Local young lady wins two titles on road to Miss England 2018 A first in Miss England - Stephanie Wyatt wins TWO titles!
Whoever is crowned Miss World will walk away with a £100,000 cash prize.
THE winner of this year’s Miss Dorset and Miss Hampshire is already looking ahead to the Miss England finals.
Stephanie will now spend a year working to inspire other young people to help the environment, as an ambassador for the not-for-profit organisation, We Do Ethical Living.
Stephanie Wyatt, aged 18, was awarded the county title at the climax of the regional heats. For months she has been championing green living in a bid to highlight the benefits of a more sustainable Dorset, competition organisers say.
She will also attend charity events, awards ceremonies and business galas.
Stephanie, from Poole, said: “It is an absolute honour to be crowned Miss Dorset and Miss Hampshire and I now look forward to attending the Miss England Finals. “I’m excited, nervous and overwhelmed but I was always told if your dreams do not scare you then you are not dreaming big enough.” Stephanie will compete in Miss England in July, which is the UK’s official entry point to the Miss World contest.

Links to Dorset’s Greenspaces and Volunteering Whatever the reason, exercise, socialising, hiking, horse riding, admiring the plants and wildlife, enjoying a view or climbing a tree, evidence suggests, we can all benefit from being outdoors in the fresh air, and around nature. There are almost 3,000 miles of public rights of way in Dorset: 4,700 footpaths, 1,700 bridleways and 37 byways. This network of paths serves as many things for many people, from providing a link to the countryside, a safer short cut to the local school, a long distance walking route, a safe place to commute by bike or simply an accessible route to a greenspace. A well maintained link to a greenspace or the wider countryside can improve the quality of life for many, not least those that are less mobile. The East Dorset Green Spaces Team are looking for volunteers to become part of an expanding network of enthusiastic individuals, who help take responsibility for maintaining our rights of way and conservation sites. Whether you are looking for a great day out in the countryside, a way to get active and take more exercise, or a first step into a career in the countryside or conservation sector - volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded people and learn more about your local countryside
sites, and gain some new skills. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance or discover more about conservation, rights of way maintenance, countryside furniture (gates and stiles) and more. We will provide the training, tools, gloves and refreshments! For those who volunteer regularly there may be an opportunity for additional advanced training in the use of power tools, wildlife ID and first aid. Local Heritage: The Pilot’s Bar St. Leonards Hotel was built in 1936 for Strongs of Romsey. The first proprietor, E.G. (Ted) Harvey, had served in the Army in WW1, then joined the White Star Line, eventually as Purser on the “Olympic”, sister ship to “Titanic”. Briefly transferred to the ex-German liner “Majestic” after Cunard took over White Star, he resigned. Having been at school with the brewery’s owner, Bob Chambers, he was offered the job of proprietor. Last month’s article told of the “Secret Army” centred on the Hotel, with Ted Harvey as leader. Among his team was the radio operator, an ATS Major, Betty, whose cover was barmaid. She was married to a sergeant, at the time serving in the Tank Corps. As yet one more “link” within the following story, local historian the late Ted Baker’s father George Baker was a member of this undercover group. The saloon bar was frequented by RAF and other pilots from Ibsley and Hurn airfields. Wishing to leave their mark in a variety of ways, it became a tradition for them to sign their names on its walls, which then became known as the Pilots Bar. Some famous aces are usually quoted, but the only one immediately recognised on the pillars is “Catseyes” Cunningham, but he appears under “BOAC”, probably for the secret airborne radar trials. 19 year old Pilot Officer David Glaser, said to be first to sign,
has not been found, but many of these pencilled signatures are now completely illegible. Apparently some did sign on the beam above the bar, but these were not preserved. A postwar photograph of David with Ted is on file. To ensure their readiness to respond within twenty minutes to a “shout”, a direct telephone line with Ibsley was eventually provided. It is said that Ted restricted their drinks to beer, no spirits; and they always left a payment on the bar in case they did not return. The photograph of the bar postwar, provided by Ted Baker, shows a number of Squadron badges. However, in the 1960s, the next proprietor Ron Sage had bought many more in London, significantly identifiable with a “Queen’s” crown. None of these badges or other memorabilia have survived. These pictures of the panels were taken by Ted Baker when we visited the Hotel on 1st August 2008. The original version of this article appears in a Meeting House file with some of the names

deciphered under Great Britain and BOAC. The panel with Betty’s portrait covers France, Great Britain, Belgique, New Zealand, Norge, Australia, Papua, USA, South America (Argentina) and Denmark, with Chindits below the portrait. Above Ted Harvey’s portrait are Nederland, South Africa, Bahamas, Polska, Russia, China, Cesko Slovaisko, BOAC (which, as well as flying boats from Poole, operated long distance flights from Hurn throughout the war, and was the predecessor to Heathrow 1945/6 before London airport opened),
Greece, Canada and titles but no signatures for Yugoslavia and Burma. The portraits of Betty and Ted have been said by some to have been by John le Mesurier, the “Dad’s Army” actor. They are far more likely to have been by Flight Lieutenant Gerald LeMesurier, an intelligence officer who served at Ibsley with 118 Squadron in those earlier days. Back in 2015, Pam Harvey-Richards had a framed cartoon, once in the bar, by local Jim Neum having a dig at a local resident, at the time head of BOAC at Hurn. In 1954, Ted Harvey renewed his link with Hurn, as chairman of Independent Air Travel, the first company to offer holiday flights to Majorca from the airport. Today the panels remain in situ, preserved on the two original pillars within the now open plan bar area, with a commemorative plaque recently provided by the latest owners of the Hotel on the right hand one. Keep your sink sparkling... As warmer weather approaches, our location is enviable. Our proximity to the historic beauty of the New Forest and the coast makes living in a hard water area a small price to pay. Nevertheless, it is a nuisance, and the mineral deposits from our water lead to a build-up of limescale that can wreak havoc on our homes, especially our kitchen appliances and sinks. As there is no better time than spring to rejuvenate your home, we would like to offer some advice to help banish this household pest. It can be tempting to use the all-singing-alldancing cleaning products available, and whilst these can leave chrome and stainless-steel gleaming, they can be detrimental in the long run. You’re best sticking to a mild acid, such as white vinegar or lemon juice. Cover the affected areas in either substance and leave to stand for at least one hour before washing away with water and rubbing stains with a sponge. For taps, soak a cloth in lemon juice and wrap it around so the neck stays immersed, then secure one half of the
squeezed lemon to the head (although this isn’t recommended for a plated tap, like gold.) Leave again for about an hour and wash away. If stains persist, you can use baking powder as a nonabrasive alternative to harsher cleaners. Vinegar can also be put through your appliances to treat the hidden, insidious effects of limescale that can affect their performance. Once your sink is back in shape, regular maintenance is key. Clean with warm soapy water and a sponge, then take a few seconds to wipe down your sink and tap after use to prevent stains. Our colleagues over at sink and tap specialist, Franke, also advise against the use of plastic washing up bowls, as these work to dull the surface of your sink over time. If, however, merely looking at your limescale afflicted sink is enough to fill you with dread, we are on hand, and offer a sink changeover service as a cost-effective option for breathing new life into your kitchen. Talking about Wildlife...
Helping the birds Many of us will have wanted to help our familiar garden birds by putting up nest boxes for them to use in the spring. We rightly love the sight of the blue tits and robins taking advantage of our help.
But beyond our gardens, out on our beautiful heaths, there are other birds which cannot be helped by putting up nest boxes. This is because their specialist lifestyle involves nesting on the ground amongst the heather and bracken. So, these birds need our help and thoughtfulness in another way. They very much need us to think constantly about not disturbing them as they keep vigil on their eggs or chicks when we go out on the heath. We, or our dogs, only have to stray a very short distance from a path for a rare woodlark or nightjar to be scared off its vulnerable nest - quite possibly causing the bird to fail to breed successfully. A failed year is very significant to such rare birds
which can only breed on this rare habitat which we are so lucky to have around us. This is why it is so important that we stick to the paths and keep our dogs on a lead from March, when the nesting season begins, right through the summer, when it ends. None of us would deliberately destroy the nest of a robin or blue tit, but it is terribly easy to unwittingly destroy the nest of a woodlark or nightjar just by leaving the paths or not keeping our dogs on a lead in the spring and summer. If we follow the ‘heathland code’ in this and other ways, we can both protect the special wildlife of the heath and enjoy its beauty to the full. New state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre for Meridien Modena Family-owned motoring business, Meridien Modena, has invested ÂŁ3.5 million in a new 14,000 sq ft, two floor, state-of-the-art Ferrari service centre, based near its showroom in Lyndhurst, Hampshire. Located on the Hounsdown Business Park, the Ferrari service centre provides an additional servicing facility enabling the Meridien Modena team to complete restorations, pioneering technical refurbishments, as well as routine scheduled servicing on Ferrari vehicles. Creating seven new jobs including two full-time apprentice technicians from September, Meridien Modena will have
in excess of 40 staff running the centre to ensure exceptional service is delivered to its nationwide customer base. With 13 service bays, scheduled service times will be dramatically reduced from a peak of six weeks to between three and five days. Two service bays will be dedicated to working on classic Ferrari’s which are more than 20 years old as Meridien Modena has officially been recognised by the Italian brand as one of only nine authorised Classiche workshops in the UK. The centre also includes a lounge for clients to relax and view the workshop through floor to ceiling glass. The centre has the capability to accommodate a total of 80 vehicles onsite, including a storage area to house 35 cars on the first floor. It has an array of the latest technology including lever-less tyre fitting equipment, integrated work tool stations delivering technicians with retractable oil, water, compressed air and power on demand to aid workshop efficiency. A large parts carousel system which will enable 3,000 parts to be stored, as well as high voltage special tooling to work on hybrid vehicles.

Durlston Court School Sponsor Schools Gardening Competition We are delighted to announce Durlston Court School are sponsoring our our Schools Gardening Competition in the Flower and Gardening Show at this year’s New Forest Show. We are keen to involve the younger generation in all aspects of the Show and to this end, we would like to invite local schools to take part in a gardening competition to be displayed within the Flower & Gardening Marquee in July. The competition involves a class or year group planting up two decorative window box planters with either flowering plants, decorative nonflowering plants, vegetables or salad plants. The plastic containers could also be decorated to add an attractive visual impact to the display. We would also encourage the children to keep a diary of how the planter grows and what actions they have taken, a group photo of the children involved could also be submitted and this would all be displayed alongside the exhibit within the marquee.

The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Birthdays! They are a great excuse to let your hair down, have a family gettogether or just simply spoil yourself in luxury for the day. Nellie, being somewhat advanced in years, has had many opportunities to try different ways to celebrate. This was my sister’s Birthday, May 10th. What I had never realised is that my own Birthday, being 22nd December, was always celebrated with family meals and parties to compensate the fact that it was so near Christmas. It was never to be forgotten. Sue’s Birthday however, in the wonderful month of May, had never been celebrated in the same way, except a party she had organised herself for her 40th. So, we were going to change this. Nellie was determined we would get together and do something for Sue we knew she would like. Of course, it had to be a surprise. Gary, Sue’s husband, told Nellie she wanted to go to Swanage on a boat. What a great idea! Mum and Dad (more correctly Dad) had been fishing at Docklow up North, had then travelled

Family birthday trip out on the Solent Scene to friends in Wales, and then made the journey all the way to the South for us all to be together. Dad is 83 and loves adventures… he gets on well with Nellie! Job done. We were all in the same town, so step one complete. It was a blustery day in Poole. Even the waves by the Quay were dancing around in excitement with little ‘white horses’ appearing and disappearing quickly. Nellie was nervous. If it was like that here in the shelter of the Quay, what would it be like out at sea? Mum, Dad, myself and Stephen were all positioned for the grand arrival of the Birthday Girl. Just in the distance we saw Gary and Sue arriving, little people slowly walking towards us. Once they were nearer I could see Sue’s grin. It was nearly as big as Nellie’s but not so silvery. She was happy. Gary however looked a little trepidacious. He was not sure if the boat would be sailing. Oh No! After all that planning would we be foiled by our everchanging English weather? Please no. Off Gary went to the kiosk while we all

29 waited with baited breath. He returned looking somewhat reassured, but not totally content. The boat would sail, but not all the way to Swanage, it would take us on a two-hour tour to Old Harry Rocks and back. We decided to go with it as we were all there and we love the water. Nellie was so glad we did. It was a bit rough, but that’s what we liked. Dad was now grinning from ear to ear and reminiscing about his days on the trawlers that his skipper father used to sail. Mum sat inside with a coffee, also smiling as we were enjoying ourselves so much. Sue did her Titanic impersonation at the very front of the boat and I nearly got soaked with a wave that splashed enthusiastically onto the deck. Soon after this the captain decided to turn around. Health and safety I am sure. Certainly, bouncing up and down on choppy waters is not everybody’s cup of tea, or should I say legs of sea? It was a great trip, well enjoyed. So now what better than to have a late breakfast in one the ‘Mediterranean style’ cafes overlooking the fantastic boats and yachts moored in Poole Harbour? It had to be done. After a delicious brekkie, we walked to the new Poole Pottery shop and had a potter round (forgive the pun…). Mum bought a couple of pressies and I bought some sweets. We had decided to drive to Norden and catch the train to Swanage, so the original plan would be fulfilled. Off we set. There is something magical and enticing about trains which is why I think they attract so much attention from photographers and train spotters. There are many along this train line. Going back in time on an old diesel
Coffee and cake... with a view we arrived in Swanage, having passed the wonderful Corfe Castle enroute. It was now time for coffee and cake of course (I really do not understand why I am putting weight on?) so we sat in a little café right on the front watching the dancing waters of Swanage Bay. Idyllic. It so happens that Sue’s present from the family this year was an amazing 19th Century Victorian locket that she had always wanted. Brian at Georgian Gems in Swanage had got it especially for me. Sue loves it. When I said she could put a photo in it she immediately said she would find one of her rabbit! Gary and I were not amused, although he did say he knows his place. Travelling back we got front seats on the Pullman! Wonderful large windows with fantastic views of the rolling countryside, the stone houses and of course the castle again. We were also presented with a short history of the carriage by the smartly dressed ticket collector. What more could you ask? The whole day was a huge success. So maybe now we can make May 10th a never to be missed excuse to go out and enjoy ourselves? Happy Birthday Sue. Where will Nellie take us next…? By Debbie Corney

Tastes so good... BBQ Grilled Aubergine Burger
A yummy vegetarian BBQ burger, perfect served with a side salad and a tzatziki dressing.
Ingredients for 4 servings Burgers 2 aubergines Lettuce leaves Sliced tomato 1 red onion 4 burger buns Cooking Oil Curry Marinade 75ml vegetable oil 1-2 tsp curry powder Juice of ½ a lime 2 cloves of garlic Salt & pepper
KITCHEN 1. Wash all the vegetables. Cut the aubergines into slices 1cm thick. Peel and slice the onion. 2. To make the curry marinade, mix the oil, lime juice and curry powder together into a paste, peel and crush the garlic and add to the mixture. 3. Brush the sliced aubergine with curry marinade and season both sides. BBQ: 1. Prepare to the BBQ to approx. 220c. 2.Cook the sliced aubergine for approx. 4 minutes on each side. 3.Split the buns and drizzle some oil on the inside and toast gently. 4.Serve the aubergine inside the warm toasted buns with lettuce, onion rings and tomato, with a dressing of your choice.

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation.

It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed.
Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.
