St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council Firstly I hope that you are all staying safe and well in these extraordinary times. I am sure we will all be very pleased to see some sort of normality return to our lives. Several Parish Councillors are in “that” age group or have other reasons why they have to stay home so are fully aware of the difficulties you are facing at home and in dealing with life generally. We are as has been said many times over the last few weeks “in this together”. Despite the lockdown the Parish Council is trying to ensure business as usual and the Clerk has continued to work fully through the lockdown period. Although the Parish Office is closed to the public and will remain so until further notice, you can contact us by email and telephone on clerk@ stleonardspc.org.uk and 01425 482727. In need the Clerk can arrange a one to one Zoom meeting with a resident if preferred. Meetings are still continuing but remotely. If you want access to either a planning meeting or the full Council meeting all you need to do is email the Clerk by 9am on the day before the meeting, the Zoom invitation will then be emailed to you. There is also a dial in option so you can ring in to the meeting if you wish. The new Corona Act which was brought in in April gave Parishes the power to meet virtually until May 2021 so it is likely that meetings will continue to be held in this format until then. Our new website has launched which is fully accessible www.stleonardspc.org.uk. The Council is working towards improving direct communication with residents and we would encourage you to regularly view the site for updates and public information. During the lockdown we had VE day on the 8th May 2020 the Parish Council laid a wreath on your behalf at the Memorial Garden. We have welcomed a replacement Parish Clerk, Mr Jonathan Ross who commenced his duties on 1st July 2020. Mr Jonathan Ross is a resident
of the Parish and brings with him a wealth of knowledge of local government and experience as he previously worked as a senior officer at East Dorset District Council, and more recently at Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council. We have retained the services of the previous Clerk, Mrs Jacobs who moves to an assistant role supporting the Clerk. Previously, I reported the long service award given to Councillor Mrs Ann Warman for 40 years service to the Community, unfortunately Mrs Warman has subsequently resigned for personal reasons. We wish her well in her hard earned retirement from the Parish Council. The vacancy was advertised and as no bye election was called the Council co-opted a replacement Mrs Beverley Waugh onto the Council at their July meeting. COVID is obviously going to be with us for some time and has resulted in us all getting used to a very different way of life. One good thing has been that more people are out and about walking, it is one of the few pleasures we can continue to enjoy. However, it has also highlighted to numerous people the issues with overhanging vegetation. Please check your boundary with the pavement and cut back any overhanging vegetation, far more people are out walking and we need the full width of the pavement clear to keep a social distance. Talking about Wildlife...
The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. Heritage: Lots of Invasions Writing this article late March, as we experience restrictions to limit the effects of an “invasive” disease and applaud our NHS staff, let us not forget the threat of invasion about now in 1940, the sufferings and deaths throughout the world in the ensuing five years, and successful conclusions, on 8th May 1945 of the European war, and on 15th August 1945 in the Far East. Ceremonials to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day are already postponed. Our nation’s history is peppered with actual or threatened invasions: the Romans; 1066 and all that; the Spanish Armada; the Scots on several occasions; plus the French under Napoleon; not forgetting a number of plagues over the centuries. Claims to the English throne from overseas ended with the “invasion” in 1688 by protestant Prince William of Orange and his wife Mary of the Netherlands, nephew and daughter of James II. Nothing specifically connects our parish with
events of the earlier Monmouth Rebellion, when James, Duke of Monmouth, Charles II’s eldest illegitimate son, born at Rotterdam in 1649, exiled in France, laid claim to catholic James’s throne. Landing at Lyme Regis, he championed the Protestant cause, to be joined by descendants of those who fought for the Commonwealth to fight for religious freedom. His “invasion” ended in defeat for his force of 6,000 odd men at Sedgemoor by the King’s troops on 5th/6th July 1685. He fled the field, dismissing fifty horsemen with him, and headed, it is suggested, for Lymington. An odd local link emerges through an overnight visit by the Duke to Edward Strode at Downside near Shepton Mallet, a lapse for which he was pardoned. When sold in the 1950s, a request to name the St.Ives House farmery “Strode Gardens” was made by T.H. Russell. 19thC. papers providing the Russell family link to the area were amongst those recently donated by his Trustees. Several companions of the Duke were captured en route, the Duke himself being found on 7th July, wearing smelly garments exchanged with a passing shepherd, crouching in a ditch beneath an ash tree. Rupert Keppel’s 1960s account describes the Horton Road site as “between Three Legged Cross and Horton, immediately before this bridge, a winding, shady lane … off to the village of Woodlands … is Lousy Lane, so named after the curse upon Amy Farrant who betrayed the fugitive”. Keppel’s lengthy trek across fields and heath ends at an ash tree with a metal plate attached. He says it once caught fire and half the trunk fell in 1955, so

15 can it still be there? Monmouth’s uprising had disastrous results, not just for himself, but many of his supporters, whether actually guilty or relatively innocent. He was brought to Ringwood, questioned at the old vicarage, and kept under close arrest in a house on West Street (in those days Bridge Street) belonging to Kings College, Cambridge. Here he wrote “craven” letters to several people, including one to the King on 8th July, imploring them to save his life. On 11th July he rode under escort to the Tower. With no trial deemed necessary and internal politics implied, all was to no avail. His botched execution at Tower Hill by Jack Ketch saw that name given to Punch and Judy’s hangman. He is buried among the mangled remains of others in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula within the Tower. He died with the name of his mistress, Lady Henrietta Wentworth, on his lips. “A few months later, … finding her world empty, she joined him”. Among those who were to suffer the revenge of the establishment was Dame Alice Lisle of Moyles Court, who had the misfortune that her husband had been a signatory on Charles I’s execution certificate. In exile, he was assassinated in Switzerland on Charles
II’s orders. As first among the victims of the “Bloody Assizes”, accused of harbouring Monmouth supporters, at Winchester Lord Chief Justice Jefferies allegedly sent the jury back three times to obtain the desired “guilty” verdict. Women guilty of high treason were burned at the stake, but hers was commuted to beheading. A scaffold was erected in the old Market Place, and, on 2nd September 1685, she was the last woman to so die. Her “body” was returned to her family to be buried in Ellingham churchyard. Tales persist on whether her head is also there, as well as stories of her ghost. By Act of Parliament in May 1689 her conviction was declared null and void. “Hanging Judge” Jeffries, having executed 331 of Monmouth’s followers, transported 849 to the American plantations and punished 31 others, was rewarded with the Lord Chancellorship. However, public support for King James earlier attempts to create tolerance between Protestants and Catholics had been lost. Jeffries was caught at Wapping, dressed as a sailor in 1688, attempting to flee like his master. He was taken to the Tower, where, a “hard drinker”, he died of gallstones on 19th April 1689. He joined Monmouth by being buried in the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, but was exhumed secretly in 1693 and re-interred in the family vault at Aldermanbury. That church was destroyed in WW2 air-raids. Poetic “justice”. Rick Stein’s charity lunch raises £3,100 for local hospice Forest Holme Hospice celebrated receiving a donation of £3,100 from Rick Stein’s restaurant in Sandbanks, which they raised through a special charity initiative earlier this year before lockdown. The popular seafood restaurant organised a special three course charity lunch during January with a percentage of each meal going to the Poole-based charity. The money will help fund the provision of end of life care and support to more than 1,000 people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. Due to the effects of the
Covid-19 pandemic, the charity is expected to have an estimated deficit of over £350,000 this financial year. Paul Tucker, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Forest Holme said, “We were so pleased to have been chosen by the restaurant and absolutely thrilled with the amount raised. Rick Stein’s have previously supported us with a Coffee Morning and we want to thank all their amazing staff and customers for their support and generosity. This money will make a big difference to local people who need our care and support at the most difficult time of their lives.”

Understanding Investments:
Can you afford to retire or start a new business? I appreciate the headline is somewhat contradictory - retiring or starting a new business are disparate choices. However, from past experience recessions can create a time to reflect on your working life and can also force decisions to be made through redundancy or the failure of an employer. Retirement or starting a business are both daunting, emotionally and financially. If you are able to answer the financial question (ie affordability), then this can help ease the emotional journey. But how can you do this in a fact based, reliable way? Lifetime Financial Plan This is a detailed, yet simple to understand, analysis of your current and future predicted expenditure versus your income and capital. It can include both your regular expenditure alongside lump sum outlays and identifies the percentage return required on your savings, pensions and investments to ensure your money will last your lifetime. The output is a cash-flow projection which acts as a visual road map illustrating your future capital position. It can include different scenarios; for example, retiring now or at a specified time in the future, working part-time rather than full-time, downsizing your residential home etc. It also includes an assumption for inflation, which is critical as this is often forgotten but can be so damaging for retirees.
How else can this help? A plan such as this not Howard Goodship only illustrates affordability of your aspirations, but it also then informs the level of risk required to achieve your objectives. Our aim is to always take the least amount of risk necessary to achieve the desired outcome (less risk leads to more certainty and visa-versa). I have found that many people have hopes and aspirations but are held back from putting them in place because they are worried about their affordability (no-one wants to run out of money). By analysing the facts, people can act with more confidence and having carefully considered the likely outcomes. The Dorset Publications Camper Van For anyone new to these pages, Daichi, The Dashing Dude is our beloved Campervan. He is fun loving and adventurous and passionate about steering us to new places, to take us out as a family, exploring the coast and the countryside. He loves England and drove all the way from Japan to be with us, where he had a new suit fitted including fridge, cupboards, table, bed and a great new roof that lifts perfectly, giving us plenty of headroom inside. This month he was shaking with excitement. Daichi had heard of the ‘Mummy’s Curse’, so when Stephen’s sister suggested we meet at Beacon Hill and celebrate Grandpa’s Birthday with a walk and a picnic, Daichi (and us)
The grave of the 5th Earl of Carnavon
Socially distanced group selfie... complete with lockdown hair! was raring to go. Beacon Hill, near the village of Burghclere and overlooking the glorious Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey, houses the grave of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who died in 1923. Highclere Castle has belonged to this family since 1679. The 5th Earl, an enthusiastic Egyptologist, is famous for his sponsorship which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. Howard Carter exposed the tomb which had lain silent for nearly 3000 years and was adorned with rich Egyptian artifacts. Carnarvon must have been delighted after years of donating, but the story goes that on arriving in Cairo he was fatally bitten by a mosquito, which became infected following a razer cut. Carnarvon died of blood poisoning. Thus started the famous and chilling tale of “The Mummy’s Curse” which has enraptured many a movie since. What do you think? To be fair Howard Carter lived until 1939 and died at the age of 64, but we rather like a good, scary tale. Daichi whole heartedly believes it. He loves those movies too!

29 Beacon Hill itself is pretty steep. Daichi took one look and gracefully declined, deciding he was better suited to the car park. I was pleased that during the Lockdown we had done many a walk around the forest, which meant I was much fitter than usual. Stephen’s sister and father are very keen walkers and Hayden and Stephen are far fitter than me. It is quite a hill. As the weather was dry it meant the ground was good for walking, but I would not recommend this on a wet day. The views are stunning. Glorious rolling hills, trees, blue sky and white / grey folded clouds. You can’t beat an English panoramic landscape. It inspires the soul. We did stop a couple of times to catch our breath. Looking at the views was indeed a good excuse! We must have passed Beacon Hill on the A34 hundreds of times and had never thought to stop and look, let alone climb to the top. The hill is 261 metres high. My fit bit watch told me that I had climbed the equivalent of 37 flights of stairs. Not bad for my day’s exercise. The hill is actually the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort, allegedly built in 1000 BC, housing 2000-3000 people. It is good to stand and imagine what it would have been like all

Going down was far easier... those years ago and what families would have been doing and creating then. How times have changed. Now with all our gadgets, cars, machines… and then with sickles, pruning hooks, ploughs and iron axes. It was a pretty violent time too, so maybe there are benefits to our more modern age. All food for thought. Talking of which, the picnic at the foot of the hill on the two conveniently placed picnic tables, provided wellearned refreshments. Rachel had baked some delicious sausage rolls as well as cupcakes, so we were very well catered for. A harmonious rendition (that maybe a bit generous) of “Happy Birthday” to Grandpa signalled the close of a wonderful walk. Daichi had kept the food perfectly cool in his little fridge… he also looked rather cool and contented with himself as we drove away all smiles. I wonder if there were any ‘Mummies’ lurking in the trees, watching us? Before driving all the way home, we did stop off at Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey. It was open! That is a trip for another day. Daichi loves Downton, so there is a good chance he will take us. Will that be next month, or somewhere else? You will see… By Debbie Corney

Technology has always been an important tool for schoolchildren and students, but it’s even more important now: during lockdown it became clear that children and teenagers with access to appropriate technology were better placed for remote learning than those without. Lockdown may be over, but if infection rates rise again then we could go back to ‘blended learning’ where some or all of the school week has to take place at home – and older children are expected to use technology for homework even when things are normal. And of course, technology isn’t just for studying. It’s also for having fun: video chatting with friends, playing games, bingeing on TV box sets and taking advantage of apps. And that means buying tech can be a challenge: what should you buy if you want something that’s useful for school or college work as well as leisure time? We think these products should be in your tech shopping list. Apple’s iPad has no real rivals, so if a tablet is your preferred option that’s the one to go for: even the cheapest one is incredibly powerful and flexible; however, it’s also eminently breakable, so consider a protective case and gadget insurance too. Apple may seem like the go-to choice for laptops too, but its Mac laptops are much more expensive than equally powerful Windows PCs. There are lots of really great Windows laptops for very good prices, and Microsoft’s Surface range is stylish as well as powerful. We’ve also given some thought to getting online when there isn’t good broadband available, and to something that’s as important as any PC’s processor or tablet’s tech: the backpack it’s going to be carried around in.

On Your Plot Herb Gardens
Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course!

• If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. • Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. • Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. • Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. • Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes. Most activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen makes it easy to pop out for a few fresh leaves when you are cooking, and many of us have a patio which can easily become home to a variety of container grown herbs. Herbs can make an
attractive, fragrant and tasty addition to your borders, or you may prefer to opt for a permanent herb bed. If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. Most types of herb can be raised from seed, but for a quicker start browse the farmers market, garden centre, or even car boot sales for plants that are ready to go. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

Ferndown PROBUS Club Ferndown, West Moors, Ashley Heath, St. Ives, St. Leonards, West Parley and District PROBUS is a club for retired men. The Ferndown branch meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Dudsbury Golf Club, Ferndown, commencing at 12 noon. Meetings comprise a threecourse luncheon followed by a talk, on a diverse range of subjects, given by invited Speakers. We also hold a coffee morning at the same venue on the second Wednesday of each month for members and their partners. Tastes so good... Chewy Breakfast Bar
A delicious, chewy bar that’s packed full of dried fruits and nuts that’s perfect to be served as breakfast, or a lunchbox treat
Ingredients for 8 servings 1 cup almond butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup almond milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2.5 cups rolled oats 1 cup rice cereal 1/2 cup chopped almonds 1/2 cup sultanas 1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate plus 1/4 cup melted to finish

Preheat the oven to 325f/160c
2.
Line a square baking tin (8x8in) with baking parchment. Spray a little coconut oil in first to help secure the paper.
3.
Mix the wet ingredients into a large bowl making sure the almond butter is fully combined.
4.
Add the dry ingredients and stir well.
5.
Spoon the mixture into your tin and press down well with your spatula.
6.
Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
7.
Remove from the oven and cool for 15 minutes then drizzle with dark chocolate.
8.
Pop in the fridge to ensure the chocolate is solid.
9.
You can store each slice in the freezer once wrapped in foil for up to three months or 1 week in the fridge.
