Ferndown Fete on the Field 2022 The Ferndown Fete on the Field is run by the Ferndown & Parley Rotary Club in conjunction with Ferndown Town Council and has as its objective the provision of a fun event for Ferndown families whilst at the same time hoping to raise much needed funds for local good causes. Town Councillors Terry Cordery and John Baxter sit on our committee and provide invaluable help in organising the event. The Rotary Club wish to pay them particular thanks for all their efforts. Members of the Ferndown & Parley Rotary Club walk the field during the day trying to extricate monies from people to buy raffle tickets for the famed “barrow full of booze”!! All proceeds raised go in support of good causes. Known

as “the enforcers” it’s difficult to say no, and their efforts this year raised a staggering £1,225 for local charities including the local foodbank. The lucky winner of the barrow and it’s contents this year lives in Ameysford Road in Ferndown. Only 15 minutes walk from the playing field, but too far at the end of an exhausting day to push the barrow any further! Two Rotarians delivered it to her home by car much to her surprise and delight. The Rotary Club of Ferndown and Parley were delighted to see so many people at the Fete and thank all of you for your support. Bournemouth Air Festival feels the need for speed Tom Cruise may have the shades and the swagger, but Bournemouth Air Festival has the full package this Jubilee year, say festival organisers on the eve of the new Top Gun film.The Red Arrows, who have just finished their season’s training, will have a special colourful seven-aircraft formation celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The team behind the RAF Typhoon, which moves faster than the speed of sound at Mach 1.8 or 1381.08 mph – the same as the new F/A-18F Super Hornets used in Tom Cruise’s latest film – also has a classified surprise in store set to take the crowd’s breath away. If you want to become your own Maverick, head up to the STEM marquee, which will be 50 per cent bigger this year and aims to inspire the next generation of engineers with a range of exciting stalls and speakers. There will be lots of things on the ground to keep your mini-Mavericks entertained this year, with fun fair rides, trade and food stalls as displays from the RAF and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes soar overhead. Jon Weaver, festival director, said: “Top Gun may have the glamour, but we have the UK’s best free air, land and sea show right here on our awardwinning blue-flag beaches – like Slider says, there’s no points for second best.“We have some surprises up our sleeves too. With the mix of fast jets, acrobatic aircraft, parachuting teams and heritage aircraft our festival will this year give those on the ground goosebumps. “So, round up your wingmen and women, stick the date in your diary and watch this space!” Typhoon Flight Lieutenant Adam O’Hare said he looked forward to showcasing the mind-blowing display of speed, power and agility of the Typhoon aircraft. He said: “I’m delighted to say this year RAF Typhoon display team will be coming to beautiful Bournemouth. We cannot wait to see you all there!” The new 20-minute Red Arrows display is created and choreographed by Squadron Leader Tom

Bould, who is Red 1 and in his second year as Team Leader. His team will perform one particular move the ‘Double Goose’, which sounds like Maverick’s wingman in the 80s blockbuster, where the Synchro Pair fly headon towards five aircraft, then pull-up through a pyramid shape. He said: “It is with great pride and privilege the Red Arrows have opportunity to join with countless individuals and communities, across the United Kingdom and further afield, to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, by performing a display full of creativity and excitement. “The new show features lots of loops, rolls and shapes with our trademark patriotic red, white and blue trails, marking this important year and the very best of British. “Bournemouth Air Festival is certainly one of our favourite UK venues to perform at and we can’t wait to make a return!” Meanwhile up in the sky, the Merlin Mk 2 helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron (The Flying Tigers), which is the world’s most potent submarine hunting helicopter, will be doing a flypast. Out at sea, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, which is the real work horse of the Royal Navy, will be casting an impressive sight from the ocean’s horizon throughout the event. Cllr Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Vibrant Places, said: “We’ll never lose that loving feeling for our fantastic Bournemouth Air Festival! “It’s always wonderful to see families and children having a good time, either at the fun fair, at the STEM marquee, or staring in wonder at the magnificent RAF planes. “This summer it will be taking place in our Queen’s Jubilee year, so it will be extra special – we can’t wait to see you all there!”

An agent for change Why preservation of both people, and the planet, is the next venture for Amal Clooney. Amal Clooney is best known for human, not environmental, advocacy; yet it was at the Greenbuild 2018 Conference that we saw, for the ﬁrst time, a new side to the human rights lawyer. It was one that followed the conference’s mantra that we can only solve society’s ills by proper intersection of humanity and the wider environment.

Quite simply, it is not what she has committed two decades to specialising in; and yet, in a sense, that makes her interest all the more commendable. “The pursuit of human rights is one that is intrinsically linked to the pursuit of the environment, because both are equally dependent on each other,” she begins. “If we are not at one with ourselves, we are never going to move forward into the next realm which is to look after the environment. “And when climate change itself is impacting the basics of what we have… when it is leading to ﬂooding, unstable food supplies, drought, wildﬁres and hurricanes, then this, quite obviously, leads to a human crisis in the world, whereby all of these elements contribute to the increase in refugees

The Humble Bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet. The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast. Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities. Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require crosspollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant. Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some ﬂowers to bloom earlier or

later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly ﬂowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides. The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness. You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees ﬂourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted. An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge. Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit. New arrivals Also consider welcoming in ‘beneficial insects’ such as hoverflies, beetles and ladybirds, as these perfect partners will all help your bees flourish. Why not start a buzz in your community, and help nature in the process!

Encryption: Explained It’s a term that’s thrown about to denote safety, security and protection, but what do we actually know of ‘encryption’, and does it actually work? Encryption is an important privacy tool that automatically kicks in when sending sensitive, conﬁdential or personal information across the internet. How does it work? Encryption scrambles plain text, using an encryption algorithm, into a type of secret code – called ‘cipher text’ – that hackers, cybercriminals, and other online snoops can’t read, even if they intercept it before it reaches its intended recipients. Only when it reaches that end destination does the decryption process take place – with the use of a decryption key, a kind of secret code – and it is then translated back to its original form. Because each encryption key is random and unique, it’s impossible to decipher a message intercepted midway and only the intended recipient can read the intended message. What types of content are encrypted? Encryption encompasses everything from What’s App communication, text messages, running logs saved on your ﬁtness watch and, of course, banking information sent through your online account. How much information is encrypted? Vast quantities are encrypted – be that managed online, stored in the cloud, or on

servers. Encryption systems There are two main types of encryption systems: symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption. Symmetric encryption uses a single password to encrypt and decrypt data; while asymmetric encryption uses two keys for encryption and decryption - a public key, which is shared among users, encrypts the data, and a private key, which is not shared, decrypts the data. Within this, the encryption algorithm (set of rules) can be of varying strength, with a Triple DES system running encryption three times. Why everyone should be aware of encryption We all need to be smart of encryption, notably when it comes to where this is not being offered, such as on websites that don’t display a secure connection, and your browser will usually inform you of this. At the end of the day, internet

privacy concerns are real, and hacking is big business. Is it foolproof? Encryption is not a new thing – it dates back to Ancient Egypt when the famous Caesar cipher replaced one letter with another a few down the alphabet. Since then, people have tried to ﬁnd a way round encryption, and that still goes on today. Naturally, weak passwords and data breaches can still result in your information being stolen, however, digital encryption remains one of the very best digital defence tools we have, and our tech bofﬁns are working all the time to reinforce and safeguard what we do.

The Last Man to walk on the Moon Looking back 50 years to the moment Eugene Cernan boarded Apollo 17, homeward bound, in the process becoming the last person to set foot on the surface of the moon. When Eugene Cernan boarded Apollo 17 in 1972, few could have imagined the moon’s surface would remain untouched by man again for all of five decades. After all, in the three years preceding it, 10 others had made the journey and experienced the sensation of touching down on the Earth’s only natural satellite. The ability to reach an orb that had mystified people for thousands of years almost created a normalising of space travel, and from there we were supposed to look further. In fairness, we have – such is the technology today that unmanned missions can reach well beyond the confines of what human participation makes possible, yet it is with a certain level of sadness that the ultimate journey, one fantasised over by astronauts, authors, filmmakers and generations of children all across the world, is one that has been five decades without repeat.

Cernan was the commander of Apollo 17, and set off with his three-man crew to venture to the moon on December 7th. He was joined by Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans orbited above. The crew remained at the moon for 75 hours, making three moonwalks, each of around seven hours. At the end of the third, and just before the module was set to leave, Cernan dropped to one knee and etched his daughter’s initials, ‘TDC’, on the moon’s surface; and because there is no wind nor atmosphere present, those letters will likely remain there forever. The trio began the return journey on December 16th, with the trip back to Earth taking three days. They landed safely in the South Paciﬁc Ocean.

Further missions had been planned to the moon, but even before Apollo17’s departure, NASA had already cancelled Apollo 18 and 19 because of congressional cuts. There was also a feeling after the Apollo 13 emergency that NASA risked having its entire manned space program cancelled if a crew was lost on another Apollo mission. Cernan passed away in January 2017; Evans had died aged 57 in 1990. Harrison Schmitt, who from 1977 to 1983 was United States Senator from New Mexico, is the lone survivor, joining only three other men who have walked on the moon (Aldrin, Apollo 11; David Scott, Apollo 15; and Charles Duke, Apollo 16), to still live today.

Money on my mind... the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at keeping our money safe online. Staying one step ahead of the fraudsters isn’t a battle just reserved for those who patrol the internet. The unregulated nature of the world’s biggest information source means we need to take control of our own vigilance. The good news is that by following a few easy steps, you can protect yourself from the dark forces at work across the web. Firstly, when visiting a site, in the web address at the top, look for an ‘s’ after ‘http’ at the beginning of the line. The lack of an ‘s’ doesn’t directly imply you are on a scam website, but it is telling you that the

security certiﬁcate is inadequate, and you should refrain from entering personal information. Some browsers – Google Chrome being one – add a padlock icon denoting any website that is fully secure, or the web address could be shown in green. The highest form of encryption for any site will show the website name before the address, also. Mostly, ask yourself if what’s being offered is realistic. On the internet, just as in real life, if something you see online appears too good to be true – particularly if you’ve clicked on an advert or had a popup appear on your screen – it probably is. Also have a look for how well written and presented the site is. There is a very real correlation between the

trustworthiness of a site and the attention paid to spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may not surprise you to hear that few scammers are fully adept in the ﬁner workings of the English language, particularly if that site is being run many thousands of miles from the UK, and authentic marketing will almost always look professional in style and content. Furthermore, as much as Google may at times frustrate us by offering a multitude of options that are almost bewildering in number, it remains a great source for checking what we know. So if a site looks suspicious put its name into Google. If it’s a known rogue business then there’s a good chance it’s being discussed across the web. Finally, if you are purchasing online, use a credit card or trackback ﬁnancial tool, such as PayPal. That way if something does go awry, you have the security of reclaiming your money.

Next come orange and yellow dwarf stars, of which our Sun is one. Then we get blue giant stars, some a few times more massive than our Sun, others hundreds of times heavier. These really gargantuan stars are known as supergiants, or hypergiants. When stars the same size or larger than our own Sun run out of hydrogen fuel, they swell up to form a red giant star, which if placed at the centre of our solar system would have outer layers that reach to the orbit of Jupiter. A Design for Life… The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the difference between decorative and functional. The other day I found myself having a conversation about clocks, and it dawned on me how our reliance on them in the home has changed so much over the years. The reason for this is obvious – we have watches, phones, laptops, and various other timing devices scattered about our personal space. The era of having to get up and walk into another room to discover we’re late for the train, is long gone. There feels some justice in that, too. After all, the humble wall clock was, for many years, viliﬁed in its role in reminding us that we were behind schedule. It must be relieved to know that now, in 2022, it serves a new purpose – it is an aesthetic choice; it is a timeless interior addition that alludes to a tradition of sophistication and style - content, simply, to sit smugly in the background of household life, faithfully ticking

away the seconds ad inﬁnitum.

Its riling raison d’être aside, there was a time when large clocks were considered emblems of opulence; and although the clamour for small and sleeker accessories has relegated the wall clock to an afterthought, there’s a case for arguing this timeless timepiece can add an eye-catching allure to any contemporary space. The clock is, in many ways, a piece of moving, evolving art. It can exaggerate, calm or simply just sympathise with a wall. It can bring out colours and connect furniture, items and artwork in genre or era or style. Even if you’re hoping to emulate uber-minimalist interiors, an elegant or oversized wall clock can offer a break from potential

monotony while still appearing a natural extension of its surroundings and theme. Designers now treat these creations as art pieces – ditching the rounded constraints or traditional elements to drag the timing device into the present. Whichever way you look at it, wall clocks belong in a different era, though that tangible link between functional and decorative is one that we should consider across a number of objects and a number of rooms in our homes. The truth is, a good home, or house, or space, should combine the two. We need things around us that add to the feeling of being provided for us, yet at the same time we want to enjoy that elegance and beautiﬁcation. The secret to any space is ﬁnding the correct ratio between the two, and that sometimes can be easier said than done. Good luck!

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch. While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance,

garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner. Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars – but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads. Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.

The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning. Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Understanding Investments:

Trusts and Trust Registration Service deadline The deadline for registering express trusts with the Trust Registration Service (TRS) for the first time is September 1st 2022. This will include many off the shelf estate planning trusts such as gift trusts, discounted gift trusts and loan trusts that previously didn’t require registration. Existing trusts which have tax to pay (and currently complete an annual tax return) should have already registered, as the TRS is the mechanism by which trustees obtain the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) needed to submit a self-assessment return. An express trust is a trust deliberately created by a settlor, usually in writing. They may be taxable or non-taxable. The majority of trusts recommended by financial advisers for tax and estate planning will be UK express trusts as they will usually use a deed from a product provider. These will often be non-taxable as the trust investment will be in life policies, including investment bonds, which do not produce natural income (capital withdrawals of 5% or less do not count as taxable income). Such trusts must now be registered by September 1st 2022 (or 90 days after creation if later) unless they are “excluded”. They will then be provided with a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) if they are required to pay tax or a URN (Unique Reference Number) if they aren’t required to pay tax. “Excluded” trusts include pure protection policies where the only benefit is a sum assured paid out on 42

death and Will trusts, for the first two years after death.

The legal responsibility for registering falls on the trustees. They will need details of settlors, beneficiaries and provide information on the assets held within the trust. They can do this themselves or appoint an agent to complete the registration.

Art Exhibition comes to St. Peter’s Church, Bournemouth Pictures for The Beehive, the art exhibition raising funds for Diverse Abilities’ Splash Appeal, is visiting St. Peter’s Church in Bournemouth as part of a tour to showcase drawings of the people supported by the disability charity. The first showing of this exhibition in September 2021 was accompanied by an auction of donated work by acclaimed artists including Antony Gormley, Maggi Hambling, and Paula Rego. The event raised over £100,000 towards The Splash Appeal which aims to raise over £1million to build a much-needed state-of-the-art therapy pool for the adult’s supported by the charity, who currently do not have the access they need to hydrotherapy. Henrietta Young, artist and curator of the exhibition, commented: “It was a great privilege to get to know and make friends with the people at The Beehive, and the whole business of drawing and being drawn was an extraordinary experience for everyone involved in the project. We hope that people viewing the resulting work will come away with a better understanding of disability.”

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Royal Ascot! How delighted were we to be presented with four tickets to have a wonderful day out at the races. How very exciting. Who would we see? Would we meet the Queen? Very unlikely of course, but one can always have that moment of flutter in anticipation, and probably delirium… We can all dream and have delusions of grandeur. Can’t we? Then of course, the panic hit… what on earth would we wear? Oh NO, only 3 days to go and a very prestigious event to attend. We did not panic much …. honestly! Daichi, the Modern Magazines Campervan who is used to seeing us in shorts, caps, anoraks and even wellies, was eager to see what we would look like. Well, it turns out that us girls can ‘scrub up well’ if we want to. It was a Modern Magazines girl’s trip and we were going to have fun. I did go shopping but could I find anything suitable? Absolutely not. There is something about being in a rush, really wanting to get that perfect outfit, and just not finding it when the pressure is on. Have you ever found that, or is it just my aberration? Well, I found nothing… but frustration. Now Stephen my husband has always been a life-saver in these situations. It’s a good job he is patient and gets much less distressed than me (I blame it on

I felt a million dollars. Well that maybe a slight exaggeration, a few bob anyway. We were all set. A short drive to Mel’s where all four of us met and many photographs in the garden later (very self- gratifying) we drove out of the driveway to enjoy ourselves and walk with the rich and famous. On arriving, the whole town of Ascot was buzzing. Horse and carriages in all their glory slowed the traffic. We followed in gentle admiration. Ladies in wonderfully coloured dresses, hats and fascinators, teetering on very high heels, men in glorious top hats and tails ambled confidently along the pavements. It really was an incredible sight to behold. An English tradition that has stood the test of time. We saw a car with the number plate “Tom” on it and all four of us, being avid Top Gun fans, were desperately hoping it was Tom Cruise and of course we would meet him there. Girls hey! Even in our fifties (late fifties at that) the teenager in us was yearning to come out. It is a good job we can laugh, that is all I can say. We were privileged to have tickets for the Queen Anne Enclosure. So exciting. This meant

we could watch the horses circling the parade ring before and after the races. I absolutely loved it. I remember as a child, my grandfather every Saturday glued to the TV having made a bet… or two… or three. That unmistakable babble very much like the rhythm of those galloping hooves, blasting out of the tv, that only he seemed to understand and get very exhilarated about. His language was sometimes colourful too… My Mum’s brother had actually run away from home and never came back at the age of fifteen I think, to be a jockey. We never did know where he lived, though we met him a few times at weddings and funerals. So, here we were, placing a bet.. or two… or three. It just had to be done. I won a race! Totally beginners luck as we had great fun choosing a horse each, purely due to its name. Very technical and highly skilled of course. My winning horse was called Perfect Power and I believe Kate Middleton won on that one too, so I was in good company. Talking of which… yes, we saw William and Kate arrive on the famous straight mile. There was a huge cheer as we all saw them approaching. The arena was alive. This was by far the nearest I would ever get to our future King and his beautiful wife. The funny part is that my sister who came with us has an incredible photograph her husband found online, of William and Kate in their carriage with Sue, Mel and Julie right in the background. I have a bright red phone right in front of my whole

face where I was taking a video! Only my hat is there - hilarious and typical of me. I have great video though. The whole day was a fantastic success. Putting bets on the horses was quite something when you really have no idea on what you are doing. One bookie looked at me very sympathetically, patted me on the shoulder saying, “Just enjoy yourself, love”. Ever felt like a five-yearold, much later in life? It was all part of the atmosphere and the fun. The weather was very hot, but there was quite a breeze and my hat flying off at the top of the stairs with poor Julie chasing after it, and a man politely handing it back to her, was another one of those, ‘I am not quite in my usual comfort zone moments’, but all added to the spirit of the whole day. Spirit, well yes there was a lot of that consumed on this day and the gin stall was ever busy. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few top hats also fell off and several fascinators bounced to the ground. There were lots of swaying individuals as we were leaving. All well behaved though. So, I want to thank Abby sincerely for the tickets. We had the best girl’s day out and I thoroughly recommend Royal Ascot. It is a wonderful British occasion. Daichi wants to go next year, but he may need to lose some weight to fit into any suit, let alone a top hat… Where will he take us this summer I wonder? By Debbie Corney

Team 13: Olympic runners raise money for Julias House! Double Olympian marathon runner and Commonwealth Games medallist Liz Yelling has provided her support to ‘Team 13’ – a fundraising challenge initiated by Julia’s House Corporate Fundraiser, Caroline Attreed to celebrate her thirteenth year at the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity. Caroline has assembled a team of 13 top business leaders who will run 13 miles together in a bid to raise an incredible £13,000 to help local families with seriously ill children. Alongside Caroline, those taking part include James Benamor (CEO, Richmond Group & Julia’s House Ambassador), Alex Bonnet (CEO, Venaspace), Becky Harris (Finance Director, MSO Capital Ltd), Brian Parker (CEO, Britannia Parking & Julia’s House Chair), Chris Fairfax (CEO, Catalyst Property Finance), Doug Sheppard (MD, Parvalux), Iain Williams (CEO, Quick Car Finance), Kelly Black (Director, Richmond Group), Mark Nixon (Partner, Threthowans & Julia’s House Trustee), Martin McAndrew (Director, Blue Thirst), Pip Woods (MD, Rockley Watersports & Julia’s House Ambassador), Tobias Britton (MD, Globacare), Staz Stazicker (Co-Founder, Thru Dark Ltd) and Michelle Cross (PR Manager, OnBuy). Liz is such an inspirational athlete and has competed in two Olympic marathons. She was really motivational and gave us some great tips and techniques to take away and put into practice.” Liz put the fundraisers through their paces with some interval training in Poole Park, and left them with a few words of encouragement and advice: “The best thing about going into an event with a team is the support, encouragement and accountability you offer each other, I think this is so motivational, and helps you to get out on those runs, when otherwise you may not. It helps you to feel excited about race day and feeling a part of something. So encourage each other on the journey to the start line, and show interest in each other’s training journeys.” “Julia’s House has been a huge part of my life for the last 13 years,” says Caroline. “It is an amazing organisation, providing the most incredible support to local families, and I feel so privileged to be a part of it. Dorset Sunflower Trail is back for another year... Maiden Castle Farm is running a major fundraising event for the second year running supporting two important charities.

The farm will create a spectacular sunflower trail which will raise funds for the DCH Kingfisher Ward and Cherkasy Hospital in Ukraine. Half the profits generated by the trail will be donated by the farm, to be shared equally between these two chosen charities. This year organiser Hazel Hoskin is working closely with Dorchester Town Council on a range of additional events and activities in Dorchester, all based around the theme of sunflowers. Visitors will be encouraged to visit Dorchester town centre from mid July to see spectacular sunflower sculptures suspended across South Street. There will also be sunflower themed shop windows across the town as local retailers join in with the activities. Dorchester’s beautiful Borough Gardens will be a popular venue as it showcases a range of sunflower varieties which have been specially grown to highlight the beauty of these amazing flowers. The main event will happen in August at Maiden Castle Farm itself, when the sunflower crop is fully grown and in all its glory. The sunflower trail created on the farm will be a highlight for many people, especially the many thousands who visited the attraction last summer. The Main Trail will take an estimated 40 minutes but there will also be a shorter trail for any visitors with accessibility requirements. The attraction will include a photograph competition, opportunities for sundowner sessions, Pilates in the sunflowers and more to be announced. To boost the green credentials of the event, visitors will be encouraged to follow a special scenic path all the way from Dorchester’s town centre to the heart of the trail – a distance of about 1.5 miles. All this in the farm’s amazing location nestled at the foot of the historic Maiden Castle – the largest prehistoric hill fort in England. You are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy dining next

to one of the largest and most complex Iron Age Hillforts in Europe. Following your visit to the Trail, access to the Maiden Castle Hillfort (which is maintained by English Heritage) is free and further exploration is suggested for a different viewpoint of the Sunflowers and panoramic views of the Dorset Countryside. Hazel Hoskin said: “It was a fantastic seeing the thousands of people who visited the farm last year to experience the sunflowers. We heard about many examples of people making special memories there and with their support we raised a lot of money for the special care unit at DCH. With all the sunflowers in the town centre we think this year will be even better and we hope that even more people will come along and join in the excitement.” Hazel is also working with some local Schools to get families across the town growing sunflowers in their own gardens. They will use seeds collected from the sunflowers grown on Maiden Castle Farm last year. #sunflowersuperhighway Dorchester Town Council are funding the town centre sunflower sculptures and organising the sunflower shop window display competition. They are looking forward to all the colour and spectacle this will bring to the town this summer, providing even more for visitors to experience and enjoy. Yotam Ottolenghi’s Pappardelle with Rose Harissa, Black Olives and Capers Introduction I ﬁnd there is no better dish to eat in the summer evenings than pasta. Al fresco, with the late sunshine and a glass of red or white wine, I struggle to think of a better combination with which to while away those elongated evenings. ‘Pappare’ means ‘to gobble up’, in Italian, which is the destiny of this dish. I like it spicy, but the quantity of harissa can easily be reduced. Make the sauce three days ahead if you like and keep in the fridge until needed.

Ingredients (serves 4) • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (220g) • 3 tbsp Rose Harissa • 400g cherry tomatoes, halved • 55g pitted Kalamata olives, torn in half • 20g baby capers • 500g dried pappardelle pasta (or another wide, ﬂat pasta) • 15g parsley, roughly chopped

2. Add the Rose Harissa, tomatoes, olives, capers and ½ teaspoon of salt and continue to fry for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the tomatoes start to break down. Add 200ml of water and stir through.

4. Meanwhile, ﬁll a large pot with plenty of salted water and place on a high heat. Once boiling, add the pappardelle and cook according to the packet instructions, until al dente. Drain well.

3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium low, cover the pan and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the lid of the sauce and continue to cook for 4–5 minutes, until the sauce is thick and rich. Stir in 10g of the parsley and set aside.

5. Return the pasta to the pot along with the harissa sauce and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. Mix together well, then divide between four shallow bowls. Serve hot, with a spoonful of yoghurt and a ﬁnal sprinkle of parsley.

Method 1. Put the oil into a large sauté pan, for which you have a lid, and place on a medium high heat. Once hot, add the onion and fry for 8 minutes, stirring every once in a while, until soft and caramelised.

DVLA Devil As far as dealing with the DVLA is concerned, the devil is in the detail. Here are six things you need to ensure are up to scratch if you want to steer clear of potentially landing yourself in trouble with the UK’s driver and vehicle licensing authority. 1. Change of address This is the big one. If you have moved and your address no longer matches that on your licence, you must contact the DVLA immediately. Being caught with an incorrect address can lead to an instant ﬁne, and even temporary addresses must be updated. The good news is the change can be made quickly and easily online, doesn’t cost anything, and your new licence will typically be with you in a week. 2. Change of name or gender You must also inform the DVLA of a change of name or gender. You are still permitted to drive while new documents are being produced that reﬂect a change, and again the process is relatively straightforward and cost-free. 3. Change in marital status We all go through relationship changes, and if you are entering

into a marriage or exiting one – which includes being widowed – you’ll need to let the DVLA know. 4. Change of vehicle While this one seems obvious, and very often the process of changing ownership is done for you – perhaps because you’ve bought a car from a registered dealership, or because the person you have sold a car to has taken the New Keeper slip from the logbook (V5C) – it is still your responsibility to check that the change has taken place and been listed with DVLA. This is essentially for your own good - if the person you’ve sold a car to goes on to commit a

motoring offence, you run the risk of being held accountable if the vehicle remains in your name. 5. Change of vehicle usage Declaring a vehicle ‘SORN’ (Statutory Off Road Notiﬁcation), means you will not use it. You’ll save money in terms of being refunded for full months of road tax, although you will still need to pay car insurance. The penalty for driving a car that is SORN is anything up to £2,500. 6. Change in medical conditions Finally, you need to report any changes to your health. So everything from deterioration of eyesight, through to more severe conditions such as epilepsy, blackouts, fainting, as well as neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and the after-effects of a stroke, must be reported.

Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay to visit Bournemouth and Poole The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will visit our iconic coastal towns during its journey through England this summer as the full route is revealed. Birmingham 2022 is hosting the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – a journey which brings together and celebrates communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games. The Queen’s Baton Relay is set to travel the length and breadth of England for a total of 29 days, before culminating at the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on 28 July 2022. Kicking off on Thursday 2 June, the Baton will spend four days in London, coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend. The Baton will then resume the international journey before returning to England to commence a 25-day tour of the regions providing the opportunity for communities to experience the excitement of Birmingham 2022, as the 11 days of showstopping sport nears ever closer. On Monday 4 July Poole and Bournemouth will officially welcome the Baton as it continues its journey along the promenade from Poole into Bournemouth. Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Vibrant Places said: “It is a real privilege to be a part of this tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games and we are excited that Poole and Bournemouth have been selected to play a key part in the Queen’s Baton Relay through the South West this summer. We are looking forward to watching the Baton as it makes its way along the promenade of our stunning coastline. Since its inaugural appearance at the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton Relay has been a tradition for the Commonwealth Games. The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay began at Buckingham Palace on 7 October 2021, when The Queen placed Her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton and passed it to four-time Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox, who had the honour of being the first of thousands of Batonbearers to carry the Baton. Since then, the Baton has visited Commonwealth nations and territories in Europe, Africa, Oceania. It still has further destinations in the Caribbean, the Americas, and more countries in Europe, including the Home Nations consisting of five days in Scotland, four in Northern Ireland and five in Wales, where it will finish on Sunday 3 July, before returning to England in summer for the final countdown to the Commonwealth Games. Cast-iron cookware Is it worth investing in cast iron skillets and pans? They’re expensive, heavy and prone to rust, and yet there are many chefs out there who swear by cast iron cookware. Why? It’s tough as nails, to start with. Dining innovation at its core She has progressed from washing dishes in a restaurant aged 15 in her native Northern Ireland to working under Gordon Ramsay to the opening of her triple Michelin-star restaurant, Core. Clare Smyth reveals what has been a most tasteful evolution of dining excellence, and explains why simplicity is making a comeback. Clare Smyth, the 43-year-old stellar chef, who worked under Gordon Ramsay as Chef Patron at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay for four years from 2012, ﬁrst experienced the thrill of a working kitchen at her local County Antrim restaurant, aged 15. She says that while skill, craft and originality in the kitchen have proven vital, research in the early days was a key factor. “I looked at all of the great chefs and decided who I wanted to emulate. I put my head down and worked really hard; I put myself in all the best positions that I could, to become the best chef that I could be.

“By the time I had my first interview as a chef I’d been reading up on the likes of Auguste Escoffier, the legendary French figure amongst chefs and gourmets, Anton Mosimann and others – real leaders in their craft. I had researched classical sauces, and could make veal stocks, Glace de Viande; I had memorised every herb and could reel them off in the sort of way my school friends were reciting pop lyrics.” Smyth also credits her inability to recognise the prospect of failure as being a major part of how she moved her progressive, nonconfrontational brand forward so quickly. “I never used to understand the idea that I might fall short or not achieve what I set out to,” she says. “That level of

ignorance is fantastic to have, but it does change over time!” As for the future, Smyth is hungry to move forward. Core, located in London’s swanky Notting Hill, promotes elegant and informal dining with an emphasis on sustainable food. “Core has given me the chance to take the simple ideas from my past projects,” she says – something that, no doubt, also helped it become the ﬁrst new restaurant to score a perfect 10 in the decade-long history of The Good Food Guide. “The menu follows that trend of ﬂavour, precision and sustainability, and where special attention is paid to the balance of guests. We try to have the same appeal to everyone and that sense of inclusivity is the future of food in this country.”

Jubilee Fund: JTYAF Awards £34,000 to Local Schools The Trustees of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF) were delighted to make awards of £34,000 to 6 local schools in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Awards were made to the Headteachers with volunteers, students and trustees gathered to celebrate this fantastic achievement. The Jubilee Funding was made available to schools in the Ferndown area for special enrichment projects aimed at supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the children. Presenting the cheques during Mental Health Awareness Week added an important focus to these awards. Ferndown Upper School will use their award to fully fund a wall art project which will provide visual mental health support for all the students. The funding will also contribute towards the development of the student area in the Inclusion Hub for higher need SEND students. Ferndown Middle School are creating a Tranquillity Garden and their award will contribute towards the ground works and planting. The idea is to make a quiet, peaceful space for children to reflect at break and lunchtimes. The space we also be used for counselling and well-being activities to support children’s mental health. The funding will support the construction of an outdoor performance stage at Beaucroft Foundation School. It will provide a performance space for students informally at playtime, and more formally for the legendary Beaucroft talent shows. A space for outside learning and play with many benefits for the whole school community. At Ferndown First School the School Council put together their bid for funding for a Play Trail and were very busy gathering ideas and researching equipment. They will use their award to pay for the centre piece climbing frame. The importance of outside play in early years can’t be underestimated and is invaluable for a child’s development.

The JTYAF was set up in 2008 in memory of John Thornton who was killed in Afghanistan. John’s legacy lives on making a real difference to the lives of local young people. In the last 14 years scholarships and bursaries of almost £850,000 have been awarded to over 2200 young people, encouraging and inspiring them to ‘climb as high as they can dream.’ Pete Thornton Chair of the JTYAF commented. “We continue to be humbled by the support that John’s Foundation receives. Any charity is the sum of its supporters, and we are so grateful to everyone whose generosity has helped the JTYAF to continue to do its great work with young people. The pandemic has disrupted the life of every child in our community and for many this has significantly impacted their mental health. This year’s special Jubilee Fund is providing vital support with these exciting projects and will touch the lives of many children in our community. We feel it’s a fitting way to pay tribute to our Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year.

People assume that because my recipes are complex and rich in detail, they are impossible to replicate, but the truth about food is you can invest as much or as little as you like in the process, and even my recipes are based on simple concepts, so never feel afraid to try something different.

Method

Cook’s Tip To make the beurre noisette, melt unsalted butter over a gentle heat, whisking continuously until the solids turn golden brown and smell nutty. Remove from the heat, strain the butter through a coffee ﬁlter and store in the fridge. 1. To make the bath cakes, preheat the oven to 190˚C, gas mark 5. Brush the inside of a 9-hole madeleine mould with some of the beurre noisette and set aside. 2. In the meantime, using a stand-up mixer ﬁtted with a

paddle attachment on medium speed, beat the egg and the golden syrup until thick and light in colour. Reduce the speed and sprinkle in the ﬂour, both sugars, salt, caraway seeds and baking powder, continue to mix until well combined. Slowly drizzle in the cool beurre noisette and the milk. 3. Pour the batter into the prepared madeleine moulds halfway up and place in the oven for approximately 10 minutes. Remove the tray from the oven and cool on a cooling rack.

For the chocolate crumb • 150g caster sugar • 70g white chocolate To finish • 100g Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Sauce 4. For the chocolate crumb, add the sugar and 75g water to a large pan, place over a medium high heat and allow the syrup to come up to 150˚C. 5. Now remove from the heat and add the white chocolate and continue to whisk. The chocolate will become foamy at first but keep whisking until it crystallizes. Pour the crystallized chocolate onto a tray lined with parchment and allow to cool completely, crushing any clumps once cool. 6. To finish, melt the chocolate sauce according to pack instructions, allowing it to cool slightly. Using a spatula, cover half of the Bath cakes with a layer of the chocolate sauce. Sprinkle some of the chocolate crumb on top. Chill until ready to serve.
