A founding member of the Tutankhamun Exhibition team retires A big change is happening at the internationally acclaimed Tutankhamun Exhibition in Dorchester this month. Daphne Main, a founding member of the exhibition team, is retiring after 31 years. Daphne has almost been a “fixture” of the Exhibition and will be remembered by past visitors from all over the world. She has been “front of house” at Tut and in charge of the Exhibition’s vibrant school and education programme. Daphne, who was born in Liverpool, had been a school teacher before joining The Tutankhamun Exhibition, shortly after it opened in Dorchester. Over the last 31 years Daphne has talked to over 350 thousand school children that have travelled to Dorchester to see the Exhibition. Many of the children have returned with their own children! The Exhibition in Dorchester was the first Tut Exhibition of its kind since the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibition held at the British Museum in 1972. The Dorchester Exhibition became the model on which all later international blockbuster exhibitions have been based. During this time Daphne has welcomed a host of famous celebrities associated with Tutankhamun to Dorchester including the nephew of Howard Carter, the discoverer of Tut’s tomb in 1922.
Over the years many international Egyptologists who have advised or been associated with the Dorchester Tut exhibition, including Nicholas Reeves and the late T.G.H. James one time Keeper of Egyptology at the British Museum, have all met Daphne. Daphne, visits Luxor in Egypt a number of times each year, and will now be able to stay as long as she likes. Tim Batty, the General Manager of the Tut exhibition, said she has become part of the exhibition. “It will feel strange without her”, he said. “We shall all miss her – it’s the end of an era”, said Michael Ridley, the founding Director of The Tutankhamun Exhibition. At a party in the evening Daphne, also known in ancient Egyptian as DaphNefer-Amun was given a calligraphic scroll on Egyptian papyrus recording that “Daph Nefer Amun will forever be part of Tut Ankh Amun and Tut Ankh Amun will forever be part of her”.

Charity Providing Free Audiobook Memberships in Dorset Whether it’s discovering a new story or revisiting a classic, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a book. Studies have shown that reading can improve wellbeing and improve relationships with others, as well as reducing the symptoms of depression or dementia.* But, when you find reading print or holding a book difficult, how can you keep reading? Audiobooks may have the answer. Listening to an audiobook removes the difficulty in decoding words, holding up a book, or turning pages, so you can relax and escape into another world. Listening Books is a national UK charity who provide an audiobook library service for anyone who finds that an illness, disability, specific learning difficulty or mental health condition affects reading print or holding books. They currently have free memberships available for anyone living in Dorset who would like to join
the service, but may not be able to cover the standard membership fees of between £20 and £45 per year. There’s no financial proof needed, but they do ask for a selfdeclaration that this cost would be a barrier to joining. Their library has over 8,000 audiobooks, including bestselling authors for all ages like J. K. Rowling, George R. R. Martin, Lee Child, David Walliams, Jojo Moyes, Jeff Kinney, and many more! Plus, they record exclusive educational titles to support the National Curriculum in their professional studios, so they aren’t available anywhere else. Audiobooks are available to download through an app available for tablets or smartphones, to stream online, or sent direct through the letterbox on MP3 CD with no postage costs or late fees. Talking about Wildlife...
Get Dorset Buzzing! This spring, Dorset Wildlife Trust is embarking on its biggest ever campaign to get over 2,000 people in Dorset doing at least one thing to help pollinators in their garden, and help Get Dorset Buzzing. But, why are we so concerned? It’s widely known that bees are in decline, yet they are arguably one of the most important insect groups on earth, helping to carry out the process of pollination which is responsible for one in three mouthfuls of food we eat, including chocolate, coffee and strawberries. But it’s not just bees that you will see flitting between flowers in your garden; butterflies, hoverflies, moths and some beetles also carry out the pollination process, so it’s important that we create much needed space for them all to thrive. One of the main reasons for the decline of bees and other pollinators is loss of habitat. Wildflower meadows used to provide prime pollinator habitat, but we’ve lost 97% of them since the 1930s. The good news is that there’s something we

can do to help. Our gardens and local green spaces are potential mini nature reserves, so if we can provide the space and the food, they will come! Dorset County Show calls for local suppliers to exhibit this September Dorset County Show organisers are encouraging local businesses to take part in ‘Dorchester Street’ at this year’s Show on Saturday 7 and Sunday September 8. The Show, which attracts an average of 60,000 visitors each year, is introducing ‘Dorchester Street’ to its 2019 offering. The dedicated trade avenue will encourage showgoers to support local businesses, as well as give them the opportunity to discover what’s available in the town throughout the year. With live music, food stalls, a licensed bar, and a half-time penalty shootout tournament there really will be something for everyone on the day! There will also be the chance to purchase a mascot opportunity for younger members of the family, which will include photos on the pitch with the teams prior to kick off. The match wouldn’t be possible without the support of Willo (John Williams) and Viv, who have signed up an impressive team of AFC Bournemouth Legends. Willo actually presented an end of season trophy to the young John Thornton and it is poignant that the family have a photo of the two of them together. Dorset Blind Association:
A century of serving the community Did you know that there are currently over 5,000 people registered as blind or partially sighted and an estimated 30,000 people living with serious sight loss in Dorset? That is the equivalent to almost 1 in every 25 people living in the county. A local charity has been working for over 100 years now to help Dorset people who have to face the challenges which arise from the disability of sight loss. Formed in 1918, the Dorset Blind Association works to help people adjust to living with serious sight loss, to still feel their life has purpose and to enable them to lead full, healthy and socially active lives in their local community, lived as independently as they chose. Support is practical, community focused and tailored to each individual person’s needs. Crucially for many, it is not time limited in any way, because for most people sight loss is sadly not curable and also people’s needs change over time. Dorset Blind Association goes about its business quietly and without fuss and regularly helps around 1,000 people each month, doing this with just a small staff team, supported by over 300 volunteers, who collectively give more than 30,000 hours of time each year. The charity’s work, and that amazing contribution from its volunteers, was recognised in 2017 by it being selected to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
Demand for the charity’s services is increasing, while local authority and health support for most visually impaired people continues to be cut, and as Dorset Blind Association receives no government or health funding for its work, it relies on support from the local community to fund its services. The Adventures of Daichi
The Dorset Publications Camper Van “Daichi, The Dashing Dude” has finally made it! The NEW Dorset Publications Campervan has travelled across barren land and rough seas to get here. All the way from Japan, just to be with us. We love him! He is pearly white and is still wearing his posh kimono. Nellie had long skirts to cover up her rather large thighs, whereas Daichi likes to think he is rather sophisticated, debonair, and has an eye for the girl vans. In fact, “The Dashing Dude” as we have nicknamed him, is a play on words as he believes he is good looking, stylish and fashionable. It is all part of his charm. He also loves to run around and have fun. So, dashing he is, and otherwise known as “Dash” to his friends. Daichi is his official Japanese name, (dai) meaning “big, great” combined with (chi) meaning “wisdom, intellect”. As Daichi is full of himself and a little over confident, this seems rather appropriate. He even speaks Japanese when we switch on his purring, seductive engine. “Ha Dor!” and other words I have yet to discover the meaning of, he expels in a rather high pitched, very cute voice. (Don’t tell him I

We hope you like reading about his exploits and antics as he whisks us to exciting places around England and particularly here on the Southern Coast. Here’s to having some family fun… Our first trip was to Portland just along the coast from Weymouth. We had never been there before, and boy were we lucky with the weather. Dash was extremely happy. So were we. We climbed all the 165 muscle tasking steps up the Portland Bill lighthouse. What views from the top! Currently there is the amazing huge magnifying lamp which shines across the English Channel to warn our ships at sea of potential danger. The lamp will soon be replaced by a more modern system of LED lights. Sad really, but times move on as we all know too well. The majestic lighthouse demanding attention on the clifftop also has that eerie foghorn sound which haunts the waves in times of fog. There have indeed been a massive 113 shipwrecks along this coast, due to its shallow reefs and the strong Portland tidal race. Daichi decided to keep his nifty wheels firmly fixed on the solid ground.

23 A meal overlooking the crystal blue sea was a well-deserved treat after all that climbing. The café was a welcome sight. We ate outside! Portland of course is famous for its Portland Stone. Dash, knowing what boys are like and having empathy with Hayden our 15 year old active teenager arranged a “Geo Cache” hunt for us to do. Geo Caching is a modern-day treasure hunt. There are hundreds of walks you can find online. Some are still free, but there is now a small charge of around £20 for the year for the keener walkers. It is a fun way to follow coordinates and eventually find a box (the treasure!). The stones enroute, carved by artists, were quite amazing. A Falling man, chairs, hearths, octopus, bear, a whale and lots more. My favourite was the mythical Portland Dog Beast, the Roy Dog. Carved by Damien Briggs, this beast has fiery eyes, one green, one red and it was said that he lived in the Cave Hole where he would drag any travellers passing by, into its watery hideout. Brrr…. It even has the eyes of its victims embedded into its stony fur. Daichi is beginning to wonder about us Brits… We love our legends don’t we. Another way to explore our incredible homeland are Treasure Trails. Again, available online to buy at just £6.99

The Roy Dog in Tout Quarry Park per walk. Daichi chose the Pirates Graveyard one for us. (Is he trying to tell us something?). This was an intriguing walk along the coast and through the graveyard with skull and crossbones engraved in the stones. Contrary to popular belief, these are not pirates’ graveyards, but just images to ward off the evil spirits in the afterlife. The cove we passed, Church Ope, was gorgeous. We would love to go back there. There are stunning views from all over Portland. It really is a fantastic place to visit. It has seen busier times, with the Naval Base and the famous 18 mile long Chesil Beach where the American troops embarked on their journey to Nazi occupied France in the second World War. My Dad aged 83 told me that he, his Mum and sister regularly travelled to Portland all the way from Hull to see his Dad who was stationed there in the Navy. He remembered a day when a German plane was flying down the coast, being fired at by our anti-aircraft guns from the beach. The exploding shells got closer and closer, until the plane dived and escaped! Today it is a gorgeous stretch of pebbled beach with crashing waves and wonderful sunsets. Daichi is ecstatic to be here with us. He thoroughly enjoyed his first trip and is very excited about where he will transport us to next… where will that be? By Debbie Corney

Talbot Village Trust supports young people in the Purbeck community Talbot Village Trust has presented Purbeck Youth and Community Foundation (PYCF) with more than £13,000 to carry out essential updates to the charity’s youth and community centre.
PYCF was started by a group of volunteers to help young people in Purbeck by managing Wareham Youth & Community Centre, as well as run weekly sessions at Corfe Castle and Wool youth clubs. The charity provides age-related evening sessions and lunchtime access for students at the nearby Purbeck School. Staff and volunteers also organise day trips and residential activities for the local community. The grant received has enabled the education room and other areas in Wareham Youth & Community Centre to undergo some essential improvements and has seen the installation of a new interactive whiteboard, overhead projector and CCTV equipment for security purposes. Joyce Spiller, fundraising and operational Trustee of PYCF, said: “Our young members have said that our club is somewhere that they feel safe, can meet with friends, make new friends, relax and enjoy themselves. We wouldn’t be able to carry on successfully running the club and providing this safe place for
the community, if it wasn’t for the grant we received from Talbot Village Trust. We are so grateful for their support.” Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust, added: “Since the youth club members are at the centre of everything PYCF does, it was imperative their ideas for the refurbishment of the education room and other areas were heard. We are thrilled that our donation has meant the centre has been able to make those ideas a reality, for all to enjoy for many years to come.” Talbot Village Trust meets biannually, and will be accepting applications for funding from both previous and new applicants in the area before the Trustees meet in spring of this year. Jobs for April :-
• Keep an eye out for late frosts and cover any vulnerable plants • Harden off indoor sowings before planting out • Start off French beans and Brussels Sprouts under cover • Fancy something a bit more exotic? Try growing some peppers and aubergines - sow this month in a greenhouse or polytunnel • Plant an asparagus bed • Earth up potatoes once the first shoots appear Now is the time for April showers and with the weather warming up all the time and some gentle rain you’ll soon be seeing lots of changes on your veggie plot. It’s a time when any indoor space, be it greenhouse, cold frame, or just window sills, is likely to be filling rapidly with young seedlings. If you are thinking of planting some of your seedlings out then don’t forget to harden them off first. You can move the pots outside each morning, bringing them in at night to gradually acclimatise them to the change. Do remember too that late frosts can still happen in April, damaging plants that are unprotected. Watch the weather forecast and if there’s any danger of frost then use fleece or cloches to protect plants where necessary. On the subject of cloches, save any empty plastic bottles that you may have. Cut the bottom off and you are left with a wonderful mini cloche to protect seedlings that are recently planted out. Push the plastic down into the soil firmly and it will keep off not only some of the chill but also any slugs that may have their eye on tasty young leaves.
Are you a fan of Halloween? Pumpkins can be quite expensive come the end of October and then there’s always the hunt for one just the right size. Why not have a go at growing one (or several!) of your own this year? Pumpkins need a long, growing season to ripen well so now is the time to start them off. There’s lots of different varieties, including some giant ones if you want something really impressive to carve. Look out on the packets for ones that are early ripening for the best chances of success. Pumpkin seeds are huge so it’s easy to sow just one to each pot. I’d sow at least 3 plants, if they all germinate and mature it’ll probably be more than you need (they can take a lot of room as they grow) but it’s better to have spare in case you loose some early on - if they all grow well you can always pass one on to a friend or neighbour and have a competition to see who gets the biggest pumpkin! You’ll need to keep your young plant inside until all risk of frost has passed. When it comes time to plant the pumpkin out it will like lots of nutrients in the soil. Dig out a large hole and put in lots of well rotted compost - or you can even plant your pumpkin straight on top of an old compost heap. They’ll bloom with wonderfully exotic looking, huge yellow flowers and it’s wise to consider removing the growing tip once three fruit have set as this will give a better chance for larger, riper, pumpkins. Support the growing fruits on a bed of straw to avoid them dropping off or becoming mushy. Are you enjoying purple spouting broccoli at the moment? You can buy summer varieties to plant now, or try Calbrese (this has the green heads) which is best planted straight into the beds where they will grow.

Naturally good... Brown butter and beer braised kale with cranberries and pecans
Ingredients for 4 2 bunches of kale 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 120ml beer of your choice 60ml chicken stock 1tbsp reduced sugar dried cranberries (this is optional) 3 tbsp. roasted chopped pecans Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
I absolutely love kale. It’s packed with flavour and nutrients and it’s incredibly quick and easy to cook. Braising kale in beer and brown butter gives the finished dish a really nice nutty flavor and the quick method of cooking ensures that the kale retains its vibrant green colour. 1. First prepare the kale by washing it and then cutting out the stem. It is important to cut out the center stem because it can be tough and chewy. Once you have removed the stems, quickly shred the kale by rolling up the leaves into a cylinder and roughly slicing them. Set to one side. 2. In a large frying pan or sauté pan place two tablespoons of butter and cook on a medium heat until starting to turn a light brown colour. At this stage quickly add the beer and chicken stock and turn up the heat to high. Bring to the boil and then add the kale. 3. Cook the kale for approximately 3 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the kale is nicely glazed. Add the chopped pecans and seasoning to taste. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with the dried cranberries. Chef’s tip: Make sure that the liquid is boiling and the heat is on high before adding the kale, you don’t want to slow cook it because it can lose its vibrant green color if it is stewed for too long.

Terracotta Warriors Museum The Terracotta Warriors Museum in Dorchester, Dorset, is one of the only museums outside China exclusively dedicated to the amazing Terracotta Warriors. All the terracotta warriors displayed in the museum have been specially made for exhibition by the technicians of the Lintong Museum Cultural Relic Workshop, Xian, China, as well as workshops of the China National Arts & Crafts Corporation, Xian. Other terracotta warriors were specially created for the display in the museum workshops of World Heritage as were the costumed figures of the First Emperor and General Meng Tian together with the reconstructions of the armour, weapons and costumes. The discovery of the terracotta warriors has gripped the imagination of people around the world. Those who have been fortunate to make the journey to the site at Xian in Shaanxi Province will never forget the experience. An experience which is now open to all who visit the museum. Complementing the display of terracotta warriors is the imposing costumed figure Qin Shi Huang di - the first emperor of China with General Meng Tian. have been worn by the Royal Guard. In addition to this a reconstruction of part of an excavation scene shows a small section of one of the pits giving an idea how the figures were gradually unearthed from the soil. A journey through Chinese history illustrated with antiquities covering two millennia takes the visitor back to the time of Qin Shi Huang di. Multimedia and audio presentations inform and entertain. There is also an Advance Guard of half-size terracotta warriors representative of the many different types of the terracotta army. The displays have been specially designed and created to tell the story of the terracotta warriors and their discovery, and to give a glimpse of the China of 2200 years ago. Some of the Warriors in the Museum have previously been displayed in major exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hampton Court and Jersey.
