Last opportunity to comment on draft Purbeck Local Plan The draft Purbeck Local Plan 2018-2034 will be published between 22 October and 3 December 2018. During this period, people can comment on the Plan and its policies. All comments received will then be passed to an independent planning inspector who will examine the plan before it can be adopted in autumn 2019 and used to determine planning applications. Purbeck District Council has engaged with town and parish councils, individuals and residents’ groups to produce the draft Purbeck Local Plan. It has also been the subject of public consultations in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Many people expressed concern during the 2016 consultation about the number of extra homes, so the Council pledged to fully review the plan and to look at the possibility of restricting the number of second homes and providing more affordable homes. New guidance was received from the Government in autumn 2017 which estimated fewer extra new homes were needed: 1,700 compared with 3,080 extra new homes specified in 2016. Following this, the most recent consultation took place in early 2018 and focused primarily on housing. Over 8,000 residents, businesses and organisations completed a paper questionnaire and telephone survey. Taking into account feedback received during the consultations and technical information and data, the Purbeck Local Plan was drafted and presented to Purbeck District Council on Tuesday 9 October 2018. At the meeting, Councillor Gary Suttle, Leader of Purbeck District Council, commented: “We
said throughout the review process we would listen and we have. The plan before you is a very different to that consulted on in 2016 – half the numbers – in my opinion a huge improvement. “I hope this document will get us to an adopted plan, which is the most important thing for the defence of this district. Without a valid plan, we are open to the threat of speculative developers.” Councillor Suttle continued: “Many people have worked hard on this draft plan, not just Councillors and District Council staff, but local people and groups who have been invaluable in bringing up many points and improvements that we have been able to adopt. “It has been impossible to get the numbers as low as some of you would like, but together we have persevered to draft this plan. “We have listened throughout the process and I reiterate that we are still listening and will make changes if we need to. The people of the district remain our priority.” People should submit their comments online at Purbeck-consult.objective.co.uk/portal/ between 22 October and 3 December 2018. Only comments received during this period can be considered by the inspector. Talking about Wildlife...
There’s something wild about Brownsea Dorset Wildlife Trust is launching a new and exciting project called Wild Brownsea designed to bring people in Dorset closer to nature and needs your help to secure the future of a unique island.
Over the next three years we will look to upgrade the visitor facilities on the island’s nature reserve, while reducing the impact of visitor numbers on the fragile island habitat. By recognising the islands full potential as the perfect place to offer a richer wildlife experience, we will inspire future generations to protect our precious wildlife and wildplaces. But we need to reach our fundraising target by January 2019, for every £1 you donate the wildlife of Brownsea gets £10. For such a small island Brownsea has had an eventful past and now looks to play an equally important role in the future of wildlife conservation in Dorset. It has been gifted by Kings and Queens, set alight and bombed by the Luftwaffe in WWII and even hosted the first Boy Scout camp in 1907. It’s a wonder it’s survived to tell the tale. Luckily for us it has endured and offers Brownsea Island Lagoon

such a biodiverse habitat for wildlife to flourish. Wills, Estate Planning and Lasting Power of Attorneys Do you know when you should update your will and check your Lasting Power of Attorneys are in place? A recent survey has revealed that over half of people have not updated their will or organised their Lasting Power of Attorneys. An online poll indicated that while people had started to recognise the importance of consolidating their final wishes, they were unaware of the need to review them. Whilst writing a will is important, the need to review and update them regularly should not be overlooked, particularly after a significant change in circumstance. The results of the poll suggest that many people are unaware of the need to check their will, not to mention the impact which legislative and familial changes can have on the distribution of their estate. Nigel Skilton of Dorset Wills commented. “Any change in circumstances can have a huge impact on your will. Marriage is the big one. There are a lot of
couples out there that made a will together before they married, perhaps when they bought a house together, or had children, and they don’t realise that getting married automatically invalidates any existing will. “As estates fluctuate in value, people need to make sure their will is consistent with their finances. Spring Flowering Bulbs
Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest. If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs. Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.
Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus). Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread. Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Exclusive 100th Birthday Celebration raises thousands for Dorset Blind Association Dorset Blind Association, a charity helping blind and partially sighted people across Dorset to live happy lives, held their exclusive Centenary Ball took place on Saturday 13th October at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth. The prestigious 100th Anniversary celebration raised a phenomenal £22,705 on the night: an incredible amount and also the most that the charity has ever raised in one event. The event, which was kindly sponsored by long-running supporter Blue Sky Financial Planning, saw over 160 guests put in an appearance to celebrate an impressive 100 years of Dorset Blind Association, with guests arriving in their finest dinner suits and posh frocks to a red carpet welcome complimentary glass of champagne, followed by a three-course dinner with wine and coffee. The Centenary celebrations were thoroughly embraced by the guests, who tried their hands at the Viva Las Vegas Casino, danced the night away to the fantastic sounds of Swing Unlimited Big Band and participated in the accompanying raffle and auction. To get the guests up and moving after dinner, a fun and thoroughly entertaining game of Heads or Tails was played to music. Guests had the opportunity to meet the charity’s patrons, Lord and Lady Julian and Emma Fellowes, and DBA President, James Weld. On display was an exhibition of Dorset Blind Association’s extensive history, featuring a timeline of the most important milestones in the past 100 years of this local charity. Jonathan Holyhead, Chief Executive Officer of Dorset Blind Association, said:
“The evening was a wonderful, happy way to help celebrate our centenary. I am absolutely thrilled by the amount raised and I cannot thank people enough for their generosity. This money will go towards the provision of future services and support for blind and partially sighted people across Dorset, so a great many people will benefit from it and on their behalf I want to say “thank you”, again, to everyone who helped make the Ball such a huge success.” The charity have now held their annual Ball for 4 years, and will be returning with their Masquerade theme next year on Saturday 26th October. Get the date in your diary now so you won’t miss out on this spectacular evening. Dorset Blind Association receive no statutory funding, relying wholly on the kind support and goodwill of the local community to keep their vital services going. As part of their Centenary Celebration, the charity are running their 100 Club campaign; a simple but effective ask for 100 people to donate £100 to celebrate 100 years of the charity. Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. Naturally good... This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese. The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.
MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c
First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized
florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce. To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste. Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

Artsreach reveal an exciting season of music, dance, and theatre to connect rural Dorset with the arts
Passionate about connecting communities across rural Dorset with professional arts experiences, the team at Artsreach are excited to reveal their brand new Autumn Programme. Audiences can expect a high quality depth and breadth of events, with over 70 performances from 28 exciting companies and performers set to take place in village halls, churches, libraries and other community spaces right across Dorset before Christmas. Music lovers can enjoy a real medley of styles and genres from both national and international musicians. Serbia’s leading violinist Branko Ristic returns with his trio Faith i Branko to kick off the autumn season with their original high-energy Roma/Jazz music. Featuring two Canadian Folk Award winners, My Sweet Patootie perform their vintage swing, country blues, folk, and ragtime show. Parisian old-time and blue grass trio Fierce Flowers offer sublime vocal harmonies with violin, banjo, guitar and double bass. Artsreach continue their partnership with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, bringing the Resonate Strings and Symphonic Brass ensembles to rural venues across the County. Inspired by Indian classical music and poetry, vocalist Ranjana Ghatak tours with Mercury nominated bass player Liran Donin and guitarist Jack Ross following the release of her debut album. Award-winning British jazz violinist Chris Garrick and the everpopular Budapest Café Orchestra are back with a new show packed with their distinctive gypsy folk music. Known for their sumptuous four part harmonies, Narthen include piano, accordion, fiddle and soprano sax in a heart-warming Christmas show packed with polyphonic a capella carols. Performing the very best, and
often unfamiliar, sacred, secular and consort music, Cantamus perform a programme for the advent season. The Ridgeway Singers and Band present another traditional Dorset Christmas with West Gallery Carols. Finally, eccentric folk group, The Churchfitters, interlace traditional and original festive songs and Christmas carols in their Christmas Cracker. For theatre-goers, Cornish company ‘Owdyado present a hilariously dark triple bill of riotous comedies inspired by The Twilight Zone in their new show ‘Twisted Tales. Taking inspiration from Shakespeare’s poetry and plays, Pip Utton becomes ‘the Bard’ for an entertaining romp around the life of arguably the greatest playwright of all time. Set in the winter of 1924/25 and based on true events, Poonamallee Productions tells the story Thomas Hardy’s affair of the heart with Gertrude Bugler and the jealousy it inspired in his second wife, Florence in ‘A Pure Woman’. With jarring jokes, pitiful puppetry, and the silliest of scientific songs, Living Spit are back for a raucous romp through the history of scientific stupidity in ‘Giants of Science’. State of Play Arts present a powerful new play, based on letters and other found artefacts, telling the story of two Dorset soldiers who fought in World War 1 in ‘The Gathering’. With live music, waltzing and unexpected connections, Pentabus dance across a century in ‘Crossings’. Actor Neil Gore of Townsend Productions presents an Edwardian Magic Show based on Robert Tressell’s classic novel ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’. Finally Near ta Theatre are back with ‘Christmas. Time’, a fun, festive and fantastically funny musical prison comedy! In an honest and humorous solo show, ‘Confessions of a Cockney Temple Dancer’, award-winning artist Shane Shambhu combines Indian dance and laugh-out-loud comedy to lead audiences on a journey of his life growing up in London; from unlikely dance student to international performer. Swedish company The Big Bang Gang use stories, songs and cabaret to explore how one fatal gunshot in Sarajevo started ‘The Great War’ in ‘Sarajevo Big Bang’. Thrilling, funny, powerful and poetic, Adverse Camber vividly evoke an ancient Celtic legend in ‘Dreaming the Night Field’, featuring one of Wales’ most engaging storytellers alongside exquisitely haunting live music. Two of Britain’s leading storytellers, Hugh Lupton and Nick Hennessey, sing and tell the true, harsher histories of English dissenters, tricksters and radicals in ‘The Liberty Tree – Robin Hood & other English Radicals’.
There’s plenty for families to see too, with four brilliant productions touring Dorset during the half term break and in the lead up to Christmas. Tall Tree Theatre lend their unique style of puppetry, live music and storytelling to ‘Lily & the Albatross’, a heartfelt tale about achieving the unachievable and never letting go of your childhood dreams. Featuring puppets, shadow play and projections, Clydebuilt Theatre’s ‘Dinosaur Detectives’ is packed with all the fascination, fun and conflict that surrounds the search for dinosaurs. Using traditional and contemporary puppet craft, Norwich Puppet Theatre offer a fresh, poignant twist to the much loved Brothers Grimm fairly tale, ‘The Frog & The Princess’. Finally The Last Baguette use visual storytelling, live music and puppetry to shine a light on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale ‘The Little Match Girl’. The Artsreach autumn season is once again supported by local solicitors Blanchards Bailey, as well as the Arts Council, Dorset County Council, and North, West East and Purbeck District Councils. Wines: Choice Desserts Dessert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are ‘late harvested’, incorporate ‘noble rot’ (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can be sparkling and fortified, also. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular, for many dining occasions. Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the Limarí Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine. Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite from the 17th
century, the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and, of course, volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.
Torres Floralis (Spain) is a further popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making FloralisMoscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations.
