A little bit of the Ukraine comes to Swanage Watch out for the Ukrainian song and dance troupe – ZOZULENKA – in Swanage in October! This all singing, all dancing group of young people, all under the age of 16, come from School Number 20 in Cherkassy, Ukraine and they begin their UK tour next month. It will be our pleasure to welcome them to Swanage and to Emmanuel Baptist Church on 19 and 20 October for two free concerts – one for our town’s schools on the afternoon of Thursday 19th and one for everyone in the evening of Friday 20th. This colourful, energetic troupe of youngsters sing in both English and
Ukrainian and in between songs and dances, tell stories of their lives. Around 300 Swanage schoolchildren will crowd into Emmanuel on the Thursday afternoon to be entertained Ukrainian style and those same 300 seats will be available for the evening performance on the Friday at 7.00pm which is free. No tickets required – just go along and enjoy the performance! At the end, the children will collect any donations in buckets, which will all go to the Hope Now charity which sends aid and provides assistance and teaching in the Ukraine and other eastern European countries.

Further opportunity to help shape the future of Purbeck An additional public consultation is to be held on the plan which will determine development for the next 16 years in the district. Purbeck District Council is currently updating the Purbeck Local Plan. The updated plan will determine where development can take place in the district, including locations for new homes and jobs. This brings significant challenges for the Council in seeking to preserve the beauty and diverse landscape of Purbeck, whilst also providing for future needs and enabling local communities to thrive. Following previous consultations in 2015 and 2016, the Council will run a further, district-wide consultation to help inform the plan. The consultation is likely to take place later this year and will provide an additional opportunity for everyone to submit their views on potential future development in the district. Following the last consultation in 2016, Purbeck District Council has been working on updates to evidence related to the plan. Once the studies have been completed, the Council will be able to confirm the exact date of the consultation, hopefully in late 2017. Councillor Barry Quinn, Deputy Leader of Purbeck District Council, said: “The Local Plan is an important
document that will help shape the future of Purbeck, so it is important we get it right. “There will be an opportunity for people to submit their views to help shape the plan. These views are important to us and we will be encouraging everyone with an interest in the future of the district to take part.” The Council is planning to send information about the consultation to all households in the district, enabling as many people as possible to get involved. Councillor Quinn continued: “We will be including information about the consultation in our Council magazine, About Purbeck, giving every household the opportunity to respond. As well as opportunities to submit views in writing, people will be able to share ideas with others through local meetings”. Talking about Wildlife...
Every Child Wild It’s a common topic of conversation: are we spending too much time inside with technology, rather than getting out into our natural environment? Young or old, we all spend time in front of screens, for work and pleasure, but many of us do remember playing outside when we were young. However, there are some statistics that suggest children aren’t spending as much time with nature as perhaps their parents did. In a recent survey by England’s largest outdoor learning project, Natural Connections, it was found that only 8% of school age children in England get out of their classrooms and into green spaces. 92% of schools said spending time with nature improves pupils’ health and wellbeing, and engages them with learning. In a You Gov study it was found that 78% of parents are concerned that children don’t spend though time interacting with nature and wildlife. So, Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) has decided to do something to address this disconnection with nature. We want to give thousands of children in Dorset a safe place to learn, laugh, watch or simply relax, surrounded by nature – all the things that many of us took for granted when we were young. It’s called the WildHub, at DWT’s Kingcombe Centre in West Dorset, surrounded with 180 hectares of the Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve. The WildHub will have three main elements. An innovative outdoor classroom, complete with benches and a wooden chest full of wild activities such as books and activity sheets, a new wildlife exploration zone and play area for families, and a new pavilion
boardwalk that runs down to the river Hooke – the perfect way to explore this wonderful place. All of these elements to ‘wild play’ will provide a safe, immersive environment to give children the confidence to explore the countryside and wildlife around them. Technology is a wonderful thing, and can support a child’s understanding of the world, but we want them to experience wildlife and nature in real life, rather than just watching it on TV. Purbeck villages receive funding to kick-start housing projects Two new Purbeck Community Land Trusts are to receive funding to help meet local housing needs and deliver affordable housing. Purbeck District Council has agreed to provide the financial support of up to £50,000 each to Corfe Castle Community Land Trust and Langton Matravers Community Land Trust. Earlier in 2017, the Council received a grant from the Government of £910,456 from the Community Housing Fund to help address the effects of second homes in the district by kick-starting affordable housing projects. Councillor Laura Miller, Housing Portfolio Holder, Purbeck District Council, said: “Finding affordable housing that local people can afford is a real problem in the district, so this funding was very much welcomed. “It enables local community groups to be directly involved in the planning and delivery of affordable housing which responds to local needs. “We hope the funding of schemes such as these will give other communities the confidence to apply for funding to develop their own projects.” The two villages are the first to apply for funding in the district. Corfe Castle Community Land Trust is in negotiations with a landowner for a proposal to build ten to twelve homes for local people to rent. The funding will be used to complete the formation of the Community Benefit Company; support the business planning process for the company; complete the
feasibility study for the proposed site; and seek planning approval. The Langton Matravers Community Land Trust Limited became a Community Benefit Society in March 2017. A small number of sites in Langton Matravers are under consideration for development of ten homes for rent for local people. The grant will be used to support the business planning process of the company; complete feasibility studies of possible sites; and seek planning approval. The Wessex Community Land Trust Project is providing advice and support to both Land Trusts. Anyone interested in forming a community group to explore delivering affordable housing in Purbeck is invited to contact Chris McDermott at Purbeck District Council on 01929 556561.

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Nellie has had the time of life recently travelling all over England, quite literally. In the last two months she has taken us camping at Norden Farm near Corfe Castle with my parents, then she took us to Cornwall, Holywell Bay to be precise, for a surf life-saving competition, then to Hull for a family wedding and finally to the Centenary Caravan and Camping Club in the New Forest with Stephen’s Dad and sister! What fun. Well mostly… The drive to Cornwall is one of Nellie’s favourites. Once on the road to Dorchester and beyond she knows she is on holiday. The coast road from Bridport is pretty stunning with expansive views of the sea and rolling English countryside. We always stop at Charmouth to have a cuppa and gaze into

Nellie with her new pal Movelite the glistening blue depths, knowing we can “forget all about it” for just a little while. For a whole week we can leave any troubles and worries behind. Bliss. Nellie’s engine was purring. Sometime later with singing at its height, we arrived at the Caravan and Camping Club site at Treamble Valley. Unpacking all our ‘stuff’ we realised we had made the big mistake of putting the Kombi Ex awning away while it was damp… and we hadn’t dried it out. Yes, big mistake. The awning was musty and not in good condition. Then the rains started and it just did not stop. Heavy, constant rain. I woke up wet through on the left side! Deciding the best thing was to take refuge in good old Nellie, I knew I needed to check Hayden to see if he was dry. He woke up to his ‘weird’ mother patting his sleeping bag, wondering why I was checking his legs were ok!? I had to see the funny side of that. Fortunately, Hayden was totally dry. So now we had a musty, damp awning with a week to go. Hayden had a competition coming up and there was no way that Nellie was going to chance more sleepless night as the weather forecast was not looking at all good. Off to Newquay it was then. A new ‘blow up’ awning later, another full day packing and

23 unpacking, and we were once again all set. A rather exhausting start to a blissful week away. Do you ever wonder why we do this to ourselves? It did remind me of “Carry on Camping” only I don’t have quite the same laugh as Barbara Windsor. I am missing a couple of other characteristics too… Holywell Bay park was fun. Nellie wanted to join in the go-karts and I am sure she would have won, but sadly she was disqualified at the starting block. The foot golf was almost impossible and we did laugh. I kept telling the boys I had won until I owned up to picking up the ball at one point and throwing it through the gap, instead of kicking it. Oh well. Nellie really liked Padstow. The quay there is atmospheric with all the little stalls, street sellers braiding girl’s hair, boats and ice creams. A real sea-side treat. The sea in Cornwall is much more active than here in Dorset and Hampshire. The waves pound onto the sand with white fighting sea horses that hurl towards you. I can see why many beaches have RNLI experts at the ready, watching you. The National Surf Life Saving Competition was held on Holywell Bay. The event is so exiting with teams from all over the country. Some of these competitors surf six days a week, including the winter months. Hayden is part of the Youth Team, Branksome Chine, and they did really well but not as well as the Branksome Masters had done the previous two days! It is no mean
Much more relaxing end to the holidays...
Battling against the ocean waves feat swimming against the tide over crashing waves on a small board around the buoys and back again to run on the beach to the finish line. I take my hat off to them, or should I say my ‘dry robe’? Nellie was suitably impressed with them all. Once this was all over Nellie had to drive us all the way to Hull to my cousin’s wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies, wet suits and surf boards, next to wedding dresses, satin shoes and a fascinator. Hilarious and only us Brits could do this. As I have said Nellie is a fun loving girl who adapts to many situations and is always ready for an adventure. Life is for living to the full and Nellie smiles her way through it. The wedding was a great success and it was wonderful to catch up with everyone. We managed to keep Nellie off the booze. After all she was doing the driving! We were home for just one week when Nellie set off again and took us to the New Forest Centenary Club to meet Stephen’s Dad and sister. This was much more relaxing with wonderful sunshine and a fantastic end to our summer exploits. The gorgeous bright yellow Jessie Phyllis (named after her two grandmothers) was there. This is Nellie’s retro style VW friend who belongs to Stephen’s sister and both she and Nellie sunbathed to their hearts content dreaming about what they would do next summer. Tastes so good... Protein Pudding (Dairy Free)
A great, light dairy-free option which can be served as breakfast, or a tasty pudding treat Ingredients for 2 servings 2 large eggs 80g chocolate protein powder 2tsp raw cacao 2 tsp baking powder 1 banana Berries / natural yogurt to serve
1. Mash the banana in a bowl and then add all the other ingredients, mixing thoroughly. 2. Coat two ramekins in coconut oil (this mixture makes two large or four smaller servings) 3. Add the mixture to the ramekin 4. Microwave on high for about a minute then repeat once or twice more until the top is firm and a knife comes out clean 5. Let the pudding cool, turn out and serve with the berries and yogurt.

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Volvo V90 R-Design By Tim Barnes-Clay, www.carwriteups.co.uk Volvo estates have come a long way since their ‘wardrobe on wheels’ image. We all knew they were safe and comfortable; they just weren’t sexy. That all changed some years ago, and the last V70 looked great; perhaps even better than its saloon sibling, the S80. Then in 2016, the V90 and the booted S90 came along; two stunning cars with more than a hint of sporting appeal woven into the luxury, ride comfort and space that Volvos always offer. The models have been a success in the short time they’ve been out – but the V90 is the one that most people favour. As an estate car, it’s more practical, even though the Swedish car maker has made the load area slightly smaller than the previous V70’s. For those who like versatility and don’t want the ‘conservative’ estate car image, Volvo has recently put its R-Design stamp on the V90. This means you can still drive an estate car, but one that looks hunkered down and stimulating. Yes, stimulating – who’d have thought a Volvo could have that effect? The R-Design flavour has always given Volvos that extra something – it’s made the cars spicier to look at and hotter in the way they handle. The V90 R-Design is a genuine looker – a great piece of artwork all round. Its kerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm lowered ride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and flashy 18-inch alloy wheels. The jazziness continues inside, with semi-electrically operated leather and nubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, a vivid LED driver’s display, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates.
My test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a 2.0litre turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a well-judged output for regular commuting. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5 seconds, but it is prudent, too. If you see over 60mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be taken aback. The V90 is refreshing compared with its rear-wheel drive German equals. It’s driven by its front wheels, and is nimbler to wield. The Volvo feels sprightlier, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering and while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from overwhelming, due to how acquiescent it is. Because of the R-Design’s lowered, firmer suspension set-up, the V90 R-Design will corner quickly without perceptible body lean. However, the drawback is that there’s no option to alter the suspension on the fly. Mind you, air suspension can be substituted when you buy the car new, although it will cost you £1,500 for the privilege. On the regular non-R-Design V90s you’re offered a more cushioned ride. But if you’re determined to go for a sporty estate, and don’t mind a lower, firmer system, then the stock V90 R-Design is an excellent choice.
