The Great British Snake Off When you think of snakes, you might picture a fat boa constrictor basking beside a Brazilian river, or a king cobra rearing up from the dust of an Indian plain. Snakes seem too exotic for the often cold, wet and windy weather of the UK. But snakes are adaptable creatures, found on every continent but Antarctica. Here are the UK’s three species of snake. The biggest: grass snakes The grass snake is our longest snake, growing to well over a metre. They’re usually a greygreen colour and most easily recognised by the black and yellow collar behind the head. They have dark eyes with round pupils, whereas adders have elliptical pupils in their bright red eyes. Grass snakes can be found in areas with long grass often near water, including garden ponds. They’re excellent swimmers and regularly feed on fish, frogs, toads and newts. Grass snakes are our only egg-laying native snake. Grass snakes are not venomous. They’re very shy creatures and will quickly slither away if they are disturbed. If they don’t have an escape route, they may play dead and roll onto their back with their tongue hanging out. As a last resort, if they’re handled, they can also release a foul-smelling liquid from their vent. The most misunderstood: adder Our only venomous native snake, the adder has picked up a bad reputation and often inspires fear. Bites can occasionally be serious (and should always be immediately checked at a hospital), but they aren’t aggressive and rarely bite people. Most bites happen when a snake is handled or stood on. Adders prefer wilder habitats than grass snakes, like heaths, woodland rides, and coastal dunes. They are rarely found in gardens. They’re shorter but stockier than a grass snake, and are usually grey-brown with a distinctive

zig-zag pattern along the back. Male adders ‘dance’ to fight over females, entwining with each other and trying to wrestle the other male to the ground. Instead of laying eggs, females incubate them internally and ‘give birth’ to up to 20 live young. The rarest: smooth snake Snakes are secretive and hard to see at the best of times, but smooth snakes are so rare that very few people in the UK are likely to have seen one. They’re found across mainland Europe, but in Great Britain are only found on a few sandy heaths in southern England: in Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Devon. Smooth snakes grow up to about 70cm long, are slender and usually grey or dark brown, with dark markings along the back. The dark markings aren’t as distinct as an adder’s zigzags, and they have round pupils (compared to the adder’s elliptical pupils). Smooth snakes aren’t venomous. They catch their prey with their teeth and coil their body around it like a constrictor, most often feeding on lizards and small mammals. Alice Ashcroft

Looking a lot like a giant daisy, an aster springs forth with a starry shaped head providing colour in late summer and autumn when many of the other blooms may have already faded away. These plants can grow up to 8ft in height depending on the variety chosen so they’re a great choice for many gardens given their flexibility. Make sure that you don’t plant the annual varieties in the same place each year in order to prevent plant disease such as Aster wilt. Nature lovers take note – these flowers attract butterflies so you’ll be able to enjoy watching new wildlife too.

Of all the comedy legends that have toured the world and won hearts over the silver screen, mention the name Laurel and Hardy and fans young and old will fondly remember their characteristically slapstick routines and often repeated phrases. Did you know however, that in 1947 Laurel and Hardy themselves were warmly welcomed to Southsea? For several nights the comedic duo performed to delighted Southsea locals and stayed at the Queen’s Hotel. Perhaps Laurel and Hardy even treated themselves to a stroll along the beautiful pier and enjoyed their very own taste of Hampshire’s coastline - and fish and chips of course!

Aside from setting sail from Hampshire on her ill-fated maiden voyage, did you know that it was in Emery Down that the Titanic's captain, Edward Smith, reportedly spent his last evening on land before beginning, what was at the time, one of the most disastrous events in history? He stayed at the New Forest Inn, previously named the New Inn, in the picturesque village of Emery Down no doubt the captain enjoyed a drink or two before retiring for the night. Sadly, little did he know then what tragedies lay ahead. It would be hard to deny that King Henry VIII had a fondness for Hampshire. The great Tudor monarch loved to exude power and his navy was his pride and joy. In fact, the very heart of his navy had deep roots in the county and the king built strongholds all around to protect it at all costs. one such stronghold was Hurst Castle. An impressive structure in itself, another interesting fact is that the castle was involved in many of the country's most historic events, including the imprisonment of King Charles I, and continued to be in use as late as both world wars. Hampshire has been home to further 'royalty' than the recognised British monarchy? Although not born in the county, Eliza James became known as the Queen of Watercress in the early 1900s when she began her watercress growing business. Although the ancient art of watercress growing was not new to the county, this queen’s business thrived and soon she supplied to all outlets from shops and markets to hotels and restaurants until she had become so popular that everyone in London sought her watercress. Amazingly, despite a tragic life in which she survived murder attempts at the hands of her husband, Eliza James’ watercress business became the largest in Europe and she became forever remembered as the Watercress Queen! Did you know that Hampshire is home to be what is considered by tree experts as one of the most important trees in the entire country? Although Hampshire boasts many impressive natural gems, Farringdon Yew Tree dates back at least three thousand years and as well as being a beautiful insight into Hampshire's natural history, it has fired and inspired many of the literary minds that flock to the county!"

The Hampshire Publications Camper Van For anyone new to these pages, Daichi, The Dashing Dude is our beloved Campervan. He is fun loving and adventurous and passionate about steering us to new places, to take us out as a family, exploring the coast and the countryside. He loves England and drove all the way from Japan to be with us, where he had a new suit fitted including fridge, cupboards, table, bed and a great new roof that lifts perfectly, giving us plenty of headroom inside. This month he was shaking with excitement. Daichi had heard of the ‘Mummy’s Curse’, so when Stephen’s sister suggested we meet at Beacon Hill and celebrate Grandpa’s Birthday with a walk and a picnic, Daichi (and us)
The grave of the 5th Earl of Carnavon
Socially distanced group selfie... complete with lockdown hair! was raring to go. Beacon Hill, near the village of Burghclere and overlooking the glorious Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey, houses the grave of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who died in 1923. Highclere Castle has belonged to this family since 1679. The 5th Earl, an enthusiastic Egyptologist, is famous for his sponsorship which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Howard Carter exposed the tomb which had lain silent for nearly 3000 years and was adorned with rich Egyptian artifacts. Carnarvon must have been delighted after years of donating, but the story goes that on arriving in Cairo he was fatally bitten by a mosquito, which became infected following a razer cut. Carnarvon died of blood poisoning. Thus started the famous and chilling tale of “The Mummy’s Curse” which has enraptured many a movie since. What do you think? To be fair Howard Carter lived until 1939 and died at the age of 64, but we rather like a good, scary tale. Daichi whole heartedly believes it. He loves those movies too!

23 Beacon Hill itself is pretty steep. Daichi took one look and gracefully declined, deciding he was better suited to the car park. I was pleased that during the Lockdown we had done many a walk around the forest, which meant I was much fitter than usual. Stephen’s sister and father are very keen walkers and Hayden and Stephen are far fitter than me. It is quite a hill. As the weather was dry it meant the ground was good for walking, but I would not recommend this on a wet day. The views are stunning. Glorious rolling hills, trees, blue sky and white / grey folded clouds. You can’t beat an English panoramic landscape. It inspires the soul. We did stop a couple of times to catch our breath. Looking at the views was indeed a good excuse! We must have passed Beacon Hill on the A34 hundreds of times and had never thought to stop and look, let alone climb to the top. The hill is 261 metres high. My fit bit watch told me that I had climbed the equivalent of 37 flights of stairs. Not bad for my day’s exercise. The hill is actually the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort, allegedly built in 1000 BC, housing 2000-3000 people. It is good to stand and imagine what it would have been like all

Going down was far easier... those years ago and what families would have been doing and creating then. How times have changed. Now with all our gadgets, cars, machines… and then with sickles, pruning hooks, ploughs and iron axes. It was a pretty violent time too, so maybe there are benefits to our more modern age. All food for thought. Talking of which, the picnic at the foot of the hill on the two conveniently placed picnic tables, provided wellearned refreshments. Rachel had baked some delicious sausage rolls as well as cupcakes, so we were very well catered for. A harmonious rendition (that maybe a bit generous) of “Happy Birthday” to Grandpa signalled the close of a wonderful walk. Daichi had kept the food perfectly cool in his little fridge… he also looked rather cool and contented with himself as we drove away all smiles. I wonder if there were any ‘Mummies’ lurking in the trees, watching us? Before driving all the way home, we did stop off at Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey. It was open! That is a trip for another day. Daichi loves Downton, so there is a good chance he will take us. Will that be next month, or somewhere else? You will see… By Debbie Corney

• If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. • Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. • Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. • Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an
attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. Most types of herb can be raised from seed, but for a quicker start browse the farmers market, garden centre, or even car boot sales for plants that are ready to go. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!
