St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council After 15 years of service to the Parish Council the current Parish Clerk has decided to plan her retirement for the middle of next year, we will therefore be advertising for a replacement shortly. The closing date for applications will be the 7th November 2019. Local Heritage: Lords of the Manor First, apologies for a couple of errors that appeared in last month’s “Farming Yesterday”. The “Westover Farm” on page two should have been “Woolsbridge Farm”, while my photograph of Folly Farm did not appear. Turning now to this month’s proposed subject, the Earls of Malmesbury, they had several farms within their once extensive estate here, which they acquired while resident at their then family seat Hurn (Heron) Court, from 1795 onwards. The original Malmesbury title was a Jacobite Peerage title created in December 1716 as one of four given to a Philip Wharton, 1st Duke of Wharton, all of which became extinct when he died on 1st June 1731. As a “reward” to diplomat James Harris, he had been created 1st Baron Malmesbury in 1778. Under the Peerage of Great Britain, in 1800 he was given the title of 1st Earl of Malmesbury. He was also awarded the title Viscount FitzHarris for use by an heir. Son of grammarian and politician James Harris, he had served as Ambassador to Spain, Prussia, Russia and France, whilst also representing Christchurch in the House of Commons. During the 18th century the Harris family lived at Malmesbury House in the Close at
Salisbury Cathedral, seen here in a 2012 picture by JH. In 1795 the last Cooper male heir had died and Baron James Harris inherited Hurn Court through the female line. As Viscount FitzHarris, his eldest son proceeded to improve and extend the property, originally a farmhouse associated with the Priors of Christchurch Priory, and then acquiring considerable land areas in vicinity. At the first Earl’s death in 1820, he was buried in the family tomb within the North transept of Salisbury Cathedral. He is here seen reclining on his personal memorial there (top right), while another large panel nearby provides details of the long line of the Harris family. He was succeeded by his eldest son, James Edward, the second Earl, (1778-1841) who sat in Parliament for Helston, Horsham, Heytesbury and Wilton. The third Earl, James Howard Harris (18071889) was a prominent Conservative politician. He served in 1852 and from 1858 to 1859 as Foreign Secretary, and as

15 Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords. Under his tenure, the 1450 acres of the Avon Cottage estate was placed on the market in 1858, and Avon Castle was later built on the cottage site. He died childless, and was succeeded by his nephew as fourth Earl Edward James Harris (18421899), son of Admiral the Honorable Sir Edward Harris, second son of the second Earl. No details are currently available of his local activities, but Hurn Court, seen below in a 19th century lithograph, continued as the family seat. Further local property disposals took place late 1890s, notably the St. Leonards Estate that included plots both large and small north of the A31, and south of the “Roman Road line” between St. Ives End Lane and Cedar Avenue. In the 1960s building began on its “Racecourse Heath” end. His eldest son, William James Harris (1907-2000), sixth Earl served as a Government whip in the House of Lords from 1922-1924, and was later Chairman of Hampshire County Council. During his tenure, we have seen considerable development of the old Malmesbury land within St. Leonards, Avon Castle, Matchams, Barnfield and on the Grange estate, not without some controversial decisions. Once again, as the eldest son, William James Harris (born 1946) became the sixth
Earl, was Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire from 1973 to 1982, but by then the family seat had moved to Greywell Hill House, near Farnham, Hampshire. His son and heir, the Honorable James Hugh Carleton Harris, the present Viscount FitzHarris, was born in 1970. Carleton is a retention of his mother’s family surname, the Baronetcy of Dorchester. They have a son, the Honorable James Michael Oswald Harris, born in 1999. Two other members of the family served with distinction. The fourth Earl’s father, Admiral Sir Edward Harris, served in several diplomatic posts and represented Christchurch in Parliament. The Right Reverend the Honorable Charles Amyand Harris (1813-1874), third son of the second Earl, was a clergyman who served as Bishop of Gibraltar from 1868 to 1873. Most of my southern estate area and Malmesbury material was located at Hampshire Records Office during 2007/8, but some extra snippets have filtered in since. Vast Malmesbury archives exist there. Most of my data is partially covered in several Meeting House archive files about the areas and properties mentioned above, even more at home. Going Green... Looking after our planet is essential. It has become more and more apparent that we need to care for our environment. With that in mind I took an honest look at how much plastic I use on a daily basis. What could I replace by an eco-friendly alternative? I have been amazed by what I saw. Toothpaste. Traditional toothpaste is not only stored in environmentally damaging plastic, but it contains chemicals which could be damaging to our own health too. The toothpaste opposite is natural and contained in glass, which can be reused. I chose to try the tea tree version. Known for its powerful healing properties, throughout history, Tea Tree leaves have been used to heal cuts, treat burns, and as a topical application for infections. This toothpaste is a paste-like clay, so it takes a little adjusting, but I have to say I have found it really good and much less harsh on my aging gums. The other alternative is the peppermint toothpaste tablets. With a more traditional flavour these would be ideal for when we are travelling. As they are not liquid, they will not take up any hand luggage space, in those little plastic bags either! Double bonus. Of course, I needed a plastic free
toothbrush to go with it, so the sustainable beechwood version opposite is perfect! There is a children’s one, soft bristles or medium. Suitable for all the family. Stephen, my husband has tried the shave bar recently and proudly showed me his silky-smooth skin after shaving the other day! He really likes this product, so we highly recommend it. Again, it is natural for the skin, no chemicals and it is in a plastic free container. A natural handmade shaving soap, for a traditional wet shave, so wave goodbye to harsh gels and foams, and say hello to a gently soothing and creamy lather. A winner to us. Stephen hasn’t tried the classic shave with the Bambaw’s stylish double edge safety razor yet. I may have to work on that one! We can all make small changes, one step at a time, that will make a huge difference to our planet, our wildlife and our oceans… and indeed better for our own health too. Talking about Wildlife...
Return of the birds Migration is a form of adaptation, vital to survival, as the changing seasons vary climate. As autumn approaches, we will start to see migrant birds returning to the UK, completing a journey of thousands of miles. What may look like chaos to us as we witness flocks of birds pass above, is actually part of a planned and calculated flight, unique to a species. Some will take a direct route, whereas others may prefer to follow a costal course. In the South of the UK, we are lucky to be winter hosts to members of the thrush family such as fieldfares and redwings; two migrant birds that resemble eachother. Fieldfares are large and yellowbreasted, whereas Redwings can be identified by distinctive bursts of orangey-red under its wings. Returning to nest in Iceland and Scandinavia around the end of March, these birds take this time to indulge in our berry-laden hedgerows, parks and woodlands. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Meadow Nature Reserve offers an excellent opportunity to see these migrating birds with its abundance of thick hedgerows. Fieldfares are sociable birds and can be seen in flocks of over 200. Increasing numbers of migrating birds, such as the fieldfares and redwings, are being spotted in our gardens. A combination of freezing conditions and the dramatic decrease of insect populations forces

these birds to take refuge, so don’t forget to top up your bird feeders or provide mealworms, cheese and suet to help keep feathered visitors energised this autumn and winter. Also look out for geese and wading birds will arrive in September and October in their hundreds and thousands. Dark-bellied brent geese flock to southern shores in early October. The Chesil Beach Centre, over looking the Fleet Lagoon, is a great place to see these birds in action. Holes Bay, Poole Harbour is the estuary (tidal mouth) of serval rivers and is therefore another perfect place to look out for migrating birds and some fantastic flocks can be seen late in the afternoon there. Coastal areas make excellent vantage points for a keen bird watcher, or even if you’re just starting out. Tips for watching migrating birds: 1. Check tide times and take precautions with appropriate clothing. 2. Time your visits: geese are mostly likely to be seen at sunrise and sunset. 3. Keep a record of birds arriving and departing over the season. 4. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars! By Holly Toman

Understanding Investments: What are you paying in Investment and Advice Charges? If you own an investment ISA, Pension or Insurance Bond you will be paying a fee to the investment managers. If the investment managers then spread your money across a range of other funds, you may be paying two sets of investment management fees (a fund of funds is a good example of this). If you also use the services of a financial adviser, you will probably be paying them a fee for ongoing advice and service. Of course, no one will manage your money for free, and the alternative is to keep your capital in cash in the bank or under the mattress, neither of which will earn you a return to keep pace with inflation. Whilst you are “saving” money on fees, the real value of your capital is reducing so it’s not much of a saving at all! The key to the most successful financial outcome is to ensure the fees you pay are reasonable for investment management and that the advice you pay for and receive adds value and helps you achieve your objectives. What is reasonable and what difference do fees really make? I would like to illustrate a couple of examples assuming two sets of typical fees, one of which I suggest is excessive and one reasonable. You can see that what you pay is important, and it matters more the longer you are invested. An average 65-year-old still has to plan for around 20 years and a 50- year- old for 30+ years (based on average life expectancy). If you do find you are paying fees in line with my “excessive” example, they may be justified by the statement “you get what you pay for” and explanations that the quality of the investment management justifies the higher fees. During the past 7 years (post Retail Distribution Review), the choice of high-quality investment solutions has increased and with a broader choice, pricing has become more competitive. The pensions market is a very good example where 1% per annum was seen as competitive but since the introduction of auto-enrollment (and more competition), between 0.5% and 0.75% is commonly available. To conclude, price isn’t everything and it can certainly be worth paying a little more for some investment management services than others, but it does matter. With a wide choice of investment providers, a high-quality service is now available at a reasonable price. As Warren Buffett once said; “Price is what you pay, Value is what you get”. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Daichi The Dashing Dude, our much-loved campervan, was missed last month. Certainly, one lady was quite upset that he had not taken us anywhere as we were too busy sailing the ocean waves around Alaska. Daichi himself had felt quite jilted and although he seemed ‘happy’ we had enjoyed ourselves, there was that little ‘frost’ in the air when he acknowledged ‘how pleased he was for us’. These Japanese vans do have a way about them… Well this month he was determined to make it up and he took us somewhere we had never been before – The Dorset Show. Yes! The Dorset Show. Can you believe it, we have never been. How ridiculous is that? I am sure that Daichi thought he could compete with all those immaculately dressed stallions. He rather fancied himself being groomed and brushed down. Or maybe it was all those jodhpurs and long leather boots, but that is going a little far as it is a family magazine after all. Daichi, really. The day was filled with blue

Amazing final jump of the six-bar event skies and some of our wonderful fluffy white clouds. My Mum and Dad came with us as Mum was celebrating her 75th Birthday and my Dad of 84 drove all the way from Hull for the special weekend. What better way than for Daichi to take us all out? One thing to mention here is that when Daichi was kitted out with all his new (designer, of course) interior, we made sure there were three seats in the back, not two. We find this useful as the three of us can go out, with another couple. It also means the bed is wider when it rolls out, though the cupboards are a little narrower, so we had the fridge fitted under the back seat to give us more space for the cupboards. Clever! Off we all set. Daichi grinning from wheel to wheel. It was busy! The car park was full. On arriving in the showground there were thousands of people walking around the stalls, eating and drinking at the many food places and looking for bargains in the market area. We love the atmosphere

29 at these events. There is something quite special about our English country shows and this was no exception. We were lucky enough to have tickets for the member’s lawn, so we found perfect seats right next to the fence to watch the horses and their riders give us a show of their lives. They all looked so handsome and fine. The winning jump of the six-bar event was a spectacular 5 foot 10 high! We have a photo of the last leap. It was so exciting. “The Osborne Refrigerators Double Harness Scurry Class” was such fun. Nearly as nifty as Daichi on those country roads, the horses speeded between cones, in and out, left and right, to be the fastest to the finish line with no faults. That must be really exhilarating to take part in. Daichi is looking into it… uh oh… The elegance of the “Coaching Marathon Class” in comparison showed Daichi the sedate life of the rich in the past. It evoked images of young ladies whiling away their hours in their long lacy gowns, waiting for their Prince to sweep them off their feet. Daichi is getting all romantic now. Beautiful, graceful, stylish and wonderful to watch. The judges really

Now Daichi... don’t go getting ideas! have to know what they are looking for to pick a winner from such a polished class. Quite different and very much in contrast was the “Adrenaline Tour Motorbike Stunt Show”. How skilled are these riders in flying their bikes high in the air, screaming off on two wheels, flipping their machines at right angles. Wow. I really am hoping that Daichi does not get any ideas on this, or we may feel like we are all at sea again! What a fantastic day. Of course, a ‘little’ shopping had to be done and Dad bought me my Birthday present (shush don’t remind him it is not till December…). A lovely handcrafted bird bath. I also bought a leather door stop which I am rather fond of. Mum and Dad loved the whole day too. Daichi was as proud as punch that we enjoyed ourselves so much. On the way home I did see him looking at himself admiringly, at the reflection in a shop window. I am sure he saw the muscles of a Mustang or was it the strength of a Steed? Daichi was in his element. So were we. Where will he take us next month I wonder! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
Jobs for October :-
• Make sure that plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. • Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. • Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! • If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years tim.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season. Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain (and we’ve all had enough of that lately!), and
also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

Hot Foot It To Bonfire Night Firewalk Wessex Cancer Trust needs daredevils to hot foot it to Sandbanks Beach in Poole this Bonfire Night and walk over hot coals to raise money for local families living with cancer. After a full safety briefing, walkers will be led over ten metres of coals heated to 1200°F (648°C) by certified instructors UK Firewalk. Bournemouth-based drumming band, Samba Panache, will heat up the atmosphere for the evening, and in a fitting finale participants will have the opportunity to watch fireworks light up the night sky across Poole Bay after their walk. Maria Tidy, Wessex Cancer Trust’s community engagement manager, said: “This is an adrenaline-fuelled event which requires an open mind and the determination to take up the challenge. All the money raised will go directly to providing free and local support to anyone living with cancer, so we wouldn’t want anyone to get cold feet!
