can do now even if the ‘I WANT TO BE A BETTER ME’ fervour has died down, and the impact lasts all year. Finally ditch your rubbish bank account and earn up to £150 More people complain to me about their bank than anything else, but only 2% of people switched last year. So stop moaning and start switching. So many banks want your business that they’re willing to pay you to switch – either straight cash such as £100 to move to them, or up to 5% interest on your savings. Earn cashback every time you spend and get £100s a year back Why not get paid every time you spend? You can do this with a cashback credit card. Yet, set up a direct debit to repay the card IN FULL every month, so there’s no interest cost – or it’s pointless. If you don’t fully pay it each month, it’s 22.9% representative APR. Sort out a power of attorney One in three over-65s die with dementia. Younger people can get it too, or lose faculties due to strokes, accidents and more. If you do lose your faculties, don’t assume relatives can walk into the bank and access your money – even to pay for your care. They’d need to apply to take over via the Court of Protection – this can drag on for months with fees of over £1000. The solution is getting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) while you have mental capacity, where you nominate a trusted friend or relative to take over your affairs. It only comes into effect if and when you’re no longer capable. I’m 43 and have done this myself purely as a precaution. Check your iPhone to prevent huge data use If you’ve upgraded your iPhone to iOS 9, beware. It automatically turns on ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ which means if your WiFi connection’s weak it supplements it with pricey mobile data. If you think you’ve started using data more quickly, this is likely why. To turn it off, go into Mobile Data in settings, then scroll down to turn ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ off. Urgently check if you’re owed £100s after being mis-sold AI (Sentinel) protection Are you one of 2 million people who got a letter from the “The AI Scheme”? If so, it means you were mis-sold one of its Sentinal card protection plan policies via your bank. All you need to do is fill in the form to get a refund (free template to help at www.mse.me/AI). Yet, unfortunately, many people thought the letters looked like spam and chucked them. Like Patrick who tweeted me nearly did: “Just got £313 from AI reclaim. If it wasn’t for your email I probably would have binned it.” If you think you got one, then call 0800 678 1930 to get another sent. Check if you’re due up to £212/year with the marriage tax allowance If you’re married or in a civil partnership, you may be able to get up to £212 a year more in your pocket with the new marriage allowance. It’s a way for couples to transfer a proportion of their personal allowance (the amount you can earn tax-free each tax year) between them. You’ll be eligible if: • You’re married or in a civil partnership • One of you earns £10,600 or less • The other is a basic 20% rate taxpayer • You were both born after 6 April 1935 If so, you can shift £1,060 of their allowance to the other which means you don’t pay tax on it, a gain of £212. Register at gov.uk/marriage-allowance. Haggle every time you renew a contract Whether it’s broadband, or breakdown cover, you can hack down the price with a bit of haggling. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Nellie had the privilege of listening to Hayden telling her what he did at school recently. She was so moved that she just had to tell you… Some pupils from Ferndown Middle School and West Moors Middle School listened to Chris Lubbe who is a UNICEF ambassador and former bodyguard to Nelson Mandela. He spoke to the children about his life as a child. This is the unofficial version described by Hayden who is twelve. This is what he told Nellie… “Chris started off when he was 6 years old. These white government people came to his family’s house and said you have 7 days to pack your stuff and leave or we will force you out. Chris’ family went to a shanty town, which he described as a poor town full of corrugated iron huts. His family had to build their own hut. This is where he lived for the rest of his childhood. For his 8th Birthday his mum bought a ticket for him and his mother to go on a bus. At that time he did not know much about segregation so they got to the bus stop and he saw a sign saying ‘non whites’. He didn’t know what it was all about or why that was. They went on the bus. Half way along the journey his mother, who had diabetes, got dizzy and light headed and so he asked the bus driver whether he could help. The bus driver said he would stop once they were in the city where they lived near. He did stop next to the pavement and the driver and Chris got his Mum off the bus and they found a bench. The only problem was that it was a ‘whites only’ bench. The bus driver told Chris to sit his Mum on the bench. He then had to leave as the bus had to get to its destination. Chris then saw two tall white policemen who pushed him aside. Chris told them his mother was ill and had diabetes but they threw her off the bench onto the concrete floor where she hit her head and was knocked unconscious. He
Nellie visits West Moors Middle School thought she was dead as he saw blood coming from her head and he started crying. Chris tried to stop several ambulances but then realised they were ‘whites only’ and they wouldn’t stop. Another black man managed to persuade a white lady to call a black ambulance. A group of black ladies came and asked him what the matter was. He just pointed to his mum, still crying. The ambulance arrived and took his mum to hospital with him by her side. The doctors said she wouldn’t last the night. The next morning Chris and his Dad came to the hospital and her heart was still beating but she was in a coma. She stayed like that for three months, after which she miraculously woke up and she was fine! When Chris was nine years old a black student from a university gave him and his friends the idea of posting letters to the different powers of countries. Chris wrote a letter to the Queen of England and his friends wrote letters to other world leaders. Because they lived near a dump yard they manage to sell bottles and bottles caps and get enough money for the stamps and so they posted them all. This is the same dump yard where Chris collected books which he could read as he wanted an education. With the amount he collected he opened a mini

39 library. He even had a system for lending the books, where he would write their names down when they started borrowing the book so he could keep a track of them. This was very moving and inspirational. “He actually managed to open his own mini library!” Hayden exclaimed. Some time later Chris and his Dad were walking along the pavement next to a beach and they saw a sign saying “whites only” and under that sign there was another one with a stop sign and a picture of a black dog in the middle. He asked his dad what the sign meant and his Dad said, “Guess”. Chris then said, “No black Dogs allowed.” His dad said “No… ” At this point Chris realised what it meant, it just hit him. Hayden, amazed said, “Just before he said it, It hit me too… And I thought Oh my God”. Chris then said, “They were saying black people are dogs and animals.” As his life progressed Chris started to hate apartheid more and more and so when Nelson Mandela was freed he started working as a bodyguard for him. He was very inspired by Nelson Mandela because he was in prison for 23 years. Chris even visited the place were Nelson was held prisoner, a place called Robben Island just off the coast of Cape Town. He showed him his prison cell and what he would do in the quarry. He chiselled a piece of limestone off a big rock and wrapped it up for Chris.
At West Moors Middle School Hayden told Nellie that they saw the actual piece that Nelson Mandela chiselled off. “This was really inspiring!” exalted Hayden. Due to all the limestone, Nelson’s tear ducts were damaged. Chris thought he cried a lot at first, but actually it was the damage that the dust and limestone had caused. When they were having dinner the Queen realised who Chris was and asked one of her servants to get the letter he had written so many years earlier. The servant came back and to Chris’s amazement there was his letter on a silver tray! Chris nearly started crying. The Queen then asked, “Did you get my reply?” Chris said, “No” and then realised the Government in South Africa must have blocked it. Incredible. Hayden told Nellie that his table asked Chris, “How quickly did Nelson Mandela, once he had become President, mix the ‘races’?” Hayden now wishes they had asked if there were any white people who had helped in the protests. Chris told them he went to jail twice for his protests even though they were peaceful. Many of his friend and comrades were killed by the police. Yet Chris kept doing the protests. This encouraged other countries to also protest and this is how apartheid and segregation eventually ended.” Hayden ended his recounting to Nellie by saying. “It was very, very moving and I just don’t get why whites thought they had the right to enslave the blacks and treat them like they were nothing.” Nellie could not agree more. Chris told the children to share what he told them, to others. We hope you find this as emotional and moving as we did listening to Hayden. Well done Ferndown and West Moors Middle Schools! Why I Joined a Gym It had been a nice lunch; salad leaves, quiche, potato salad, small beer and a lot of laughter. Our Fremantle hosts had done us proud. The trip of a lifetime to sunny Australia was turning into the holiday of a lifetime. Each day as it unfolded was a joy – new sights, new sounds, empty wide roads and the people so nice! Today we were in Fremantle meeting Philip and Rachel at their place for lunch, having only met them for the first time a couple of days ago. This had come about from an address given to us, before we left, by an aunt who said she knew the family from many years ago. Quite how was never lucidly explained, Aunties butterfly explanations went off at tangents and frankly became too difficult to follow, so we just agreed that we would look up the people at the address given; which we did, and had been warmly greeted with the words “Oh yes, hello Rodney and Diane, we were just reading the letter from Marjorie (Aunty) who said you would be coming and were composing a reply” Much conversation on who knew whom from way back was concluded when agreed it must have been respective grandfathers whose paths had crossed when both were in Australia for a spell in the sixties. Difficult to verify as grandfathers now deceased. No matter, we enjoyed the Tuesday afternoon’s spontaneous ‘getting to know you’ and were invited to lunch on Thursday to continue the family connections.
“Never mind Rodney, I’m sure you could float” as she glanced at my plump (cuddly I prefer) waistline. Well dear reader, that unintended jibe sank home, and when my wife a few days later said she would only photograph me straight on because side views were not edifying I decided I needed to do something about this lapsed Adonis situation. On returning home and journeying to the local supermarket a leaflet was spotted on a very bright yellow Smart car parked in the main Ferndown car park loudly displaying the benefits of joining a gym. The leaflet had words like; friendly, no lycra, no mirrors, no screens. They sprung from the page which together with the way the gym was shown meant it had to be worth a visit. Visit I did and all was I had hoped. I am now hooked on going every day, weekends included, with the intention of losing more than two stone over the next eighteen months. The gym is a fun place to be I find, much banter, much laughter, much exertion, much breathlessness but so much fun. I therefore thank you Rachel down there in sunny Fremantle for good naturedly, if unintentionally, pointing out that this body of three score years and ten need not be rotund and fit to float. And so it was, that following the lunch, we all wandered into the garden, the conversation touched on recent shark attacks and a need to be watchful when swimming in the warm waters of Oz. I replied that it would not be a problem as I couldn’t swim and stayed out of the sea at depth, direct contact with water deeper than my ankles was a No No. “Dangerous stuff water” I said “I’m strictly a green grass man. No one ever drowned falling into a deep long grass” I added. To which the very nice (hitherto) hostess Rachel said

More commonly referred to as ‘Lungwort’, the Pulmonaria are wonderful as they can act as both foliage and flower. Tastes so good...
LEEK AND POTATO SOUP
An easy recipe that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. It is a perfect meal for either lunch or dinner and can be served with bread or without. Enjoy as a starter or a main course and add pepper if you choose.
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 225g of potatoes (cut into cubes) 2 medium leaks (sliced) 1 onion (sliced) 1 tbsp of vegetable oil 1.2 litres of vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 150ml double cream or crème fraiche
Equipment: 2 large pans, hand blender or blender Stove: High enough to boil Method: Take a large pan and pour in the oil. Then add the onions, leeks and potatoes and cook until they have soften. Do this for 3-4 minutes. Proceed to add the vegetable stock and bring it all to the boil. Then add the seasoning and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Once you have done this whizz all of it together (you can do this either with a hand blender or a blender). Reheat all the mixture in a clean pan. You can then stir in some cream or crème fraiche. Serve with bread and butter if you choose.

On Your Plot
April showers to October fun It’s wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years!

• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear
Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

New attractions at award-winning country park East Dorset’s award-winning country park is introducing some unusual new attractions this spring. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is already home to a miniature steam railway, Go Ape, tree top trail, golf and miles of trails and cycle routes. Now the Park is adding archery and hawk walks to its busy event programme. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience, archery sessions begin on 28 March and then run on various dates until the end of August. You can book one hour slots at 9.30am, 10.30am and 4pm or just turn up between noon and 4pm on the same dates to try your hand with 10 arrows for £3.50. Go to the Moors Valley website for more information and booking. Hawk Walks is another new arrival at Moors Valley. On this intimate falconry experience you‘ll be able to enjoy the thrill of walking with free-flying Harris hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus), learning about these extraordinary birds and the ancient art of falconry as you recall the hawk to your fist. Led by a full-time falconer with over 30 year’s experience this is a unique opportunity to spend time with these astonishing birds which can fly at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour. The Park already offers three types of season ticket for visitors coming at ‘all hours’, those who are ‘early risers and late-comers’ or who like to visit during ’quiet times’.
Within these three categories people can then opt for a season ticket which applies to either one car or two cars registered at the same address, which go to the Park at the same time. From Easter, the Park is extending this option so that two cars registered at the same address can visit the Park under the same season ticket provided only one is at Moors Valley at any point in time. “Many of our visitors are regulars coming daily to walk dogs, enjoy family time after school, or attend activity programmes,” said Team Leader Clare Gronow. “With the addition of this new option we have tried to structure our Season Tickets to ensure there is an option for everyone, ensuring that the wide range of attractions and facilities at Moors Valley represent even greater value for money”. Season Tickets cost from £25 to £71 for a whole year and ticket holders also benefit from discounts at the Park and other attractions and shops in the area. Bournemouth’s “New” Museum! The Bournemouth Natural Science Society receives Museum Accreditation The Bournemouth Natural Science Society (BNSS) is thrilled to announce its successful application to the Museum Accreditation Scheme. Our Museum Committee has been working hard for a long time to get our documents in order and up to scratch and it is a credit to them that we are now an Accredited Museum. The origins of the BNSS actually started 150 years ago, with the 19th century passion for collecting natural objects. These early collections are now housed in the Society’s Victorian villa at 39 Christchurch Road which is open to the public on Tuesday mornings, between 10am and 12.30pm. From archaeology to zoology, the BNSS has something to inspire and amaze! Accreditation is granted by the Arts Council England (ACE) to museums that meet the stringent requirements imposed by their Accreditation Standard. The BNSS joins the 1,800 other museums participating in the scheme, working to manage their collections effectively for the enjoyment and benefit of users. The Museums Association’s 1998 definition of a museum is that ‘Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society’ and the BNSS is working to ensure we meet this definition.
And the work doesn’t stop here! We are continuing to catalogue and photograph our collections and make them more accessible to the community. As well as our regular Tuesday morning sessions, we also run two open days during the year. The next one is coming up on Saturday 16th April, in collaboration with the Dorset Wildlife Trust. Our Young Explorers group meets once a month and we welcome educational visits from organisations and groups of all ages! Our Accreditation status is renewed every three years to ensure we are keeping up to standard. Of course, none of this would be possible without our wonderful and dedicated volunteers and members, who give their time and enthusiasm to make the BNSS what it is. The Julian Brewery The making of beer requires a number of ingredients: access to fresh water, a source of starch (e.g. malted barley), yeast and a flavouring (e.g. hops). Wimborne has been the location for a number of breweries and this month’s article looks at the history of one of those, the Julian Brewery. The Julian Brewery started in the yard of the Three Lions Inn on the corner of Victoria Road and West Street. An 1847 tithe map lists the occupier as Joseph Piddle. By 1855 George Habgood was the occupier. A new brewery had been built by 1876. Paperwork dated a year earlier describes George Habgood as a maltster (who prepared the grain for brewing), brewer, corn, hop, wine, spirit, ale and porter merchant. By 1881 George Habgood was 60 years old, living with his wife, Jane, and three grown up children, and employing six men and a boy. The business name of George Habgood & Son was in use by 1885. An undated price list includes a Light Family Ale (especially recommended!), costing one shilling per gallon, and The Wimborne Dorset Nourishing Stout, while Bass’, Worthington’s and Guinness’ ales and stouts were also available. One of the sons, another George, continued the business after his father died at the turn of the century. The brewery, along with 17 pubs, was bought by John Groves’ Hope Brewery of Weymouth in 1915. Many of the pubs were sold on to Charles Ellis & Sons of Wimborne, and other local breweries. The brewery building was eventually demolished in 1990. The brewing industry continues in the town today.
