Refill New Forest Refill New Forest launched last week with the aim of tackling plastic pollution in the New Forest by making it easier to locate free tap water. This is part of a larger, national campaign which to-date has over 1600 refill points in the UK.
The Refill App allows people to search for the nearest location to fill up their water bottles. Participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums, estate agents and other businesses simply put a sticker in their window – alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to come on in and fill up their bottle – for free! By adding themselves to the app, the public can search for the nearest business which offers free tap water. Gus Hoyt, Refill Programme Manager at City to Sea, was delighted to see the New Forest becoming part of the scheme: “We are over the moon that the New Forest is joining the Refill Family. As a child I spent many a happy summer camping in this beautiful part of the world which we all need to help protect from litter and pollution.”

Turners Sims, Southampton awarded £30,000 Arts Council England funding Turner Sims is delighted to announce that it has been awarded £30,000 from Arts Council England’s Catalyst Small Grants programme. Turner Sims, part of the University of Southampton, is an internationally renowned concert hall and live music producing organisation, attracting worldclass musicians, both nationally and internationally, for over 40 years. The funding will enable Turner Sims to launch a series of campaigns, to raise funds towards the organisation’s capital plans and delivery of music learning and engagement programmes for the community. A series of creative projects involving artists, bespoke fundraising training for staff and the development of a new Fundraising Strategy are also part of the plan to attract investment from new funders, donors and businesses. Kevin Appleby, Turner Sims Concert Hall Manager, said of the award: “I am hugely grateful to Arts Council England for supporting Turner Sims in this way. The investment will strengthen our fundraising approach, in partnership with the wider University, and give us a range of exciting new resources to tell the story about the organisation’s achievements and our ambitions for the future.”

Roast Beef with Rosemary & Garlic
Ingredients 1 joint of beef 1 -3 tsp coarse salt(generous amount) 1 -3tsp fresh cracked pepper 1 tbsp fresh rosemary 10 garlic cloves
1.
Settle the joint and let it stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour. 2. Mix the salt and pepper together. 3. Insert some of the rosemary directly into the skin of the joint, scoring with a sharp knife to help you insert it. 4. Preheat the oven to 375oF. 5. Kiri te Kanawa By Tim Saunders
Celebrated opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has announced that she will not sing in public again. Her last public performance was in Melbourne, Australia in October 2016. “Before I’d gone on, I said, right, this it. And that was the end,” the soprano recently revealed on the BBC’s Today programme. “I don’t want to hear my voice. It is in the past. When I’m teaching young singers, and hearing beautiful young fresh voices, I don’t want to put my voice next to theirs.” Perhaps the greatest success for the New Zealand opera star was singing at the wedding of Lady Diana and Prince Charles at St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1981. A worldwide audience of 600m tuned in to watch this memorable occasion. In 2013 she appeared in ITV’s Downton Abbey playing the Australian operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Te Kanawa has received accolades in many countries, singing a wide array of works in multiple languages from the 17th to the 20th centuries. She is particularly associated with the works of Mozart, Strauss, Verdi, Handel and Puccini, and has found particular success in portraying princesses, nobility, and other similar characters on stage. Born Claire Mary Teresa Rawstron in Gisborne, New Zealand she has Maori and European ancestry, but little is known about her birth parents. She was adopted by Thomas Te Kanawa, a Maori, and his wife, Nell. She had never made any attempt to contact her natural parents, but around this time, her half-brother Jim Rawstron contacted her. Initially, she was not willing to meet him, but later agreed. This episode ended in bitterness, and she has since reaffirmed her decision to have nothing to do with her birth family. Educated at St Mary’s College, Auckland, she formally trained in operatic singing by Dame Sister Mary Leo. Beginning her singing career as a mezzo-soprano, she later developed into a soprano. Her recording of the “Nuns’ Chorus” from the Strauss operetta Casanova was New Zealand’s first gold record.
She met Desmond Park on a blind date in London in August 1967, and they married six weeks later at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland adopting two children, Antonia and Thomas. The couple divorced in 1997. In her teens and early 20s, Te Kanawa was a pop star and popular entertainer at clubs in New Zealand and regularly appeared in newspapers and magazines. In 1963, she was runner-up to Malvina Major in the Mobil Song Quest with her performance of “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca, and in 1965 she won the same competition. As winner, she received a grant to study in London. In 1966, she then won the prestigious Australian Melbourne Sun-Aria contest, which Major had also won the previous year. Both students had been taught by Sister Mary Leo. Later that year, without an audition, she enrolled at the London Opera Centre to study under Vera Rózsa and James Robertson, who reputedly said Te Kanawa lacked a singing technique when she arrived at the school but did have a gift for captivating audiences. She first appeared on stage as the Second Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, as well as in performances of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in December 1968 at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre. She also sang the title role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. In 1969, she sang Elena in Rossini’s La donna del lago at the Camden Festival; and was offered the role of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro after an audition of which the conductor, Colin Davis, said, “I couldn’t believe my ears. I’ve taken thousands of auditions, but it was such a fantastically beautiful voice.” Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Unfold the history of the New Forest with this fascinating exhibition of maps Take a trip through the cartographical history of the New Forest at the New Forest Centre’s new exhibition, Maps: The New Forest Unfolded.
Launched at a special preview evening in January the exhibition explores the biography of the Forest through a specially chosen selection of maps from the Christopher Tower Reference Library, which is housed within the New Forest Centre in Lyndhurst. It includes maps of large and small scale which illuminate not only the landscape but the individuals and institutions that have shaped the Forest as it is today. Curated by New Forest Knowledge Project Officer Dr Katharine Walker and library volunteer and map enthusiast Patrick Keane, the maps exhibited range from geological surveys and maps of Naval timber to Drivers’ maps and route maps produced by organisations such as the Ordnance Survey, Forestry Commission and AA.
“I am delighted to see this exhibition come together. It has been an absolute pleasure to showcase some of the highlights from the Christopher Tower Library,” said Dr Walker. “Selecting favourites from around 6000 maps was challenging, but it gives a flavour of the quality and breadth of this exceptional collection. Putting on an exhibition is not just about the objects, it is about the team and we are very lucky to have some excellent volunteers working with us at the New Forest Centre.” One of the volunteers (and exhibition co-curator) Patrick Keane was selected to open the New Forest Volunteer Fair at Lyndhurst Community Centre on Sunday 28 January after he was found to be the top volunteer with the New Forest National Park Authority’s Our Past, Our Future project for his work at the Christopher Tower Reference Library. Maps: The New Forest Unfolded runs until 15 April in the New Forest Centre Gallery. It is open daily and admission is free.

Farmers group together to restore nature across the local landscape A group of twenty farmers in west Hampshire are working together to improve the natural environment across 4550 hectares of farmland in the Wallop Brook river catchment area. The Wallop Brook farmers are one of 37 groups to receive funding from DEFRA in the latest round of Countryside Stewardship Facilitation Fund awards, announced today. This funding will allow the farmers to work with an experienced conservation expert and farm advisor from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, in order to find the best ways to deliver environmental improvements on their land. The farmers believe that by coming together to manage the whole catchment from top to bottom, they can look after their natural assets and help make their farms more sustainable. As well as producing food, the Wallop Brook farmers are managing a range of important natural, historical and cultural assets including the brook itself, floodplain meadows and pastures, ancient woodlands, flower rich grasslands, cornfield flowers, footpaths and bridleways and ancient hedgerows. Their collective efforts will provide improved habitats for wildlife on a landscape scale to better aid conservation of important species, including water vole and brown trout, the rare corn bunting, grey partridge, brown hare, bats, rare butterflies and moths. Alison Cross, of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, who will act as farm advisor to the Wallop Brook group, said: “I’m
delighted to be working with this group of committed and passionate farmers. I believe that together we can achieve significant results for wildlife and the wider environment. “In this first year we will be taking a close look at soil health and how it can be improved. Getting the soil right is fundamental to the health of our crops, rivers and wildlife. We will also be starting a programme of detailed wildlife surveys to help us ensure that we are targeting our work in the right way.” Speaking about the latest Facilitation Fund awards, Farming Minister George Eustice said: “This fund is contributing to an important step change in nature conservation by encouraging and supporting people who bring farmers, foresters and other land managers together to improve the local natural environment at a landscape scale. “It is particularly encouraging to see how many high quality applications we received, which we hope to replicate across the Countryside Stewardship scheme due to simpler wildlife offers being introduced this year.”

GUIDE Carrots
There is absolutely nothing like a carrot pulled fresh from the ground... ...that wonderful smell, which soon disappears and is never apparent in shop bought ones and the taste of that sweet orange root can only be achieved by growing your own. They can be sown from March to July and can be grown in containers at least 12 inches deep. Like any plant with a long tap root, carrots do not like being transplanted so should be sown directly into the soil where they are to grow. They are happiest in light, rather sandy soil so if you have heavy clay, you should add plenty of sharp sand (not builders sand) Germination won't be so good if the soil hasn't warmed up and it's best to sow the seed into well prepared soil that has already been watered. It is important to sow the seed as thinly as
possible, which isn't easy as the seed is so small. Try mixing it with a handful of sand which stops the seed from sticking together and makes it easier to see where they're going. However careful you are, the seedlings will probably need thinning at least once to give the carrots room to swell. This operation is best carried out in the evening as carrot fly can be a problem, particularly in early summer when they lay their eggs around the roots) They are attracted by the smell of disturbed plants and thinning’s should be moved away immediately. Try growing chives, onions or garlic around the carrots to mask the smell or you could put fleece (available from garden centres or some hardware shops) over the carrots after sowing.
