St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council News Volunteer Litter Pickers Thirteen residents have volunteered to undertake litter picking within the Parish. If you see them about say hello they are committed to helping the Parish stay clean and tidy. A couple of Councillors will also be joining the residents. Verge parking This continues to be an issue on some roads and with the wetter weather they quickly become a muddy mess and subsequently then devalue the area in which you live. Most in this area have driveways please encourage those in your house and your visitors to use them. Council Vacancy The Parish Council still has a vacancy for a Councillor if this is not filled by the 28th November meeting (deadline for applications 20th November 2018) then this will be suspended to the elections to be held on Thursday 2nd May 2019. Please look on the Parish website for further information www.stleonardspc.org.uk. Fireworks Yes it’s that time again. Not everyone enjoys the noise many with mental illness and those with dementia can become very
frightened and worried. Think twice before deciding to have fireworks at home an organised display is often much better and cheaper. Please consider your neighbours especially if you know they have animals if they know when you will start and finish at least they can get prepared.
100th Anniversary of the Armistice
11am on Sunday 11th November 2018 A reminder that the annual Remembrance Day service will take place at All Saints Church, Ringwood Service Road, commencing at 10.45am promptly at the end of which at around 11.30am the congregation and any others wishing to participate are invited to attend the Ex Services Club in School lane where a military style parade and service will be conducted. Flags and Standards from the Royal Naval Association, Guides, Brownies, Rainbows, Scouts, Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts will march onto the Memorial garden. The Service will then be conducted by the Chaplain from the local branch of the RNA, whose headquarters are at the club, the Last Post and then Reveille will also be sounded. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath or cross will be most welcome but please contact the Parish Office on 01425 482727 so that this can be arranged. The Parish Council has given a small grant to assist the Club with their preparations and it is hoped that as many residents as possible will participate Please remember to wear your poppy with pride, lest we forget...

Charlotte’s sponsored hair cut Charlotte Biss from Ashley Heath contacted Poole Hospital Cancer Treatment Trust saying she wanted to organise an event, with the help of family and friends, to raise funds to help Poole Hospital. The Hospital had helped not only her but also family members and she wished to give something back. The Trust raises funds to assist Poole Hospital by purchasing items of equipment to assist them in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of cancer. Charlotte proposed having eight inches of her hair cut off and donated, she also arranged for a calender of her brother and his friends to be made and sold, an auction and other events at her home on a beautiful day during the summer. She
raised a wonderful sum of £3,693.77 on the day. What a result - the Trust were delighted by Charlotte’s caring thoughts. Our photos show Charlotte with her new hair style and presenting her cheque to the Chairman of Poole Hospital Cancer Treatment Trust, Stuart Dean and with family members who were involved on the day.

Heritage: Lest We Forget - WW1 As we commemorate the centenary of the 1918 Armistice this month, efforts have been made to ensure that all the initials and surnames on the Ringwood War Memorial are correctly listed on file, although it is apparently not permitted to make any physical amendments to correct the several errors on the memorial itself. The dates on which almost all the 111 WW1 names each made the supreme sacrifice were found, principally by using Commonwealth War Grave Records originally researched for all the memorials up and down the Avon Valley in 2001/2. A complete set of these files, created by the late Bernard Luckham, were donated by his widow last year. His colleague, Allan Petty, has recently also donated his photographs of almost all the Avon Valley memorials. These will all be used or made available during the exhibition dedicated to Ringwood and the Great War at the Meeting House throughout this month. The particular significance for our Parish area is that during WW1 it still formed part
of Ringwood. My August 2014 researches following a rather late Town Council proposal for a Lantern of Remembrance, seen here in August 2014, with a dedication ceremony scheduled for 3rd September, thus invoked the need to include all 53 WW2 names. For that conflict, in our case we were on better ground, as we became an independent parish in 1932, and had our own memorial at “All Saints” church. For WW1 my researches only came up with two names that were identifiable as being from our parish area, confirmed earlier by a book about the Parish Church by David and Dorothy Clarke in 1996. Earlier this year, just five of the 111 remained yet to be identified. This year the date, correctly spelt surname, revised initials and local widow were found for one. Whilst confusing some duplicated surnames for others, my “Great War Forum” source did suggest a month and year for two more. None of the three were from our parish. Of the other two, a S(amuel?) Trussell, might yet have a local link, as that surname

15 has been found within a 1930s Directory for the Parish area. Of the two positive WW1 identities, the first is Frederick Ernest Victor Willcox, aged 22, but spelt “Wilcox” on the War Memorial. He was serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry in the Portsmouth Battalion of the Royal Navy Division, having enlisted at Southampton on 7th July 1910. He saw service at Dunkirk and in the defence of Antwerp. Moving to the Middle East in February 1915, he became involved in the ill-fated attempt to open a second front in the Dardenelles. He was awarded the DSM for “gallant and courageous action” earlier at Kaba Tepe on 6th May, which no doubt, together with the high casualty rate, must surely have contributed to his having been promoted to Acting Sergeant. In the trenches at Gallipoli he was apparently shot in the head and killed on 3rd July 1915. In the confused situations of those actions, he has no known grave, but his name appears on one of the panels of the Helles Memorial. Born at Alverstoke, Gosport in 1893, his parents Frederick and Harriet came to St. Leonards and lived at a “Rose Cottage”, at the lower end of today’s Woolsbridge Road, known at the time as Gipsy Bottom. In Frederick’s honour, they renamed it “Gallipoli”, and the turn of the century cottage survives today under yet another name near the junction with Sandy Lane.
The other known local death concerns Ordinary Telegraphist George Charles Gordon Brackley, Royal Navy, per the Clarke’s book the son of the verger at the time of “All Saints” Church. Born, according to another later researcher, in Acton, Middlesex on 4th June 1900, his parents Charles and Emily had apparently moved to Cambridge Cottage in St. Ives during that village’s early development, thus validating his appearance on the Ringwood memorial at the time of his death. However, by the time the memorial was built in 1921, they seem to have moved to Harbridge. Such are the vaguaries of the validation of an individual’s appearance on a particular war memorial. Using some of my naval records, at the time of his death, well away from any naval action, George was serving in HMS “Africa”, an old dreadnought, when she was caught up in the “Spanish flu” epidemic whilst at Freetown, Sierra Leone. The ship was placed in quarantine, many became sick, George among them. At his death aged 18 on 13th September 1918, he joined the rest buried ashore in the so called “King Tom” cemetery. During 2017, a list of 16 names with alleged links with our parish was obtained during a Hampshire Genealogical event held at the Meeting House. Here we find men born of parents in widely separated places, and some relatively close, such as Ferndown and a farm west of the Moors River. In another case, Jubilee Cottage in St. Ives is confused with No.1 Jubilee Cottages in Ringwood. Given the eight names for WW2, this may account for the total of twelve suggested within the article in the October Directory. Understanding Investments: What are they and why should you own them? I am going to flip the question around to first answer “Why should you own them?”. To which there is a one-word answer; Inflation! Inflation is the silent assassin to a comfortable retirement and currently stands at between 2.7% and 3.5% per annum (depending on its measure). It reflects the price increase of a basket of goods & services and at 3.5% prices double every 20 years - unhelpful for people on a fixed income in retirement! It is usually vital that savings are able to at least keep pace with inflation, otherwise your capital on paper might be growing but its purchasing power is actually diminishing. If your savings can grow at a higher rate than inflation, you will require less savings in the first instance or they will last longer during retirement. What are Investments? “Cash is king” is a correct statement for short term expenditure, i.e. for any capital required within the next 3 to 5 years. It is low risk, relatively secure and provides liquidity. However, the returns are low and won’t combat inflation. I will focus on 3 of the main asset class alternatives. Fixed Interest Investments Government Gilts & high-quality Investment Grade Corporate Bonds are a way for the Government (Gilts) and Corporations (Bonds) to borrow. They are issued for a fixed term and offer a fixed level of interest (coupon), usually at a higher rate than cash. They won’t beat inflation but are a way to earn more interest than cash whilst taking a low level of risk. Property Residential and Commercial Property has the ability to appreciate in value over time. It can also generate an income (buy-to let
residential or as a commercial landlord). Therefore, it can be effective as Howard Goodship an asset to beat inflation but can also go through periods of decline and at these times can be relatively illiquid. Shares - (Stocks/Equities) A way to purchase a small piece of a company and share in the company profits. A company will usually reinvest part of their profits for future growth and pay a proportion to shareholders as a dividend. Over time, rising profits should lead to a rising share price & dividend payments, which help meet or beat inflation. However, over the short-term prices can fluctuate up or down significantly depending on many external factors. Clearly there are risks associated with each asset class, which is why owning a combination of them all is often the most effective way to invest. How much you have to invest, your proposed lifestyle, your sensitivity to fluctuations in the value of your capital and your timescale will dictate how much you invest in each asset class. In the next issue, I will explain the most common products and tax wrappers available in each of these assets and discuss ways to diversify and reduce risk. Talking about Wildlife...
There’s something wild about Brownsea
Dorset Wildlife Trust is launching a new and exciting project called Wild Brownsea designed to bring people in Dorset closer to nature and needs your help to secure the future of a unique island.
Over the next three years we will look to upgrade the visitor facilities on the island’s nature reserve, while reducing the impact of visitor numbers on the fragile island habitat. By recognising the islands full potential as the perfect place to offer a richer wildlife experience, we will inspire future generations to protect our precious wildlife and wildplaces. But we need to reach our fundraising target by January 2019, for every £1 you donate the wildlife of Brownsea gets £10. For such a small island Brownsea has had an eventful past and now looks to play an equally important role in the future of wildlife conservation in Dorset. It has been gifted by Kings and Queens, set alight and bombed by the Luftwaffe in WWII and even hosted the first Boy Scout camp in 1907. It’s a wonder it’s survived to tell the tale. New Forest Ponies
When you visit The New Forest there are a group of about 5,000 locals that you can’t but help noticing. They have been hanging around for about 2,000 years and what they don’t know about the forest is not worth knowing. We are talking about the wonderful New Forest Ponies of course! All of the ponies found in the forest are wild in the sense they can roam freely but in fact they are owned by New Forest Commoners. The commoners have the right to graze their ponies and cattle on the open forest throughout the year. It is the animals’ grazing which helps to keep the New Forest’s landscape and rare species which you can enjoy today. The ancient tradition of commoning dates back from before the days when William the Conqueror made this area his private hunting reserve and imposed strict laws on the locals. In return for this, the locals were given the rights to graze their animals on the ‘common’ (this being the land which is now known as the New Forest). Think of the New Forest as one large farm! If you have ever wondered why the grass is so neat and tidy here in the New Forest it is thanks to our ponies and cows! In fact, their grazing and browsing supports rare plant species including wild gladiolus and chamomile. This in turn helps the wider ecosystem and encourages other species to thrive here including the Dartford
warbler and the southern damselfly. In fact, the southern damselfly lays its eggs in the water-filled hoofprints of ponies (and cattle) nearby to the streams that pass through the New Forest. Each year, the ponies are rounded up in what are called drifts. Over thirty of these drifts take place during the summer and autumn each year giving the commoners a chance to check the health of their animals and wean and handle the foals.. You will find New Forest ponies dotted all around our National Park. With around 5,000 of them, it won’t be too long until you spot one. There is plenty of nutritious food available for the ponies and you will often find them grazing across the open moorland in small groups. You may see some of our ponies have silver collars on them. When the ponies are rounded up as part of the drift, some of them have these reflective collars put on them to help make them more visible at night time. However, not all of them are caught and some are good at losing them! If you are driving at night and see a reflective collar on a dark road then take it as an indication that there are animals about, some of which you may not be able to see so easily, so please drive with caution. Up, up and away... screaming away. It was a far cry from my blissful wander with nature. Fun though I have to say, but shush, don’t tell the boys that! Stephen and Hayden had a thrilling ride on Zip Wire, while I looked after the bags (a rather good excuse…). Stephen, who does not like heights, tried to get off rather quickly at the end and looked a little white, but I think he enjoyed it! Actually, both he and Hayden were grinning from ear to ear. It gave them that adrenaline rush these boys so yearn. Oh for that cup of coffee… The whole day was truly enjoyable. Tim Smit wanted to create a “symbol of optimism where ordinary people working together could do the nearly impossible.” What an amazing purpose. Nellie was truly impressed when we recounted our day to her. Ever optimistic herself and always happy when we have a family day out, she also grinned from headlight to headlight. Exclusive 100th Birthday Celebration raises thousands for Dorset Blind Association Dorset Blind Association, a charity helping blind and partially sighted people across Dorset to live happy lives, held their exclusive Centenary Ball took place on Saturday 13th October at the Hilton Hotel, Bournemouth. The prestigious 100th Anniversary celebration raised a phenomenal £22,705 on the night: an incredible amount and also the most that the charity has ever raised in one event. The event, which was kindly sponsored by long-running supporter Blue Sky Financial Planning, saw over 160 guests put in an appearance to celebrate an impressive 100 years of Dorset Blind Association, with guests arriving in their finest dinner suits and posh frocks to a red carpet welcome complimentary glass of champagne, followed by a three-course dinner with wine and coffee. The Centenary celebrations were thoroughly embraced by the guests, who tried their hands at the Viva Las Vegas Casino, danced the night away to the fantastic sounds of Swing Unlimited Big Band and participated in the accompanying raffle and auction. To get the guests up and moving after dinner, a fun and thoroughly entertaining game of Heads or Tails was played to music. Guests had the opportunity to meet the charity’s patrons, Lord and Lady Julian and Emma Fellowes, and DBA President, James Weld. On display was an exhibition of Dorset Blind Association’s extensive history, featuring a timeline of the most important milestones in the past 100 years of this local charity. Jonathan Holyhead, Chief Executive Officer of Dorset Blind Association, said:
“The evening was a wonderful, happy way to help celebrate our centenary. I am absolutely thrilled by the amount raised and I cannot thank people enough for their generosity. This money will go towards the provision of future services and support for blind and partially sighted people across Dorset, so a great many people will benefit from it and on their behalf I want to say “thank you”, again, to everyone who helped make the Ball such a huge success.” The charity have now held their annual Ball for 4 years, and will be returning with their Masquerade theme next year on Saturday 26th October. Get the date in your diary now so you won’t miss out on this spectacular evening. Dorset Blind Association receive no statutory funding, relying wholly on the kind support and goodwill of the local community to keep their vital services going. Spring Flowering Bulbs
Many bulbs, such as crocus, daffodils and snowdrops will increase naturally in most sites and with different flowering times there will be a succession of interest. If planted in your flower beds, the dying foliage will be hidden by growing herbaceous plants and shrubs. Bulbs are best planted in groups of similar colour and a wonderful show will be created if they are combined with flowers of contrasting colour that bloom at the same time. Try tulips planted with forget-me-nots or wallflowers.
Under trees with no leaves, bulbs will get any available sunlight so will grow happily and give a welcome splash of colour when nothing else has yet woken up. Bulbs can be planted in grass - perhaps in the lawn or a grassy bank - as long as the foliage has time to die down before the first mowing. Grass protects bulbs from mice and squirrels. Try Anemone blanda, chionodoxa, crocus, fritillaria, daffodils (narcissus). Some bulbs are best lifted each year such as tulips and to make this easier you could try planting them in large pots and sinking them in the ground. After the leaves have died down, lift the bulbs and let them dry out. Store somewhere cool and dry and replant in October/November for a spring display. If buying new bulbs, plant as soon as possible and before they start growing. For instance, most daffodils will start producing roots by late summer and other bulbs by midautumn. One exception is snowdrops. These are best bought 'in the green' which means the leaves are already growing and they are then planted and left to spread. Bulbs should always be planted with, at the very least, 2-3 times their own depth of soil above them or even more if the soil is very light. If bulbs become overcrowded, lift them in the dormant season after the foliage has died down. Clean off the soil, leave them to dry then store in paper (not plastic) bags to await replanting.

Naturally good... This is similar to the classic cauliflower cheese but has the added kick of wholegrain mustard which pairs really well with the mature cheddar cheese. The recipe uses a small amount of corn starch/corn flour to thicken the sauce rather than using a traditional roux, this reduces the carbohydrate levels while still making a smooth creamy sauce.
MUSTARD & CHEDDAR BROCCOLI BAKE Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large head of broccoli 4oz (120ml) heavy cream (double cream) 3 oz (85 g) mature cheddar cheese (extra sharp cheddar cheese) 3 tbsp parmesan cheese (shredded) 1 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp corn starch (corn flour) dissolved in 1 tbsp water Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°c
First prepare the broccoli by cutting it into even sized
florets. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and add the broccoli. Cook for approximately 3 minutes to slightly soften the broccoli, but not cook it through. Drain and rinse under cold running water to cool. Set to one side while you make the cheese sauce. To make the sauce, place the cream and mustard into a saucepan on a medium low heat, heat the mixture and once it comes to a simmer add the cheddar cheese and stir through until melted. While stirring add the corn starch mixture and continue to cook for a further minute or so until the sauce thickens, add salt and pepper to taste. Make sure that the broccoli is well drained - pat the broccoli dry with paper towels to remove any excess water. Place the broccoli into a baking dish and spoon over the cheese sauce; make sure the broccoli is well covered. Sprinkle over the parmesan cheese and a pinch of paprika if you wish. Place into the oven and bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

BLUE PLANET II - LIVE IN CONCERT Community News
BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE - WEDNESDAY 13 MARCH 2019 BBC presenter Anita Rani has been announced as host for Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, ahead of a 13-date UK & Eire arena tour in March 2019. A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer said of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural
wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to mention but a few. The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. The UK & Eire arena tour are committed to reducing environmental impact. All of the arena venues have long term goals to reduce the use of plastic, lower carbon footprints, reduce energy consumption and improve awareness. During the filming of the Blue Planet II television program, film crews embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries and spent over 6,000 hours of deep sea diving armed with the latest state of the art equipment. Take a deep breath and discover a whole new world hidden beneath the surface of the sea. Hosted by Anita Rani, the Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will allow the audience to share an enjoy this voyage of discovery in an epic live audio-visual experience unlike any other.

Wines: Choice Desserts Dessert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are ‘late harvested’, incorporate ‘noble rot’ (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can be sparkling and fortified, also. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular, for many dining occasions. Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the Limarí Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine. Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite from the 17th
century, the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and, of course, volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.
Torres Floralis (Spain) is a further popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making FloralisMoscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations.
