Hello Residents of Swanage! Well we have had a real treat with all the Olympics recently. The Opening Ceremony was a real triumph of our British history. Quite a spectacular performance. Well done to all those fantastic volunteers! In the Games themselves I have loved watching the gymnastics which I have to say is my favourite. I remember seeing these as a teenager and being in complete awe. I have to say, I still feel the same! The swimming, diving and watersports too, they are all great to watch. At the time of this writing we still have a week to go so fingers crossed we get some Gold medals!! Swanage Museum
Swanage Museum & Heritage Centre The Museum was founded in 1976 by a group of enthusiastic local artists and historians. We moved from our first home at the old Tithe Barn in the winter of 2005/06 to our current location on the seafront, in partnership with the existing Heritage Centre run by Purbeck District Council. From the 2011 season the District Council asked us if we could run the Centre entirely with our Museum volunteers, including staffing the shop counter. Our dedicated volunteers met this challenge and opened the Centre daily throughout the season without missing a single session. This year has continued that success and we are always keen to welcome new volunteers. If you are interested, please call in or phone us on 01929 421427. The Museum tells the story of Swanage from Dinosaurs and the Jurassic Coast to Seaside Resort and the Second World War. Discover the stone trade and see the wartime ARP Headquarters. Period shop displays including Hardy’s builders workshop and Lloyds Dispensing Chemists. An important part of our work is helping to answer local and family history enquiries, and we also have a separate Local Studies Centre at

Swanage Sea Rowing Club Swanage Sea Rowing Club has been offering rowing as a leisure and sport activity for 10 years, and our blue Cornish Pilot Gigs are a familiar sight in the bay at all times of the year. As a charity, our aim is to promote both fitness and social activities for all ages in the community. The Club has three traditional wooden gigs – Old Harry, Peveril and Winspit and one GRP gig (Dancing Ledge) for all weather training. All Pilot Gigs are built to the same specifications for six oars and a cox, and are 32 feet long and taken from the dimensions of ‘Treffry’ built in 1838 and still rowed in Newquay, so rowing a gig is taking part in a real maritime tradition. Gigs can be rowed in regattas across the southwest (there are now 5 clubs in Dorset and many more in Devon and Cornwall) for those who want to achieve a high level of physical fitness, or you can take a more relaxed row in the local waters and see our fabulous coastline as it should be seen – from the sea. Members can also take part in many other exciting events including rowing the river Thames and visiting other clubs –four gigs took part in the Royal Jubilee Pageant celebrations in June. Rowing is one of the easiest activities to join, as you don’t need any special equipment, and our members range from teenagers to those in their 70s and come in all shapes and sizes!

The Club is busy fundraising to develop a new Boathouse as our temporary site will soon be closed and we need to expand our facilities to match the growing demand to row by our members. We offer ‘social rowing’ sessions on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings at the Stone Quay when all are welcome to try a row whether they have any experience or not. Young Jurassic Coast Ambassadors greet Olympic Torch at Durdle Door Ten young ambassadors for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site joined Olympic torch bearer Lisa Devine at Durdle Door on the Lulworth Estate, on Friday 13th July for a very special photoshoot. The children from Lulworth and Winfrith First School in Dorset were very excited and felt extremely special to be chosen for such an opportunity. Aged between seven and nine, they greeted Lisa waving their hand made Olympic and Jurassic Coast banners and flags. Molly said ‘I felt really excited that we were going to see Lisa with the torch, and I felt a bit nervous because lots and lots of people were staring at us...it was a great experience.’ Kian said ‘I felt like I was having a once in a lifetime experience… I really enjoyed it.’ Izzy said ‘The best part was standing right next to the torch, it was very tall, glimmering and shiny, it was a beautiful sight...and I'm very glad I got to see it.’ Ella said ‘I was really glad when I read the letter to say I had been chosen, I was grateful to the school that I was there to see the torch because this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I don't think it will ever happen again in my life, so I will remember it forever.’ Their teachers had selected them because they showed a particular interest in the Big Jurassic Classroom project which the school has been involved in over the last year. Lulworth and Winfrith First School is one of 100 schools across Dorset and East Devon to be part of the project, with over 1000 teachers being trained by the

Jurassic Coast Team on how to link the seven Olympic and Paralympic values to the values of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site Team. Alexandria Potter, Education Coordinator for the Jurassic Coast Team, helped coordinate the event and said ‘It’s not every day the Olympic torch is on the Jurassic Coast and what a fantastic finale to the Big Jurassic Classroom project! It really brought the link between the Olympics and the World Heritage Site to life. This has been a once in a lifetime experience for those ten children who represent the 4000 children who have helped make the Big Jurassic Classroom project so successful.’

What to do in your Garden in August Well, so far it’s been a bit of a disappointing Summer, with really sunny days being few and far between. I think it’s safe to say that living in the U.K. one has to learn to grab good garden days when they come along. Some things you can do in your garden this month include: • Keep an eye open for any Enjoy the beauty of sunflowers in summer areas of bare soil in your garden and mulch them to aid in water retention and the suppression of weeds. Care must be taken though not to cover up seedlings or to allow a build up of mulch against the stems of plants, specially if you are using grass cuttings. • If you have herbs in your garden then now is a good time to start picking some to dry for the winter months ahead. • You can start looking at and buying Spring bulbs now and make plans for where you want to put them. • Go around your garden and harvest any seed heads that are ready. It is best to collect them in brown paper bags or envelopes and label them straight away so you don’t forget what they are. • Check roses for any leaves that have Blackspot or Rust, pick these off and dispose of them in the bin not the compost heap. • If Narcissi bulbs are on your bulb shopping list you might want to consider planting at least some as soon as they arrive. If you do this you will have flowers by Christmas to brighten your garden. • Check for and remove any suckers (a secondary shoot growing from the root or base) from roses, shrubs or trees.

• It goes with out saying that any hanging baskets that are not in a
position to benefit from rainfall need to be checked and watered regularly. An idea I’ve had is to take photos of your garden – and this would be a project for throughout the year – to plot and plan, not only what flowers and plants work well in different areas but also what could use being moved or replaced. If there is a spot that lacks colour or structure it would be more obvious when the photographs are put together with a plan of your garden. If you have drafting or drawing skills perhaps a large piece of paper (butcher’s paper is good as it comes in a roll and can be torn to size) can be used to draw a basic plan of your garden and the photos attached. Do you have a water butt in your garden? It used to be a fairly standard fixture in gardens when I was a child, but I’m not sure they are making the come back that they should. If you don’t have one yet why not look around for one of the right size and price range for your needs. Chances are good that as soon as you’ve got it rigged up it will stop raining.
