The 2018 Bournemouth & Poole Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Motorcyclists unite globally as The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride shines the spotlight on men’s health in over 650 cities across 95 countries on Sunday September 30th. With close to 1 million men losing their lives annually from suicide and prostate cancer, the annual event is calling on the community to stop men dying too young. Over 120,000 men and women will dress in their finest attire and ride their vintage and classic styled motorcycles worldwide, to raise funds and awareness to prostate cancer and mental health on behalf of official charity partner, The Movember Foundation. Founded in 2012 by Mark Hawwa, Sydney Australia, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has raised over $13M USD for men’s health, with a goal of adding a further $6M USD to the cause throughout the 2018 fundraising campaign. Last year the our ride raised over £23,000 and this year we aim to raise over £30,000.
Bournemouth and Poole’s Distinguished Gentlefolk will once again be taking part with over 500 riders donning their cravats, tweaking their moustaches, pressing their tweeds and polishing their classic and vintage motorcycles to ride for men’s health. Understanding Hearing Loss The ear is made up of three parts. The outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sound is received by the outer ear and is channelled through the ear canal to the ear drum and the middle ear. The sound causes the ear drum to vibrate and results in the tiny bones in the middle ear tapping against each other, this vibration is transferred to the 30,000 tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Brave soles wanted for charity fire and ice walk Anyone brave enough to take on the challenge of walking barefoot across smouldering hot coals and razor-sharp glass is invited to sign up to Forest Holme Hospice’s charity Fire & Ice Walk at Cobham Sports and Social Club in Wimborne on Thursday 11th October to raise money for local people affected by a life-limiting illness. The Fire& Ice Walk is a great challenge for individuals wanting to test out their bravery and push themselves to achieve something they never thought possible, as well as a unique team building opportunity for local businesses and organisations. Participants will leave having achieved a huge personal accomplishment and can rest assured that each step they take on the fire and ice walk and every penny they raise, will go directly towards care and support for patients and their families during the most difficult time of their lives. ...And just who is John Hawkins? Since John began providing these Heritage Articles about the Parish in January 2017, visitors to the Meeting House and those he meets elsewhere nowadays often ask if he is the author. A full set of those articles, plus a few future drafts, is available in the Memories section File M97.
Born in August 1930 in Wood Green, North London, John left Trinity Grammar School before “matriculating� to join the Royal Navy as a Boy Seaman in October 1946. He specialised as a radar plot rating, qualified as instructor in 1958, was commissioned in 1960 as a Boatswain (PR), and took retirement as Lieutenant (SD) in 1970. Given his experience as a seaman officer and member of the Navigation branch, he secured the post of sales manager with a company building wooden hulled motor yachts, smallest 56ft, at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, all built to Lloyds 100A1. This 88 footer was just one of two within the eighteen built over the next four years that John oversaw, trialed, demonstrated, and on occasions delivered. In 1974 an experimental 67ft high speed glass fibre hull was fitted out and demonstrated. It apparently later
became a military trials vessel. Orders for the original designs disappeared, so John moved on to manage a marina at Gillingham in Kent, close to his old naval base. In 1976 the position of sales manager for Greenham Marine, the company that had provided electronic equipment for all the Fleur de Lys yachts, became vacant. Based on Poole Quay, that brought John to St. Leonards. Already supplying the RNLI, with his naval experience in those fields, the group began work with two major builders of small military craft. The late 1970s were a bad period for the yachting industry, the company was taken over and John made redundant late 1979. John took on the job of administrator for an innovative taximeter with a nearby electronics company, to promote it within an industry dominated by two major suppliers of

the original mechanically driven 1900s “clocks”. By 1989, and two increasingly complex re-designs, Sheriff taximeters had soon appointed over 60 UK based dealers and achieved export deals, notably in Malta and Cyprus. John regularly assisted local authorities, including majors in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, in setting and implementing the new style clock/calendar-controlled tariffs. The company was taken over in 1989, but John worked from home for another manufacturer 1990-1997, drafted an English version of new EC rules, which became the basis of the British Standard. Finally retiring at 67, while completing the landscaping of his half acre garden, he was still called upon for advice and assistance within the cab trade. From April 2000 the garden generated over £1,500 for the “Yellow Book” scheme by opening every bank holiday weekend until August 2004. Detailed listings of the plants, his books and models, plus management of a couple of elderly neighbours’ personal affairs kept his computer skills occupied. A local Parish Plan project in 2005/6 initiated John’s researches into its longterm history, for which in 2008 he received a Certificate of Appreciation from East
Dorset District Council. His research was initially limited to Ringwood and Ferndown libraries and the Meeting House. There he met several local historians, joined their Workshop, and began weekly visits to HRO Winchester with the late Ted Baker. In August 2007 he created his first of now some 30 major exhibitions, “Of Maps and Memories”, at the Meeting House. His personal archive contains some 150 files, plus maps, documents, and a library of around 1000 books. Little direct use is made of internet material, other than as leads to genuine documentation. In addition to creating since 2012 the over 300 file Meeting House archive, John gives talks on various topics to groups and organisations, and assists individuals in their researches into families, properties or other interests. The equivalent to all donations and fees he receives for such work is donated to the Meeting House Association, a registered charity, which thus qualify for the addition of 25% Gift Aid. His £5,000 total so far roughly equals the material costs of providing the entire archive. An article on the history of the 1727 building and its readily accessible hard-copy files appears next month. At 88, John still has no plans to retire, so the rest is... just more history!

Talking about Wildlife...
The dragon of the skies… No summer is complete without experiencing the sights and sounds of a dragonfly as it hunts over a nearby pond. Agile and colourful, dragonflies are a joy to watch with their aerial manoeuvres rivalling the fastest military aircraft as they duck and turn in pursuit of prey, or narrowly avoid the clutches of hungry hobbies. These adaptable insects lord over wetlands, moorland and even woodland glades, feeding on flies, midges and even each other. If you thought butterflies were the only insects worth a second glance, these multi-coloured, iridescent predators demand appreciation too. In addition to occasional visitors from continental Europe, there are 17 species of damselfly and 23 species of dragonfly resident in the UK. They are found in almost every habitat, bringing a splash of colour to the landscape just as the wildflowers and butterflies are winding down – so now is the perfect time to spot them! This year in Dorset we’ve been lucky enough to witness the arrival of the Southern Migrant Hawker dragonfly, which is usually found in warmer climes. Spotted in Lytchett Heath in east Dorset, this is a first recording for the county, most likely due to the prolonged period of warm weather this summer. than the more common migrant hawker, and is often called the blue-eye hawker, on account of its blue eyes. The migrant hawker dragonfly is one of the most exciting dragonflies to spot, and you can often find them hunting along sheltered hedgerows in August and September. Another impressive dragonfly you may see this year is the emperor dragonfly, which is a characteristic dragonfly of new ponds, where for the first few years, their larvae may be extremely common. The males are pale blue, with an applegreen throat and a black stripe running the length of the body. Dragonflies are most active in warm and sunny conditions and are most commonly found near water, but several species also travel to feed in gardens, fields and woodland edges. Tastes so good... TOMATO SOUP
As the weather turns slightly colder as we venture into Autumn, there is nothing more perfect than a warming tomato soup. You can add croutons to give it an extra crunch or you can even top it off with basil leaves if you want to dress it up.
Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp. butter 2 garlic cloves 3 x 400g cans plum tomatoes 500ml vegetable stock 5 soft sun dried tomatoes in oil 1tsp. sugar 125g pot fresh basil pesto 142ml pot soured cream
Equipment: Large pan Method: In a large plan, heat 1 tbsp. of butter (or oil if you prefer) and then crush the garlic cloves and add to the pan. Do this on a low heat for roughly 3 minutes until the garlic has softened. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and the canned tomatoes. Once you have done this, add the sugar, stock and seasoning. Turn up the heat and bring the soup mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down then take off the heat. With a stick blender, whizz the whole mixture together. Add half the sour cream and continue to use to stick blender. Make sure to taste as you go to adjust the seasoning or alternatively add more sugar if you prefer. When it is all blended, serve the soup into bowls. You can either add more sour cream into the bowl or add some pesto on top.

GUIDE Container Shrubs
Late summer to autumn is the main period for planting shrubs in containers, although container grown shrubs can be put into ornamental pots at almost any time.
based compost as shrubs are likely to stay in their containers for a few years and any grown in peat based compost will need frequent feeding and will dry out more quickly than loam based ones.
Choose a container that is the right size for the shrub. If the container has been previously used, scrub its inside surfaces thoroughly.
However, you should use ericaceous compost for lime haters such as rhododendrons, pieris, camellia, conifers and heathers.
Put heavy containers into position before planting up, or risk a slipped disc! Stand the container on blocks or bricks to allow free drainage. Put broken crocks over the drainage holes and if you have something like coarse gravel put a 1 inch layer to help with drainage. Place some compost next and then arrange the plant centrally. Pack more compost round the edges making sure there are no air pockets and allow at least 10 cms below the rim to allow for watering and mulching. A loam based compost, such as ‘nutrient rich’ is better than a peat

Wines: A Good Choice - Rosé Rosé wines are very popular for drinking in the summer months. Now, with several styles being available, made utilising a wide variety of grapes, they can be enjoyed throughout the full year. Popularity speaks for itself, as many countries, worldwide, now produce these wines, which incorporate some of their colour from the grape skins. Adding colour to a dining table and al fresco, for example, as well as making fabulous apéritifs, these wines are a great choice. Indeed, sophistication comes to mind, when the pink wines are around.
La Vieille Ferme Rosé (France) is a very popular (dry) wine. I find this has pleasant, light-red fruits for the bouquet and most pleasing mouthfeel, which continues on, to the palate sensation. Pairs well with grilled meats, salads and a lot of cuisine. Coeur de Cardeline (France) is a further, often-selected, production. This Côtes de Provence pale-pink pleaser exudes a bouquet of summer fruits, which enticingly leads to the mouth’s pleasures. The excellent flavours continue to the palate, for a most satisfying finish. Grilled meats, fish, pasta and salads, match very well with this wine. Arniston Bay Rosé (South Africa) is a Fairtrade production which graces many dining tables. The name is a reference to the blue skies, wonderful beaches and the fishing village. Again, the bouquet pleases, very well and the mouthfeel follows, with red berry flavours, plus a positive, memorable finish. Great to accompany numerous dishes of cuisine. These are just a selection. Each to their own and we all have our preferences – whether red, white, sparkling or other. Take pleasure in finding your favourites. I located these wines at Co-op stores. Having been a customer of the Co-op for many years, I have noticed an increase in the variety of household goods and foods, as time progresses. KINGSTON FESTIVAL WEEK 16th – 23rd September - Music, Flowers, Crafts This year St James’ Church in the village of Kingston is holding several events during the third week of September, aiming to bring church and community together. The week will start on Sunday 16th September with a Quarter Peal of the 10 bells, coordinated by Mike Pitman, our Tower Captain, who will be joined by Bell ringers from across the area. They will be starting at about 1.30. There will then be a Music Afternoon from 2.30pm til 4.30pm in the Church, where people can come and listen to Organ Music played by Roderick Raley while enjoying a relaxing cup of tea and afternoon refreshments. There will also be an exhibition of photographs by Terry Hardy who lives in the village. Hopefully we can also offer visits to the tower if weather permits during the afternoon. On Tuesday 18th September at 2.30pm we have Peter and Hazel Hartle of Purbeck Ice Cream speaking about their first 30 years of Purbeck Ice Cream. They have been building up their business from their Kingston-based farm at Lower Scoles and will give a talk about how the well-known brand first began and developed over the years. Please do reserve a seat for this event as we need an idea how many are coming (judyforgan@hotmail.co.uk). On Wednesday 19th September at 2.00pm Harmony Rocks, a local choir of ladies, will bring a repertoire of popular classics, under the direction of Annie Campbell. Tea and cakes will be served during the interval. Tickets are not essential but you may like to reserve a seat. On Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September our third Flowers, Crafts
and Music Festival will take place with arrangements around the theme ‘Water of Life’. The Church will be open for viewing and refreshments from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday. People from across the new Benefice of St Aldhelm have been involved in putting this together, with supporters helping from Kimmeridge, Corfe Castle and Church Knowle, as well as Langton and Worth Matravers. We are very grateful to all who are contributing towards what will be a very special week. The Festival Week will close with an informal Songs of Praise Service ‘Hymns with Pimms’ from about 3.15pm. Please come and support some or all of the events, which help to bring the wider community and church together. There is no charge for admission but hopefully people will give a generous donation towards the Church Funds.
