Act for Nature Barely a week goes by when we don’t hear on the news about the incredible strain our health system is under. Whether it’s overstretched A&E departments, or older people in our communities becoming frailer – it’s clear something needs to change for the NHS to cope. However there are some simple investments we can make to reduce the burden on the NHS. Nature and green spaces have a huge role to play in helping people become healthier, happier and more active in the future. For example physical inactivity affects some two thirds of the UK’s population - more than people with obesity, alcohol misuse and smoking combined. The impacts are on the economy are massive, with the bill running to £20 billion a year through treatment costs and lost work days through sickness. However research has found that living near to and being able to access green space means people are more active, and are far less likely to experience diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, hypertension and general bad health. Also one in four adults will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives, made worse by stressful lives and neighbourhoods. Mental ill-health costs more to society than crime. But time and time again we find that contact with nature can help to prevent and even reverse poor health and wellbeing. Even viewing nature through a window can help people recover from mental fatigue and illness, reduce stress, and improve concentration and mood. For example gardens in hospitals and care homes have been found to improve health and wellbeing through increases in relaxation and the ability to cope, reductions in stress and better mood. Being able to access natural spaces nearby is particularly important for children, who unfortunately are increasingly less engaged in the outdoors. Regular work with nature increases their ability to cope with stressful life events and develop better attention spans.

However these health problems aren’t evenly spread across Hampshire. People from less welloff backgrounds tend to live in areas without good quality green and open spaces, and suffer most from the poor health that comes with it. The same goes for minority communities and older people, whose access to green spaces and health tend to be worse. It seems obvious to say that nature makes us happier – who doesn’t love going out for a picnic or sitting on the beach for an afternoon? However it’s far more important than that – nature actually makes us physically and mentally healthier. That’s the reason we at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust are calling on politicians to consider introducing new laws to provide and protect green spaces for all of us to enjoy – an Act for Nature. The reality is that current laws don’t work for either nature or people, and it’s only through long term thinking that we’ll be able to solve some of our major problems. Our proposals challenge government, councils and developers to work with communities to introduce new green spaces into existing towns and protect green space that already exist. It’s about time that the benefits people get from a healthy natural environment are taken seriously. WWI Photographic Exhibition to Return An exhibition of restored World War I photographs that attracted around 3,000 people to East Boldre in May is to go on view again in October. The Spring event marked the centenary of the arrival of the Royal Flying Corps to the New Forest in 1915 and crowds flocked to the site of the historic airfield throughout the Bank Holiday weekend. Capacity audiences enjoyed a two-hour drama specially written to mark the occasion, watched a display of WWI replica aircraft, attended a commemorative service in the Parish Church and toured the exhibition of photographs and related Great War displays. Such were the crowds in the East Boldre Village Hall that many people were unable to get a clear view of the remarkable photographs. It is for that reason that the exhibition is being remounted over the weekend of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4, October, the East Boldre Village Hall display on view

Between 2.00pm and 4.00pm there will be guided tours of the airfield showing exactly where the aircraft hangars and other buildings on Bagshot Heath were located and walkers will be able to see the ‘˜BEAULIEU’ letters carved into the heath. The East Boldre Village Hall was built as the Officers Mess during WW1 to serve the Royal Flying Corps Training Station. Hundreds of photographs taken by RFC trainees have been donated to the Hall and have been painstakingly restored for the exhibition. Once again, there will be refreshments, Lidar mapping from the New Forest Park Authority, stands of the New Milton RAF Association, the Friends of the New Forest Airfields, the New Milton Heritage Association and the East Boldre Painters Group. Entrance to the exhibition is free but donations will be appreciated

This is an important warning for anyone who pays for childcare. There are major changes due to take place to the system this year – and you need to decide rather soon how they affect you. If you leave it too late, you could miss out on thousands of pounds. Are you eligible for childcare tax credits? The most important start point is to check if you’re entitled to what’s technically called the ‘Childcare Element of Working Tax Credit’ – this is NOT the same as Child Tax Credit. You can usually claim it for children up to age 15, provided you pay for approved (Ofsted or equivalent) childcare. Sadly the eligibility criteria are very complex. So I’ve tried to distil it in a simple rule of thumb: ‘if you’re a single parent working 16+ hours a week, or a couple BOTH working 16+ hours a week, and your total household income is under £46,000, you should definitely check out if you’re entitled.’ Please read this carefully – I’m not saying you are entitled, just that it is worth checking, as this is big money. The average pay out is around £60/week. That’s over £3,000/year. If you’re not entitled to tax credits, decide now which other scheme works for you This is where everything is changing. If you’re eligible for tax credits, you’re likely to be better off getting that. If not, there are other schemes to look at. This autumn, the new ‘tax-free childcare’ scheme launches and the current childcare vouchers scheme that lets many pay for childcare from their pre-tax income will close for new applicants. So if you’re eligible for vouchers, but won’t be for the new scheme, get in quick. - New tax-free childcare scheme: If you’re a single parent who works, or a couple where BOTH work, and you each earn under £150,000, for every 80p you put in a new childcare account, the government will add 20p on top which can be used to pay for Ofsted approved (or equivalent) childcare for under-12s. The maximum the Government will contribute is £2,000 per child per year. Most childminders, after-school clubs are Ofsted approved, as are many nannies. - Current childcare voucher scheme. Here you usually trade in your pre-tax salary for vouchers. For example, a basicrate taxpayer can swap £1,000 of salary, which after tax and National Insurance is only £700ish in your pay packet, for £1,000 in childcare vouchers. So you’re up £300 per £1,000.

The maximum you can get is £55/week per year per parent, which would be a gain of £930 for a basic-rate taxpayer. Any parent can do this, even if their partner doesn’t work, provided your employer offers it (many do, but many don’t). Yet if you’re not signed up to this by the time the new scheme starts, you can’t do it after. So if it’s right for you – sort it soon. - Tax-free childcare vs childcare vouchers. If you’re a couple where only one works, the vouchers win hands down, as you won’t be eligible for the new scheme. Plus, if your childcare costs are low, it’s likely vouchers win due to the tax and National Insurance savings. Yet for the self-employed, those whose ﬁrms don’t offer the vouchers, or those with more than one child and high childcare costs, the new scheme wins. This is just the tip of the iceberg – full analysis of which wins at mse.me/ childcare. What about free childcare for three and four year-olds? The Government have announced plans to give working parents with three and four-year-olds 30 hours of free childcare per week. If made law, pilot schemes will start in Sep 2016, though there’s scepticism about whether it’s deliverable. Yet already for at least 38 weeks a year (each week of the school year), if you’ve a three or four-year-old, you’re entitled to 15 hours a week of free childcare. Families with a low income may also get free early education for twoyear-olds. Contact your local council to check if your child qualiﬁes at (a good place to start is gov.uk/find-free-early-education). If they do, go to finder.familyandchildcaretrust.org for info on which childcare providers you can use under the scheme. You then liaise directly with the provider to get the free childcare. Is there help for paying for summer schools? If you’ve got older children and work, check whether there are any summer schools in your area that they can go to. Some schools, community centres and youth groups have their own schemes. Most are Ofsted (or equivalent) registered, so if you pay for them, you qualify for childcare tax credit or you can use childcare vouchers to pay for them.

New Forest Arts Society The New Forest Art Society held another successful summer exhibition at Lyndhurst Community Centre, which was opened by Tim Craven, Curator of Arts at Southampton City Art Gallery. The Society received many compliments on the quality and diversity of works exhibited and was pleased to sell a good number of paintings and many cards. The recently updated website (newforestartsociety.weebly.com) has a selection of paintings by all exhibiting artists, as well as slides of the preview event, held on the first morning. Christine Coney was a joint winner of Best in Show voted by all those who attended the Preview for her ‘Three Hens – Green’ in acyrlic.

The NFAS website also details future meetings: Stephen Foster in September, Penny Brown in October and a return of Tim Craven in November. Non-members always welcome (small entry fee). The Society is open to new members joining. The Society’s next exhibition and sale is December 12th and 13th at Lyndhurst Community Centre; ideal timing for purchasing for Christmas. WALKER 7UDLQ WLFNHWV RYHUFKDUJLQJ DQG ZKDW \RX FDQ GR DERXW LW A Channel 4 documentary earlier this year highlighted just how confusing and complex the UK’s train ticket pricing structure is – and how many passengers are routinely overcharged. Of course, any system that mixes regulated and unregulated pricing schemes, combined with a complex network of competing operators will be a breeding ground for confusion, and a potential opportunity for the unscrupulous to make a quick quid. So what can you do if you feel you’ve paid too much for your ticket, and who can you complain to? Not getting the cheapest fare? The convoluted system of ticket rules and different rail operators means that the ‘cheapest’ ticket you are offered either online or at the station ticket kiosk may not actually be the lowest possible price for that journey. One way around this is by splitting your fare up into separate parts, which can be cheaper than buying just one ticket for the whole journey. Our partners at MoneySavingExpert.com offer a ticket-splitting tool called Tickety Split. This allows you to work out whether or not your planned journey would be cheaper being broken up into more than one purchase. Paying when you don’t have to Another issue I’ve discovered is when we at resolver.co.uk looked into rail fares you end up paying when you don’t have to. For example, Children under 10 can travel free within Greater London, yet when you buy a child’s ticket from a station outside zone 6, they will often give the option of ‘bundling’ in a travelcard for an extra cost – extra cost for travel that ought to be free. In our example, we found that a child’s return ticket from Winchester into Waterloo cost an extra £2.35 when you added a one-day travelcard. Train companies do not make you aware of this loophole, and are happy instead to sell you a ticket. And it’s not just an issue that’s limited to travel in and around London – we found several examples of such unnecessary charges around other cities around the UK, too. The official rules and what sort of redress you’re entitled to When you take a train, you purchase a ticket under the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and these are referenced on the ticket. It is important to realise our information covers your basic rights. Some train companies (also known as TOCs) may offer you improved compensation. If your train is more than an hour late then you are definitely entitled to compensation. As a minimum you are entitled to a refund of 20% of your single ticket and 10% of your return ticket.

However, you can find the compensation can actually be as high as 50% for more than a 30-minute delay. If something does go wrong always remember to ask. The bad news is your compensation will be in the form of National Rail vouchers, so you will be back on the trains again! You can choose any train company to use these with but they cannot be used for online train ticket purchases. Keep persisting and some companies will change these vouchers to a cheque refund. If you are not satisfied If you are not satisfied with the resolution then you have the right to escalate your case to Travel Focus (covering outside of London) or London Travelwatch (for London). What about incidental costs? If your train is delayed and you cannot get to your final destination, you can claim for hotel or taxi costs. However, you should make the stationmaster or train conductor aware of the situation. Be sure to take down their name in case you need to prove you gave them advanced warning. Season tickets The majority of customer journeys are with season tickets and the refunds are calculated based on the delay. For a weekly ticket if the delay is greater than 1 hour you are entitled to 20% of the ticket price divided by 7. For monthly tickets it depends on the train company. If they operate the Passenger Charter scheme then your discount will be applied when you repurchase a ticket, if they fail to meet their charter levels. The alternative is the “delay and repay” scheme where you receive compensation every time the train is more than 30 minutes late. However, you need to make a claim. Get out of jail free (for train companies) There are certain situations where compensation is not due. Train companies can avoid paying any compensation under the following circumstances: • Vandalism, suicide or trespassers on the line • Line closure by Police of ﬁre services • Exceptional weather conditions • Unused train tickets If you don’t use the train ticket Advance tickets are not refundable unless the train was delayed Season tickets of more than one month you can get a refund on a pro-rata basis Consumer Champion – the man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints! www.resolver.co.uk/

A Memorable Place to Start a Learning Journey Moyles Court School in the New Forest near Ringwood caught public attention this year with its new slashed fee structure and clear messages on its strong individualised learning, wrap around care service and new ﬂexible transport arrangements.

Lucy’s recipe corner Yummy banana bread

Get the oven on ﬁrst so that it heats up to 350°F (175°C) and grease up or line a small oblong loaf tin.

INGREDIENTS

2 or 3 ripe, peeled bananas 1/3 cup of melted butter 1 beaten egg 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 teaspoon of baking soda A pinch of salt 1 ½ cups of all-purpose ﬂour ½ a cup of sugar

Mash up the bananas in a mixing bowl and stir in the butter once smooth. Mix in the baking soda, salt, sugar, beaten egg and vanilla. Mix in the ﬂour. Pour the mixture into your loaf tin and bake for around an hour. You can tell if it’s cooked by sliding a knife or skewer into the middle and if it comes out clean you’re done. Let the loaf cool on a rack and serve when slightly warm. Perfect with some custard!

Looking a lot like a giant daisy, an aster springs forth with a starry shaped head providing colour in late summer and autumn when many of the other blooms may have already faded away. These plants can grow up to 8ft in height depending on the variety chosen so they’re a great choice for many gardens given their flexibility. The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Nellie took us to The Ashdown Forest! It would be a good school project for pupils to compare and contrast our wonderful New Forest with The Ashdown Forest. They are alike in so many ways, yet very different in others. Part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty, The Ashdown Forest is 30 miles south of London situated in East Sussex. Nellie was extremely excited to be going away, with her friends Roxy, Rocky and Mega, the bikes, as well as “Kombi”, otherwise known as …“The Tent”. When we set off the weather was wonderful, glorious sunshine and blue skies. We arrived at our destination around 8pm after picking Hayden up from school. We did get stuck in some traffic jams but nothing too horrendous. Stephen and I had booked a site in Crowborough at the Caravan and Camping Club. It is a very clean site, well kept, and certain spots have magnificent views over the hills. The facilities are small but very adequate. We set up camp…. with great anticipation.

The view from Stone Farm Rocks The following day the rains started and it pretty much rained for the next 3 days! One evening we even had lightening and awful winds. It is quite something lying there wondering if the tent will hold or are we all going to be blown into the sky? What with that and the Gatwick Jumbo 747’s flying low above us, as they were about to land. It was all very exciting! There are other words I could use, but this is a family magazine… I was glad we had bought a decent air bed and had lots of bedding, so we were well wrapped up. The tent does have an inner section for the bedrooms, which did help with some of the leaking that occurred. With driving rain like that, hard for several days solid, it is hardly surprising that some drips do start to fall inside. One night Hayden wasn’t at all happy, but I told him we would all take refuge in Nellie, if the tent suddenly collapsed. That seemed to appease him. Good old Nellie. All in all I think we survived really well and I can

27 27 now say we are hardened campers! Nellie is also recovering well and is starting to smile again. Once the rains stopped we went to climb rocks (well actually I looked at them), that are deemed to be 135 million years old! Nearly as old as I felt with all that worry about the rain. “Stone Farm Rocks” they are called and it is a Site of Scientific Interest. It is owned by the British Mountaineering Council and there are 74 climbs for those adventurous to try. There is actually quite an ‘atmosphere’ around these rocks and I would imagine you could spend an interesting evening in the dark around the bonfire we saw, that had recently gone out. The huge, 5,566,000 cubic metres Weir Wood Reservoir covering a site of 280 acres can be seen from the top of the rocks and it is obvious why this region is known for its outstanding beauty. Awesome. Travelling back we found a lovely organic farm shop, called Plaw Hatch and just had to stop and buy some good, wholesome food. Camping has that effect on you, you suddenly have the urge to be more healthy. It must be all that fresh countryside air!

Hayden feeding one of the goats The Ashdown Forest itself has some wonderful walks, fantastic places to park the car (or van) and wonder at the expanse of picturesque English countryside rolling before you. There are sheep, cows and some fierce looking bulls, though I think they are pretty harmless, as long as you leave them alone. You know who is boss! There are plenty of trees, shrubs and heathland to gaze at. If you like animals, the Llama Park is a great day out. There are family walks that can be done with the Llamas themselves, pony rides for the children, wonderful reindeer, cute looking alpacas, peacocks, pigs, goats, a play ground and a lovely café / restaurant. Oh yes, there is also a fantastic clothes shop with some superb alpaca knitwear. A definite must for the ladies. Nellie loved her day there, and so did Hayden! Where will Nellie go next…?

New Ford Mondeo

By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk The fifth generation Mondeo is now available with Ford’s range of economical EcoBoost engines and, for the first time in the UK, a hybrid petrol-electric option. Introduced in 1992 to replace the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo went on to become a piece of popular culture in 1996 when Tony Blair used the phrase ‘Mondeo Man’ in his Labour Party Conference address. What a shame there’s so much badge snobbery around these days though. The reaction I got from premiumbadge car lovers when I mentioned I was attending the Ford Mondeo press launch wasn’t exactly upbeat. This just goes to show how marketing and image affects people’s preconceptions. Don’t get me wrong; Ford is no stranger to spin either, but I’ve got to tell you this latest Mondeo is the real deal. At launch, I tested the Mondeo Titanium Estate 2.0 Duratorq TDCI. With 148bhp and 258 lb.ft of max torque, the Ford is able to dig deep at low revs, resulting in proper pulling power. Certainly, it’s easy to be blinded by the kudos of a premium badge but the Mondeo is brilliant whether in estate, five door hatch or four door hybrid semblances. It’s handsome, interior space is excellent, the ride is smooth and the handling is spot on. The diesel estate, in particular, excels in every single area. It’s fantastic to drive, it has a refined engine and the boot is the perfect shape for carrying a range of everyday items, from a family-sized weekly shop to a stack of suitcases. It’s good value and will be less costly to run than many of its competitors. The car is crammed with entertainment tech and safety gadgetry too. In fact it’s the most advanced Ford ever introduced in Europe, and has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority Euro NCAP. The Mondeo is the first car from the Blue Oval brand worldwide to offer Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This is designed to detect people in the road

ahead – or that could cross the vehicle’s path – and automatically applies the brakes if you don’t respond to warnings at the wheel. Also introduced for the first time in Europe is Ford’s ground-breaking Inflatable Rear Seatbelt technology. In the event of an accident, the seatbelts expand to disperse crash forces across a body area five times greater than that achieved by a conventional belt. This offers valuable extra protection to very young or old passengers with weaker chest areas. On the entertainment front, Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system boasts an eight-inch colour touch-screen to operate phone, entertainment, climate and navigation systems using voice commands. For example, simply pushing the voice control button and saying “I’m hungry” will display a list of local restaurants, and the MICHELIN guide can help you choose where to eat. SYNC 2 will then connect you by phone to the restaurant to book a table and guide you there. Groovy, or what? So, this Ford Mondeo with its ‘common-as-muck badge’ is as good, if not better, than many of the eulogized German ‘premium’ cars. Go on – hop in one and try one out. Depending upon your outlook, the last week of the summer holidays tends to conjure up sadness or relief. If you, like me, have spent the 6 weeks multi-tasking as you try to be a good enough mum and businesses woman, then the end of the holidays signals a clearer demarcation in roles and the return of dreaded mornings with their rushed routines. For some this is a time of burgeoning costs as the price of childcare, activity clubs, fun (and expensive) days out, new schools and uniforms take their toll. And so, picture the scene, it’s the last day of the holidays – with one child back at school and the other on a non- pupil day - don’t get me started. You’re wondering what to do to keep your little darling happily occupied so that you can end the holidays on a positive note without costing the earth? Well the answer for me and my nine year old son was finding the perfect project. With a passion for all things engineering and discovering how things work and a desire to create a go-kart, the decision was easy. Child-led projects are the answer so there could only be one focus. My task was to facilitate this, a bit like a dedicated gardener, tending a tender young plant in the hope that given the right environment, it will yield flowers and fruit. With this in mind I set about providing optimal conditions for go-kart building – an extra pair of hands, muscle and brains, only if needed, plus possible construction parts to be used. This was his project and his design so crucial to my role was only supporting when needed, without taking over the process. It was important, therefore, to get the right balance between me being available and ‘on call’ for encouragement and support, but not being ‘on top’. With a shed bursting with rubbish and crying out to be sorted, this was the perfect way of being present without being in the way. It also created our very own mini scrapheap challenge, providing a wonderful source of go-kart parts, from reinforcing bars to brackets and wheels! While some things can seem hard work for children, like brushing teeth and tidying-up, others like computer games and TV come easy.

With children typically spending too much time indoors and not enough outdoors interacting with nature and peers, projects like these guarantee fresh air and focus, and this was definitely the case with my son’s go-karting construction. Up and out bright and early before 8 and working through a quick sandwich lunch until tea, he knuckled down with determination to create a base – made from a pallet he’d cut down, wheelbarrow wheels and reinforcing bars, seat and prop – to avoid crushing in the event of the kart flipping. Steering took the form of a series of ropes and pullies as he drew upon his knowledge of sailing and ideas gleaned from Scrapheap Challenge. Problem solving, mastery, focus and a growing confidence were plain to see as he hammered, sawed, prised wheelbarrow wheels off, applied WD40, attached ropes and his go-kart design took shape. Although blessed with the weather I can’t help feeling that my son would still have been as determined and focused on turning his vision into a reality in the rain, cold or snow. As for me and the shed, which looks amazing (fingers crossed it stays that way), I’m ashamed to say that this was a fair weather relationship. With different weather clearing through piles of rubbish, dust and spiders would have definitely lost their appeal, reminding us of course that just like children, us adults like a self-chosen project to get our teeth into. With the go-kart ready for its debut launch, my thoughts turn to the next holiday and project and what part of the house or garden I can clear out?

Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course! Jobs for September:If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes.

Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started oﬀ at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh ﬂavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground.

Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, ﬂower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to ﬁnd out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!
