Mad March Hares Despite the chill in the air, it’s clear that spring is tantalisingly close. One of the most delightful signs of the season has to be the sight of mad March hares batting at one another with furious, furry fists. While this strange ritual may look like a hostile feud, it is actually a precursor to courtship. The pugilists are usually the females, who fend off amorous male admirers by boxing with them. It is also thought that female hares use this technique to test the strength of their prospective partner before deciding whether to choose him as a mate. Hares are slightly larger than rabbits, with longer, more powerful legs, and larger ears with distinctive black tips. They are most common in open grassy or arable fields, particularly near to woodland fringes or hedgerows where hares can find shelter. With many arable fields still bare, March is by far the best time of year to see these beautiful animals at their theatrical best. For the most part, hares hide in long grass to conceal themselves from predators, but they are capable of impressive athleticism. Hares are can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour at full pelt and, when threatened, they will leap sideways and backwards over hedges to escape their pursuer. It appears that being able to run

at lightning speed is an excellent survival strategy. Hares are an ancient species, and fossil records show that their ancestors roamed the earth with the dinosaurs. It is thought that they were brought to the UK by the Romans, but have since become naturalised (which means that they are now established in the UK and are considered to be native). Like many other species, changes in agriculture have seen a dramatic decline in hare numbers. This is why we work with farmers across our two counties to help make their land more wildlife friendly - including providing cover and grazing for brown hares. If you’re hoping to get a ringside seat at a mad March boxing match, get up early to increase your chances and stay down wind so your scent doesn’t give you away. Brockenhurst FC News It’s exciting times at Brockenhurst Football Club both on and off the pitch. The first team are enjoying a season of mixed fortunes but we are delighted to report that several of last year’s under 18’s have become important members of the first team squad this year. Our recently developed youth structure was put in place with the express intention of creating opportunities for local youngsters and providing a route into senior football which is now beginning to pay dividends. This, in turn, ensures that we are firmly rooted in the local community and gives us an identity which we hope will encourage more local people to support our efforts whether that be through volunteering time or becoming club members. To provide a club structure that offers opportunities to footballers of all ages doesn’t come cheap and, in that regard, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our sponsors in the local business community with special mention going to our main sponsor Meadens Skoda who have been consistent in their generous support of our project over the last three years.
We are now full steam ahead in our planning for Brockstock 2020. The village’s biggest community event of the year will this year be sponsored by Gigseekr. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is a two day music and beer festival over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th. A majority of the bands are now already booked, admission is free and it’s a great event for all the family. There will be live bands all day from lunch time onwards, a great selection of beers, cider,pimms and prosecco in our outside bar, a selection of food outlets as well as inflatables and games for the kids. You won’t want to miss this so put the date in your diary now.

Myth busting with LPAs You may have seen our earlier article on The Reasons to have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). However, there are common misconceptions on why an LPA may not be necessary which this article explores further. 1. “I don’t need an LPA because my next of kin can make important decisions on my behalf.” Not true. No-one can act on your behalf or make decisions on your behalf if they have not been legally authorised to do so, not even your next of kin. 2. “My partner and I have joint bank accounts, so we don’t need LPAs.” Not true. This always alarms couples the most, when they are told that even if they have a joint bank account the partner may not be able to automatically access funds to pay for bills, mortgage or general expenses. If one of you were to lose capacity, the bank can remove access and freeze the account until it receives a copy of a registered LPA. This can be an extremely stressful time for the partner. 3. “I have appointed executors in my Will, so they’ll be able to make decisions on my behalf.” Not true. A Will is entirely separate to an LPA. Executors appointed in a Will only have the power or authority to distribute your estate as requested and in line with your Will, on your death. They have no authority to make decisions on your behalf during your lifetime. 4. “I don’t need an LPA until I become elderly and in ill health.” Not true. An LPA can be made by anyone
over the age of 18 who has full mental capacity. Someone may lose capacity and no longer be able to make decisions due to an accident, being in a coma or mental illness. The sooner you arrange an LPA the better as you will have peace of mind knowing provisions are already in place in the event of the unthinkable happening. If you wait and lose capacity in that time, it will be too late to arrange an LPA and your loved ones will need to apply for a Deputyship Order from the Court of Protection. This not only takes a long time but is also a costly process. 5. “Once my Health and Welfare LPA is registered, it means someone else can make decisions for me and I don’t want that while I still have capacity.” Not true. A Health and Welfare LPA only comes into effect when the donor loses capacity even if the LPA has been registered. All the while you can make your own Health and Welfare decisions you will continue to do so. 6. “Getting an LPA is expensive.” Not true. It does not have to be expensive with Dorset & Wight. (See our prices opposite). The cost of registering an LPA is a maximum of £82 per document. In comparison, if you fail to make an LPA and lose capacity, your family will be left with no other option but to apply for a Deputyship Order. This will cost considerably more.

Hampshire Quirky Facts Renowned as the birthplace of great Victorian author Charles Dickens and the home of the glorious Tudor vessel the Mary Rose, Hampshire is a county enriched by its history as much as its beautiful surroundings. From Hampshire’s very own tortoise society to a special visit from the Beatles, here are a handful of quirky facts which celebrates Hampshire as the beloved county it is. 1. Did you know that Hampshire has its very own Tortoise Society? Joining together tortoise owners from across the county as well as the Isle of Wight and further afield, the Tortoise Society aims to help support fellow owners and to help with all elements of care for tortoises including helping to provide good homes for rescued tortoises among many other functions. 2. Were you aware that one of the very first gigs the Beatles performed before bursting onto the British Rock ‘n’ Roll scene and ensuing international success was in Aldershot at the Palais Ballroom? In the December of 1961, the band performed to a Hampshire crowd numbering just eighteen in an attempt to expose them to fame. Despite the small crowd, no doubt the Beatles enjoyed their visit to Hampshire and it is even rumoured that the four sampled some local chips! 3. Interestingly Hampshire is home to a rare example of a ‘Pest House’ which was built around 1622 and is one of only a few examples that survive today. Pest houses were designed to
be used as basic quarantine facilities in which those suffering from contagious diseases could reside until their recovery or more often than not, their death. Hampshire’s Pest House is located in Odiham and is not only a fascinating and rare example but also gives an insight into the social history of Hampshire’s bygone past and is even open for the public to see. 4. New Forest Ponies are world renowned for their Hampshire connection and interestingly even William the Conqueror saw their worth after his historical victory in 1066 when he had an impressive two thousand of the local breed transported back home. As with so many native breeds however, the New Forest Pony has seen many declines in its history. In the 18th century however, an important Throughbred stallion who had already produced one of the most famous and successful racehorses in history, was introduced into the herds. 5. It would be hard to think of a traditional teatime favourite without mentioning fish fingers and interestingly Hampshire was the first to sample such treats. Although fish fingers were developed in Great Yarmouth by Birdseye, it was shoppers in Southampton who were first able to add the soon-to-be popular product to their weekly shopping and no doubt everyone was asking for seconds! by Mica Bale

The Adventures of Daichi
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Daichi the Dashing Dude, otherwise known as the Hampshire Publications Campervan, decided to be a Time Machine last month, but instead of casting with Michael J Fox, loved by many in his role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, Daichi chose myself and Hayden as the lead roles, to go ‘back to the past’. To Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire in fact. Having travelled all the way from Japan, Daichi wanted to know what it was like here in Medieval Britain. I had not driven Daichi for quite some time, so was a little nervous, as he can get pretty playful and does like to wave at passers by with his window wipers instead of indicating where he is going. This has nothing to do with me forgetting what I am doing of course and that the buttons are the ‘other way round’. In addition to that Daichi chose a route that was on single track roads for some of the time. Really. When we saw the bright white reverse lights of the car in front and its boot springing

Daichi taking Debbie & Hayden to Wardour towards us, I was quick to react and avoided Daichi head butting this car’s bottom. That was not a pretty sight. We arrived safely and as I parked and switched off Daichi’s purring engine, the sliding side door suddenly sprang open and an apple, that had rolled out of the picnic bag, flew out! Literally. Hayden laughed loudly. Daichi really was being playful and had obviously been wrapped up too long in the cold garden. Again, this was nothing to do with me pressing any wrong buttons… I just don’t know how you can think that. Wardour Castle is a delight. Ideal for children to run around and explore, and romantic for us oldies to look longingly at the rolling English countryside and imagine what life was like back in the 14th Century. The ladies dreaming of those long flowing gowns and the men with shoulders back, chests puffed out and manly swords in their hands. I know that is very stereo type and I really am showing my age now. 27 know is very proud, could certainly see himself as a Mediaeval Knight in very shiny armour… The castle in fact was built when we, the English, were busy fighting the 100 Years War in France. Wiltshire was a relatively safe location. Designed as a six-sided house with rooms for guests to specifically impress everyone with its status, grandeur and power. It was a house to show off who John, 5th Lord Lovell really was. How connected he was to High Society and the Crown. Built in the fourteenth century, totally as a lavish home to entertain guests and eat like kings while beautifully placed in the peaceful countryside with a magnificent lake full of fish. No mote or high defences. It does have small, slit windows on the ground floor, but this castle was clearly built for luxury living. You can still walk up the spiral staircase to the top of the fifth floor and marvel at the views. Cooking is not my favourite occupation, but back in those days with two huge fires, spit roasts and huge boiling pans it would have been a hell of a job. No wonder the scullions, seen as the lowest of the low in those days, worked almost naked! Do not try this at home… The Hall were the owners and their guests “Castle’s-eye” view ate on the over the lake other hand
had large windows and an extended door, to show their wealth and sophistication. There was a balcony where the musicians tunefully soothed their Debbie explores opulent guests the grotto below. The class difference is clearly visible. There is a Great Chamber, an inner private room with even higher ceilings, where only the very important guests were invited. Sadly, The Civil War destroyed the building in 1644. There is a new castle nearby, but this magnificent building was left to stand as a romantic ruin for all to admire and now belongs to English Heritage. The Grotto in the secluded gardens is inspiring. Totally man-made in 1792 by Josiah Lane of Tisbury and his father. With nooks and crannies to explore by both the young and the old. There are seats of stone, stalactites and stalagmites, rocks, algae, ivy and an atmosphere. Love it. I can see why Kevin Costner came here to film “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves”! That would have been exciting to see. Daichi was as proud as punch that we had so much fun. Nothing like a bit of history to keep the wheels turning… and Daichi certainly likes to do just that! Stride out and Walk for Hope Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its fourth year on Sunday 7th June, and the charity would love more walkers than ever to put their best foot forward and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. Three hundred people and 30 dogs took part in the 2019 walk. Together they raised £50,000. Participants can choose from a five, 10 or 20-mile route, making the event accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Dan Bateman walked the ten-mile route in 2019 with his wife Ashleen who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. He said: “The months leading up to the walk had obviously been really tough for us, so taking part in Walk for Hope was something really positive to focus on. Everyone who took part was really friendly and because we’ve all been touched by cancer in some way, there was a real sense of community and support. It wasn’t a race because we really felt like we were on the same team.” Dan says he recognises that taking part in a charity event can be daunting, but advises anyone thinking about it to, “go for it”: “Walk for Hope was great because it was challenging, but there was a choice of distances so as many people as possible could get involved. You can view it as a gentle stroll or be more competitive with yourself. Ten miles tested us more than we had thought and the legs were a bit sore the next day, but we felt a real sense of achievement when we crossed the finish line. We were spurred on by everyone around us and knowing we were doing it for a brilliant cause. And of course the promise of a burger at the end!” Catherine Lawry from Wessex Cancer Trust who’s organising the event, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and
we would love 2020 to be the biggest and best yet.” Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, training and fundraising tips, and membership to our Team Wessex Facebook group where they can meet other supporters and share fundraising ideas and photos. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with wellearned refreshments. Tickets are £15 for a child under 16, £25 for adults and £75 for a team of four, with a sponsorship goal of £200. GUIDE Carrots
There is absolutely nothing like a carrot pulled fresh from the ground... ...that wonderful smell, which soon disappears and is never apparent in shop bought ones and the taste of that sweet orange root can only be achieved by growing your own. They can be sown from March to July and can be grown in containers at least 12 inches deep. Like any plant with a long tap root, carrots do not like being transplanted so should be sown directly into the soil where they are to grow. They are happiest in light, rather sandy soil so if you have heavy clay, you should add plenty of sharp sand (not builders sand) Germination won't be so good if the soil hasn't warmed up and it's best to sow the seed into well prepared soil that has already been watered. It is important to sow the seed as thinly as
possible, which isn't easy as the seed is so small. Try mixing it with a handful of sand which stops the seed from sticking together and makes it easier to see where they're going. However careful you are, the seedlings will probably need thinning at least once to give the carrots room to swell. This operation is best carried out in the evening as carrot fly can be a problem, particularly in early summer when they lay their eggs around the roots) They are attracted by the smell of disturbed plants and thinning’s should be moved away immediately. Try growing chives, onions or garlic around the carrots to mask the smell or you could put fleece (available from garden centres or some hardware shops) over the carrots after sowing.

This month’s walk is a first of it’s kind, in that it involves and entirely ‘out and back’ route, which if done fully would cover approximately 5.5 miles. The terrain is gentle, mostly through woodlands, with tree roots and loose gravel being the greatest hazards. By following the described route the regular walker should be back home in about 2 hours, provided distractions do not create too much delay. Photo 1
The suggested parking is beside The Anchor Inn, Eling Lane, Totton, SO40 9GD (photo 1), where you overlook Eling Wharf and you are only a smidgeon away from Eling Tide Mill (photo 2), which is very well worth a visit if time allows. This location also marks the Southern end of the Test Way, a 48 mile route up to the top of Hampshire. Meanwhile if a visit to the Mill is the plan, it would be best advised to check on opening times. When the tide is especially high then parts of this walk might be damp, so check the
high tide times before starting. Also, as there are great views across the water (still the River Test), then binoculars would be a bonus. It is possible to catch up with bird life of several varieties, including gulls, little egrets, curlieu, oystercatchers, red and green shank along with the occasional heron out fishing. Once leaving the car (at last), we head directly back to the Tide Mill and walk left over the Toll Bridge (free to walkers), with the Mill holding pond over to the right and an expansive view down towards Southampton Docks on the left. Clearing this bridge we immediately turn left again and follow the defined path around the shingle edge of the foreshore. The first landmark here is the open grassy field, always popular with dog walkers and family groups; beyond that we drop down to follow the coast path on the left, with the estuary water lapping at our feet. Far away to our left we get a full view of the workings at Southampton Container Port, the 2nd largest in the Britain; with giant cranes and container forklifts shuttling along the quayside (photo 3). In about 300 metres we meet a woodland as the fence line drops back to the right. At this point we must climb the short bank and continue the journey in the dry, continuing to follow the coast side path all the time, tracing the outlets and inlets of this tidal estuary.

The return journey may seem uneventful, but with the vital right hand turn opposite the Sewage Works (see photo 4 again) and no waymark arrows, it is a challenge to maintain the correct trail. It is intriguing how everything looks different when viewed in reverse. This path weaves, wiggles and twists under the trees for around 1.5 miles (2.5 km) as the scene across the water to the left continues to alter, it will be easy to halt and count the plethora of birdlife, especially at lower tides. Then eventually the path meets a T junction, when a metal fence surrounding Marchwood Sewage Works, comes into view. We must turn left here, but make a very good note of the location (photo 4) as this will be an important turning point on the return journey. Photo 5
We now embark on the final leg, towards the outer edge of residential Marchwood, passing a jetty (photo 5) then eventually reaching a concrete walkway in front of Maritime Avenue and leading to the Esplanade (photo 6). Conveniently enough there is a bench to rest a short while before turning for home again and a chance to catch up with a fresh flock of sea birds down stream.
Once out of the woods and dropping down onto the soft, even boggy, finale, we can see Eling Wharf in the distance as it comes back into view. With the very final stretch swinging right over the Toll Bridge and right again beside the Mill and along the Wharf to the waiting car. Needless to say, a warm welcome awaits the weary traveller within the Anchor Inn, so feel free to gain refreshment before starting for home. It’s always good to be prepared. Here’s some tips for your walk… • Remember high visibility clothing, vest or sash are ideal. Be seen at all times. • Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended. • A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety). • Make sure you take your rubbish home to keep our countryside clean and help the environment. • Dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags and for hot days water & portable bowl. • Be ‘Tick Aware’ when enjoying the countryside. Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.
