Pavements and verges
I know that this is sometimes difficult, a guest turns up and parks for a minute thinking they are less obtrusive by parking up on the pavement, perhaps there are a lot of parked cars on the road or it’s dustbin day there are lots of excuses. But please, please think if you were in a wheelchair could you get by, could a pushchair or someone even just carrying bags? Why should that person have to go out into the road to get by your vehicle? In some locations this is incredibly dangerous but parking on pavements and verges can be the result. If you are in or pushing a wheelchair your life is difficult enough without having to go back and find a lowered kerb to get around that vehicle. How would you feel if a car came around that corner and hit that person avoiding your car that you parked blocking or part blocking the pavement or verge? Speak to those in your household, think when a visitor arrives about where they have parked. Consider actually encouraging the use of your driveway. New Forest Show to donate all revenue from child ticket sales to The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is donating all proceeds from child ticket sales at the 2019 Show to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary. The bursary was established in 2018 in memory of Samantha Bailey and her unborn daughter Florence both of whom passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Samantha had been heavily involved with the Cattle Section of the New Forest Show for many years. The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July and 1st August 2019 at New Park, Brockenhurst. Tickets are available to purchase online now from the New Forest Show website. Sam was a young farmer and estate agent living in Tiptoe, Sway. Following in the footsteps of her grandparents and mother she led a wonderful life breeding and showing the Sandlea herd of Charolais cattle. At just 34 years of age Sam tragically fell ill on 16th January 2018 and died eight days after losing their daughter Florence late in the pregnancy. Sam was also a longstanding member of the New Forest Show’s Cattle Committee. The New Forest Agricultural Show Society set up a bursary in their memory. The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary aims to support young people in agricultural education, with two main aims: • Fund students attending agricultural college, allowing them to begin a career in agriculture. • Pay for applicants to attend short courses that will benefit their career in agriculture The bursary is supported and administered
by The New Forest Agricultural Show Society. The amount of subsidy provided will depend on the money raised throughout the year. All children aged 5-15 can enter the 2019 New Forest Show for just £1. Heritage: Getting About At the Meeting House this month, my exhibition is a specialist subject of my own, about Hackney Carriages since the 16th century. Given the relatively sparse public transport locally, since failing the DVLA eyesight test last year, a taxi initially became my own means of regularly visiting Ringwood to continue my work as historian and archivist. Going back in time, given the lack of residents within our parish over the centuries, those who have lived here or were passing through have routinely had to “do-it-themselves”, either on foot, by horse or cart, or, if wealthy enough, their own carriage. A problem for many in those earliest days was, of course, the lack of a rather significant requirement, actual roads. In my second article “Roadworks” in March 2017, a maze of random pathways across the “New Barn Field” heathland appear on this 1755 Hampshire map by Isaac Turner. For those then leaving Ringwood, they spread out in all directions from Ashley Cross, just west of the Avon. There was a semblance of three well-trodden paths; crossing the Moors River at Wool Bridge for “Winborn” or further south at Palmer’s Ford for Poole. A third southerly route went past “Wester Farm” and “Kiddn” for “Herne” and Christchurch.
In these earliest times, parishes were responsible for the upkeep of roads and bridges, and local landowners and tenants had to provide the labour to do so. The idea of the “King’s Highway” created some precedents, particularly if the monarch and court were scheduled to pass by on one of their “progresses”, latterly in our particular case when visiting Weymouth to take to the waters, a favourite with the early Georges. Improvements to these primary routes resulted after Turnpike Acts, a Ringwood Turnpike Trust becoming responsible for those towards Wimborne and Poole in the 1760s. To save money, they eventually provided a single route across our heath that has become the A31. Then, beyond the Moor’s River they split the route at today’s Tricketts Cross, one section heading southwest as far as the ford at Longham, the other westwards towards Wimborne. Costs of their provision and maintenance brought the imposition of tolls, locally collected at tollhouses. 15 Meeting House. Distances from London at the time were measured from its outer limits, in our case 92 miles from Hyde Park Corner. Today it is a little further being measured from Charing Cross. Originally stones were provided at each mile point, marked as such on many old maps. Cast-iron replacements appeared locally mid/late 19th century, made by Ringwood based Armfield ironworks, this one (below left) in the service road in St. Ives. Lists of charges for all manner of road users are available in “Roads” files H07A & B, as well as details of the fines that applied to a host of things that were not permitted on or in the vicinity of the turnpike, many rather obvious, but several somewhat obscure. Local travel within our area was almost all through traffic, either carters conveying goods, mostly from Poole where the landing charges were cheaper than at Southampton, or the stage and mail coaches, the latter sounding their posthorns to ensure the tollgate was open and did not delay their passage. Ringwood was a major “stage” in these routes, their times published in various local and trade Directories, of which several early examples are on file. From 1847 onwards even the railways shot through our area non-stop, apart from the “request” stop at Avon Halt from 1862 to 1935. Prior to 1919, the children had to walk into school
at Ringwood, until a 1909 Wesleyan Chapel became the local school from 1919 to 1926, today known as the “Old School House”. When this became unsustainable locally, the education authorities at last agreed to bus the children into Ringwood. When Ashley Halt appeared in 1927 it offered an alternative, as well as a local service to the secondary education on offer at Brockenhurst College, here in 1963, but even that disappeared with the rest of the lines with the Beeching cuts in 1967. However, overall matters had been improving with the development of motorised bus and coach services in the 20s and 30s. This popular Ringwood view shows the horse-drawn “Royal Blue” coach outside the Town Hall. Their name later survived as a Bournemouth based motor coach service for many years. In Ringwood itself, numerous family firms offered a private taxi service, often based in the proprietor’s garage, and several included charabancs for group and family outings. Local bus services were initially based in a building opposite the Lamb Inn, convenient for rail travellers. In the 1960s the bus companies took over the old site of Carter’s brewery on West Street. Two “Picture” files at the Meeting House contain a photographic record over the years of these local “Road Transport” items, while Tony White’s “Yesteryear” articles since 1990 tell of many of the families’ histories. Talking about Wildlife...
The Underwater World Whether you’re one minute away from the beach or one hour, for many of us, living so close to the sea is one of the best things about living in Dorset. Already this year, our marine conservation team have been finding exciting and unusual things washed up on our beaches at low tide. The ‘furrowed crab’ was a great find with it being the first recording of this species for Kimmeridge. This crab is also a ‘climate change indicator species’ as we’re seeing them spread further north, in line with our seas warming up. Other seashore species which have been spreading eastwards into Dorset include the ‘toothed topshells’. These sea snails are common further west but have grown from none at all in the early 2000s to being a common find at Kimmeridge. The small cushion starfish has also become common at Kimmeridge since the first sighting in 2014, and the exotic-looking anemone shrimp that lives within the stinging tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, has also increased in number in recent years. This year, World Oceans Day is celebrating our oceans, encouraging everyone to get out and explore their nearest coastline. You could take part in a 2-minute beach clean, try some rockpooling, or even see what rainbow colour wonders lie in the gardens beneath the seas with DWT’s snorkel trail at Kimmeridge. Seahorses: There have been an unusual amount of seahorses washed up on beaches this year. This could be a good indicator that we have a healthy population in Dorset. Let us know if you find one! 2. Cushion starfish: In rockpools, the cushion star glides along on its myriad tiny tube-feet, as if sliding on ice. This small relative of star fish feeds by everting part of its stomach through its mouth to digest dead and decaying animals and seaweed. 3. Flat periwinkle: Look for the flat periwinkle in seaweedy pools. They range in colour from sunshine yellow, through burnt orange to chocolate brown and are easy to spot amongst the sea wrack fronds they graze on. The yellow shells are particularly easy to spot, looking like discarded sweetcorn kernels! By Sally Welbourn

Understanding Investments: Inheritance Tax Mitigation
What if your retirement lifestyle is secured and you have more capital and/or income than you need? What strategies can you put in place and when should you do this if you want to avoid paying further tax on your demise? The tax rules and exemptions regarding Inheritance Tax are well covered and I won’t recite them here. I would rather focus on high-level, practical strategies for you to consider. Effective Estate Planning In my experience, the greatest barrier to effective estate planning is a client worrying whether they have enough income/capital to last their lifetime. Quite rightly, they don’t want to leave themselves short and be forced to reduce their own lifestyle or worse, ask for any monetary gifts to be returned! So, I have put together a suggested strategy to answer that concern: 1. Prepare a cash-flow projection using current capital and income vs expenditure. Build into this inflation, anticipated capital expenditure and likely future changes such as reduced travel, additional funds to pay for help at home as you age and care home costs. Whilst you cannot predict the future, you can prepare for it and this projection helps quantify your likely needs. We prepare this for our clients and call it a “Lifetime Financial Plan.” Your plan can be adjusted as you grow older to account for changes to key assumptions. 2. The plan identifies any surplus capital which you are unlikely to require. For some clients whose income exceeds their expenditure, it also illustrates how the surplus capital will continue to grow as the surplus income accumulates and compounds the Inheritance Tax (IHT) issue. 3. If surplus capital is identified, Annual Exemptions exist which allow you to gift smaller sums (the most significant being £3000 per donor per annum) without having to survive seven years. Once exemptions have been utilized, you can then decide whether to gift funds outright or gift into a Trust. The reason client’s consider using trusts is usually around control and protection of the capital. As financial advisers we spend considerable time understanding this before recommending the most suitable solution.
4. Once a plan is in place for the capital, it is important that surplus Howard Goodship income doesn’t accumulate and re-build the original IHT issue. An often overlooked exemption is “regular gifts out of surplus income” so a strategy for making these should be put into place. Again, these gifts can be made outright or into a Trust and are immediately outside of an estate for IHT purposes. 5. Finally, there may still be an IHT liability. If so, it is possible to insure against that liability through Whole of Life Insurance, written into Trust. This can provide liquidity for the beneficiaries to pay any tax liability on the death of the donor. When is the best time to address Inheritance Tax planning? There is no right answer, but I usually suggest client’s settle into retirement, so they are better able to understand their likely expenditure requirements and then we can have an informed initial discussion. It is important to remember that one must survive seven years from the date of a capital gift for the capital to be deemed outside of one’s estate. In my experience, effective inheritance tax planning is best done gradually over a number of years with a strategy and initial steps taken following the creation of a “Lifetime Financial Plan.” We can then review the plan on an ongoing basis. Like all planning, it is best done with proper thought, in good time and not left to the last-minute! Next month, I will cover the different types of Trusts and provide ideas on how they can be used. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Daichi, otherwise known as “The Dashing Dude”, our new Dorset Publications Campervan, sees himself as a young, playful yet rather debonair kind of guy, so when he decided to take us to see the Dinosaur Footprints in the Purbecks, we were rather surprised. How can anything be that old!? (I did not look in the mirror this morning…) How on earth can these footprints be engraved for so long in the hard Purbeck stone? What a feat of nature. Our Jurassic Coastline is packed with amazing history for us to explore and marvel at, and Daichi could not wait to get us there. Dashing along the country roads, bouncing over the hills with magnificent views over the rolling countryside, Daichi was in his element. He is so glad he travelled over thousands of miles of terrain to finally arrive on our beautiful English soil.

Daichi serves up lunch... with a view! The footprints can be found at Keats Quarry along the Priest’s Way on the Purbeck Coastline. Can you believe that these dinosaurs roamed our land some 140 million years ago! (Maybe I do not feel so bad about my age after all.) Yes, that long ago and we can still see their footprints today, fossilized in the rock. It is thought that this was a shallow lagoon where these brachiosaurs (translated as “arm lizard”) would gather to drink together. They were long necked plant eating dinosaurs, around 50 tonnes each, or five times the weight of a modern elephant, and measured more than 25 metres from nose to tail. Wow, that’s BIG! The environment was very different then too and shows the ever-changing climate that we live in. It is believed that this area was a sub-tropical wilderness of coastal forests and swamps. Over time, the footprints left in the soft mud were covered over by layers of

29 rock and preserved as the fossils we see today. Hayden had great fun trying to step from footprint to footprint, to literally follow in the dinosaurs’ footsteps. He finished up leaping (boys…) across at full stride, but even that was not enough. These dinosaurs were massive. Quarrymen Kevin Keates and Trevor Haysom discovered this amazing find in 1997 when the site was still being worked and Daichi is certainly glad they did. What a find! The famous Dancing Ledge is nearby and Daichi was all ears when he found out that this pool was blasted out of the rocks by a former headmaster of Dunford School, so that the pupils could swim in the summer. The school sadly no longer exits but its salty water pool enjoyed by thousands over the years is a playful legacy it has left behind. It so happens that Hayden, our son had been doing his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his school, and by chance he had done his expedition in the Purbecks with his friends. They had walked for two full days, carrying all their equipment,
One small step for a dinosaur... from the car park at the Sandbanks Chain Ferry to Corfe Castle where they camped for the night, then onto Swanage the next day. They looked pretty exhausted, but all were smiling when they arrived triumphant at their destination. I am sure the dinosaurs would have done this route in no time, with those powerfully long, yet graceful legs. It is fascinating to think that these boys and girls in 2019 took a very similar route to those amazing, extinct creatures of yesteryear, some 140 million years ago. Now there is a thought… Daichi was very proud he took us to somewhere we had never been before. That is his purpose, with his chirpy step and tooting horn. Where will he take us next, I wonder? On Your Plot
Expanding your horizons Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.
Jobs for June :-
• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem. Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost?
Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

Tastes so good... Spanish Baked Eggs
A taste from the Costas – ideal served as lunch with a fresh green salad, and eaten al fresco (if the British Summer weather allows!) A perfect holiday reminder that’s quick and easy to prepare.
Ingredients for 4 servings 4 x large free range eggs 100g sliced chorizo 1 onion finely sliced 1 red/yellow pepper sliced 2 crushed garlic cloves ½ tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp. olive oil Chopped parsley
1. Pre-heat oven to 200c/Fan180C/400F/Gas Mark 6 2. In a heated pan, add olive oil and lightly cook the chorizo and onion for about 4 minutes until soft. Add the pepper and cook. 3. Stir in the paprika and garlic and cook for about a minute before adding the tomatoes to the pan. Simmer until all ingredients are soft. 4. Pour into an ovenproof dish, make four wells and carefully crack the eggs over the mixture into each well, cover with foil and bake in pre-heated oven for approx. 10 minutes or until the eggs are just set but the yolks should still be runny.
Serve with: Green Salad Crusty/toasted bread
5. Optional – you can add some parsley to top the baked mixture Serve with a fresh green salad of your choice with crusty or toasted bread, and enjoy. Try varying the ingredients for new tastes, for example with extra peppers, sliced potato or even baked beans.
