100th Anniversary of the Armistice 11am on Sunday 11th November 2018
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice between the Allies and Germany that ended the fighting in World War I. It is also known as the Armistice of Compiègne from the place where it was signed. It came into force at 11 a.m. Paris time on 11 November 1918 (“the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”) and marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany, although not formally a surrender. Sadly I doubt any community within the United Kingdom did not either lose someone or knew of someone who had lost someone. The Parish was much smaller in those days however this Parish lost four people in the First World War and eight in the Second Word War. Whole communities across the Country were devastated as groups of young men joined up together in regiments known as the Pals. Friends died together leaving communities changed forever, something which was to be altered for joining up in World War II. The St Leonards & St Ives Ex Services Club was formed in 1953 by 40 ex-servicemen who each paid one shilling into a fund. The Club was founded not only as a memorial to those fallen, but as a meeting place for ex-service personnel and their families to provide mutual support, comradeship and enjoyment. In more recent times, a Memorial Garden has been built within the club grounds in School Lane, St Ives and this year to mark the Armistice, a brass plaque will be attached to the garden’s Memorial Stone, inscribed with the names of the 12 men from the two villages who
fell during the two world conflicts. The annual Remembrance Day service will take place at All Saints Church, Ringwood Service Road, commencing at 10.45am promptly at the end of which at around 11.30am the congregation and any others wishing to participate are invited to attend the Ex Services Club in School lane where a military style parade and service will be conducted. Flags and Standards from the Royal Naval Association, Guides, Brownies, Rainbows, Scouts, Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts will march onto the Memorial garden. The Service will then be conducted by the Chaplain from the local branch of the RNA, whose headquarters are at the club, the Last Post and then Reveille will also be sounded. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath or cross will be most welcome but please contact the Parish Office on 01425 482727 so that this can be arranged. The Parish Council has given a small grant to assist the Club with their preparations and it is hoped that as many residents as possible will participate. Please remember to wear your poppy with pride, lest we forget...

Understanding Hearing Loss The ear is made up of three parts. The outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Sound is received by the outer ear and is channelled through the ear canal to the ear drum and the middle ear. Age Concern Lunch Clubs Isolation in later life is one of the biggest problems within our community. As we age and health problems slowly prevent us getting out and about we need for our mental health to continue to get out of our homes to meet friends and socialise. Age Concern have two very successful LUNCH CLUBS, in the area, one each Monday at St Leonards Village Hall Braeside Rd. and the other at the Barrington Centre in Ferndown on a Thursday Members arrive by mini bus or car at 10am and enjoy a morning coffee and chat whilst playing a variety of board games. A two course Hot Lunch is provided at noon, then the afternoon passes with a variety of entertainment [talks or music] and ends with tea and cake before returning home at 3pm.

Ringwood’s 1727 Meeting House The mass of material, and considerably more, upon which this series of Heritage articles are based can be studied at leisure within the archives at the Meeting House in Ringwood. Although it has stood on the site since 1727, many casual visitors admit to having passed by so often without realising what is inside. The name “Meeting House” so often prompts the immediate suggestion of “Quakers”, with an immediate response they were at the other end of town, where “Quaker Court” is the sole reminder of its existence in the 1690s. Early 18th century, a Ringwood vicar noted that he had 2,000 parishioners, of whom 800 were dissenters, of whom 600 were Presbyterians. It was the latter who, having previously met in members homes, hence the term “meeting house”, later in a nearby barn above a forge, and finally in the present building, built on land once the gardens of some High Street houses. Based on earlier treatments of any who opposed the controlling Anglican church, they thus maintained their low profile, away from the main thoroughfares, with just the “square furlong” of common grazing land and mostly open countryside beyond. In those days the chapel could no doubt
accommodate around 200 worshippers, the better off members renting the existing pews on the ground floor, while the rest found a seat within the rougher finished ones in the surviving galleries on three sides. A three tier pulpit probably existed on the southern side, the preacher at the top, a reader in the middle, and the clerk, probably recording attendance, at the bottom. A large pew in the south west corner of the gallery may once have housed musicians or singers. In 1845, within the will of William Clarke, benefactor of the Alms Houses, provision was made for an organ to be built by a local cabinet maker, plus funds to cover an organist. The present 500 plus pipe Wadsworth organ, although made c.1860, was not installed until 1933, obviously reducing the number of seats available within the galleries. Some older Ringwodians remember being tasked with pumping away at the back, nowadays covered by a compressor installed in the 1980s. An archive file shows the several groups of pipes being re-installed during the 2011 restoration. Recitals by a number of organists familiar with its operation and quirks are popular events.

15 In the mid-18th century, a large number of the congregation left, as “Independents”, to later build their own Lower Meeting House, today the site of Trinity Church. Archive files tell their separate history, plus that of various other groups such as Wesleyans, Methodists, Congregationalists. The Catholics eventually returned in the 1930s, initially to a small hut behind a bungalow, but today in their now renovated Italianate styled church in the Close. Before it was stolen during a break-in in 2002, the massive over 6ft tall 1730s clock was an imposing feature of the building. The original was made in Winchester by a Frenchman, was painted with intricate Chinoiserie features and lettering, had a black face with gold letters. It had an eight day movement, and struck once on every hour. It may have arrived on the premises around 1795, perhaps when a tax on private clocks was, briefly, imposed. However, there was already a law that churches, chapels and taverns all had to have a clock to enable the public to know the time. Today’s remarkably accurate replica is electronic, updated every minute via a sensor on the roof that uses a satellite signal that originates in Germany, as Ringwood’s reception of the UK’s Rugby signal is poor. The last Unitarian group to worship there went off to Bournemouth in the mid1970s. Development of the area for a
supermarket almost saw the Grade 2 building demolished. In 1977 an added “star” had preserved the interior, but, as the local authorities prevaricated as to its future, their appointed “steering group” resigned en bloc. The members immediately re-formed as the Meeting House Association Ltd., the registered charity that now maintains the building, paying a rental of a periodic peppercorn. By their efforts alone, the building opened as a community centre and museum in 1986. Three attempts became necessary before receiving just over £½M as a Heritage Lottery grant, plus additional donations and a legacy, to cover a £¾M major restoration in 2011. Today its existence continues to rely solely on admissions, refreshments, entertainments and events, membership, legacies and donations, as no regular funding is received from elsewhere. John Hawkins

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Hayden went to see Nellie, The Dorset Publications Campervan who had an accident a few months ago. She is now at the Old Van’s Home and like all good Grandparents she was keen to find out what her 14 year old ‘grandson’ had been up to over the summer. Hayden was very excited to tell her… “Well Nellie, I got to interview Red 10 at the Bournemouth Air Show!” He exclaimed with a big grin, nearly as big as Nellie’s silver shine. “I got to do this because I was asked by the Blue Skies Team. Blue Skies is a programme to help young people with their communication and leadership skills organised by the Jon Egging Trust. The Blue Skies Programme has helped me build up my confidence.” Hayden continued, “Before I was shy in asking people things, but now I have more self-confidence to talk to people: even those I don’t know, like Red 10!” The interview went like this… Hayden - What is your role within the Red Arrows Team? Adam (Red 10) - I’m the supervisor of the team. In the winter workout period I am the supervisor of the practices, looking at the display patterns and liaising with the authorities about the displays we are putting together. During the summer display season, I

Hayden and Squadron Leader Adam Collins am on the road with the team flying the spare aircraft and then supervising the displays and commentating about the displays. Hayden - What motivated you to work with the Red Arrows? Adam - It’s a unique opportunity and a unique job that when the opportunity came to apply for it, I couldn’t really turn it down. When the Red 10 job came up it was something that really appealed to me. That is why I am doing it. Hayden - What’s the best thing about being a Red Arrow? Adam - It is such a variety of things that we do. We have had such good weather this year, so we have done lots of full shows. I love meeting the public (like you to be honest) and the commentary. It is an honour to be the face of the RAF and also representing Great Britain when we go overseas. It is a unique job. Hayden - What is most challenging thing about being a Red? Adam - The variety, as we are constantly going from one thing to another. This weekend for example we have 5 or 6 Displays up and down the country so we are on a very tight timeline between displays. We do PR and media bits in between and it is really finding that balance

29 to do everything to the standards that we expect of ourselves, being able to switch from task to task and then to focus on it. It is quite tiring, you just have to manage that carefully, but really the best bits are the hardest bits as well. It really is one of the roles that is unique, you are always working hard, but it is always rewarding. Hayden – What has been your favourite time with the team? Adam – This is my first season so the whole season for me has been amazing and I shadowed my previous predecessor for couple of months last season. But really going to events like this, it is the reaction of the crowd when the jets arrive, and we start the display. It is that feedback from the crowd that is the real buzz. Hayden - What would you say to someone aspiring to be a Red Arrow pilot? Adam - I’d say to them that we all started somewhere. One of the aims of our RAF 100 this year is to inspire the next generation and really with our Shows that is what we are trying to do. All of us at the Red Arrows were at school once. We went to college or university, we did exams, we were doing revision and that kind of thing and it really is a step by step approach to then join the Air Force and go through flying training and ultimately join the Red Arrows, so my message really would be just to work hard and take it one step at a time. We all made it, so there is no reason why anyone else can’t!
Hayden – For my last question, what would you say to a young person who is struggling, to be the best they can be? Adam – Really it is that message that we have all started somewhere, we have all struggled at some point, be it through school or through education or going along through training and flying training. Keep persevering, take it one step at a time and all of sudden through struggling through something it becomes a great success. You are not going to get there instantly, so it is just working your way through it and having the right attitude, working hard and then eventually you will get there. Thank you. Great to meet you! Hayden turned back to Nellie, “Once I interviewed Red 10, I then got interviewed on the interview, by Bournemouth Air TV! It was quite a surprise. It made me really use all the skills I have learned from Blue Skies and I think I did ok, considering I wasn’t warned! Finally, I also got to meet the rest of the Red Arrows and other display teams. “I even had my photo taken with the pretty Wingwalkers (Nellie raised her wiper), as well as the Tiger’s Parachute Display Team from the British Army, Sally B’s pilots, the stunt pilot Rich Goodwin, the Strikemaster Pair and the new Team Raven were all there. How exciting was all that!” Nellie was super impressed with Hayden’s recitings and she hopes you had a great summer too! By Debbie Corney

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, large or small, at this time of year check all the pond plants and remove all dead and dying growth.
If you have a pump to run a fountain or waterfall, now is the time to clean and service it and store it until Spring. Feed the fish before Winter hibernation.
Cover the pond with netting to stop leaves from falling into the water and sinking to the bottom. Too much rotting vegetation in the water will create methane gas to the detriment of fish and other wildlife as well as a disgusting, smelly layer of sludge in the bottom that you will have to deal with, sooner or later!
If we have a severe winter, be ready to cover the pond completely during really freezing weather, or at least try to ensure fish can get oxygen by keeping a small area ice-free by using a ball or floating bowl. If the pond is covered with a sheet of ice, pour boiling water into the bowl until it can be lifted out.
In early Autumn, if you have clumps of marginal and bog plants, they can be divided and cut back the leaves of waterside plants.
Having said all that, I've actually seen goldfish frozen in solid ice for weeks, only to start swimming around perfectly happily when they thawed out - so what do I know?!

Planning permission granted for new cinema at Dolphin Shopping Centre The Dolphin Shopping Centre in Poole is pleased to announce planning permission has been granted by the Borough of Poole to convert existing space into a nine-screen cinema.
The former Argos store and adjoining units will be redeveloped into a new-build, nine-screen cinema complex, complete with four adjacent casual dining restaurants. Construction work is expected to start later this year. Empire Cinemas has signed a 25-year lease to operate what will be the first multiplex in the town centre, with one of the nine screens being open-air on the rooftop, giving a memorable experience for residents and holidaymakers. The cinema development is the latest announcement as part of the Dolphin’s £26 million programme of investment with Legal & General. Legal & General bought the centre in 2013 and is carrying out an 18-month improvement programme, with other changes including mall refreshes, public realm updates and new retailers. John Grinnell, centre manager at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, commented: “We’re delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted for this exciting multiplex cinema. This
latest investment will further shift the shopping centre towards a truly family-orientated offer and will help bring an element of trade that will extend into the evenings, creating a strong daytime and evening attraction for the south coast town. “The cinema, at the heart of the shopping centre, will help generate more vibrancy and appeal for the town centre as a whole and will provide significant additional amenity for visitors to the Dolphin.” Justin Ribbons, chief executive officer of Empire Cinemas, commented: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted. Empire Cinemas is thrilled to be returning to Poole as part of this fantastic new leisure facility at the Dolphin. With nine Screens including Empire Cinemas large format, IMPACT® Screen, D-Box and our open-air, rooftop screen there really will be ‘Something For Everyone’.” The Dolphin covers 530,000 square footage with over 100 retail, restaurant and leisure brands and has an annual footfall of 11 million.
