Be spellbound by orchids Enter a bewitching world of men and monkeys, ladies and lizards, frogs and flies – our summer orchids. Summer is a time for wild flower meadows - hillsides ablaze with colour and a-buzz with insects. The superstars of the wild flower world are the orchids, and now is the best time to go out and enjoy their glamorous allure. Of the fifty or so species that are native to the UK, some are surprisingly common and widespread, while others are our most elusive rarities, found only in a select handful of special places. The beautiful bee orchid, whose flower famously mimics a furry-bodied bee to fool its pollinator, is actually amongst the more common species, often turning up on road verges as well as grasslands and open ground around gravel pits. It’s more understated cousin, the fly orchid pulls off a similar trick on the edge of woodland. Look for the bizarre bird’s-nest orchid deeper in the woods. Growing up from the dense leaf litter, the bird’s-nest orchid is a parasite which steals all its nutrients from the roots of trees. As a result it has dispensed with the green chlorophyll that other plants use to make their food, and is a ghostly creamy-brown colour all over. On chalk grassland, look for the dense pink flower spikes of pyramidal orchids and the taller, cylindrical spikes of fragrant orchid, which

smell sweetly, especially in the evening. Less ‘fragrant’ and more ‘smelly’ is the lizard orchid. A rarity found at just a few sites in the south of England, this giant among orchids has a spike of gorgeously twisty, spiral-lipped ‘lizard’ flowers, and smells strongly of billy goats. Search online for where you can visit wildflower meadows – nature reserves like Noar Hill, St Catherine’s Hill, and Ron Ward’s Meadow are good places to start. Be very careful where you tread - as well as the obvious flower spikes, there will be plenty of non-flowering leaf rosettes which you should avoid trampling. Tempting as it may be, don’t pick the flowers. Orchids look their best out in the wild, and some species are legally protected: you could be breaking the law. Orchid facts: Orchids can lay dormant in the soil for years waiting for conditions to be right to grow. They each need their own type of ‘friendly fungus’ in the soil before they can grow. The root of some orchids, like the early purple, has been used as a food and medicine for hundreds of years. Top Five must see attractions at the 2016 Show The 2016 New Forest and Hampshire County Show is taking place on 26th, 27th and 28th July at New Park Brockenhurst. In order to help you plan your day and make the most of your time at the Show we have put together a list of the top five must see attractions. Metropolitan Mounted Police We are delighted to be welcoming the Metropolitan Mounted Police to the Show for the first time this year as the main ring attraction. They will be wowing the crowds with their fun, fast moving Activity Ride each day in the Hoburne East Ring. Visitors will witness riders removing their saddles and jackets whilst their horses clear a selection of bush jumps. Their breath-taking performance also involves horses jumping through rings of fire and through large paper walls. Don’t miss their incredible performance at the Show. 2. A Taste of Tibet... in the New Forest! It’s not everyday you get to meet a Tibetan monk! A rare opportunity to experience the unique culture of Tibet comes to the New Forest in July. Eight Tibetan Buddhist monks will take residence in Lyndhurst Community Centre from Monday 18th July until Sunday 24th. The monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, living in exile in South India to tour the UK and Europe each year supported by the UK Trust bring a selection of their arts,music,sacred dances and chants to captivate audiences wherever they visit.From cathedrals to village halls, Glastonbury to Jerusalem, they bring the culture of Tibet alive. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is Patron of the UK Trust. Central to this week will be the construction of a sand mandala, a wonderful art form that takes six days to create by painstakingly use metal funnels called chagpurs to place millions of grains of coloured marble to finally build a representation of a Buddha’s Celestial palace that would be used in specific teachings and meditations. This is still a rare event to see outside a monastic environment and requires years of study by the monks to be able to memorise the texts required to complete the mandala. After a final blessing the mandala will eventually be ritually destroyed and the sands swept away on Sunday morning 24th in a moving and colourful ceremony that closes the week’s events. On Saturday evening 23rd the monks will be
performing an evening of sacred dances and chants that takes you into the world of monastery life. Beautiful brocade costumes, music and an accompanying commentary creates a magical evening described as ‘atmospheric’. These dances would normally performed in the Gutor celebration at the time of the Tibetan New Year. Sacred ‘mudras’, hand gestures and prayers create a magical evening entitled the Power of Compassion. Tickets for the performance are £10 available from the Centre or Eventbrite.com. Entry to the mandala is free. Throughout the week there are opportunities to sample these arts in workshops with the monks. Finally on Thursday lunchtime 21st, 30 lucky guests will be served a typical monastery lunch cooked by the monks. Share a meal with the monks and sample Tibetan steamed momos! Scholarships for Durlston Court Pupils Durlston Court pupils are celebrating Scholarship Examination success once again this year as an impressive range of Scholarship offers to Senior Schools have been received. BARBECUED LAMB RECIPE
As summer approaches, you may find yourself wishing to utilise the outdoor barbecue. This recipe offers you the option to either use this for a BBQ or to cook inside and serve with your choice of vegetables.
Ingredients 1 lemon (juice and zest) 2tbsp soft light brown sugar 125ml olive oil 8tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves (crushed) 4tbsp mint (chopped) 400g half boneless leg of lamb
Equipment: Barbecue or griddle pan Method: To make the marinade mix together the lemon juice and zest with the sugar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and add seasoning. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and then mix in the mint and garlic. Lay the meat in a deep tray. Pour in half the marinade over the top of the meat and turn it over to coat it on both sides. Put the rest of the marinade to one side to use as dressing later. Then, cover with cling film and choose to leave it for 1 hour or alternatively overnight in the fridge. After, remove the lamb from the fridge, shake off any excess marinade back into the tray before inserting a skewer that goes from one corner to the opposite. Do this again with another skewer but in the opposite direction. You can either cook the lamb on a barbecue or a griddle pan and cook on a medium heat. Cook for between 15-20 minutes. Make sure to turn the lamb frequently until pink or cook for longer depending on your preference. Once you have finished, let the lamb rest for 10 minutes and remove the skewers. Serve with your choice of vegetables and pour over the rest of the marinade.

The Adventures of Nellie The Hampshire Publications Camper Van Now you all know that Nellie, the Hampshire Publications Campervan, is getting on a bit. She has aches and pains from time to time and last month her “ticker” just wouldn’t get started. A new pace maker (alias battery), was called in, the surgeons got to work (otherwise known as Longham Motor Engineers) and Nellie is now able to take us out again. Thank goodness! Such a relief. Well, my Dad is 82 years old and still goes match fishing, lugging his gear up and down the banks, giving the younger men a good run for their money. Nellie is taking a leaf out of his book. In January this year Dad had his second knee operation - We now call him the Bionic Man. When I rang him all excited about us all going back to Santorini in Greece, you can imagine that he hesitated somewhat. My Mum was more than concerned. Taking after my Dad and not wanting to give

up on the idea, I kept ringing to see how he was doing. I knew Dad was determined to make it. Just like Nellie, who is afterall over 200,000 km’s old, I believe that the power of the mind as well as good medical care and good nutrition (diesel in Nellie’s case...) can overcome a lot. Santorini was a great holiday and one of the highlights was a trip to the live volcano. I never thought Dad would make it, but he did! This is what Dad wrote to his surgeon recently, who requested photos for his website... “On the 11th January 2016 I had a total knee replacement to my left leg which was carried out by Mr H Sharma. I was in hospital for 5 days. (My right knee was replaced some 7 or 8 years ago.) In late February I decided I was fit enough to go on the Family holiday due to commence on 2nd April 2016 to the Greek Island of Santorini. On the 2nd day of this holiday we booked a full day boat trip which would take us out to the various islands. Our first stop

27 was a Volcanic one which entailed a 1,500 meter ascent over black volcanic rock and cinders, about 2 hours there and back. The family did not expect me to attempt this, but I said if I have to turn back, I will. However, I made it to the summit and back, just some 81 days after the operation! And no after effects! To say how very grateful I am to Mr Sharma is an understatement!” Stan Outlaw.... Dad! So just like my Dad (who I am very proud of), Nellie will continue to take us out, overcoming whatever ailments. We hope she inspires you to do the same. Getting out and about in the fresh air is a great therapy. On that note, last month Nellie took us to “The Reptile Centre” near Lyndhurst in the New Forest. Oh boy those snakes sent shivers down Nellie’s chassis and the burping toads certainly made her chuckle. At the centre you can discover more about British reptiles and amphibians and how they are being conserved in the New Forest. They have in fact the only collection of all the native lizards, snakes, frogs and toads, including

Britain’s only venomous snake - the adder - and rarest lizard - the sand lizard. It is a great place for adults and children to wander around, observe and learn and even take a picnic on the forest trail. Nellie, with her ‘new ticker’ thoroughly enjoyed driving there, through our wonderful terrain of fields and trees surrounded by gorgeous horses and ponies. Hayden loved taking photographs en route as we slowly motored along. Oh those lazy sunny days, don’t we just love ‘em! The coffee on arrival from Nellie’s whistling kettle was just what I needed. So yes, Nellie has had a busy month. There are lots of activities in July and August so we will not be bored and Nellie will have no time to rest, that is for sure! Where will she take us next…? Renault Kadjar By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk
The French-made Renault Kadjar is one rung higher up the greasy pole than many of its competitors. You see, there are lots of Qashqai clones on the market, but the Kadjar genuinely shares the popular Nissan’s platform and power units. What’s more, the car is cheaper to buy than the fashionable Qashqai and has that extra sprinkling of French flair. The front-wheel-drive 1.6 dCi 130 Signature Nav, on test here, is impressive. The turbo-charged oil-burner starts out fairly meekly, but then things under the bonnet hot up, resulting in plenty of mid-range pull. This is satisfying because it means you don’t need to work the gears hard to utilise the clout on tap. Push the Renault into twisty country lanes and the car stays bonded to the tarmac. There’s a little bit of body roll noticeable, but it never disturbs ride comfort. In fact, the Kadjar arouses confidence in this sort of driving environment due to its consistently well-weighted steering. The brakes are excellent, although their urgency takes you by surprise on occasion. However, a capacity for quickly scrubbingoff-speed is no bad thing. The gearshift-action is a little heavy, and some diesel-din sneaks into the interior when the whip is cracked, but this Renault is not the sort of car bought by out-andout driving enthusiasts. It is a vehicle that will spend the majority of its time in town, on the school run or on family outings. Unsurprisingly then, the Kadjar is comfy for a family-of-four and handles scarred, urban road surfaces well, due to its nicelycushioned suspension set-up. The boot is better than the Qashqai’s, in terms of load space, and it has the same ingenious
flooring that can be elevated, dropped, or used as a partition to keep your possessions from tumbling about. Indeed, the Kadjar is a pleasant place to be, due, in no small part, to it having one of finest cabin’s in its class. From a tech point of view, the glass is just as full. The sat-nav system is a doddle and – in this flagship model – the car comes fully loaded with a topquality Bose sound system, Bluetooth, faux leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. Definitely more important than cabin toys, is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected. Equipment includes traffic sign recognition, lane-departure assist and even parking sensors at the front and the rear of the car. As mentioned, the Signature Nav is the top of the tree model, so unless you really need all the trimmings, you’ll enjoy the Kadjar just as much in its slightly lower-down-the ladder ‘Dynamique’ guise. The car is still well-appointed and represents excellent value for money, whether bought outright on a PCP finance deal. To be honest, it’s hard to justify buying a Nissan Qashqai now that the Kadjar is on the scene. The car is good-looking, it’s great to drive, it has a bigger boot and its price-tag is lower. Unless you’re desperate to have the Qashqai moniker ornamenting your drive, save yourself some cash and go for the French marque instead.

On Your Plot Start them young
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into
the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.
