Wessex Cancer Trust News Update Wessex Cancer Trust Takes Next Steps In Shaping Future Of Cancer Care Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity which provides free and local support for cancer patients and their loved ones throughout Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, has taken its next steps in shaping the future of cancer care by recruiting wellbeing coordinator, Phil Warner. His role will help the charity to deliver a personalised model of care for every client and has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Linbury Trust. It comes after Wessex Cancer Trust commissioned a large piece of research into what local people needed most from cancer support. Experts heard from over 500 people who have any type of cancer at any stage; loved ones affected by cancer, and major stakeholders including local hospitals, local authorities, other charities and hospitals. The findings highlighted the importance of emotional support and demonstrated that everyone has different needs, concerns and feelings. Therefore, a unique approach to care is needed. Every client accessing the charity’s services will now have an opportunity to talk to Phil about their individual concerns and needs, who will then create a personalised support plan with them. Using this model, clients will be able to access the combination of services that suits them best. This will be remotely for now and face-to-face when its four support centres are allowed to reopen. The charity also plans to expand its support groups, workshops and courses on areas such as nutrition, sleep and wellbeing. Colette Cowan, Wessex Cancer Trust’s Head of Service Delivery, said: “We know that over 100,000 people are living with cancer in our region and that everyone’s journey through cancer is different. This requires a unique approach to care and as a local charity we have the freedom and flexibility to evolve our services. Never has that been truer than during Covid-19 when we were forced to temporarily close our four support centres. We quickly set up telephone helplines and moved services online so we can continue to provide the support people rely on. So I’m really excited that, thanks to the Linbury Trust, we’ve been able to welcome Phil to the team. His role will take the care we provide to a much deeper level and ensure

clients benefit as much as possible from their time with us. We’re still very much the charity people know and love and always promise to be welcoming, friendly and supportive - whether you’re chatting with our trained befrienders, using our Daisy Bus to get to your hospital appointment or having a complementary therapy.” Phil added: “Cancer doesn’t just affect people 9-5, so we’ll be working even harder to ensure that as many people as possible can access care, away from a clinical environment. We’ll also be able to direct our clients to other partners who we think will be able to provide more specialised care, one example being financial support.” Established in 1981, Wessex Cancer Trust provides free and local support for anyone living with cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. It operates four cancer support centres which provide a dropin service, professional counselling, complementary therapies, activities, support groups and courses. It also runs outreach services, popular Sing for Life choirs and transport on its Daisy Buses to help patients get to their hospital appointments. Since Covid-19 forced the charity to temporarily close its support centres in March 2020 it has continued to develop extensive remote support resources, enabling anyone who needs help to access services online and via telephone. In 2020, the charity had over 13,000 interactions with clients, including 1,700 counselling sessions, more than 700 therapy sessions and 2,240 check-in calls. There were almost 3,500 views of its support pages and 230 members have joined its closed Facebook support group.

With the weather showing promise of improving, what could be better than to look to our wonderful county and appreciate its beautiful skies, seascapes and landscapes? From a look at the best beaches for walking your dog to an interesting role in the Seven Years’ War, here is another handful of Dorset’s most interesting facts.

Did you know that it’s coming up to the best time of the year to see dolphins in Dorset? The UK has nearly thirty species of whales and dolphins and Dorset’s waters have seen at least ten of those species. Early spring is a great time to see these beautiful creatures and, along with the perhaps more recognisable breeds of dolphins such as the bottlenose and common dolphin, minke whales and the risso dolphin have even been seen in the area!

Did you know that Dorset played an interesting role in the Seven Years’ War? British Army General James Wolfe was best remembered for his victory at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec where his troops took the French by surprise as they launched an unexpected attack in the night. Wolfe was also renowned for his improvement of troop training and used the steep slopes of the village of Child Okeford to drill his men. 8

Bridport is known today as PHOTO: KIRSTEN RIEMER a bustling and attractive town however deep in its history lies some perhaps less appealing heritage. Much of the town in Henry VIII’s day was immersed in work for the Royal Navy and Bridport was especially useful for its ropemaking heritage which dated back to the 12th century. Among the many diﬀerent types of rope from netting to rigging was the Bridport Dagger, commonly known as the noose. With criminals from petty thieves to murders often meeting their end by the noose, the Bridport rope trade was booming.

With the weather looking to improve, why not visit one of Dorset’s many dog-friendly beaches with your four footed friend? Why not take a stroll on the lovely, despite its name, Man O’War beach, nearby Durdle Door or head over to Kimmeridge Bay? Perfect for a slightly more peaceful walk where your dog can really let oﬀ some steam, why not try Cogden Beach, often hailed as one of the county’s best kept secrets? If you are looking for a slightly more social beach, don’t forget Eype Beach. Certainly Dorset has a wonderful selection of glorious coastal walks!

Were you aware that Winston Churchill’s ancestors had origins in the pretty Dorset village of Minterne Magna? The village’s large country manor was Minterne House and in the 17th century was rented to the father of the very ﬁrst Sir Winston Churchill.

The Dorset home was kept in the family for a further two generations however the heir died without children and so the house was eventually sold to the Digby family. Interestingly though, centuries later in the 20th century the family connection would again be highlighted when Pamela Churchill Harriman, daughter of the 11th Baron Digby, married Randolph Churchill, the son of Prime Minister Winston Churchill!

Talking about Wildlife...

Win for wildlife The marsh fritillary is one of the most interesting butterflies in Dorset and is the most attractive and colourful of the fritillaries. Often considered the ‘stained glass window’ of butterflies, they have small wings but are very recognisable with a bright, intricate pattern of white, orange and black markings. The damp grassland habitat, which is their main habitat, has been lost nationally due to agricultural improvement and drainage in the landscape. However, due to careful habitat management over the last 10 years, they have been found to be thriving on one of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, Bracketts Coppice. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Living Landscapes Ecologist, Steve Masters said, “The most reliable method to record the numbers of marsh fritillaries is to count the larva webs in autumn or in spring after the winter hibernation. Eggs are laid in large batches, of up to 300, and the caterpillars aggregate in webs which can be counted relatively easily.” Marsh fritillaries prefer to hibernate in tussocks of grass as caterpillars (which are jet black in colour) and emerge in warm weather – as early as February or March, if the winter isn’t too cold. Basking in the sun as caterpillars, they will then pupate and emerge as adult butterflies on the wing in late May, early June. These remarkable butterflies have a few challenges ahead of them including their loss of habitat, but also the parasitic wasp, which can be deadly to them by laying their eggs inside the caterpillar and devouring it. Steve continues, “Their food plant is Devils 14

bit-scabious, and we have plenty of that at Bracketts Coppice. Marsh fritillaries love damp grassland, purple moor grass, and chalk, all of which we have in west Dorset. To help accommodate these butterflies we’ve adapted the management of Brackett’s Coppice slightly to ensure the amount of grazing creates the right habitat for them, providing the right structure for all stages of their life cycle. We even removed one field from the previous hay cutting regime and grazed instead, and we were delighted to see marsh fritillaries breeding in this field for the first time, as a result.” These management techniques are being used on other suitable nature reserves, and in 2019, the highest number of marsh fritillary larval webs, since monitoring began, were found on Kingcombe Meadows nature reserve in west Dorset, with 38 being counted. Mercury, Jupiter & Saturn All three planets are visible in our dawn skies but you have to be quick as they disappear in the morning light by 6.30am. Mercury is very close to Jupiter on the morning of the 5th, and all three planets and the Moon are low on the horizon on the 9th (see ﬁgure). Thereafter, Mercury is hidden by the Sun’s glare.

Welcome to the March Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include early morning planet spotting, and a beautiful meeting in the constellation Taurus of Mars, the red giant Aldebaran, our old favourite The Pleiades, and the Moon.

This month’s full moon occurs on 28th March, and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Worm, Crow and Sap Moon.

The ISS will be visible in the early morning between 3am – 6am, every day from 1st to 12th March. If you are not an early riser do not fear, as from the 18th until month end the space station is visible in our evening skies at least once between 7pm – 10pm. People are often surprised to learn that the most famous star in the sky, the North Star or Pole Star, is not the brightest star in the sky. That honour is awarded to Sirius, located in the constellation of Canis Major, ‘the big dog’. Sirius is one of the few star names derived from Ancient Greek, and means ‘glowing’ or ‘scorching’. Sirius is easy to ﬁnd using the constellation Orion as a guide. Draw a line through Orion’s belt from right to left and continue down until you reach Sirius (see ﬁgure). Orion needs to be quite high in the sky to do this as Sirius never rises very high above the horizon in UK.

Events The start of longer daylight hours commences on 20th March at the Spring Equinox. This marks the ﬁrst of two dates (the second being the Autumn Equinox) when daylight hours equal the number of night-time hours, wherever you are on Earth (equinox comes from the Latin meaning ‘equal night’). The equinoxes are the best time of year to determine the main compass point directions relative to your own home, as the Sun rises due east, sets due west, and is due south at midday. Try remembering these positions relative to a building or a tree.

Mars The red planet spends the whole month in the constellation of Taurus, and although far dimmer than at the start of the year it can still be distinguished as a bright, orange ‘star’ high in the sky towards the southwest at around 7.30pm on a clear night. Mars appears quite close to the Pleiades on the 6th, and a sensational vista is on display the night of the 18th when Mars, the Pleiades, Aldebaran (the red ‘eye of the bull’), and the Moon form a beautiful trapezoid (see ﬁgure). Take the opportunity this month to compare the colour of Mars and Aldebaran – both should show an orange-red hue. 18

“Have you lost something?” Fiona opened her kitchen window. While having her morning coffee she’d spotted an elderly gentleman in a sheepskin coat and wellington boots in the lane. He’d been peering into the ditch opposite for almost a minute. Within moments she’d pulled on her cardigan and was striding over to join him. “Can I help?” There was nothing Fiona enjoyed more than a crisis. Where others dithered she jumped in. Her husband complained that she acted first and asked questions later, but she preferred to think of herself as a problem-solver. “I can manage.” He turned and waved dismissively. “I’ve just dropped my spectacles down here, that’s all.” Fiona looked into the ditch, which bubbled with murky puddles and rotting leaves. The bank was thickly overgrown, but she could just about see a pair of glasses nestling near the bottom. “Don’t you worry, I can reach them.” She would have to climb down part of the way and hoped it wasn’t too slippery. “I’ll have them out in a jiffy.” “Reach them?” The man sounded alarmed. “I’d rather get them out myself if you don’t mind.” “We don’t want you falling in that water do we?” She smiled and patted his hand. “Not at your age.” “But I don’t see how that can happen,” he stammered. She took two steps down, and before she could steady herself she’d slid down the bank on her backside. Icy water seeped through the seat of her leggings.

She had no choice but to put her foot in the bottom of the ditch to haul herself upright. Thick mud squelched around it, sucking her deeper. She grimaced; these slippers would be ruined forever. Holding on to the grassy bank with one hand, she stretched with the other and her fingers closed around the arm of the glasses. “I’ve got them!” she laughed. They were thick with mud, but seemed undamaged. “Looks like they’re still in one piece.” “I’m pleased for you, dear,” the man said. “I’d offer you a hand up but you’re rather wet and muddy.” “I’m fine.” Her scramble back up the bank was quite undignified. She was beginning to think this man had no manners at all. She straightened herself up and held out the glasses to him. Rather than taking them he backed away. “I’ve got a tissue in my pocket,” she sighed; clearly he expected her to clean them as well. “We’ll soon get them looking good as new.” A little gratitude wouldn’t go amiss, she thought, rubbing the glasses furiously with her tissue. The grey mud just smeared around them, refusing to go anywhere. “They’ll need a proper clean when you get them home.” She carefully slid them onto the bridge of his nose. She was covered in mud, her coffee was cold, and he hadn’t once said thank you. “But apart from that they’re in good shape.” He stared at her open-mouthed. She stood back and gave them one last rub. The words ‘Bride to Be’ appeared in little pink gemstones across the top of the frames.

“Silly me,” she laughed awkwardly. “Perhaps I should have changed out of my slippers first.”

“I don’t know who these spectacles belong to,” the man said indignantly, “but they’re certainly not mine.”

“It’s really unnecessary,” he called anxiously. “I wish you’d leave it.”

“So where on earth are yours, then?” she asked, peering back into the ditch.

“I’m almost there,” she replied irritably. Honestly, she thought, he could be a little bit more grateful.

“Here, where they’ve always been.” He lifted his foot. “Stuck down my wellington boot.”

The Modern Magazines Camper Van Warning – if you are of a serious nature and very sensible, preferring to not look at the lighter side of life, with a little tongue in cheek – then this is not for you. I will not be offended if you choose to turn the pages and move on. They are merely here to make you smile and hopefully brighten up your day. Here we go… As you may know Daichi is the Modern Magazines’s (we have a new name!) Campervan and Oh my goodness has he been whining away in the garden, not being able to go out, as it is not essential, and feeling very sorry for himself. Not only that but it has been very cold! Seriously it is enough to make anyone want to shout and scream… so we decided to get creative and cheer him up! On that note, Daichi

Daichi takes his winter coat off would love to know what you have been doing to keep yourself busy recently. It does take some imagination and persistence let’s face it, but with a little intention and some inspiration we can get pretty clever at entertaining ourselves. We decided to have a picnic… in the garden, in the freezing cold weather! Yes, Daichi didn’t move from his spot, so it was all very legal. Stephen and Hayden uncovered him, from his winter blanket and lifted his ‘lid’ which creates a tent like structure inside. Daichi was stunned to see a world out there. His white grilled-teeth beamed ecstatically and he shuddered in excitement. The side opening roof was suggested to us by the company that converted Daichi from a people carrier to a fully-fledged Campervan... And what a good idea it was. We have loads of room inside to stand up and walk around… well not necessarily ‘walk around’ as the space is not that big, but certainly head room to stand up. I love it. It is really cosy. A tent on wheels. As kids, myself and a friend stayed in a tent in the garden on several occasions, so maybe I am just trying to relive my youth? I

can’t imagine that can you? The unused plastic plates and mugs, securely stacked in Daichi’s compact cupboard, with seaside huts brightly painted on them, had the moths blown off so we could have a very healthy salad. The whistling red kettle was proudly removed from its box and filled with water, to gently boil on Daichi’s gas hob. The four of us ‘huggled in’, including local resident Fi Fi the cat who is part of the family bubble, and we beamed from ear to ear as we looked out at the rather bare garden, wondering what we were really doing. Mad and British, but hey… you can’t beat a good picnic, even in February! The salad was delicious. Somehow it seemed so much more, sat outside defying the weather and not allowing the current scene to totally get us down. Do you also remember those times as a kid when you made a den and hid inside? How exciting was that!? Well, that is how this felt. Adults maybe… but we can still have some good old-fashioned fun. The whistling kettle always brings a smile to my face. I just love that sound. A sound of elation, triumph – and just a good cuppa! We had bought a small electric heater that can be plugged into the socket, especially for times like this… well not quite, as we did not predict a pandemic and months of not

Daichi makes sure we eat healthily being able to go out… But could we find this heater? No! Oh well a good scarf, a jumper and long johns and we were fine. Not a pretty sight, but no one was there to see us! Daichi has a games cupboard, so we just had to have a go. A game I never played as a youngster was “Pass the Pigs”. Do you know it? This set was given to Hayden by Stephen’s Mum and Dad as Stephen played it a lot when he was younger. We love it and I won two out of three games which made me the champion, so I love it more now… No competitive spirit here… Then of course there is the good old Snakes and Ladders. With all the computer games now, I think some young ones just don’t know what they are missing! Hayden won two straight games, making him the reigning champion for dodging snakes. All in all, we definitely made Daichi smile. As a result, we smiled a lot too! I suppose the moral of the story… if there is one… is have fun. Don’t be defeated. Do get creative. Do something simple and just enjoy it. Daichi maybe dreaming of the sea, sun and sand as well as long drives in the countryside but for the meantime let’s make the most of what we have. Let’s see if he is able to get out of the garden by the next time we see you! Have fun. By Debbie Corney

Have we lost the art of bathing? Twenty years ago, half of the adverts on TV seemed to feature a woman luxuriating in a bubble bath (usually while eating chocolate). These days, we’re more likely to grab a lightning-quick shower before we sprint out the door. A couple of years ago, my family and I moved house. Our new home needed a lot of work, but one improvement we haven’t been able to make is putting a shower in. So I started taking baths again. And while I still miss a shower, I’ve found that I love the experience of soaking in the tub. No luxury bath would be complete without at least one scented candle. Personally, I love lighting a few tea lights around the bathroom. I’m recently discovered Echo Candles (www.echocandles. co.uk). Handmade in Somerset, the soy wax candles smell gorgeous and are great value for money. My personal favourite is the Cedar and Wildflower blend. Five tea lights cost £5, or a medium jar (fifty-six hours’ burn time) is £14. I once knew someone who chose their toiletries based on the colour of the packaging. I kid you not. Everything in his bathroom had to match. I’m not suggesting you go to that extreme, but a decent-looking bathroom is much easier to relax in. Why not decant your toiletries into nicer-looking bottles? Pick up some ceramic ones next time you go shopping. Or just reuse the betterlooking plastic ones. No one but you needs to know that your designer shower gel bottle is now housing an own-brand body wash. And George Home Reactive why shouldn’t that funky gin Glaze Dispenser £5, www.george.com bottle be reused for bath oil?

Speaking of bath oil, treat yourself to a nice one. It doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m currently using Badedas, which I picked up from Superdrug for around £7. It may be old school, but it was my mum’s favourite, so makes me smile every morning. And you can’t go wrong with a good old bar of soap from Faith in Nature (£2.29 from www.faithinnature.co.uk). If you want to add an extra layer of fragrance, try a face oil. Scientia’s Dusk Elixir (£32) contains a calming blend of essential oils, including lavender, ylang ylang and frankincense, to help you relax before bed. It also soothes and hydrates skin, promotes collagen production and helps to prevent wrinkles. Prefer a morning bath? Go for the uplifting Dawn Elixir instead, see www.scientiabeauty.com. Finally, no one wants to

end their bath with a scratchy towel. If yours feels a bit worse for wear, put it on a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar and a few Christy Bath Towel in Blush, £12, www.christy.co.uk drops of essential oil. Give it a good shake afterwards to fluff up the fibres then dry it on a line or pop it in the tumble dryer.

With the seed-sowing season upon us in earnest, now is the time to buy seeds from your local garden centre or a reputable online UK seed supplier. At the same time buy some seedsowing or multipurpose compost and some small seed trays and get sowing! Heated propagators are not essential, but they will dramatically increase the range of plants you can grow. If you do use one, remove the seedlings when they appear then grow them on somewhere with plenty of natural light and, often, a fair degree of warmth. A common problem is algae covering the surface of the compost when you sow slow-germinating seeds. Using a freshly opened bag of compost and mains water reduces the chance of algae getting into the seed tray, and make sure your watering can is really clean. A thin layer of vermiculite on the surface of the compost can also help. Seeds come in an amazing array of shapes and sizes. Tiny seeds like begonias and lobelias must be more thinly spread or a congested thicket of seedlings competing for light, food, water and space that is more prone to diseases will result. Buy yourself some fine horticultural silver sand, make sure it is thoroughly dry and then mix the seed from the packet in about half a teaspoonful of sand before you sow. Play sand

used in children’s sand pits works well too. I always recommend sowing seed into compost before you wet it and then, once the seeds have been sown, water the seed tray or pot by standing it in the sink or in a tray of water, with the water about 1cm in depth. This will allow the moisture to be taken up without disturbing the seeds’ position. Prick seedlings out when they are large enough to handle, but take care. Wait until there are the two seed leaves (larger, chunkier and differently shaped from the true seedling leaves) plus a pair of true seedling leaves. With tiny seedlings I tend to transplant or prick them out in blocks, gently easing them apart slightly as I pop them into their new compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not saturated to minimise root damage. Use a small dibber (or a pencil) to carefully ease the roots out, handling the top part of the seedling by the seed leaves, never by the stem. Make sure you put the seedlings into their new home immediately and water them in from the base, so that the compost and its moisture are in close contact with the fine roots. Serves 8 Ready in 1 hr 30 mins, plus chilling and cooling INGREDIENTS • 300g ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry • Flour, for dusting • Grated zest and juice from 3 large lemons • 100g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs • 2 medium egg yolks • 150ml double cream • Lemon slices and mint leaves, to decorate TIP Allow the pastry to come to room temperature for about 30 mins before rolling out, otherwise it may crack.

This divine dessert has a crisp and buttery pastry case filled with a tangy lemon cream filling. 1. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm loose-based fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the pastry base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 mins. 2. Preheat the oven to 200C / 180C fan / gas mark 6.Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper and baking beans. Bake on the hot baking sheet in the preheated oven for 10 mins. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-10 mins until the pastry is pale golden. 3. Reduce the oven temperature to 170C / 150C fan / gas mark 3. In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon zest, sugar, eggs and egg yolks. Gradually whisk in the double cream and lemon juice. Leave the mixture to stand for 10 mins. 4. Pour the lemon mixture into the pastry case and bake for 30-40 mins until the filling is just set – it should still be a little wobbly in the centre. Leave to cool in the tin. To serve, carefully remove the tart from the tin and decorate with lemon slices and mint leaves.
