Blake – “It’s down to the fans and us, they tell us what they like us to sing, and so it’s all based on that, but also what proves popular in concerts too.” Ann – Eight years together, still enjoying it? Blake – “More than ever really, I mean now there are just the three of us, it’s like a new beginning really, and so it’s meant looking at things afresh and new directions.“ Ann – Some famous names on the new album too... tough choice to make? Blake – We have Camilla Kerslake, Chris Robshaw, Olga Kurylenko, Rebecca Newman, so many great names, and wonderful singers... We all feel blessed that they agreed to join us, and we hope all the fans love it too.” Ann – Do you all have choices, and who else would you love to duet with? Blake – “Barbra Streisand would be good, as well as someone like Lady Ga Ga I think mixing it up is the key to keeping the style fresh and fun.”
Blake – “We all want to record a Bond theme, I mean we all look reasonable, and think it’s about time a British group had a crack at it, so why not us. We need someone to champion us, so will you do it Ann?” Ann – At the launch, you had some big named guests too – Cameron Mackintosh, and stars of Call the Midwife... Do you get nervous when they are in the audience? Blake – “Yes and now of course if Sir Cameron wants to offer all us leads in one of his wonderful musicals, then of course that would be tricky for us, but we know he is a great fan of our work.” Ann – What are the typical Blake fans? Blake – “Well Stylish, lovers of good music, and above all, impeccable taste (laugh)” Ann – What is next then gentlemen? Martin Lewis Use the savings fountain to boost your savings Savings rates are spit-worthily low; but it could get even worse as the UK base rate doesn’t look likely to rise till late 2015 and ‘swap rates’ - which influence fixed saving rates - have plummeted recently. Yet there are weapons in a saver’s arsenal - most don’t use them, it’s time to change that. As an aside, before you start saving, do pay off any expensive debts, as they’re costing you more than saving will pay you. This is often true for mortgage too – read my full www.mse.me/mortgageoverpay guide to see if it’s worth it. My savings fountain is designed to maximise your interest on every penny of your cash. It works because different types of savings have different rules on how much you can put in and when. Think of it like a champagne fountain - put your cash into the best-paying savings vehicle possible, then when that’s full and overflowing, fill up the next best, and so on. The top tier... earn up to 5% easy-access via ‘bank account’ savings. Some bank accounts’ in-credit rates now smash easy access savings accounts and ISAs. They’re done as a loss leader to entice new banking customers - yet if you’re prepared to switch account, you gain. Aim to cover as much as possible at decent rates. - Earn 3% AER on £3,000-£20,000: With the www.santander.co.uk 123 account. There’s a £2/mth fee, but this is usually more than covered as it also pays cashback on bills.
- Earn 4% AER on £4,000-£5,000: With the www.lloydsbank.com Club bank account. - Earn 5% AER for a year on £2,500: With the www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account. - Earn 5% AER on up to £2,000: With the www. tsb.co.uk/ Classic Plus bank account. Next trickle into regular savings... save monthly to earn up to 6%. Regular savings accounts often pay high interest as it’s only on a small amount for a short time. While the top rate’s slightly more than bank accounts, because you need to put cash in each month, you’d need to trickle it across from your top savings account anyway - hence why it’s second. - Bank linked 6% regular savings. If you’re a First Direct bank customer, it offers a linked regular savings account at 6% AER fixed for a year you need to put £25-£300 in per month and can vary that each month. The Lloyds current account has a similar linked account at 4%. - Anyone can earn 3.05%. The www.leedsbuildingsociety.co.uk Regular Saver pays 3.05% AER variable if you pay in £50 to £250 every month for a year. Got more? Pour it into a cash ISA 2.6% taxfree with access. Cash ISAs are just savings accounts where the interest isn’t taxed (so you keep all of it). Anyone over 16 in the UK can put up to £15,000 in an ISA each tax year (6 April 5 April) and once in, it stays tax-free year after year.

With fixed-rate cash ISAs, unlike normal savings, you can access the cash within the term - though you’ll lose some interest in penalties. Yet even if you withdraw early, these can still be winners. - Top fixed-rate cash ISA: www.coventrybuildingsociety.co.uk pays 2.6% AER fixed for four years, but you can withdraw by closing the account early and the penalty is just 120 days’ interest. So withdraw after 1yr and you’d get 1.75%, after 2yrs 2.18% and after 3yrs 2.32%. This means as long as you keep cash in for 10 months, you’d earn more than the best easy access deal anyway. - Top fix for cash ISA transfers: All those that allow you to transfer old cash ISAs in as well as new money have heftier penalties. So here the aim should be to fix for a length you need. Top 1yr is www.postoffice.co.uk at 1.7% AER, 2yr is Barclays at 2.02% AER, 3yr is Virgin at 2.15% AER. - Need access to your cash, 1.55% easy access cash ISA. www.bmsavings.co.uk allows new money and lets you transfer in old cash ISAs, of its 1.55% AER variable interest 1.05% is a bonus for a year. See www.mse.me/ISAs for more ISA options Now consider locking cash away - earn 2.5% in fixed rate savings. If you’ve still money, next consider whether you’re prepared to lock it away without access - if so, you can fix with a locked-in rate that’s usually higher. Do bear in mind if rates rise over the term you can’t switch, so at the moment I don’t list fixes longer than three years. Top fixed-rate savings: www.krbs.com 1yr fix pays 1.9% AER, min £1,000. The top 3yr fix is www.investec.co.uk (min £25,000), which pays 2.5% AER unless the Bank of England

base rate plus 1% is higher, in which case you get that. If you’ve less, www.shawbrook.co.uk Bank is a 3yr fix at 2.5% AER (min £5,000). Got any left? Earn 1.4% in the top easy access normal savings. Now we’re down to the bog standard easy access payers. Here you can put in big amounts and withdraw cash at leisure. Top normal savings: The Post Office pays 1.4% or over-50s can get 1.55% with www.saga. co.uk (min £1,000). Before you rush off to pour cash in the fountain, a few key tips... You pay tax on savings interest (if not in an ISA). Higher rate taxpayers lose 40% of their interest to the taxman, basic rate 20%. Non-taxpayers - cash ISAs may still be worth it. There’s no tax gain, but they often pay higher rates than equivalent savings, cash ISA fixes have more access and if you become a taxpayer again, the cash will then be protected. Part of a couple? Put savings in name of the lower-rate taxpayer. If one of you pays tax at a higher rate, providing you trust each other put non-ISA savings in the name of the lower taxpayer and you’ll take home more. For those who aren’t married/civil partners, there is a tiny risk if one of you died within seven years of this that there’d be inheritance tax on it. Know your savings safety. Provided your money is in a UK-regulated savings account, the first £85,000 per person, per financial institution is Government guaranteed. If you’ve got more, spread it. Check your local credit union. On rare occasions these beat the rates above, check if there’s one near you. @MoneySavingExpert

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer

The Mitsubishi PHEV may look like a normal Outlander, but hiding behind the mask is the most technologically advanced Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on the car market. ‘PHEV’ stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It means the SUV can be fed by electricity from a domestic socket to power electric motors that are supported by a petrol engine. Two electric motors drive the front and rear axle separately while batteries allow electricity-only driving at up to 75mph. Beyond that pace, or should the battery pack drain to less than 30 per cent of its charge, a 2.0-litre petrol engine kicks in to life. It acts as a generator to help the PHEV accomplish a total driving range of approximately 500 miles on a full tank. The Outlander PHEV is also the most fuel efficient fourwheel drive. That’s astounding for a family-size car that tips the scales at a bulky 1810kg, and seats five. As a global first, the Outlander PHEV also has no direct adversary. The closest is the Lexus RX450h, though it can’t be recharged via a powerpoint and cannot run on electricity alone. Befitting its first-class status in the Outlander range, the PHEV is very well stacked with kit. It has 18 inch alloy wheels, dusk-sensing auto headlamps, touch-screen with satellite navigation and reversing camera, climate control, parking sensors and seven airbags. The flagship GX4hs was driven for this review and the model comes with additional features such as adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning. The latter squeals at you if it detects you’ve drifted across the road’s white dividing lines. If you’re used to a standard car, it’s going to be a peculiar experience the first time you gently push the gearstick over
to the right into ‘D’ and drive off in silence. Even sharp jabs of the throttle produce the same amount of hush, though that has its rewards – the audio unit is only average, so at least there’s plenty of clarity in the quiet cabin. The Outlander PHEV isn’t rapid from a standing start, but tremendous pulling power makes up for it once you get going. Initial acceleration suffers simply because of the heavy jumble of battery and electric motors that the standard Outlander doesn’t possess. When you need to recharge on the move, all you need to do is hit the ‘Charge’ switch behind the joystick, which fires up the four-cylinder engine to replenish the battery. A single charge via a powerpoint takes five hours, which could cost you next to nothing depending on the hours you choose to plug in to the grid. Inside, it’s pretty much standard Outlander layout apart from the joystick-style gearstick and electric charging buttons. The tachometer has also been replaced by a power meter, which shows when you’re charging-up the battery, using the battery, or running the engine. Behind the wheel, body control is good for an SUV of this weight as the Outlander PHEV profits from Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). NEW MILTON DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY
Art and Science are not two separate cultures, despite modern ideas on education, and at our next meeting Sally Hoban will demonstrate links between the two over a period of 600 years. ‘From Michelangelo to You – The Story of Art and Science’ will show examples of how artists throughout history have fused both disciplines. She starts with the brilliant men of The Lunar Society when in the 18th century such notable members as Matthew Boulton and Josiah Wedgwood not only made exquisite Sally Hoban objects for daily life but also extended the discoveries of science. This illuminating lecture is at 10.30am on Thursday 9th April at the Memorial Centre, Whitefield Road. It will be preceded at 10.15am by the AGM so members are requested to arrive in good time for coffee before the meeting. Visitors are welcome at a charge of £5. The Adventures of Nellie
The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Nellie was ready for a break this month. After all it was half term and Hayden was off school, so what better excuse than to ‘get away’ for a few days. We live in such a gorgeous area it was difficult to choose where to go. Nellie eventually decided to take us just along the coast, through the New Forest, to the Shorefield Country Park near Milford on Sea. As the weather has been a bit unpredictable, and still a bit on the chilly side, we booked a small chalet with heating and Nellie parked herself proudly outside. I have to say that Nellie did well, the chalet was really good value for money and just what we needed for a few days off. There are some rather grand looking log cabins as well as impressive caravans on site with hot tubs outside, so maybe we will try one of those next time? Anyway what we had was perfect for what we wanted. We did arrive a bit early, all very keen to have our time off, so Nellie and her whistling kettle provided us with a lovely cuppa, while we waited for

Of course Hayden was very excited about the pool, so once we were settled in and bags were unpacked, (were we really only staying for a few days??) off we set for the leisure facilities. While Hayden practiced his hand stands at the deep end and generally glided around like I will never be able to do, I had a relaxed steam bath, sauna and jacuzzi. Much more fun… at least at 50! A caravan park from this viewpoint is ideal - it caters for all ages. What I liked about this park also is the setting. Located in a wonderful forest of trees, much wildlife, (I am sure we saw a woodpecker) and fields, yet the sea is literally ten minutes walk away. Saturday was glorious with blue skies and those well known English fleecy white clouds. Love it. We marched off for the coast, doing a short Geocache enroute. The ‘treasure’ this time was tiny and Stephen was the winner, finding it very well hidden in a bench.

23 23 Once we got to the sea there was a large banner warning us not to swim. Though it was sunny it was still a little chilly, so that made me smile. I then looked more closely at the banner and was fascinated by the iron sea defences that were very dangerously placed under the water at this time. That got me thinking about our coast line. This beach is full of pebbles and the waves were crashing vociferously onto them. If you close your eyes it is really quite dramatic. There is in fact a lot of work having to be done due to erosion, moving landscapes and these old sea defences. I discovered that the rock in this area is softer than that near Old Harry Rocks and there is a whole Shoreline Management Plan to help preserve our coastline all the way from Hurst Spit at Milford on Sea to Durlston Head near Swanage, including the bays in Poole and Bournemouth. That is all quite an undertaking! It is surprising really what we take for granted. The whole concept got me thinking about old times, the future and life in general, but that is a bit deep for the Adventures of Nellie! We had a whale of a time, not literally as we were not allowed to swim, throwing stones in

No Swimming?? I was so looking forward... the water, running enthusiastically away from the waves as they thundered towards us. Hayden got pretty wet and thought that was hysterical. He couldn’t stop laughing. There are many beach huts along this stretch and some are delightfully painted while others are quite dilapidated. From what I read there is a whole question over these English Seaside getaways and their safety in this area. I certainly would be sorry to see them go. One local artist was collecting smooth pebbles for her next project, coming down from her little wooden hideaway onto the beach with her bucket. How exiting. Finally we made it to…the café! It was perfect especially as it has a park for the children. “Needles Eye Café” it is called, obviously due to its stunning views of the coast and indeed The Needles on the Isle of Wight. After a good lunch, rest and relaxation, we set off back to the chalet and Nellie waiting patiently for us. We didn’t get to Hurst Castle and will have to save that for another trip. The fresh air, walk and wonderful views were just what we needed. What an amazing place we live in. So, where will Nellie go next? By Debbie Corney

Naturally good... Apricot and passion fruit ‘flan de Queso’ with spiced roasted pears
Ingredients for 4-6 servings: For the flan 120ml full fat milk 240ml double cream 100g full fat cream cheese 2 free range eggs 8 large moist dried apricots 1 tbsp honey One passion fruit 2 tbsp lemon juice For the roasted pears 2 pears Pinch ground cinnamon Pinch ground ginger 1 tbsp unsalted butter

1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150c. 2. Place the milk and dried apricots into a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Then remove from the heat and leave to rest for 20 minutes to let the apricots soak up some moisture and become plump. 3. Prepare the passion fruit by scraping out the seeds into a sieve above a bowl, use a metal spoon to scrape the seeds against the sieve to remove as much of the juice as possible, discard the seeds and add the juice to the mixture. 4. Place all of the ingredients for the flan into a blender and blitz on full speed for 2 minutes until all of the ingredients are well combined and smooth, pass this mixture through a sieve into a jug and then use this to fill 4 ramekins (or 6 ramekins if you want smaller portions). 5. Place the ramekins into a large roasting tray and pour in enough hot, but not boiling, water to come halfway up their outsides. (This is called a bain-marie or water bath). 6. Place the bain-marie onto the center shelf of the oven being careful not to spill any water into the ramekins which will ruin the flans (a tip to make life easier is to place the baking dish with the ramekins halfway into the oven before adding the water to the dish). 7. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until the custards are just set but still a bit wobbly in the middle. Remove the ramekins from the water and set aside to cool to room temperature. Chill until needed for at least 3 hours but preferably overnight. 8. When you are ready to serve the flans, prepare the roasted pears. Peel, core and slice the pears and place onto a baking sheet. Sprinkle the pears with the ground ginger and cinnamon and add the butter. Place into a preheated oven at 350F/180c for approximately 20 minutes until the pears are soft and the edges are turning golden brown and caramelized. 9. Spoon the roasted pears on top of the flans and serve.

Gain the upper hand now!
Spring should really be on it’s way by the end of this month and there’ll be plenty of jobs to keep you busy on your plot. There’s nothing quite like sowing seeds and the thrill of watching those first tiny seedlings appearing just a week or two later. Weather permitting the soil should be warm enough to be sowing outdoors in March. Your new seedlings will need all the help that you can give them if they are to flourish so don’t forget the weeding and pest control too! Jobs for March:Prepare beds for sowing by raking level when the soil is dry enough. Get a supply of containers and fill with compost ready for sowing (supermarket plastic trays containers are handy to reuse for this!) Make sure you have all the seeds you need and sort them into the order that you’ll sow them in. Plant first early potatoes later in the month. Keep on top of the weeding and pest control. Sow carrots, peas, parsnips, lettuce and radishes.
There’s no doubt that the weather during the first part of the year lived up to our expectations of a month of extremes - with mild temperatures and homes and gardens hammered by incredible rainfall. Hopefully March should see the weather settling down and Spring truly starting to emerge. Most seed packets give you some guidelines as to which month/or months are best to sow in but personally I think that it’d be a lot more helpful if they gave a little information about the temperature required, not to mention just how long germination is likely to take. Soil temperatures of at least 6º are needed for most seeds - if you don’t want to guess at this you can get a soil thermometer to check. Don’t forget that by using products such as fleece, or cloches, over your beds you can raise the temperature. Some seeds, such as parsnips, are notoriously slow to germinate taking up to 3 weeks for seedlings to appear - a good idea with slow starters like these is to sow quick growing crops such as radishes on either side of the row. This will help mark the rows out until your parsnips appear and the radishes will quickly be grown and ready to harvest. Take note also of the depth that the different seeds should be sown at - too shallow and they’ll either blow away or be eaten by the birds, too deep and you may bury them alive! Try to space seeds evenly, though if you sow too many you can thin out the weaker seedlings after they appear. Do remember that with many crops it

is better to sow just a few and then sow again in a few weeks time to avoid having too many ready to harvest all at once. Salad crops such as lettuce will bolt if left too long, and other vegetables which may have a short harvesting period can be enjoyed for much longer if you save the seed and sow a few in succession every few weeks. As the soil warms up for your new crops so it also warms up nicely for the weeds about now! For many people part of the attraction of growing your own is eating chemical free produce and organic methods of pest control will therefore be preferred. Little and often is best - take a quick walk around the veg patch each morning and hand pick any emerging weeds. Hoeing also works well and if you are careful not to let weeds set seed you’ll avoid a long-term problem. Of course the situation isn’t helped by the fact that your patch is likely to have large amounts of bare soil on it between widely spaced rows at this time of year. Some crops, such as potatoes will obligingly grow to ultimately block out the light and deter weeks, but if you’re really having problems then think about putting down a thick, organic, mulch to cover the bare soil. Slugs will also emerge to attack your young seedlings - there’s no end of organic ways to do battle from hand picking at night and beer traps to watering in nematodes. Strike early and gain the upper hand!

Hampshire’s railway history inspires duo of new plays This Spring, Hampshire based theatre company Forest Forge will be touring two brand new plays, together entitled Leaves on a Line, inspired by Hampshire’s railway history. Leaves on a Line is made up of two individual stories, of the young woman who abandons her baby on a deserted railway platform and of the older woman who finds it. The abandoned railway lines, heritage stations and derelict platforms of Hampshire’s railway history form the backdrop of these two new plays. Artistic Director of Forest Forge and Director of Leaves on a Line, Kirstie Davis, comments: “This has been a fascinating journey into the history of the Hampshire Railways, which has inspired lots of beautiful and witty stories about those moments in a person’s life when everything could change. I last worked with Dinos on the delight that was Bloom (Forest Forge play produced in 2012) and we have had such fun exploring this subject and meeting people who have then written us letters answering the question: What are you waiting for? Leaves on a Line is an emotional rollercoaster that will make you recognise those moments in your own life when tracks converge and in an instant everything you know could change forever.” Leaves on a Line has been written by Dinos Aristidou, who comments: “It’s always exciting to write for Forest Forge to create original theatre

that will get audiences excited about theatre and that will play in interesting venues. Meeting and working with members of the community and hearing about their experiences of the railways, that form the backdrop of this piece, has been fascinating. The railways provide a lot of material that works well theatrically because they mirror the arrivals and departures of our own lives and the moments of waiting and choice.” Leaves on a Line will star three actors new to Forest Forge: Madeleine Brolly, Ed Sheridan, and Leonie Spilsbury.
