Dear Brockenhurst, This time of year we start to see the season of summer fayres and fetes. Hopefully the weather will be kind and perhaps not quite so “British”, to give these wonderful events the best possible attendance. Although we do always try and enjoy them, in true British Style, whatever the weather! On that note our son’s school recently held both their sports day and summer fayre. Stephen has to admit that his neck is a little sunburnt after a glorious afternoon on the school field watching the displays of country dancing, karate and even a field gun that is going on a sponsored ‘pull’ later in the year. Hayden was very proud that his ‘red team’ won at the sports day… And he was chosen to help collect the overall trophy! That is his last year at the school, so one to be remembered. We love those pleasant memories, don’t we. I bet you have some of your own. Maybe you would even like to tell us about one of them and email a photo to go with your story? Get Involved at the New Forest Show With just weeks to go until the Show opens, New Park is currently being transformed from an open, grassy field into a majestic village of tents, marquees and trade stands. The office is buzzing with entries coming in, letters and tickets being sent out, trade stand forms being auctioned and the countless volunteers are hard at work to make sure that this year’s Show will be another great success!
This year, the theme is ‘Get Involved’ and every section of the Show is offering some way in which visitors can be a part of life in the forest. Come along and you can: -- cuddle a rabbit in the Show Farm -- learn to cook delicious game recipes in the Countryside Area -- face your fears and climb the 80 foot poles that give you a wonderful panoramic view of the Showground and New Forest -- take the whole family to the Art Tent for a pottery lesson -- join in the Tug o’ War team against the tractor in Old Time Farming,

Brockenhurst Flower Club Meeting May 2013 Jenny Winstone entertained the Brockenhurst Flower Club members for the May meeting. Her demonstration featured a series of tall vases topped with mechanics to secure the arrangements. A pair of angular yellow vases each had yellow shaded foliage and ivy as a basis, to which were added green chrysanthemums and salmon coloured tulips. Hand woven wings were made with yellow raffia and iridescent coloured threads, to enhance the width of the display. Recalling a recent visit to Moraira, Spain, and the conservation area around the fishing port, beachcombing treasures were displayed in a glass schooner. The arrangement of silvery hosta leaves, with pale pink carnations to the right and white roses to the left, was enhanced with wings to complete the design. silver had an added matching handle to the right - another hand made addition to enhance the display. The top was decorated with cornus and hostas, and other variegated leaves, to which a collecton of green chrysanthemums was added. A wire framed structure, which resembled a bird cage, had some flowers and foliage hanging within the cage. This was adorned at the top with skimmia, hellibore leaves plus orange and red gerberas. The final demonstration used a lower square base which was attractively covered with rolled aspidistra leaves, hostas and other garden foliage. This was beautifully decorated with roses, tulips and shimmering anthuriums. Shelagh Richardson gave the vote of thanks, especially praising the contrasts and colour of the designs. To highlight National Flower Arrangers’ Week, one of the arrangements was donated to Robert Bruce, a Brockenhurst hairdresser, and another to the Village Hall. This month’s Club Members’ Competition entitled “Weird and Wonderful” was won by Maureen Medley. Join us on 16th September. Speaker Jean Plaskett - “Go with the Flow”. CORNER Making a Will
Making a will is something that many people tend to avoid, on the basis that it is ‘morbid’, ‘not needed yet’ and a myriad of other reasons. Well, whilst the thought of what happens after our death is perhaps scary or uncomfortable, the reality is that at some point it IS going to happen! So why not bite the bullet and get it done, out of the way and make a resolve to review it at regular milestones so that should the worst happen unduly early at least you know your loved ones have provisions made for them, big or small. Writing a will ensures that it is YOU who makes the decisions over your property and possessions after your death. It’s a good idea to get help when writing your will but you can do it yourself. Make sure you are over 18 years old; writing it voluntarily and you are of sound mind; signed by yourself in the presence of two witnesses and also signed by those witnesses too. Of course you also need to make sure it is held in a safe place accessible after your death. There are many companies available who can assist with this, or a family solicitor can also store your documents.

Make sure that you make statements about who you want to benefit from your will; who should look after any children under 18 years of age; who you wish to act on your behalf to carry out the wishes laid out in your will and what happens if the people who you want to benefit die before you do.

The Scarecrows of Bisterne Strike Again Beings with eyes that saw nothing, stared out, and people gathered round them to look curiously on. The 2012 annual scarecrow festival of Bisterne, in Hampshire, had begun. The straw folk took up residence along the highways and byways of the rural communities of Bisterne, Kingston and Sandford that lie on the borders of the New Forest National Park. For two weeks, in good weather and in foul, the scarecrows stood, exhibiting the creative talent of the local community. The festival was started in 2002, partly for fun but also to raise funds for Bisterne Village Hall, which itself was built in 1840 and originated as the village school. The contest since then has gone from strength to strength. Who said scarecrows are not important or taken seriously? Indeed, the history of the scarecrow itself goes right back into the mists of time. It is believed that 3,000 years ago Egyptian farmers made scarecrows along the River Nile to protect their crops from flocks of birds. The ancient Greeks also used them for the same reason. The English, however, were somewhat later in their use of the straw folk! It was not until the Great Plague of 1348, which killed
so many, that land owners, unable to find enough young boys to act as ‘bird scarers’, or ‘shooers’, started to stuff sacks with straw and carved faces in turnips or gourds, in order to protect their cops. Returning to the present day, the scarecrows of 2012 were far from mere sacks of straw with a turnip head! There were a total of twenty three entries, which expressed widely different interests including the Olympics, dragons, gnomes, speed-cops, gamekeepers and the great British summer. There was plenty for the children to enjoy such as Woody Toy Story, Alice through the looking Glass, Yubba Dubba Doo and Hansel and Gretel. The dragons, for instance, defiantly made their presence felt. The pair ‘Unicorn Jack and St George’s Dragon’ won both the pairs category as well as the best overall scarecrow. The unicorn stood tall and proud while the dragon itself lay by its side, curled up with its tail wrapped round and its well structured head rested on the ground. ‘Dragon’s Den’, which won second place in the single scarecrow category, was a large bright green

23 dragon with big yellow spots, sitting in its lair. Perchance it was dreaming of times gone by when “a devouring dragon” that lived in near by Burley Beacon “did much mischief upon man and cattel”. At Bisterne in 1459, so the story tells us, one Sir Maurice Berkeley encountered the dragon and together with his two trusty hounds, killed it. The legend is commemorated by names in the area such as Dragon Lane, Dragon Cottages and Dragon Field. Further along the road was ‘High Sheriff Hallam’. A tall gentleman scarecrow, dressed in a smart black suit with silver buttons and donning knee length boots. Indeed, the real Giles Marshall Hallam Mills, to give him his full name, is currently serving as the High Sheriff of Hampshire. It is an interesting note that the office itself is over 1,000 years old, having its roots in Saxon times and is the oldest continuous secular office under the crown. The Olympics was very much present in the contest. Jessica Ennis MBE and current Olympic heptathlon champion was represented. She was dressed in a red, white and blue outfit which was completed by a large gold medal hung around her neck with ‘Jess’ inscribed on it. The union Jack fluttered gently behind her. Standing next to her was Boris Johnson, Mayor of London. Dressed in a blue shirt and trousers his mayoral chain of office glistened in the sun. The notice beside him read ‘Boris Johnson, in training for Rio 2016’! The Queen herself was only to be seen if you looked up into the tree behind. Reflecting the Olympic Opening Ceremony, she was dressed in a pale

pink, long sleeved dress. If you looked closely enough you would see that she was sporting a badge declaring “I love 007”. Parachute straps dangled above. At Lower Kingston, a small, bright multicoloured cottage could be seen on the road side. The inside was fitted out with all the home comforts of a cooker, table, chairs and even pictures on the walls. Outside poor Hansel was locked in a cage and looked very unhappy. At least readers of Brothers Grimm could be comforted by knowing that the story ends happily ever after. It must have been a sad day, when the festival came to a close, and the roads no longer homed dragons, scarecrow speed-cops or the like. Happily, however, the festival will be held again this year, and will run from August 18th until September1st. If you are in the area, it may well be worth a visit. Scarecrows of 2013, we await you.
