Dear Swanage, Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed… in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done… maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws or new lighting to keep out the long winter evenings. Don’t forget you can treat yourself too… with a massage, a meal out or a short break away. Here in The Swanage Oracle we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the Mantovani DVD and two tickets for the performance is Mr J. Talking about wildlife with
Red Squirrels The much beloved red squirrel is the only native squirrel to Britain and a quintessential part of our natural heritage. This charming mammal has been in steep decline in Britain for several decades, and may even be under the threat of extinction. This is mainly due to the introduction of the Am erican grey squirrel, which has a higher survival rate in various habitats and also carries a disease known as Squirrelpox Virus, which is fatal to red squirrels only. The red squirrels are lively but tiny; the adults only weigh about 250 to 350 grams. They sport long bushy tails which h elp th em b ala n c e w he n jum p i n g amongst trees, and ear tufts, which become more noticeable in the winter. The reddish brown coat moults twice a year, the winter coat being darker and thicker than the summer one. The red squirrels are at home in both coniferous and broad-leaved woodland and build their nests, known as dreys, in trees. They are elusive and solitary by nature, but do sometimes socialise and share their dreys with other squirrels.

101 Non-Emergency Number Goes Live in Dorset The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number went live on Monday 19th September 2011. Members of the public in Dorset must now ring 101 to contact Dorset Police for non-urgent enquiries. The new 1 0 1 num be r has re place d the previous non-emergency police number in Dorset of 01202 or 01305 222222. This new non-emergency number has gone live across all of the police forces in the south west and the 101 number is due to be available in all police force areas of England and Wales by the end of January 2012. Chief Superintendent Colin Searle, Communications and Contact Services Commander, said: “The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number is easy to remember and will be live across the whole country next year. “It is important that the public in Dorset know what they must dial 101 to contact police in Dorset for nonurgent business from now on. “The public should call 101 to report crime, to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, to provide us with information about crimes that have been committed or to make a general enquiry.

“We are Praying for You”
ow would you react if someone said this to you? Would you be angry that God might interfere in your life? Or perhaps you blame God for many of the terrible things that happen in the world? Might you be apathetic, because you don’t believe God is there? Or would you be pleased that someone cared enough to pray for you, even though you are not sure it would do any good? Let’s get one thing straight. When Christians pray we are not trying to get God to do what we want. In fact the opposite is true – we are asking him to get us thinking and acting as he does, because he knows what is best and seeks our good. And he does answer that sort of prayer. Of course it may just be co-incidence, but people who pray often find themselves more loving towards people, find it easier to go out of their way to help people, and are more at peace with themselves and the world, even if things seem to be going sour. And the same is true for those who are being prayed for. There is not necessarily a miraculous change – though there may be – rather a gradual deep healing of the personality and circumstances that may lead to other types of healing too. Occasionally God does do something out of the ordinary. A friend who had had problems walking for a number of years was prayed for recently by two teenagers who were unaware of his problem. He immediately felt strength and proved it by running round the marquee. And he can still do it! Every Tuesday morning a group of us from different churches meets at The Old Stable in Commercial Road specifically to pray for Swanage - its people, its businesses, its public servants, all the nitty gritty issues that concern this community. People leave us details of specific issues and people they would like us to pray for. If you would like us to pray for you, your friends and family, your workplace, or a community group you are involved with – anything, really – please write it down and leave it at The Old Stable; or e-mail us on prayer@christiancentre.plus.com. SWANAGE TOWN TWINNING UPDATE Our September meeting was very well attended, everyone eager to hear who our mystery "local" guest would be for the "Desert Island Disc's", Mike Stollery had done a lot of hard work putting together a very professional programme, the format and theme tune from the original Roy Plumbley, long running radio two programme. Introducing George Willey as his guest he guided him through his early years growing up in South Wales and the journey his career would take that led him, as a journalist, coming to Swanage, this was interspaced with George's choice of music that had a special place in his heart. The evening was most enjoyable and very entertaining but at times very emotional when George recalled the tragic accident many years ago, involving six young boys playing at the far end of the beach uncovering a land mine placed as defences during the last war and although the beach had been swept many times after the war, this one had somehow been missed. On a lighter note, plans are already in place for our bi-annual visit to Rudesheim am Rhein in May next year and as usual at our meetings we hear all the latest news from our twin town. Don't forget our German themed Oktoberfest on Friday 14th October at the Swanage Town & Herston Football Club, tickets are £10 in advance or £12 on the door, these are available from Sylvia Bromley 422756. Tickets include a buffet supper and a great evenings entertainment with our host Martin Smith alias "Baron von Schmidt Haus".
SWANAGE DISABLED CLUB Swanage Disabled Club had a very successful summer on the sea-front with their stalls selling lots of knitted items (made by the members and helpers during the year), many new items which were donated plus books and bric-a-brac. We raised a grand total of £1,528.78. A big thank you to everyone who supported us. We are delighted to have been selected by the Mayor, Cllr. Bill Trite to be one of his charities for this year. Could it have been the dinosaurs on board during the Carnival Procession that had something to do with it? It was a wonderful carnival week again and thanks to the Regatta & Carnival committee for all their hard work. We have been selected to receive a donation for the club from the Carnival Committee, thank you very much for including us again. New members always welcome. Jurassic Jaunt: Swanage East Route 1 Area: Distance: Difficulty: Access Restrictions?
Swanage 2½ miles Medium No
A 2½ mile walk with 2 short strenuous sections but this walk is well worth the effort with great views of Swanage and Poole Harbour. How to get there: Grid Reference 022809; On approaching Corfe Castle from Wareham, turn left for Studland just after the National Trust car park. After 3 ½ miles, just before Purbeck Golf Club, take the right turn, signposted Swanage 2 ½ miles. At the next junction, turn right for Swanage and park in the lay-bye with the large stone plinth saying ‘Welcome to Swanage’. Information:- Toilets are not available here. Walk details:On the left, near the start of the lay-bye, take the small swing gate. Fork right here and take the steep 100 metre ascent to the level path. Turn right and continue along the path for 400 metres. Cross the stile taking you into the National trust Ballard Down area and continue ahead, giving you excellent views across Swanage to your right. Avoid any forks to your left and after another 400 metres, ensure you drop down through a small tree arch to meet another path (here you will have a gate to your right to Swanage). Turn left here and ascend towards the Ridgeway of Ballard Down (250 metres). You have seats available at regular intervals for resting and taking in the views across Swanage and the bay.

As the path levels off at the top, turn sharp l e ft and wal k u p to the top of the Ridgeway. At the Ridgeway you will get a panoramic view of Poole Harbour as well as Swanage to your left. You now need to turn left and head along the Ridgeway towards the masts in the distance. Follow the path through the gate and drop down, past the Obelisk and follow the path down to the road. Cross the road carefully and turn left, walking down the grass verge for about 300 metres. For the following 300 metres, you will need to walk on the right-hand side of the road until you meet the road junction on your right. Cross the road into the small open area (signpost here for the Coast path 1 ¾ miles), go over the stile, and after about 20 metres, follow the footpath sign to your right. Continue along the path for 400 metres, through the gate, and about 30 metres after the gate, fork right and follow the path down to the lay-by. The Purbeck Association of The National Trust One of the advantages of belonging to a group like ours is that groups can visit places and see things that individuals can’t. Last month for example I wrote about our forthcoming visit to the RNLI in Poole. As an individual (even as an RNLI member) you simply can’t access all the areas that you see on a guided tour. Next summer we’re planning a visit to Cothay Manor (pictured right), said to be the finest example of a small medieval manor in England, and again somewhere that can really only be seen as part of a group. Even when you visit places that are open to everyone, groups often get special treatment. Many venues will arrange for a guide to come on board your coach when you arrive and give the group a special introductory talk, which prepares you for what you’re going to see and do. To get the advantages of group visits, why not get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us? Purkiss, in a Temper, Burns His Old Axle
S
tanding in a glade in the New Forest is the famous ‘Rufus Stone’ a three-sided memorial about 4 ft high, marking the traditional spot where, on August 2nd 1100, King William II (‘Rufus’) was killed by an arrow. Was it an accident, or was it assassination? No one will ever know. It is one of history’s many unsolved mysteries. Sir Walter Tyrrel, one of the king’s hunting party, immediately fled the scene and spent the rest of his life abroad, fearing for his life as the prime suspect. Today’s ‘Rufus Stone’ is made of cast iron, with an account of the incident marked on each of the three sides. However, it’s a modern replacement of a succession of previous stones which have marked the spot over the centuries. And those memorial stones themselves were replacements of the old oak-tree, the ‘Rufus Oak’ which was reputed to have been on that site when Rufus met his fate.

An old story, told by William of Malmesbsury, tells how Purkiss, an old charcoal burner in the New Forest, discovered the king’s body and transported it on his cart to Winchester cathedral. According to his dramatic account, the arrow was still sticking out of the king’s corpse, which bled all the way to Winchester. There’s a Blue Plaque in Bell Street, Romsey, to record the route old Purkiss took. The monks of Winchester cathedral were horrified to receive Rufus’s body, as the king was notoriously anti-Christian and homosexual into the bargain – something which was certainly not tolerated in those bygone days. They shovelled the body into the ground beneath one of the newlybuilt cathedral towers without any rite or ceremony. Seven years later that tower fell down! Obviously the wickedness of the Red King was to blame for the tower collapsing! Descendants of Purkiss lived in the forest for centuries after this
