A man of experience on the merger Robert Talbot, Poole Hospital’s Medical Director and experienced surgeon, explains how the proposed merger of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital NHS foundation trusts will provide even better healthcare in Dorset. “Should the merger go ahead, we will not only sustain vital services for patients but provide even better care. There are increasing expectations for consultantled care, seven days a week, which are not sustainable on both sites. The merger will allow us to unify or centralise some services that we currently duplicate, while providing as muc h as we can on both sites so that patients don’t have to travel unnecessarily. “We want to provide the best emergency care to patients with urgent surgical problems, by giving the surgeons sufficient dedicated time, and the necessary support services, to treat patients with an acute surgical need at any time of day or night. There is good evidence that patients have a better outcome after some complex operations if their team carries out the procedure frequently.

Environmental Issues are at the Forefront of Schools Competition Over 1000 schoolchildren in the Poole, Wimborne and Ferndown area have now been invited to participate in the Young Environmentalist Challenge Competition being organised by the Ferndown Rotary Club. The aim of the Challenge is to give local schoolchildren and students the opportunity of participating in an active learning experience through a process of investigative research, either at school or at home during the Easter holidays. The response so far has been very encouraging, says organiser, Gerry Clarke: “We’ve now spoken to over 1200 pupils in the last couple of weeks and there is a great deal of interest in the Competition from all age groups. The younger children are being asked to use their creative skills in designing a sustainable wildlife garden and older pupils are writing essays and preparing Powerpoint presentations about environmental issues.” On offer are some exciting prizes too! A Kindle Fire m i n i ta b l et P C a n d a variety of items chosen to encourage wildlife to visit school gardens. The
overall winner will also be invited to participate in an exchange visit with the winning student from a similar competition organised by the Rotary Club of Dublin North. The competition starts this week and entries must be submitted by the 22nd April. Judging will take place in May and the winners will be announced at a special Awards Ceremony at the Cobham’s Sports and Social Club on 15th June which will be in the style of the BAFTAs or Hollywood Oscars. The ceremony will be followed by an informal Caribbean evening with b u ffet an d steel band. Tickets will be available from the Ferndown Rotary Club.

Apex Care opens new town centre premises in Andover

n Tuesday 12th March, the directors of Apex Care Malcolm and Liz Patrick welcomed the Mayor of Test Valley, Mrs Dorothy Baverstock, to declare the new Andover premises officially open. Apex Care has been providing domiciliary care in the Andover
area for some years now, and have recently moved to the new office in East Street to make space for training facilities for their growing number of staff, enabling them to keep care provision up to date with regulatory requirements, and to make the most of each care worker’s potential.

Who will get this year’s shining star award? As the weekend for Ferndown’s Relay for Life draws closer, the question as to which team will receive the Charlotte Read Shining Star Award is asked more frequently. The Charlotte Read Shining Star Award is in memory of Charlotte Read who died of cancer in February 2008 aged 18. The Award will be given at this year’s Ferndown Relay For Life to the volunteers with the greatest commitment to the event, held to raise money for the cancer care charity. Pat Read, mother to the late Charlotte, 18, who died after a five-year battle with the disease, said her daughter’s memory lived on in events like the relay. “Cancer Research weren’t able to save Charlotte, but they did help to give us five lovely years with her. I know she would be so proud of what we’re doing,” said Mrs Read. The 24 hour relay starts on 29th June 2013 at 12 noon at Ferndown leisure centre and will begin with the inspiring Survivors’ Lap of Honour. Cancer survivors will walk the first lap of the course, cheered and supported by the community. Together we celebrate life and the efforts we are all making to help beat cancer. On the day of Relay For Life Ferndown you can expect a celebratory mix of music, games, entertainment,
food, fundraising and perhaps a few surprises! Whilst the event is in full swing, members of each team will take turns to walk around the track for the duration of the Relay. All events are overnight as this marks the fact that cancer never sleeps. Teams taking part can camp at the site and live entertainment is being laid on to keep participants entertained. Talking about Wildlife...
Springtime on the heaths Springtime welcomes the appearance of many heathland species after the winter. Heathlands are a unique habitat for wildlife, and Dorset heaths rate amongst the best in Europe, providing a habitat year round for many rare and threatened species. The devastating fire on Upton Heath in 2011 destroyed thousands of animals, but thanks to the efforts of Dorset Wildlife Trust, local authorities, businesses and many volunteers, the heath is on way to recovery. To aid this, last year a small herd of Shetland and British White cattle were introduced to graze the heath, with the support of SITA Trust. Both bird watchers and reptile enthusiasts will find something on the heaths. Woodlarks, Dartford warblers and nightjars are all found there, happily flitting amongst heather and gorse. Be careful, though, as some will be building their nests on the ground in the early spring, so make sure to stay on designated paths and not disturb them. As the days get warmer, the reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are heath land specialists, not found in any other environment. The best time to see the shy sand lizard is April, when the males turn a beautiful emerald green, but only for a short period of
time. There is no shortage of denizens of the insect world, either. Both the exotic wasp spider and the green tiger beetle appear on the heathland scene in April. Heathlands are of significant environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced in the last few decades. To help preserve heaths and their vulnerable wildlife, please always make sure your dog is on a short lead between March and August. Money may be a bit tight sometimes but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. Indeed it can mean the complete opposite. Think of the times you’ve had in your life that have been great. Have they always been the ones that have involved money? Not necessarily. Read on for some simple ideas that you can do alone or with your friends and family that cost little or nothing but could bring a great deal of pleasure. Dig out some cards or board games. When did you last sit down and play draughts, or crib? Traditional games are just that - traditional because they stand the test of time. Google the rules if you don’t know how to play - there’s no excuse! Don your wellies, make a little flask of tea and go out for a good old stomp across the beach or if you’re not lucky enough to live near the coast, a local field or nature reserve. There are always places to walk. Get the wind through your hair and aim to be out for a good part of the day. You should sleep better at night too. Check out local galleries and museums. Often these are free and they can hold a good range of interesting exhibits. When the weather gets nicer, stick a tent up in your garden and ‘go camping’ for the night! Grab some pencils or paints and just draw for the pleasure of it. Even if the end result isn’t going to be put into the Tate just the act of putting pen (or brush) to paper is rather therapeutic.

It is active in the collection of swarms in the summer months and recruiting new members and nurturing them as responsible and caring protectors of our precious inheritance. The Association tries to help members by organising a programme of meetings throughout the year, including practical demonstrations in the open season at their apiary in West Moors. It also forms a platform where beekeepers can meet to discuss and follow up their common interest. The group is active on Facebook and has its own website www.edbka.org.uk both giving information on their events and how to become a Beekeeper. If you encounter a bee swarm this summer,
