Dear Swanage! With the better weather we have had recently I am certainly hopeful that this summer we are encouraged to get out and enjoy our local countryside and places of interest, rather than looking to get on a plane to get away from it all! One of our recent acquisitions has been a converted campervan, which not only enables the transportation of the magazines each month, but also gives us an excuse to get out and explore the local area. We will be making a regular feature out of this and hope to share some of our adventures with you to give an idea of places that you might like to try yourselves. See our latest exploits on page 28. From Ward to Board Paula Shobbrook is Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals and will carry out this role in the new merged organisation, if approved. Here Paula talks about how essential ward to Board reporting is to ensure quality of care for patients. “My job is focused on providing the highest quality of patient care,” explains Paula. “Quite simply, we are judged by what happens at the bedside.” And for Paula this means regularly getting back into her uniform and going out onto the wards. As Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Paula sits on the hospital’s Board and having firsthand knowledge is crucial: “If we’re going to sit in a board meeting, making major decisions about patient care or what is happening in the hospital, this ‘ward to board’ connection is vitally important.” Her interest in patient care started when she volunteered for the Red Cross as a youngster, and a colleague at the charity suggested she took up nursing as a career. Since then, she has built up a wealth of knowledge from working in various positions in the NHS. Paula has an important role in leading the new organisation and retaining that connection with nurses at ward level. “I’m at the centre of making decisions about issues that matter, but
it also allows me to keep in touch with life on the wards. This connection will be vital if the merger b e t we e n t h e two foundation trusts is approved. Continuing to provide quality Paula Shobbrook services locally is the driver behind merger. While the two organisations already provide excellent services, we want to retain that and together we can be even better.” Patient feedback is important in helping any hospital provide high quality of care. “We carefully review feedback and if there are areas we need to improve we make sure we put it right. The merger is about ensuring we can continue to provide quality of care but also to improve and meet new standards. “We need to be able to adapt and change so that we can provide the best care and services possible, and the proposed merger is another step towards meeting the challenges of the modern world. “We already wor k very closely across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch hospitals with many services complementing each other. We will still have the same three hospitals, but the merger will allow us to address some of the challenges currently facing the NHS. “For me, the most exciting part will be the chance to share and develop best practices from both trusts to continue to improve our services.”

Swanage solicitor raises nearly £5,000 in first-ever marathon SWANAGE solicitor Craig Wells is the toast of his firm after raising nearly £5,000 for charity by successfully completing his firstever London Marathon. The father of two had aimed to raise at least £1,750 for his chosen charity Children with Cancer UK but, in the event, has brought in more than double that amount. So far he has received £4,060 in donations, which with Gift Aid equals about £4,800 and money is still coming in. Craig, a Partner with Ellis Jones Solicitors, said: “The crowds giving encouragement all the way were amazing and the whole run was like one big street party.” He added: “My mum was on the Embankment at about the 24 mile mark and my wife, Julie, and sons Thomas and Samuel were tracking my progress on the Virgin London Marathon website. “I was tired and emotional but very pleased to have finished.” Craig, who completed the marathon with a time of four hours 56 minutes and 21 seconds said he had now entered the public ballot for next year’s event. He is also planning to take part in September’s off-road Purbeck Marathon.

Jurassic Jaunt: Purbeck Plod Swanage to Kimmeridge Area: Swanage/Kimmeridge Distance: 25 miles Difficulty: Difficult Access Restrictions? No
A strenuous circular route from the sea front in Swanage - great views along the coast going west and panoramic views of the valley down to Swanage and across to Poole Harbour on the way back to Swanage. How to get there: - Grid Reference 034773 Durlston Country Park or Swanage Sea Front. Proceed to Swanage via Wareham and follow the signs to the sea front. Depending on the time of the year, you can park along the front or you will need to park in one of the car parks nearby. An alternative is to start from Durlston Country Park which is signposted from the sea front and is an excellent centre to explore a lot of fascinating information about the Jurassic Coast. It also has an information centre and café. Information:- Toilets are available at both start points. Walk details:- From the sea front, head west along the coast path, up to Durlston Country Park and follow the path along to Kimmeridge (12 miles). At Kimmeridge (toilets available), as you come into the grassy car park area, head diagonally across to the tarmac road. Follow the road for a short distance until you are at the end of the row of cottages. Turn right here and follow the path up across the field and up the short steep slope to the ridgeway (2/3 mile). Turn left at the top and proceed to the next stile (1/4 mile). Turn sharp right and head down the slight incline, through the small woods which will take you through Steeple Leaze farm and up to the road (2/3 mile).

Go straight ahead and up the road for 1/4 mile until you meet a track to your right. Follow this track up to the ridgeway (300 metres). At the top you need to turn to your right and follow the signposted track past Grange Arch (a folly which overlooks Creech Grange) and on to Corfe Castle (3 1/4 miles). This section onwards provides great views to both sides of the ridgeway. Follow the path along the ridgeway and you need to take one of the two opportunities to bear right and drop down to the lower path which takes you to the base of the Castle. Here, walk along the path to the left of the stream or along the road to come out on the main road opposite the National Trust car park. Turn right and proceed along the road for ¼ mile until the road turns sharp right up into the village. Take the lane to the left of this bend and follow the road for ¼ mile until it starts to bear to the right and you will see a gate and track to the left signposted Rollington Hill. Follow this path up onto Rollington Hill and on to Nine Barrow Down and then drop down to meet the Swanage – Studland road (2 ¼ miles). At the stile by the road, turn left and walk on the left verge of the road for ¼ mile, then cross over and take the path up to the obelisk and onto Ballard Down. After about 3/4 mile, take any of the paths that drop off Ballard Down to the right and follow the path into Swanage. Jurassic Jaunts

Trust pocket money to bring out bright ideas Bright ideas on ways to improve understanding of the Jurassic Coast in local schools are being rewarded with grants from the Big Jurassic Classroom Pocket Money Fund. Whether it is taking the class to the coast or bringing the coast to the classroom, the funds, distributed by the Jurassic Coast Trust, will be used to help turn the best ideas into reality. Schools across Devon and Dorset were each invited to suggest how they could use the Jurassic Coast as a learning resource, communicate its values and help children get closer to it, especially those whose backgrounds might preclude such an experience. The eleven successful schools will each receive a cheque for £250 ‘Pocket Money’ to help fund projects and trips to the World Heritage site in Dorset and East Devon. ‘The ideas have been rolling in… some have been pupil led, others the inspiration of teachers or school councils’ explained Anjana Ford, Jurassic Coast Education Coordinator. Among the ideas to win the approval of the Trust are a Jurassic Coast Rockery with outdoor dinosaur dig, proposed by Chickerell Primary Academy; a Jurassic embellished climbing wall for Parley First School and for the pupils of Sticklands Primary School, Evershot, a whole school outing and whole school project based on the Jurassic Coast. ‘Children are the future custodians of the Jurassic Coast, they have a natural curiosity for fossils and dinosaurs’ added James Weld, Chairman of the

Jurassic Coast Trust. ‘The best Pocket Money inspired examples of how to nurture this interest will be shared among other schools’. The Big Jurassic Classroom is an ongoing project, run by the World Heritage Team to help local teachers integrate the Jurassic Coast into the curriculum. So far it has supplied materials, training and advice on Jurassic Coast field trips to nearly 1000 teachers and teaching assistants. a water butt or large containers, that’s all to the good but don’t be afraid to use washing-up water (we haven’t all got dish washers) and bathwater if it’s not too contaminated by bubble bath and suchlike. Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.
The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation. Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed. Concentrate on salad crops to keep lettuce and radish etc. crisp and don’t worry so much about crops and plants with deeper roots. If you can catch rainwater in
Swanage Trefoil Guild In total The Trefoild Guild currently has over 20,000 members comprising both women & men who have been or are still connected with Guiding or Scouting, the aim being to help keep alive the spirit of Guiding / Scouting in our community, giving practical, financial and moral support. The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van We recently invested in a dual purpose camper van. One that can not only carry all the thousands of magazines we produce each month, to our very own valuable 70 or so distributors, but one that also has a fridge, cooker, cupboards and (a very modest…) ‘upstairs bedroom’ for Hayden, as well as a ‘cozy’ bed for Stephen and I. Nellie, the black camper van, has quite an imposing character with long black skirts, silver wing mirrors and large silver grills at the front. If you ever see her when you are out and about, please give her a wave as she is rather fond of that! She got her name from the combined words, Nissan and Elgrand which is her make. You can see her in true style below! We have designed these articles as a little fun to show you where Nellie gets to and maybe give you some ideas of where to go… in the Dorset area. For those of you well travelled and seasoned camper van drivers, you will already have experienced the joy of getting outdoors and away from it all. For us this is new and I have to say I love it. The Thimble Inn, Piddlehinton Show we bought a years membership to Brit Stops, which is ideal if you are only wanting to stay somewhere for the night or you are on your way to somewhere much further away like Scotland or Northern Wales, or even aborad, and want to stop off on route. Once you have your membership, which is a small £25 for the year, it is FREE to stay at the designated areas. You just need to call and make sure there is a space for you that night. These are usually pubs, farms and local, off the track places that don’t always have a lot of facilities and are certainly not the usual camp sites or tourist hot spots. Quiet, off the road and a good meal can easily be enjoyed without the worry of not having a drink due to driving back home again. Our first Brit Stop day and night was spent in the village of Piddlehinton at The Thimble Inn. It is a thatched roof picture postcard pub situated in a beautiful village in typical South Dorset rolling countryside. The food was really good and all three of us
29 feasted ourselves well! There is even a well INSIDE the pub. A gorgeous little babbling brook surrounds the pub and in summer it would be ideal to sit outside. A pub that Stephen and I would happily recommend. We have a games cupboard in Nellie, one at the ready for any time we want to stop and have a ‘friendly’ competition as a family. We get quite competitive at times and both Hayden and Stephen are not very good losers. Maybe it is a man thing! It is a great way to get Hayden off his computer games and interact with us. It can take quite some doing as many parents of young boys and girls may know. This seems to work for us…at the moment. The now old fashioned, real cards come out, we have bingo and dice games and all are really enjoyed in a relaxed, away from the phones, off the beaten track atmosphere. As I said - I love it! We settled down for the night with Hayden in his ‘upstairs bedroom’. Once we pulled our bed out we realised we couldn’t open the fridge to get the milk out! We are still learning as you can see… Then Hayden got too cold and by 3am he was ‘downstairs’ with us, lying on the front seat which conveniently turns into the van when we are stationary. A cozy, warmer night was had by all!

The next day we woke up to birds singing and the sun just about shining, well behind some greyish looking clouds anyway. We used the facilities in the pub and then set off for Cerne Abbas. I have lived in Dorset for over 16 years and have never visited Cerne before! Shocking but true. It is surprising what we have on our doorstep that we just don’t make the effort to go out and see. We took a wrong turning at one point and finished up on a dirt track to a local farm. Oh Oh Nellie was not at all impressed with that! But that is the fun of having a lazy day out and discovering the English countryside. The giant was there in all his glory as you can see here… We did have an article on this giant in a previous issue, so I hope you were able to read it? We then went down into the local village of Cerne Abbas and had a lovely English coffee shop lunch at Abbots. We were able to amble on home in a very happy Nellie. Hayden got back onto his computer games and we got back to work, all the happier for having spent some time together as a family and seeing some of beautiful Dorset. Where will Nellie go next?
