Passionate about connecting communities across rural Dorset with professional arts experiences, the team at Artsreach are excited to reveal their brand new Autumn Programme. Audiences can expect a high quality depth and breadth of events, with over 70 performances and a range of workshops from 31 exciting companies and performers set to take place in village halls, churches, libraries, pubs and other community spaces right across Dorset before Christmas. Music lovers can enjoy a real medley of styles and genres from both national and international musicians. Bluegrass and Country collective The Orange Circus Band kick off the autumn season, making their Artsreach debut. Bob Whitley and Lee MacKenzie combine breathtaking vocal harmonies with guitar, mandola and cello, to share the story of Magellan’s Circumnavigation. Acclaimed Belgian brothers Trio Dhoore will perform traditional Flemish tunes and original material. Artsreach continue its partnership with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, bringing the Resound and Symphonic Brass ensembles to rural venues across the County. Award-winning Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis returns with his trio. Scottish folk firebrands Talisk meld concertina, fiddle and guitar to create an original sound. Ground-breaking quartet Methera present contemporary, traditional music on cello, fiddle and viola. Acclaimed klezmer band She’Koyokh are back, and there’s the chance to join them for a Balkan dance workshop

Dorset County Show attracts thousands to Dorchester Showground this year Dorset County Show is celebrating another successful year with more than 60,000 visitors supporting the agricultural show and there was an increase of competitive class entries compared to previous years. The event took place on Saturday September 7 and Sunday September 8. People travelled from across the county and beyond to attend the annual event, organised by Dorchester Agricultural Society and which continues to soar in popularity with local families and Dorset’s agricultural community. Highlights included the first Show appearance by ex-world championship motocross rider Jason Smyth and his Adrenaline Tour, which included a performance of live jaw-dropping stunts that provided plenty of thrills from start to finish. Show attendees also had the opportunity to visit The Fabulous Food & Farming Education Area which delivered digestible information on the important role farming plays in our everyday lives, allowing children to learn while they had fun with the different interactive displays. Will Hyde, Show Secretary, said: “I am so proud to be part of a team that works relentlessly hard each year to grow our county’s leading agricultural Show and champion the best of Dorset’s agricultural scene. It takes a driving force of 300 volunteers to build the Show and without them we wouldn’t be able to come back year-on-year to deliver the diverse range of attractions that people come to expect at Dorset County Show.” The two-day event featured hundreds of competitive classes for cattle, sheep, goats
and pigs, through to homecraft, horticulture and sheep shearing. There was also a diverse schedule of rural attractions in the main ring that included scurry racing and a Grand Parade of livestock, showcasing the finest cattle from across the south west. New for 2019, the Show introduced ‘Dorchester Street’ to its trade stand offering. This dedicated trade avenue demonstrated the Show’s ongoing commitment to the local business community and gave attendees the opportunity to discover what’s available in the town throughout the year. Will Hyde added: “Thank you to everyone who continues to support the Show, and the new people that came along to find out about more about the event. Through the community’s support we’re able to evolve our offering and are already planning a bigger and better Show ahead of our 180th anniversary next year.” Next year’s Dorset County Show will take place on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 2020. Talking about Wildlife...
Return of the birds Migration is a form of adaptation, vital to survival, as the changing seasons vary climate. As autumn approaches, we will start to see migrant birds returning to the UK, completing a journey of thousands of miles. What may look like chaos to us as we witness flocks of birds pass above, is actually part of a planned and calculated flight, unique to a species. Some will take a direct route, whereas others may prefer to follow a costal course. In the South of the UK, we are lucky to be winter hosts to members of the thrush family such as fieldfares and redwings; two migrant birds that resemble eachother. Fieldfares are large and yellowbreasted, whereas Redwings can be identified by distinctive bursts of orangey-red under its wings. Returning to nest in Iceland and Scandinavia around the end of March, these birds take this time to indulge in our berry-laden hedgerows, parks and woodlands. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Meadow Nature Reserve offers an excellent opportunity to see these migrating birds with its abundance of thick hedgerows. Fieldfares are sociable birds and can be seen in flocks of over 200. Increasing numbers of migrating birds, such as the fieldfares and redwings, are being spotted in our gardens. A combination of freezing conditions and the dramatic decrease of insect populations forces

these birds to take refuge, so don’t forget to top up your bird feeders or provide mealworms, cheese and suet to help keep feathered visitors energised this autumn and winter. Also look out for geese and wading birds will arrive in September and October in their hundreds and thousands. Dark-bellied brent geese flock to southern shores in early October. The Chesil Beach Centre, over looking the Fleet Lagoon, is a great place to see these birds in action. Holes Bay, Poole Harbour is the estuary (tidal mouth) of serval rivers and is therefore another perfect place to look out for migrating birds and some fantastic flocks can be seen late in the afternoon there. Coastal areas make excellent vantage points for a keen bird watcher, or even if you’re just starting out. Tips for watching migrating birds: 1. Check tide times and take precautions with appropriate clothing. 2. Time your visits: geese are mostly likely to be seen at sunrise and sunset. 3. Keep a record of birds arriving and departing over the season. 4. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars! By Holly Toman

Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our much-loved campervan, was missed last month. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well this month he was determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. The skill of the scurry racing
Amazing final jump of the six-bar event skies and some of our wonderful fluffy white clouds. My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer, of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the atmosphere

23 at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horses speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… uh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacy gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. The end of a fantastic day
Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! have to know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not till December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking at himself admiringly, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next month I wonder! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Tastes so good...
PULLED PORK SANDWICHES
As the temperature drops, we find ourselves wanting more easy to make, comfort food. Not only is this dish simple to create is also tastes delicious. Perfect for quiet Autumn nights in.
Ingredients for 12 servings 1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slow-cooker, large bowl, forks Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Hot Foot It To Bonfire Night Firewalk Wessex Cancer Trust needs daredevils to hot foot it to Sandbanks Beach in Poole this Bonfire Night and walk over hot coals to raise money for local families living with cancer. After a full safety briefing, walkers will be led over ten metres of coals heated to 1200°F (648°C) by certified instructors UK Firewalk. Bournemouth-based drumming band, Samba Panache, will heat up the atmosphere for the evening, and in a fitting finale participants will have the opportunity to watch fireworks light up the night sky across Poole Bay after their walk. Maria Tidy, Wessex Cancer Trust’s community engagement manager, said: “This is an adrenaline-fuelled event which requires an open mind and the determination to take up the challenge. All the money raised will go directly to providing free and local support to anyone living with cancer, so we wouldn’t want anyone to get cold feet!
If you think you’re a good match for this we’d love to hear from you.” Registration is £20 per person, or £35 for a pair, with a sponsorship goal of £80.
