4 Dear Residents, Welcome to your April issue of The Ferndown & West Parley Directory! Edition 98 I hope you have a good Easter planned and will have the opportunity to take some time out. I had a great Mothering Sunday, very relaxing and just what I needed. With busy lives as we lead, it is important to have some Debbie & Stephen Corney time for ourselves. We are with our son, Hayden in fact going to the Isle of Wight for Easter with my parents to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. This time we are staying in a large house on the cliff top. We are really looking forward to it and I know Mum and Dad can’t wait! Well here in this issue of The Directory we have many local trades people and some shops who would love to help you. Why not get that decorating done? Have some artificial grass laid to cover up that unkempt lawn? Are those garage doors getting too heavy to lift? Have electric ones fitted. Assessing and meeting patients’ needs Assessing the needs of our patients ensures that they receive the right individual care, support and treatment that they need. This includes everything from an initial assessment when they first come in to hospital to continual assessments throughout their whole hospital stay. We have made a number of improvements in assessing and meeting the needs of our patients. Extended visiting We have extended the visiting times on our wards to benefit patients, families, friends and carers. We wanted to make visiting times less restrictive for those who may have previously been unable to see a friend or loved one. The extended times (varying on wards from 1.307.30pm or 2-8pm) mean patients, visitors and carers have more opportunities to liaise with doctors, nurses and therapists about their care. Families and carers are also able to assist patients at meal times if they wish to, with support from hospital staff. Protected mealtimes, aimed at ensuring patients can eat without being interrupted, still apply on hospital wards. Visitors are politely requested to respect this time unless they are supporting feeding. Alison Pressage, Senior Nurse for the Elderly Care Directorate, said: “Patients may not always understand what their treatment entails, but having someone they know on hand to offer help and encouragement will no doubt aid their recovery and improve their morale, and ensure relevant family members are involved appropriately in the recovery plans.” New plated meal service for patients Patients on our wards are now able to choose what they would like to eat just 90 minutes before it is served without the risk of their food of choice running out. Instead of food being served from catering trolleys on the wards, meals are now pre-plated in the hospital kitchens and stored in heated units before being delivered. Ellen Bull, Deputy Director of Nursing at the hospital Trust, said mealtimes are a vital part of a patient’s recovery: “Trials with the new plated meal service were well received, and we are hoping that patients will review this improvement positively, ensuring meals provided are hotter and more timely.” We have also expanded the number of volunteer meal time assistants who support our patients. Bay nursing improves patient communication Bay-based nursing stations have been introduced on all of our medical and care of the elderly wards at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital providing a greater nurse presence and reducing patient anxiety.
Bay nursing improves patient communication A nurse is allocated to each bay on the ward at the start of each shift. That nurse is responsible for the delivery of care to those patients (up to seven patients and supported by a health care assistant) for the duration of their shift. The nursing stations are stocked with materials based on the acuity and needs of the patients on that bay. This leads to more effective nursing by ensuring they have the right equipment to hand. The nurse becomes the expert on those patients in that bay and is able to support doctors’ ward rounds. They can provide more proactive, consistent and timely individual care and improved communication between staff, carers and families. Staff nurse, Bridget Bush from Ward 17, said: “It has improved communication between staff and patients and is more efficient. I love it. It is simple but effective and has made such a difference.” Did you know? • Emergency patients being admitted to our Acute Medical Unit are now seeing a consultant physician within an average of five hours of their arrival, compared to 12 hours a year ago. The improvement in times is down to extending the week day working hours of consultants by a further three hours so they can continue to visit patients up to 10pm. This means more patients are seen and assessed earlier allowing staff to prioritise treatment. • Preventing hospital acquired pressure ulcers is essential for the safety of our patients. we have launched a new prevention and management programme for all of our wards. Pressure Area Care Together (PACT) includes guidance for staff, monthly updates on the number of incidents as well as success stories, new initiatives and any training opportunities. We are providing additional wound care and pressure ulcer prevention training for ward staff and ward sisters are carrying out twice.

Relay For Life Bournemouth & East Dorset returns to Ferndown for 2014 Organisers of an exciting Bournemouth, Poole & East Dorset fundraising event are urging local people to get involved. Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life and hope which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team event. Teams of between eight to 15 people - of all ages, levels of fitness and from all walks of life - are needed to take part in the overnight fundraising festival at Ferndown Leisure Centre over the weekend of 12th – 13th July. During the Relay itself, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys a wide range of fun activities on offer. As Relay For Life is non-stop through the night, those team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents, which are set up close by. As dusk falls, the atmosphere quietens as the Candle of Hope ceremony begins. The event is the most poignant part of Relay For Life when specially made Candle of Hope bags - decorated with touching messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones - are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track. This is the second time Relay For Life has returned since its break in 2012 and once again it will take place in Ferndown. Now the committee of volunteers staging Relay For Life is looking for local support to help make it a tremendous success. Team registration is now open and we already have 12 teams joining us on the day, but we need more to be able to achieve our goal of raising a total of £250,000 since Relay started here in Ferndown. Chris Symonds volunteer Chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life Bournemouth & East Dorset said: “We would love to hear from anyone who wants to find out more about Relay For Life and how they can help. We will be
holding our next Team Night on Monday 31st March at Ferndown Leisure Centre at 7pm and anyone is welcome to come along. “It is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money for a seriously worth-while cause. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer. Taking part in Relay For Life is a positive way to be part of your local community and help make a real difference. “Cancer Research UK is dedicated to saving more lives by preventing, controlling and curing all cancers. The charity funds the work of thousands of scientists, doctors and nurses who are fighting over 200 types of cancer. “Thanks to Cancer Research UK’s work, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years and the charity’s work has been at the heart of that progress. “But despite improvements in treatment, cancer causes more than one in four of all deaths in the UK. Making dreams come true! The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation has grown from strength to strength both in the support that local people give, as well as the number of individuals the Foundation is helping. This is what impressed me the most about this wonderful charity – the diversity of help the Foundation is able to provide. It gives Mr and Mrs Thornton the opportunity to listen to what each young adult wants and then donate the funds to do, or have, exactly that. The young people present their wish to their teacher who then forwards this to the Thornton Foundation. The young adults then have an interview with Mr and Mrs Thornton who establish what is needed, the funds available and in March there is a presentation ceremony at the Ferndown Upper School. Mr and Mrs Thornton told me that this is their favourite time. They just love it! I was privileged to be invited to this celebration and talk with the fortunate students from the school afterwards. Here are some of the wishes that were granted this year… Sarah Adamson is flying out, she doesn’t know where yet, to join the Voluntary Service Organisation and do some very valuable volunteer work. Shona Pitman is off to Thailand to work at a Wild Life Rescue Centre. How exciting! She is even raising additional funds herself by organising a charity music concert at the school. Leanne Hollington wants to be a
fashion designer and has been given the money to buy a new sewing machine. The machine is the ‘real deal’ from what I gather. Emilia Caley is buying a new violin. She wants to join the Military Police and intends to start with the Military Orchestra, so happy practicing Emilia! Alice Billington is off to India for two weeks. She is really looking forward to seeing a totally different culture and help the local people. James Hazel who is already an accomplished singer and songwriter now has a new amplifier for his guitar to help him further in his life long passion. Finally I was lucky enough to speak to Kacper Jednorowicz who is 15 and has been given the funds to buy his very own iMac computer. Kacper already designs websites for a charity and wants to start his own business in this line of work. Well, he has all he needs now! Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to each and every one of you. There were many other students I did not have the opportunity to speak to and I wish all these young people the very best of luck. It was an inspiring morning, full of new dreams, new hopes and futures. You can be very proud of yourselves Peter and Linda Thornton. On their behalf I would also like to thank all of the donators to the Foundation. You are making young people very happy and their dreams come true! Debbie Corney

Let’s assume you have a viable business plan, have researched your market place, have established that there is sufficient demand for your product or service, are able to fund the operation properly and have sufficient working capital to make it happen. Now you need to decide upon the legal medium through which you will trade. You have choices: a) You can be a sole trader b) You can be a partnership c) You can form a Limited Liability Partnership and d) you can form a Limited Liability Company. There are pros and cons to all of these options but an experienced corporate solicitor can advise you on the best choice for you. Time after time, people are faced with spending more money trying to correct issues within the constitution of a company than they would have done to have the company tailor made to their requirements I know I ought to make a Will but I’ve never done one and I am nervous about how I go about it. The first thing to do is to think about what you want in your Will: 1. Decide who you want to be your Executors. These are the people who will carry out your wishes under the Will. Executors can also be beneficiaries. Make sure you agree with those you wish to appoint that they are happy to take on the task. Remember that your nearest and dearest may not wish to act as they will be coping with their grief.

New Park Keeper Joins Moors Valley Team A family trail based on the popular ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ books by Nick Butterworth is set to become the newest addition to Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood this year, offering a host of fun outdoor activities. There will even be the chance to follow in Percy’s footsteps by entering an online competition to become a Park Keeper for the day. The engaging stories revolve around the adventures of Percy, a kindhearted park keeper, and his many animal friends, including a badger, owl, fox, rabbit, hedgehog and lots of mice. They are a firm favourite with children and parents alike, and instantly recognisable from both the books and the Percy the Park Keeper animated television series. Education Ranger Tracy Standish said “We love the friendly characters in Nick’s wonderful stories and are looking forward to bringing them to life at Moors Valley. We hope this fun family trail will also help show visitors what our Rangers do to look after our Park for both people and wildlife.” The trail card, costing £2
each, will include a range of multiple choice questions and a variety of interesting activities including making an animal home, spotting the bird and finding mini-beasts. It will appeal particularly to younger children and is available daily from 5th April until 28th September 2014. The online competition will offer the chance for a family of four to be Park Keepers for the day, in addition to receiving an annual season ticket for Moors Valley and a wheelbarrow full of goodies. Talking about Wildlife...
Summer bird visitors Britain’s long coastline and mild summers make it an internationally important destination for the thousands of migrant birds making their journey from Africa to raise their young here in the summertime. Many of the migrants are insectivores, and the northern latitudes provide a better chance of finding food, with less competition and longer days.
You don’t need to be an expert bird watcher to enjoy the spectacle of spring migration, and Dorset offers many opportunities to observe the new arrivals. Brownsea Island, situated in Poole Harbour, with its diverse geography of woodland, saltmarsh, heathland and reed beds is a haven for wildlife all year round. In the summer, hundreds of nesting common and sandwich terns populate the sheltered lagoon. They are a family of small to medium sized birds that feed on fish and insects, making dramatic dives into the water to catch their prey. The migrant terns make their way to Brownsea Island in April and May, in order to nest and raise their young families within a short season, and return to their wintering grounds in August and September. They nest in colonies and produce one annual brood only, often extremely vulnerable to predators such as crows and gulls. Being able to breed in the safety of the nature reserve is often vital to the survival of the young terns.
Brownsea Island, which is owned by the National Trust, will open to the public daily from end of March, Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. In the meantime, or if you prefer to enjoy the nesting birds from the comfort of your own home, Dorset Wildlife Trust, along with Birds of Poole Harbour and National Trust manages a webcam on the Brownsea Island Lagoon. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Well I do laugh about Nellie, the Dorset Publication’s Campervan and her long black skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, but these machines really are something else! Nellie looked small and rather overshadowed by the imposing façade of these rather sinister, and very powerful looking vehicles. The Tank Museum at Bovington, is quite incredible! www.tankmuseum.org It was our fi rst visit. Harry came with us, a good friend of Hayden’s and much to Hayden’s excitement. Off we went. Boys in the back playing on DS’s and then opening the game’s cupboard (strategically placed next to the back seat), and taking out the “not allowed to say yes or no” game. It was fun listening to them trying to catch each other out, laughing away, whilst we were driving along. As there is a table in front of the back seat it so much easier to play a game, even whilst driving. So we arrived at the Tank Museum around 11.30am on Saturday morning. It was pretty busy which was great. In fact we had picked a weekend when the army

barracks were having a “Family Weekend” and the fairly new recruits were showing all their relatives where they lived, what they did on training etc. We were even treated to a demonstration in full combat uniform and a fast moving tank later in the day. This is separate to the Tank Museum, but right there in the arena just in front of the museum building.
In front of the Mark IV WW1 tank The museum itself is enormous! There are so many tanks and displays we didn’t get to see all of them, so it is a good excuse to go back. One of the first things we did was walk through a mock up of the First World War trenches. It was realistic, dark and with sound effects that really gave you a feel for how hard life was for the soldiers. We then sat in a first World War Tank, the Mark IV. This is the only place on Earth that you can go into a First World War tank, so it is pretty special! The volunteer guide was brilliant and told us about the heat, 65 degrees plus, with red hot pistons sizzling. Where was health and safety in those days? The maximum
39 speed was a mere 4 miles an hour. It was difficult to imagine being stuck in one of those, whilst being fired at constantly.
In the driving seat of the Mark IV WW1 tank! We were then educated about life during the Second World War. We even sat in an air raid shelter with full sound effects of bombs dropping nearby. What an experience! Harry did look a little apprehensive at this point, and I can well understand. Again the guide was excellent, showing us gas masks of the time and painting the picture of a life then. If any students are doing projects on war and how life was, this would be ideal. The museum gives a very realistic experience that you cannot get from books alone. On that note, there is a display of a camp in Afghanistan and this I personally found extremely moving. Again it is realistic and you really do get the feeling of how life might be for the soldiers. There is also a board full of people’s signatures who have been to Afghanistan as well as some names of soldiers who have lost their lives and are no longer with us. This was hard hitting. Hayden and Harry made their own game, which I was impressed with. They ran around trying to find the heaviest and fastest tank on display. Boys being boys made it a competition to see who could
beat the other one and find it the first. The tank museum is such a sturdy, huge place, it was totally fine for them to go off and play this game. Don’t tell Harry’s parents but I did ‘lose’ them for a few minutes and did wonder how long it may take to find them amongst the masses of tanks on display. Fortunately they wanted some sweets, so finding me was of benefit to them… Actually both were extremely well behaved and I had no worries whatsoever. So the day was enlightening, educational, impressive and emotional all at the same time. All of the Tank Museum volunteers have a wealth of data to give you and there is much to see and experience. I recommend you go, if you haven’t already. It reminds us that life is for living… We did of course have our customary picnic in Nellie with a cuppa as you can see here.

Amazing opportunities to volunteer at four Dorset Arts Festivals Four of Dorset’s most popular summer festivals are looking for Volunteer Champions to lead a field survey force. Dorchester Festival (May 22-26), B-Town Throwdown (June 6-8), b-side (September 5-14) and Inside Out Dorset (September 12-26) are each looking to recruit dedicated and enthusiastic Volunteer Champions, who’ll assist with a concerted effort to find out who comes to their festivals and why. “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to help with some of Dorset’s most popular festival events and gain some valuable skills in the process. By finding out more about our audiences we can make future events even better” says Mark Tattersall, Artistic Director of Dorchester Festival. The 11th biennial Dorchester Festival is run by Dorchester Arts will once again bring a world of music, dance, theatre, comedy and community arts to the county town. B-Town Throwdown run by Pavilion Dance South West, is a three-day hip hop event in Bournemouth, packed full of performances, masterclasses and free outdoor events. Multi media arts festival b-side is back again with its distinctive brand of specially commissioned artworks for unusual and often overlooked sites and spaces. This year’s focus is the enchanting and sometimes mysterious Isle of Portland as artists invite the public to take another look at the familiar landscape.
With events planned across Dorset, including Poole, Bournemouth, Purbeck and along the South Dorset Ridgeway, Inside Out Dorset will bring large scale, site-specific performances to the county’s landscape. Photographer of the Month! Our Photographer of the Month for April is Kay Browning. “Photography has been my hobby for over 25 years, during which time I’ve made the transition from film to digital. This was both fun and a challenge. Joining Ferndown Camera Club, which meets at the Barrington Centre,Ferndown, was the fi rst step in broadening my knowledge. Talking to people more experienced than yourself is a great way of improving. Entering club competitions is another learning curve - but you have to be prepared to accept criticism from the judges! Not always easy... Born and brought up in this general area I am used to having the Coast and New Forest close at hand. Dare I say - we’re spoilt for choice. My enthusiasm for Photography hasn’t waned, and the thrill of seeing one of your images in print whether in a calendar, book or magazine, takes some beating! April showers to October fun Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. Its wonderful to see the first fresh, local, asparagus appear for sale this month and if you’ve a bit of space spare on your plot now’s the time to plant this gourmet crop. Buy one year old crowns and plant them immediately into well drained soil. You should be able to take a small harvest next year and they’ll carry on cropping for up to 20 years! Jobs for April:Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants. Harden off indoor sowings before planting out. Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover. Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Plant an asparagus bed. Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear.
It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves. Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some
giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Yet that’s not a reason to just put money in and forget about it. Monitor rates every few months and if they drop, ditch and switch. First, clear expensive debts. The highest guaranteed return for savings comes from clearing expensive debts, starting with the highest rates. If your debts cost more than your savings earn after tax, clear what you can and you’re onto a winner. This applies to mortgages too, unless you’ve early repayment penalties. Though with a mortgage, always have a cash emergency fund in savings before clearing it. Earn 6% AER in a regular saver, PLUS free £100 The highest rate on the market is a regular savings account, but it's only available to new or existing Firstdirect.com current account customers. Though as First Direct's won every customer service poll I've ever done and currently offers £100 to switch to it, that's still an attractive proposition. Its 6% regular saver lets you put up to £300 a month away for a year and the rate's fixed. HSBC.co.uk customers get 4% AER on a similar product, while anyone can get the LeedsBuildingSociety.co.uk regular saver at 3.05% AER. While that still holds true in the main, bizarrely, these days a few bank accounts offer super-high interest rates to draw you in. The highest is Nationwide's FlexDirect (www.nationwide.co.uk/flexdirect) at 5% AER, but you only get this rate for a year, and only on balances up to £2,500. The stand-out deal's Santander 123's (www.santander.com) 3% AER on all savings if you've £3k£20k. It has a £2/month fee, but pays up to 3% cashback on bills. Up to 1.75% AER tax-free A cash Isa's just a savings account where the taxman doesn't
remove 20% or 40% of your interest. You can put £5,760 in each tax year, and it remains tax-free year after year until you withdraw it. It's a no-brainer. Don't think you're locking the cash away - the top easy access deal is from postoffice.co.uk at 1.8% AER on £100+, with two penalty-free withdrawals allowed each tax year. This allows you to transfer old Isas into it as well to boost their rates. The rate includes a bonus for 18 months, so it'll almost certainly plummet after. Lock in for up to 2.57% AER If you’re prepared to lock cash away without access, you can earn more in a fix. Yet it's worth noting many pundits predict UK rates will rise in 2015. So today's best rates may not look so good if you lock in for too long. These are the current top fixed deals for both normal savings and cash Isas. They change daily – latest rates are at mse.me/fixedsavings One-year fixed savings: United Bank 1.9% (www.ubluk.com). One-year cash Isa fix: Britannia 1.85% (britannia.co.uk) Two-year fixed savings: United Bank 2.28% (www.ubluk.com). Two-year cash Isa fix: Post Office 2.25% (www.postoffice.co.uk) Three-year fixed savings: Bank of Cyprus 2.57% (www.bankofcyprus.co.uk). Three-year cash Isa fix: Virgin Money 2.4% (virginmoney.com) Check your local credit union too Credit unions are local savings and loans co-ops. Some have deals that beat the market's best buys, such as 3% savings, 2.15% AER one-year fixes and 2.5% easy-access cash Isas. They're very localised, so whether you can get these deals depends on where you live or work. Locate ones near you at www.findyourcreditunion.co.uk. 1.5% AER standard easy access savings If you’ve any left, the final option's a normal easy access savings account. The top payers are www.tescobank.com and www.icicibank.co.uk at 1.5% AER, although Tesco's account includes a bonus rate for the first year, so it's likely to plummet afterwards. If you’ve big cash, as you’re only protected up to £85,000 per institution, split the cash into different institutions. If you're prepared to up the risk a little, it's worth looking at peer-to-peer savings, which can pay up to 6%. Here your money's lent to someone who wants to borrow it, via online financial matchmakers such as zopa.com, fundingcircle.com and ratesetter.com. Tastes so good... SLOW COOKED CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA
One of the many great advantages of the slow cooker is that there’s no need to marinate dishes that normally require it. This gentle lengthy cook enables flavors to develop and mingle together naturally during the lengthy cook. This is wonderful to come back to after a hard day at work or play. Ingredients:
Equipment: Processor
4 chicken breasts, cubed 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 teaspoons garam masala 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 can plum peeled tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato puree 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped ( garnish)
Method: In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil. Process until you achieve a paste. Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture. Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes. Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top. Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander. Who’s got the VI Factor? Professional standard local youth choir due to start its auditions. An ambitious Dorset youth choir with sights set on professional performances is holding X Factor style auditions on the 17th May 2014 in Wimborne and Ferndown. Directed by a leading vocalist with West End, global and TV experience, local children, if picked, will sing their way to professional stages and CD releases. Aimed at children 11-18 years old, Vocal Impact is a not-forprofit company with a vision for uniting our young through song, music and ambition. With solidarity at its core, the choir will be an inclusive and driven environment with a common goal – to be the best, and to have fun. Founder of Vocal Impact, Samuel Adams, says: “This is more than a local youth choir – it’s a local youth choir with a go-get-‘em attitude. We want to discover our local talent and bring them together to create a professional standard choir the whole community can be proud of.”
Speaking of our young people, he added: “We want to bring a sense of purpose and pride to our young; a sense of comradeship and solidarity. And because the choir will be run by passionate and professional adults, we want to bring the generations together in a positive and mutual environment.” Whether candidates are into rock, pop or classical, Bach or Beyoncé, all are welcome. Its Tough Mudder Time -
raising £5,000 for Harrison!!! This year we’ve set ourselves a challenging fund raising target of £5,000 - and Jon and I are running a ‘Tough Mudder’ race on 27 April in order to try and achieve this. So why £5,000 you might ask? With not being able to walk, Harrison is completely wheelchair bound (you can see him in his current chair in the photo below with his older brother Reece at the football) but it’s now becoming an essential requirement for him and us to get a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) in order to make life better. One main reason for this is that he’s now out growing his collapsable wheelchair (seen in the picture) and will therefore need be in one that he’ll stay in when travelling very soon. Furthermore it’s about his dignity. Harrison is now 5 and he just doesn’t want to be carried in and out of the car each and every time - what 5 year old would! Unfortunately a WAV is one of things we can obtain little financial grant or support towards and typically, the cost of what we require is far more than any normal family car or vehicle, so the amount we’re looking to raise will simply go some way towards it. With so many kind friends and family having raising money for Harrison’s Fund over the last year or so, some are even doing so as we speak helping us towards this target.....Jon and I thought it now time to step up to the plate ourselves. For those that might not know, a ‘Tough Mudder’ is a 12-mile run (so almost a half marathon!), which also involves mud, hills, swamps, ice, electric shocks, monkey bars and all sorts of other obstacles along the way too (about 30 in all)!!!! Described as a ‘hardcore 12 mile-long obstacle course designed by the Special Forces
to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie’, to say it’s ‘tough’ is an under statement!
