Volunteers honoured at annual ceremony Dedicated volunteers from across the District of Purbeck have received thanks and recognition for their work at a ceremony in Wareham hosted by District Council Chairman, Bill Trite. The volunteers from Purbeck’s towns and villages had their many and varied contributions to the wellbeing of their communities described and wholeheartedly appreciated at this tenth annual ceremony. Councillor Trite and guests heard of the energy, enthusiasm and commitment displayed by volunteers in their work for the benefit of others. After presenting each volunteer with a scroll to mark his or her achievement, Councillor Trite told them: “It’s a privilege to be able to thank you for what you do and, through you, to thank all those other local volunteers not here tonight for their time and work freely given. “It is said that the ultimate test of character is how you treat those who can never be of any possible use to you. Well, very many volunteers pass that test with flying colours.
“Reductions in local authority funding means that progressively greater reliance will have to be placed on volunteers in the future - so let us never forget or overlook them.” Thirteen parishes and towns across the District nominated Volunteers of the Year, all of whom were congratulated in front of more than 50 guests. Talking about Wildlife...
Helping the birds Many of us will have wanted to help our familiar garden birds by putting up nest boxes for them to use in the spring. We rightly love the sight of the blue tits and robins taking advantage of our help.
But beyond our gardens, out on our beautiful heaths, there are other birds which cannot be helped by putting up nest boxes. This is because their specialist lifestyle involves nesting on the ground amongst the heather and bracken. So, these birds need our help and thoughtfulness in another way. They very much need us to think constantly about not disturbing them as they keep vigil on their eggs or chicks when we go out on the heath. We, or our dogs, only have to stray a very short distance from a path for a rare woodlark or nightjar to be scared off its vulnerable nest - quite possibly causing the bird to fail to breed successfully. A failed year is very significant to such rare birds
which can only breed on this rare habitat which we are so lucky to have around us. This is why it is so important that we stick to the paths and keep our dogs on a lead from March, when the nesting season begins, right through the summer, when it ends. None of us would deliberately destroy the nest of a robin or blue tit, but it is terribly easy to unwittingly destroy the nest of a woodlark or nightjar just by leaving the paths or not keeping our dogs on a lead in the spring and summer. If we follow the ‘heathland code’ in this and other ways, we can both protect the special wildlife of the heath and enjoy its beauty to the full. New state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre for Meridien Modena Family-owned motoring business, Meridien Modena, has invested ÂŁ3.5 million in a new 14,000 sq ft, two floor, state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre, based near its showroom in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Located on the Hounsdown Business Park, the Ferrari service centre provides an additional servicing facility enabling the Meridien Modena team to complete restorations, pioneering technical refurbishments, as well as routine scheduled servicing on Ferrari vehicles. Creating seven new jobs including two full-time apprentice technicians from September, Meridien Modena will have
in excess of 40 staff running the centre to ensure exceptional service is delivered to its nationwide customer base. With 13 service bays, scheduled service times will be dramatically reduced from a peak of six weeks to between three and five days. Two service bays will be dedicated to working on classic Ferrari’s which are more than 20 years old as Meridien Modena has officially been recognised by the Italian brand as one of only nine authorised Classiche workshops in the UK. The centre also includes a lounge for clients to relax and view the workshop through floor to ceiling glass. The centre has the capability to accommodate a total of 80 vehicles onsite, including a storage area to house 35 cars on the first floor. It has an array of the latest technology including lever-less tyre fitting equipment, integrated work tool stations delivering technicians with retractable oil, water, compressed air and power on demand to aid workshop efficiency. A large parts carousel system which will enable 3,000 parts to be stored, as well as high voltage special tooling to work on hybrid vehicles.

15 Chris Ambrose, who is heading up the Ferrari service centre team as service manager, said: “The opening of this additional facility is an exciting development for Meridien Modena. This revolutionary facility has the newest technology available for customers, so they can rest assured that their car will be in good hands if it requires any work to be carried out or routine maintenance. “A key focal point in the centre of the workshop is a first-floor vehicle lift. The first-floor has 14 storage lifts which allows 35 vehicles to be stored to allow the workshop below to remain free flowing for daily work.” Meridien Modena received the Ferrari Global Aftersales Dealer of the Year Award at the annual Ferrari Dealer Conference, held earlier this year at the Fiorano Circuit in Italy. The judges explained that the Lyndhurst-based dealership had won the award in recognition of ‘hitting and exceeding various targets and for customer satisfaction throughout the year across the service and parts departments.’ Glenn Butt, director at Meridien Modena, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our new service centre to benefit our ever-growing client base. The significant investment in the new centre and its facilities ensures that we meet the exemplary standards expected from the Ferrari brand.

REACH OUT … in Purbeck It’s a shocking statistic that one million older people go for a month without speaking to anyone, and half of all older people consider the television as their main form of company. Age UK Dorchester offers a FREE ‘Reach Out’ service, which provides volunteers for older people who have become lonely and isolated, and which can occur for a variety of reasons such as bereavement, ill health, or loss of confidence. Volunteers play a key role in helping to re-establish social contacts, either by accompanying them to a local activity, or visiting them for a cup of tea and a chat. They can help people to find out about activities, groups and clubs in their area and to go along with them until they feel confident enough to do things by themselves. The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van Birthdays! They are a great excuse to let your hair down, have a family gettogether or just simply spoil yourself in luxury for the day. Nellie, being somewhat advanced in years, has had many opportunities to try different ways to celebrate. This was my sister’s Birthday, May 10th. What I had never realised is that my own Birthday, being 22nd December, was always celebrated with family meals and parties to compensate the fact that it was so near Christmas. It was never to be forgotten. Sue’s Birthday however, in the wonderful month of May, had never been celebrated in the same way, except a party she had organised herself for her 40th. So, we were going to change this. Nellie was determined we would get together and do something for Sue we knew she would like. Of course, it had to be a surprise. Gary, Sue’s husband, told Nellie she wanted to go to Swanage on a boat. What a great idea! Mum and Dad (more correctly Dad) had been fishing at Docklow up North, had then travelled

Family birthday trip out on the Solent Scene to friends in Wales, and then made the journey all the way to the South for us all to be together. Dad is 83 and loves adventures… he gets on well with Nellie! Job done. We were all in the same town, so step one complete. It was a blustery day in Poole. Even the waves by the Quay were dancing around in excitement with little ‘white horses’ appearing and disappearing quickly. Nellie was nervous. If it was like that here in the shelter of the Quay, what would it be like out at sea? Mum, Dad, myself and Stephen were all positioned for the grand arrival of the Birthday Girl. Just in the distance we saw Gary and Sue arriving, little people slowly walking towards us. Once they were nearer I could see Sue’s grin. It was nearly as big as Nellie’s but not so silvery. She was happy. Gary however looked a little trepidacious. He was not sure if the boat would be sailing. Oh No! After all that planning would we be foiled by our everchanging English weather? Please no. Off Gary went to the kiosk while we all

23 waited with baited breath. He returned looking somewhat reassured, but not totally content. The boat would sail, but not all the way to Swanage, it would take us on a two-hour tour to Old Harry Rocks and back. We decided to go with it as we were all there and we love the water. Nellie was so glad we did. It was a bit rough, but that’s what we liked. Dad was now grinning from ear to ear and reminiscing about his days on the trawlers that his skipper father used to sail. Mum sat inside with a coffee, also smiling as we were enjoying ourselves so much. Sue did her Titanic impersonation at the very front of the boat and I nearly got soaked with a wave that splashed enthusiastically onto the deck. Soon after this the captain decided to turn around. Health and safety I am sure. Certainly, bouncing up and down on choppy waters is not everybody’s cup of tea, or should I say legs of sea? It was a great trip, well enjoyed. So now what better than to have a late breakfast in one the ‘Mediterranean style’ cafes overlooking the fantastic boats and yachts moored in Poole Harbour? It had to be done. After a delicious brekkie, we walked to the new Poole Pottery shop and had a potter round (forgive the pun…). Mum bought a couple of pressies and I bought some sweets. We had decided to drive to Norden and catch the train to Swanage, so the original plan would be fulfilled. Off we set. There is something magical and enticing about trains which is why I think they attract so much attention from photographers and train spotters. There are many along this train line. Going back in time on an old diesel
Coffee and cake... with a view we arrived in Swanage, having passed the wonderful Corfe Castle enroute. It was now time for coffee and cake of course (I really do not understand why I am putting weight on?) so we sat in a little café right on the front watching the dancing waters of Swanage Bay. Idyllic. It so happens that Sue’s present from the family this year was an amazing 19th Century Victorian locket that she had always wanted. Brian at Georgian Gems in Swanage had got it especially for me. Sue loves it. When I said she could put a photo in it she immediately said she would find one of her rabbit! Gary and I were not amused, although he did say he knows his place. Travelling back we got front seats on the Pullman! Wonderful large windows with fantastic views of the rolling countryside, the stone houses and of course the castle again. We were also presented with a short history of the carriage by the smartly dressed ticket collector. What more could you ask? The whole day was a huge success. So maybe now we can make May 10th a never to be missed excuse to go out and enjoy ourselves? Happy Birthday Sue. Where will Nellie take us next…? By Debbie Corney

Tastes so good... BBQ Grilled Aubergine Burger
A yummy vegetarian BBQ burger, perfect served with a side salad and a tzatziki dressing.
Ingredients for 4 servings Burgers 2 aubergines Lettuce leaves Sliced tomato 1 red onion 4 burger buns Cooking Oil Curry Marinade 75ml vegetable oil 1-2 tsp curry powder Juice of ½ a lime 2 cloves of garlic Salt & pepper
KITCHEN 1. Wash all the vegetables. Cut the aubergines into slices 1cm thick. Peel and slice the onion. 2. To make the curry marinade, mix the oil, lime juice and curry powder together into a paste, peel and crush the garlic and add to the mixture. 3. Brush the sliced aubergine with curry marinade and season both sides. BBQ: 1. Prepare to the BBQ to approx. 220c. 2.Cook the sliced aubergine for approx. 4 minutes on each side. 3.Split the buns and drizzle some oil on the inside and toast gently. 4.Serve the aubergine inside the warm toasted buns with lettuce, onion rings and tomato, with a dressing of your choice.

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation.

Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed.
Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.

We caught up with some of the team as they were getting ready for their school holiday ‘day camp’ children to arrive and had a chat to Tom, one of the centre’s lead instructors. We asked him how the day camps work? “It’s simple really, children are booked into the camps; online, by phone,
or by calling into the office. They can be dropped off at the centre Monday to Friday on school holidays to take part in a full day of activities. We don’t fix the program that way we can take advantage of the weather and tide. This means that we can have mega days with the groups doing things like archery, orienteering, low-ropes, highropes, climbing, canoeing, big-canoeing, hiking, team-games, the list goes on…….
