Local boy replicates channel swim to support local hospice charity A 10 year old boy from Poole is replicating swimming the English Channel by completing 2817 lengths of his pool at home to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice..
Fraser Burnet, a pupil at Dumpton School in Wimborne, decided during these difficult times to raise money to help others in need and wanted to honour the memory of his Daddy and Grandpa, who passed away two years and one year ago respectively. He has even managed a personal best of 140 lengths in one day.

The hospice is part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and is supported by Forest Holme Hospice Charity, who need to raise an additional £850,000 each year to help enhance the NHS provision at the hospice and ensure that Forest Holme is there for patients and their family and friends during the most difficult time of their lives.
So far Fraser has raised nearly £2,000, which is going to be generously match-funded by Teleost Cayman Ltd and Ancora Software. Fraser, said, “An enormous thank you to you all, it will keep me going on my long swim, which I estimate will take me just under two months to complete, if I average 50 lengths a day. Summer wildlife At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the li�le terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exci�ng displays are about to start… At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the �me of wri�ng, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roos�ng in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conserva�on Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls na�onally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plen�ful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nes�ng space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majes�c creatures. Over at Chesil, the li�le tern project is in full swing, with the first egg appearing on 20th May, nestled in the iconic pebbles of Chesil Beach. birds arrive in Dorset, migra�ng from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their con�nued survival and growing numbers. Li�le terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful li�le bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black �p. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their dis�nc�ve ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nes�ng birds, so the Chesil li�le tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protec�ng the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Founda�on Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing pla�orm to view these birds, who are hun�ng for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars! Heritage: The Numbers Game As I write we have just entered “lock down” in late March and are beset by everchanging statistics from around the world. As an allegedly “vulnerable” 89 year old, partial “isolation” has limited the frequency of my visits to the Meeting House, but the Heritage work must go on. I then noted a book on a shelf in my personal library about Censuses. Little expecting any immediate local link, the name John Rickman (17711840) immediately appeared, whose family had 18th century links with Christchurch. His 1800 magazine article on “ascertaining the population” was raised in Parliament by his MP, George Rose, which led to the 1800 Census Act. He was instrumental in carrying out the first four censuses 1801-1831. What follows is the result of snippets from that book and my own archives. Rickman’s picture is from Wikipedia. While obtaining a degree at Oxford, he adopted radical views, settled in London in 1792, then came down to Christchurch in 1797. In 1800 he returned to London, where classicist and social facilitator George Dyer (any relation to the Ringwood family?) found Rickman a job. “The Commercial and Agricultural Magazine” had launched in August 1799, but lacked adequate material. Rickman’s anonymous efforts improved matters, culminating in his June 1800 “short essay”, written in 1796 at Christchurch, titled “Thoughts on the Utility and Facility of Ascertaining the Population of England”. Given the length of the title, one must wonder how “short” the article itself was. The book suggests the first recorded censuses were those conducted by the Israelites c.2000BC, notably in a chapter named “Numbers”, suggesting later that the tribes could muster just over 600,000 men over the age of twenty. War and taxation
were primary reasons for counting adult males, such as St. Luke reporting Caesar Augustus’s decree that “all the world should be taxed”, with Mary and Joseph travelling 70 miles to Nazareth. Britain is unlikely to have escaped imperial Roman censuses, the word derived from censere, meaning to assess. Last month I wrote specifically about Christchurch in “Domesday”, William the Conqueror’s efforts to find out how much he might acquire from his new “kingdom”. Subsequently, parochial records were collected randomly for various reasons, but nobody gathered them all together as a single set of statistics until 1590. William Cecil, Queen Elizabeth’s Treasurer proposed a General Register Office be established, passing the buck to the Archbishop of Canterbury to organise it. 200 years passed before it was taken up. Meanwhile, in 1695 Scotland imposed a poll tax and Parliament did likewise in Ireland. The 1696 Window Tax demanded the name and address of each taxpayer in England and Wales.

15 London parish records following the arrival of Dutch gin with the reign of William and Mary led to concerns that the population in general was falling, the nation drinking itself to death. Unfortunately, simple comparison of births and deaths did not allow for immigration, much from the relatively healthy countryside. Attempts to start an annual survey in 1753 by a Thomas Potter received little support, arguments against including the “last remains of English liberty”, and exposing “information on manpower numbers to our enemies”. One MP threatened that if someone appeared at his home and persisted “I would order my servants to give him the discipline of the horse pond!” William Braikenbridge continued his assessments until his death in 1762 that, despite immigration, due to war and cirrhosis of the liver, like London, the entire population was falling. Others adopted the same view and converted it into fact. In 1798
a document by Thomas Malthus countered all these arguments with his views that indeed the population growth in the whole world would lead to a “permanent, semistarving underclass” and “ultimately a catastrophe of famine or plague or both”. Now where have we heard that one of late? Rickman reviewed his original draft, highlighting the variable numbers of active servicemen, fluctuating corn prices within an unquantified market, and guessed at 10 million people in England and Wales, and half as many in Scotland and Ireland. As the agricultural and industrial revolutions of his time transformed the country, and war with France persisted, he found a far more receptive audience than had others 50 years earlier. Our local Inclosure Awards 1807/11 and the forthcoming Tithe Awards of 1845/7, both available at the Meeting House, are useful records that demonstrate the situation at the time. Rickman assessed his 1811 returns to be more accurate than those of 1801, while those of 1821, war having ceased, such that “there remains no reason to suspect the least deficiency”. Sadly, most of the first four census returns were destroyed by Government order in 1904. Reminds me of a note about the early burial records for Ringwood’s Lower Meeting House. All those prior to about 1795 were destroyed in Victorian times, “because they were all dead!” They are not alone. The Irish papers have undergone several losses since 1922. Those for 1931 England and Wales were lost in a fire in 1942. Transcriptions of Ringwood’s censuses 1841 to 1891 can be studied at the Meeting House. After 2021 the decennial Census is under threat, suggesting reliance on other records. Windows 7 on my PC is no longer supported. What will happen to all these “other” records in the future. Understanding Investments:
The Value of Ongoing Investment Management If you own a money purchase pension, individually or via your employer, your money will be invested. If you own an investment ISA, your money will be invested. Do you know what it is invested in and how exposed your money is to investment risk? Has this been looked at and potentially adjusted since the start of 2020 (and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic)? Typically, we find people invest in a pension’s default fund when first setting up their plan and this rarely gets looked at again. Many newer schemes offer default funds with Lifestyling, which means risk is reduced automatically as someone approaches the scheme’s standard retirement age. That can work well if you plan to retire at the scheme’s retirement age AND an annuity is to be purchased. However, many clients are not so binary as to be working full time one day and stopping completely the next. Reducing investment risk too early could be damaging (especially after a severe market decline). Clients who invest in ISAs (other than cash ISAs) usually have a better understanding of where and with whom their money is invested but may only review this periodically (perhaps once a year at best). As we have recently seen, a lot can change in a year! Ongoing Investment Management is a way for your investments to be continually monitored on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Adjustments are made to maintain the correct level of risk within the portfolio and to take advantage of investment opportunities as they are identified. The foundation of investing is built on Asset Allocation. The concept is that different types of assets will go up and down at different times, so when one falls another rises and helps support the overall portfolio (picture a graphic equaliser). The 4 main asset classes are cash, fixed interest, equities and property
so these will be held in a “multiasset” portfolio in varying proportions Howard Goodship depending on the level of risk (and therefore volatility) a client is prepared to take, along with consideration of their investment timescale. The % held in each asset is then adjusted based on strategic asset allocation and tactical asset allocation. The strategic allocation tends to be based on long term views and the tactical allocation is generally implemented based on current market conditions. Is there a cost to this type of service? Costs vary considerably, although they may be lower than you might think. At Lonsdale Wealth Management we act as the “informed buyer” for our clients. We research and select the fund management providers who offer the best service at the lowest cost-we strive for value! Some passive providers charge very little extra (0.12% plus fund charges of 0.15%) for a mixed asset portfolio with ongoing strategic asset allocation (Source; Vanguard) and some active managers’ charges can be as low as an additional 0.24% above the individual fund charges (Source; LGT Vestra). Next month’s article will explain the difference between passive and active investment management. However you manage your money, it is important you give it the attention it deserves. If you don’t then you could be making your financial objectives harder to achieve than is necessary. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Oh, my goodness what incredible times we are living in! Daichi the Dashing Dude, our funloving campervan was driving us mad, instead of driving us off to exciting places to visit, for the last few months. I am sure you can only imagine how he felt when Boris said it was ok for him to go out on the road again! Wild horses wouldn’t stop him. In fact, that is where he took us… to see the wild ponies, horses and cattle in the New Forest. This area is so beautiful… the space, the greenery, the wildlife. Gorgeous. We packed Daichi with a healthy picnic and off we set. All smiles, including the Dashing Dude with his ‘bright white teeth’ all shining. It was a lovely day with the sun

ablaze. I think the horses were quite astounded at the amount of people walking around and disturbing the land that had become their own, and theirs alone, recently. I am sure a few looked at us in resentment as if to say, “Could you leave us to it please?” There were many foals too, all looking rather healthy, staying close to the safety of their mothers. Such a delight to watch. The expanding space of our very special New Forest is such an inspiration. The rolling countryside has a calming effect. Everything seems in control, tranquil and suddenly the stress of the news and the negativity falls away. Things do not seem so bad after all. Daichi highly recommends a therapeutic trip to the countryside to blow away any pessimistic doom and gloom.

Switching off the news on the TV is also a good idea. Dancing our way through the winding New Forest lanes we arrived at out destination, Lepe Beach. Now a different view of the wide expanse of sea and the Isle of Wight which seems so close. There was even an ice cream van! After weeks of being ‘locked up’ it is amazing what we can suddenly get very excited about. I have not felt like that since I was six and wanted an ice cream! It is the small things in life that make a difference and how we appreciate these even more now. Oh yes, and the toilets were open too! We were safe. How funny is that! A picnic in Daichi was a must. His little fridge comes in really handy and though we had prepared a flask of coffee this time, his whistling kettle will come in useful again very soon. So, there we were, the three of us, with a stunning sea view and good food.

The campervan-life really has its perks. We love it. Of course, we had to get out and sit on the sand and watch the rolling waves gently cruising towards us. There actually was a cruise ship moving out to sea, having been moored in Southampton harbour. I wonder where it was going? That is something else we miss… you can’t beat a good cruise. One day we will be back to some semblance of normality. I do not know when that will be, but in the meantime we have our wonderful Daichi The Dashing Dude who is delighted to ‘sail’ us away to wherever we want to go, or wherever he decides to take us. If you have any ideas where to visit, then we would love to hear from you. Family fun is what Daichi is all about. We do hope you are able to get out and about too. It is so good to do! Would you like to see your youngsters spending more me outdoors and get them ea ng healthy foods too? What be er idea than to involve the kids in growing their own?
While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realis c. Children can have short a en on spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your li le ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their a empts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing compe on, and wild flower seeds can just be sca ered and will, in me, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good sugges on radishes and salad leaves pop up in no me at all and should give them almost instant sa sfac on! Sweet young carrots are likely to
tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely li le cherry tomatoes. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusias c by having an a�ernoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot. Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing ac vi es too clean out the bo om half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with co on wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!
