Rare monkeys arrive at Monkey World after rescue from Lebanon A new species was welcomed to Monkey World – Ape Rescue Centre with the arrival of Benny & Nia, a pair of white-throated guenons. White-throated guenons are incredibly rare, native only to small regions of the rainforests in Benin and West Nigeria and do not exist anywhere outside of their native countries, other than Monkey World. The wild population has decreased by 50% over the last 30 years, due to hunting & deforestation and are listed as a species vulnerable to extinction. Dr Alison Cronin, director of Monkey World, travelled to Beirut to work with Animals Lebanon and the Lebanese authorities who confiscated the monkeys that had been smuggled into Lebanon via a passenger flight from Accra, Ghana into Beirut. Lebanese authorities have been cracking down on the illegal wildlife trade and joined CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) in 2013. Despite Lebanon being a relatively new member state, it has already gone some way to protect endangered species smuggled into the country, with animal protection legislation drafted and police enforcing the treaty. Benny & Nia were seized at Beirut airport and handed over to Animals Lebanon to care for until arrangements could be made to move them to Monkey World for specialist care and rehabilitation. The black market trade in primates is a global problem that threatens many different species of monkey and ape. It is a brutal trade where adult animals are shot, and eaten as bushmeat, while youngsters are taken out of the tropical forests they come from often to be smuggled overseas for the illegal pet trade or entertainment industry. It is a bloody and cruel trade that is driving many endangered species to the brink of extinction. Dr Cronin said, “I am pleased that Monkey
World was able to assist the Lebanese government and Animals Lebanon to rescue and rehabilitate these incredibly rare monkeys. Monkey World exists to assist governments around the globe to stop the smuggling of primates from the wild. Lebanese authorities are putting a lot of effort into protecting endangered species, and organisations such as Monkey World and Animals Lebanon are here to support their efforts by caring for the refugees of the black market trade. As tragic as their story is, Benny & Nia are the lucky ones that have survived and made it to a safe home. Most die during the hunt or when they are torn away from their families and forest homes to be smuggled across the globe. We cannot give them their natural lives back again, but I am pleased to see that they are enjoying their new home and enclosure and their sad story will hopefully remind people about how important it is to protect endangered species and the habitats which they come from.� The guenons were flown back to Monkey World in Dorset, courtesy of Middle Eastern Airlines, under the care of Dr Cronin, and have been released into a new enclosure. The pair are young and following their harrowing ordeal need to gain weight and get physically fit again but all signs are good that Benny & Nia the white-throated guenons will make a full recovery.

Volunteers honoured at annual ceremony Dedicated volunteers from across the District of Purbeck have received thanks and recognition for their work at a ceremony in Wareham hosted by District Council Chairman, Bill Trite. The volunteers from Purbeck’s towns and villages had their many and varied contributions to the wellbeing of their communities described and wholeheartedly appreciated at this tenth annual ceremony. Councillor Trite and guests heard of the energy, enthusiasm and commitment displayed by volunteers in their work for the benefit of others. After presenting each volunteer with a scroll to mark his or her achievement, Councillor Trite told them: “It’s a privilege to be able to thank you for what you do and, through you, to thank all those other local volunteers not here tonight for their time and work freely given. “It is said that the ultimate test of character is how you treat those who can never be of any possible use to you. Well, very many volunteers pass that test with flying colours.
“Reductions in local authority funding means that progressively greater reliance will have to be placed on volunteers in the future - so let us never forget or overlook them.” Thirteen parishes and towns across the District nominated Volunteers of the Year, all of whom were congratulated in front of more than 50 guests. Summer wildlife At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start… At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. Over at Chesil, the little tern project is in full swing, with the first egg appearing on 20th May, nestled in the iconic pebbles of Chesil Beach. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars! New state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre for Meridien Modena Family-owned motoring business, Meridien Modena, has invested ÂŁ3.5 million in a new 14,000 sq ft, two floor, state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre, based near its showroom in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Located on the Hounsdown Business Park, the Ferrari service centre provides an additional servicing facility enabling the Meridien Modena team to complete restorations, pioneering technical refurbishments, as well as routine scheduled servicing on Ferrari vehicles. Creating seven new jobs including two full-time apprentice technicians from September, Meridien Modena will have
in excess of 40 staff running the centre to ensure exceptional service is delivered to its nationwide customer base. With 13 service bays, scheduled service times will be dramatically reduced from a peak of six weeks to between three and five days. Two service bays will be dedicated to working on classic Ferrari’s which are more than 20 years old as Meridien Modena has officially been recognised by the Italian brand as one of only nine authorised Classiche workshops in the UK. The centre also includes a lounge for clients to relax and view the workshop through floor to ceiling glass. The centre has the capability to accommodate a total of 80 vehicles onsite, including a storage area to house 35 cars on the first floor. It has an array of the latest technology including lever-less tyre fitting equipment, integrated work tool stations delivering technicians with retractable oil, water, compressed air and power on demand to aid workshop efficiency. A large parts carousel system which will enable 3,000 parts to be stored, as well as high voltage special tooling to work on hybrid vehicles.

This revolutionary facility has the newest technology available for customers, so they can rest assured that their car will be in good hands if it requires any work to be carried out or routine maintenance. “A key focal point in the centre of the workshop is a first-floor vehicle lift. The first-floor has 14 storage lifts which allows 35 vehicles to be stored to allow the workshop below to remain free flowing for daily work.” Meridien Modena received the Ferrari Global Aftersales Dealer of the Year Award at the annual Ferrari Dealer Conference, held earlier this year at the Fiorano Circuit in Italy. The judges explained that the Lyndhurst-based dealership had won the award in recognition of ‘hitting and exceeding various targets and for customer satisfaction throughout the year across the service and parts departments.’ Glenn Butt, director at Meridien Modena, said: “We’re delighted to be launching our new service centre to benefit our ever-growing client base. The significant investment in the new centre and its facilities ensures that we meet the exemplary standards expected from the Ferrari brand.

New cashless parking payment provider launches in Purbeck Drivers using their mobile phone to pay to park in car parks in Wareham, Swanage and Corfe Castle will need to register with a new service from the end of May 2018. JustPark will be running the service in Council-owned car parks from Tuesday 29 May 2018. The service had previously been provided by Phone and Pay so users of that service will need to register their details with JustPark at www. justpark.com Car park users will still be able to use cash if they prefer, but anyone wishing to pay via mobile will have the convenience of being cash-free, and extending their parking time without going back to their vehicle. Councillor Cherry Brooks, Economy and Infrastructure Portfolio Holder for Purbeck District Council, said: “This is about giving people a range of options, and using their mobile phone to pay for parking means they don’t need to worry about finding the right change for the car park machine. “As the parking time can be extended by using the mobile app or by text message, shoppers and visitors don’t need to race back to the car before their ticket runs out, giving them more time to enjoy the local shops and attractions in Corfe, Swanage and Wareham,” Anthony Eskinazi, founder and CEO

The Adventures of Nellie The Purbeck Publications Camper Van The isle of Anglesey off the north coast of Wales. Many a good holiday was spent there as a child, so you can only imagine Nellie’s excitement when Stephen’s sister and Dad booked a week there for all of us last month. Driving towards our destination, Nellie was full of nostalgia and fond memories of times gone by. Betws-y-Coed where we met friends years and years ago, Swallow Falls, the low hanging clouds over the mountains, Llyn (Lake) Ogwen and finally we arrived at the shallow tidal waters of the famous Menai Straits which separates Anglesey from the mainland. Nellie danced across the Bridge and there we were on the island. Alan, Stephen’s father is a member of the prestigious “Holiday Property Bond” and we were booked into wonderful cottages overlooking the rolling green golf course at Henllys near Beaumaris, with magnificent views of Snowdonia in the background. Idyllic. Henllys used to be a Franciscan Friary and there is a quiet spot with statues, trees and greenery in commemoration of this. Nellie enjoys the secluded coves cottages and apartments for those who are investors within the scheme. Nellie was thrilled. Being on a golf course was a great excuse for Stephen to bring out those dusty clubs! It is a while since he has played (must be all that responsibility and hard work he is having to do), so Nellie persuaded him to have a go. Off he went, in a buggy of course, with his uncle David. The were both in complete contentment as they swung those clubs and drove off to find those balls. Uncle David, who does play much more often, shot a birdie (We did explain to Nellie that no birds were hurt in this action…) on hole number 15 and Stephen, well he did not lose ALL of his balls (now now Nellie) and was in fact very happy with his game. Both came back with big smiles and Uncle David unfortunately, also with sore knees. Nellie totally understands! Penmon Point was a favourite of ours in the past. Dad fishing off the rocks, while Mum worried about Sue and I falling on the rocks with waves crashing around us as we ran across to see if Dad had caught anything. The coastline seemed very different this time but maybe it was

23 my imagination? After all, dare I say it is nearly 40 years since we were regularly there! Oh my word how time flies. Puffin Island just off the shore “in those days” was literally that, full of puffins! Now there are around 200 pairs apparently, which is better as they had dwindled down to much less. The good news is that they are on there way up again. Knowing this, we decided to take a boat out to see for ourselves. There are many boats that go out from Beaumaris. We chose a Rib Ride with Seacoast Safaris! Nellie likes excitement and she chose well as Hayden loved it! The young man piloting was very proficient and literally took us for a spin. As a member of RNLI he was well trained and we felt totally safe as he spun the boat in circles before speeding up and chasing the ebbing tide out to Puffin Island. What a thrill! We saw grey seals bobbing up and down, guillemots, kittiwakes, cormorants, razorbills, eider ducks and ONE puffin! The skipper steered us carefully into the cave, smiling while telling us it was a good idea to put our hoods up! Those birds have no manners… It was a great trip and thoroughly recommended if you are ever on Anglesey. Beaches are another must on the island. As a child ‘Me and Dad’ picked winkles
off the rocks at Trearddur Bay and cooked them to eat many a good night. Trearddur Bay had been hit by a bad storm ten years ago and now has a smart new walkway right across the sands. Again, a sign of changing times. Alan and Rachel, Stephen’s dad and sister, love walking and were out each morning by 8am to take in the sites with plenty to see over the 276 square miles that the island occupies. Nellie let us rest, though I think she would have liked to skip along the cliff tops. We did take a walk along the coastal path from Lligwy Beach to Moelfre on a wonderfully sunny day. The ice-cream and coffee were a welcome find at Moelfre before setting off back again to Lligwy beach for a picnic lunch and an afternoon snooze. Nellie likes those! Nellie really enjoyed her stay at Henllys with its full-sized snooker table, huge outdoor chess set, bar billiards, air hockey, table tennis, sauna, steam bath and swimming pool. We certainly were not short of entertainment! The drive home was interesting as you will hear about soon… Anglesey is a wonderful island and if you have never visited there are scores of things to do. Enjoy! By Debbie Corney

BARBECUED LAMB RECIPE
As summer approaches, you may find yourself wishing to utilise the outdoor barbecue. This recipe offers you the option to either use this for a BBQ or to cook inside and serve with your choice of vegetables.
Ingredients 1 lemon (juice and zest) 2tbsp soft light brown sugar 125ml olive oil 8tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves (crushed) 4tbsp mint (chopped) 400g half boneless leg of lamb
Equipment: Barbecue or griddle pan Method: To make the marinade mix together the lemon juice and zest with the sugar, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and add seasoning. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and then mix in the mint and garlic. Lay the meat in a deep tray. Pour in half the marinade over the top of the meat and turn it over to coat it on both sides. Put the rest of the marinade to one side to use as dressing later. Then, cover with cling film and choose to leave it for 1 hour or alternatively overnight in the fridge. After, remove the lamb from the fridge, shake off any excess marinade back into the tray before inserting a skewer that goes from one corner to the opposite. Do this again with another skewer but in the opposite direction. You can either cook the lamb on a barbecue or a griddle pan and cook on a medium heat. Cook for between 15-20 minutes. Make sure to turn the lamb frequently until pink or cook for longer depending on your preference. Once you have finished, let the lamb rest for 10 minutes and remove the skewers. Serve with your choice of vegetables and pour over the rest of the marinade.

a beginner’s
GUIDE Runner Beans
It’s not too late to plant runner beans. My Grandfather always put them in on Whit Sunday, never before, probably because the plants don’t like frost. For the cost of a packet of seeds you’ll get a continuous crop of lovely fresh runners for a month or so, and they freeze really well. Push a bean into a small pot of multi purpose compost and keep it moist. Within a couple of weeks they should start to grow and when you have some sturdy plants with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves they can be planted out in the garden or in deep troughs. If you have a vegetable patch or enough room, construct a wigwam of tall canes (about 6-8 feet) or a
row of crossed canes or even netting for them to grow up. They could even be added to flower beds to give a bit of height as long as they have something to climb up. Next to each cane, dig a hole with a trowel—add some garden compost if you have some or even a layer of newspaper (to hold the moisture) and carefully transplant the bean plants without disturbing the roots too much. Water well and keep them moist in dry spells, especially when the flower buds appear and the pods are beginning to set. Happy harvesting - and don’t forget to leave some pods on the plants to dry out and provide you with a fresh new batch of seeds for next year!
