St Ives School Pool Re-opens On Friday 24 May 2019 Barry Goringe, Dorset Councillor and Chairman of St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council, with Samara Stewart Chair of the St Ives School Association, officially opened the newly refurbished St Ives Primary School swimming pool. Over the last two years the swimming pool has undergone a full refurbishment. In 2017/2018 a small team of parents & grandparents completely renovated the changing room complex with huge support both monetary, skills and materials from local companies. In 2018 following a significant grant of £20,000 obtained from East Dorset District Council, funding from the Co-op Bransgore, the Mason’s John Langton Fund, Via Lucis Masonic Lodge No 8228, Woodford Lodge No 3903 and £7,000 raised by parents of the school a major re-lining of the tank of the pool and purchase and installation of two air heat source pumps, making the system more eco-friendly and sustainable. The pool was tiled, water inlets and outlets updated and the plant room pipework tested and updated to incorporate the new heating system. Bluewater Pools Ltd, Christchurch carried out the work in the period 19 Feb - 24 Apr 2019.
At the swimming pool opening event were a handful of ex parents and pupils who were involved in the original fundraising and running of the pool 40 years ago. Lauren Posser (nee Moriarty) the girl who originally opened the pool in June 1980 was also present and pleased to see the pool they built and ran is still being used and now has this new lease of life. Swimming is a life skill and the pool now with this refurbishment has another 40+ years of life in it providing a great facility for the children at St Ives Primary School and schools in the MATT including Three Legged Cross, Oakhurst, St Mary’s First School. Additionally, we are looking to open the pool to the community for Open Swims and Aqua aerobic sessions & intensive swim courses in conjunction with Swim schools. The pool relies on volunteers to run it (currently mainly parents) in order to make this facility more available to the community we are looking to a seasonal pool caretaker and other volunteers, if you know of anyone who might be able to help please ask them to contact Samara Stewart on SISAinfo@ stivespta.com

Local Heritage: ‘Tis Mine The two most frequent requests received as local historian concern either the records of an individual’s family within the area or the past history of their property. At the Meeting House we have considerable material to assist in tracing both these links for visitors and local residents, but this month members of Hampshire Genealogical Society are scheduled to be on site with their exhibition and computers on a daily basis from 8th to 20th July. Normally their representatives attend on the first Friday of each month. Individual property records depend very much on the availability of a set of “deeds”, where the information they hold can then be linked with the wider coverage offered within Enclosure and Tithe Awards, major estate records and sales documents; and details of individual residents in 19th century Censuses and various Directories. The deeds themselves will vary in the depth of information that they will contain, very much dependent on the extent of the “proof of title” required when the property or its site first existed. For many older properties in our parish this can extend for at least a hundred years, the larger ones far longer. For example, my timeline for Avon Cottage begins in the 13th century, while the history of St. Ives House has elements in the late 18th century. The original documents legally belong to the current owners of the property, but for various reasons they are left with a bank
or solicitor for safe keeping, or else held by a mortgagee. Seen here is the 1918 mortgage by Mr. J. Tanner for Ringwood’s Monmouth House, at the time still held under copyhold through Kings College Cambridge. In the past, when a freehold property changed hands, the solicitor would go to great trouble to produce an Abstract of Title, often for over 100 years, proving the validity of the vendor’s ownership for the purchaser. One set of these documents in my possession records the ownerships of Bickerley Mill and the present flats on site from the late 18th century until 1986. Once analysed and listed, they will be deposited at Hampshire Records Office in the name of the Meeting House. Several sets have been deposited there on behalf of individuals, where they can remain their family’s property, or be passed on to a new owner. Regrettably many collections of these interesting documents are lost. Banks and mortgagees should always offer to return them to the owners or the owners representatives when appropriate, but will then periodically have a clear out without doing so. This is particularly prevalent since the creation of the Land Registry, and likely to become even more so under recent proposals. Often the descendants or new owners express little interest in

15 the documents, satisfied that they have on record “proof” in the form of their Land Registry papers. The Land Registry has recently announced availability of title deeds via the internet. It is only a year or so ago that I dealt with a problem over their printed version for a potential purchaser of an early 20th century property on Braeside Road, whereby a Registry plan and some associated conditions implied their on-going responsibility for the drains provided in my home’s part of Malmesbury Road in the 1960s. Another element of disturbing regularity is house clearance after an owner’s death, where they end up in a skip. A significant local “rescue” occurred in 2011 when Tony White gave me the mass of material, seen here on my bed at the time, covering the lengthy naval career of Admiral Sir George Egerton, owner in retirement of Ringwood Manor House 1916-1940, together with correspondence, draft wills and photographs. It had presumably been found during the rescue of the derelict house in the 1980s, following the death in the 1970s of the Admiral’s son, Brian. Destined for a skip, the bulk of the actual documents, with my detailed report, are now at HRO Winchester, leaving just the correspondence to be dealt with.
In April 2018 a lengthy correspondence appeared in the Telegraph when the digital process was first announced. There was even this picture of a 4000 year old Sumerian pictographic tablet to demonstrate the lasting importance of such records. Examples appeared of the loss of individuals deeds under all the circumstances mentioned above, while a judge emphasised the fact that they are an owner’s property, and that they could sue; a bit late if the actual papers were already no more. The subject of “House Deeds” is covered in my Meeting House memorandum dated 12th April 2018, which includes copies of the majority of this correspondence. As a final cautionary tale, not long since a West Moors resident told me of a straight line boundary to their property according to their latest Land Registry property details, whereas the actual boundary with their neighbour has always, certainly in their day, been decidedly unstraight. They are still awaiting the promised revised version. It is usually said “Buyer beware”. It would appear that current owners should be equally suspicious of what any new style Land Registry version of their property may actually contain. John Hawkins

Explaining... Lasting Power of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document which legally enables one or more individuals you know and trust, your Attorneys, to have the Power to make decisions on your behalf if you lose Mental Capacity (capacity). Unlike a Will which deals with your estate when you are no longer here, an LPA deals with your Financial and Care decisions while you are alive but lack capacity. There are two types of LPA; a Property and Financial LPA, and a Health and Welfare LPA. Plan for the Future Contrary to beliefs like, “I would never need an LPA”, or “My next of kin will get the final say”, the reality is that everyone needs an LPA, regardless of age or current mental health status. A former Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice said in 2007 when LPA’s were first introduced, “We all know how important it is to plan for the future. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place should be as common and natural as making a Will”. Less than 1% of the adult UK population has an LPA. However, 1 in 3 persons on average over the age of 65 in the UK develop dementia (Alzheimer’s Society), and every 90 seconds someone in the UK, is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (Headway). Four reasons why you should make and register both types of LPA. 1. Choice. You retain the choice of who to appoint as your Attorney’s and how they should act. If you lose capacity without an LPA in place the Court of Protection will have to appoint a Court Deputy to make decisions on your behalf. There is no guarantee this would be someone you would want and could even be a stranger such as a professional listed on the court panel.
2. Costs. For the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputyship the initial application fee is £385 plus all legal fees and ongoing annual fees payable to the court. All of which can run into thousands of pounds. However, to register each LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is only £82. 3. Time. To register an LPA with the OPG currently takes 8/10 weeks. A Deputyship application is more time consuming and can take as long as 9 months or more at a time when you desperately need some immediate help. 4. Instructions. LPA’s allow you to specify any instructions you may have for your Attorney’s. These are legally binding and your Attorney’s must follow them. The earlier an LPA is created and registered the better With an LPA document in place, you have peace of mind and full estate planning control. You would have specifically selected your Attorney’s and given them authority to make Financial and Care decisions on your behalf. LPA’s allow you to choose any Replacement Attorney’s and even a professional Attorney (such as a Trust Corporation), in case your primary Attorney’s are unable or unwilling to act. Finally, if you lack capacity but your Property and Financial LPA is not registered, your Attorney’s would not be able to access your bank accounts to pay for expenses such as care home fees until after they validate your LPA when it is officially stamped and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. If you hold an account jointly with someone else they will find themselves unable to operate the account until an LPA or Deputyship order is produced to the bank.

Summer wildlife
At Dorset Wildlife Trust we know summer is here with the arrival of the little terns and the barn owl chicks. Some of nature’s most exciting displays are about to start… At Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve in Weymouth, the barn owls have already started to rear their chicks. At the time of writing, 5 of 7 eggs have hatched and under the careful watch of their parents, are thriving. Barn owls have been roosting in the box which is specially built into the Lorton Meadows Conservation Centre, since 2010. Last year, we had the most amount of chicks fledge ever (five!), and this year is already looking promising. All this is despite the decline of barn owls nationally. The Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve, which the barn owls hunt for voles and other prey on, seems to have plentiful food stocks. Lack of habitat and nesting space are the main challenges for barn owls, so it’s great that our nature reserve can provide both for these majestic creatures. Over at Chesil, the little tern project is in full swing, with the first egg appearing on 20th May, nestled in the iconic pebbles of Chesil Beach. birds arrive in Dorset, migrating from Africa for the summer, to breed on the beach, which is the South West’s only colony. Last year, they broke records with breeding numbers, and despite their numbers dropping to their lowest in 1997, careful management of the habitat by volunteers has ensured their continued survival and growing numbers. Little terns are the smallest of the UK terns and are a fast flying graceful little bird with a black cap on their head and a yellow bill with a black tip. You’ll hear them before you see them – with their distinctive ‘creeking’ call. They are ground nesting birds, so the Chesil little tern project, led by RSPB, concentrates on protecting the colony from predators and reducing disturbance. Before the birds arrive, an electric fence is put up around the colony, and a hide is constructed for the wardens and volunteers to monitor the birds 24 hours a day, and scare off any avian predators. The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre has a viewing platform to view these birds, who are hunting for fish in the fleet lagoon. Bring your binoculars! Understanding Investments: Trusts for Inheritance Tax Planning Inheritance Tax Planning can appear complicated and is often something which clients think about but never get around to acting on for fear of making the wrong decisions. But most clients fundamentally wish to avoid their beneficiaries (usually their family) having to pay tax on their demise. I outlined a simple way to approach planning in the last issue, with the starting point being a cash-flow projection of your future financial commitments and plans. This identifies any surplus income and capital which you are unlikely to need yourself, which you can therefore “gift” either outright or into a Trust. An outright gift is known as a PET (Potentially Exempt Transfer) and a gift into a Trust can be either a PET or a CLT (Chargeable Lifetime Transfer), depending on the type of Trust. Both fall outside your estate after 7 years but a CLT has additional tax implications to consider. Trusts can appear complicated so for this article I want to highlight the two most common types of Trust and how they could be used. I am happy to provide further details in person if required. Bare Trusts: The simplest form, with any assets treated for tax purposes as though they are owned outright by the beneficiary (other than where parental settlement rules apply). These are often used by Grandparents to put money aside for their Grandchildren as any investments can grow tax efficiently using the Grandchild’s personal tax allowances (every person at any age has personal tax allowances). The limitation is that the beneficiary can demand access to the investments at age 18, when they become the outright owner, so they aren’t usually suitable for very significant sums. The gift into the Trust is classed as a PET unless fully or partially covered by an exemption such as the £3000 per annum gift exemption. Discretionary Trusts: The most common form of Trust because of their flexibility. Whilst you can list beneficiaries, they are classed as “potential” beneficiaries, so they can be varied at any time. Because they are “potential”, the Trust assets belong to the Trust and not the beneficiaries, so this provides protection against family break-up, benefits and care home fees. Any payment into the Trust is a CLT, which means there is an initial tax charge if the payments exceed the Nil-Rate Band at the time (currently £325,000 per donor). The Trust assets are also taxed at the highest rate of tax (45% interest and
38.1% dividends, albeit there is a reduction on the first £1000 of tax). There can also be a periodic 10-year tax Howard Goodship charge or exit charge on the value of the Trust assets if they exceed the Nil-Rate Band at that time. Sounds complicated? They can be, but they can also be incredibly effective providing you use them correctly; for example, a couple could pay £500,000 into a discretionary trust and note their children and grandchildren as potential beneficiaries. There is no initial tax charge as the sum paid in is under the combined nil rate band of £650,000 and even allowing for investment growth, it is unlikely to incur the periodic tax charge in 10 years- time (if it did then you probably wouldn’t mind as it means the investments have done extremely well and the maximum tax charge is 6% on the growth above the nil rate band). Ongoing income and dividend tax can be mitigated by either paying the income out to none or basic rate tax paying beneficiaries. Alternatively, the funds can be invested in an Offshore bond which can grow tax-free (this could result in a tax charge later so the ability to “exit” the bond at a later date tax efficiently needs careful consideration and advice). There are many variations to these two common trusts. Absolute Trusts for sums which exceed £650,000 and Loan Trusts & Discounted Gift Trusts (DGTs) which can provide the settlor with an income during their lifetime. The starting point for any Inheritance Tax Planning is a discussion about what you are trying to achieve, and what is holding you back from acting. Once these two things are understood, it is easier to make the right decision with proper professional advice. We often work alongside Solicitors to ensure solutions are as effective as possible. The Dorset Publications Camper Van Oh, Daichi the Dashing Dude, our wonderful new Dorset Publications campervan was in full spirits this month and ever so excited to be taking us for our first full camping trip. Nellie, his Grandmother, had told him all about the New Forest Caravan and Motorhome Club Centenary Site in the New Forest. He could not wait. It was a rather good weekend too, so we did not have to worry about getting wet and cold. Well, that is for later… One of the main advantages of “Dash” is that he has a really nifty ‘lid’ in that it opens along the side of the van and not from front to back as Nellie’s roof lifted. This means there is a tent-like structure inside the van once the roof is fully opened. Not only can we stand up entirely inside, but Hayden, who is 15 and now taller than me, can not only lie down in the ‘upstairs bedroom’, but can also sit up and read too! This is a huge advantage for a teenager who likes his own space. We, the adults, can sit
We spy with our little eyes...
Daichi settles in for the night... ‘downstairs’ quite happily without needing the awning. For a short trip this is really useful. The Dashing Dude is big enough to take all of us with no squabbling. Bonus! Being a youngster and ever wanting fun, Daichi had brought the I-Spy books which were perfect for a campsite. “I-Spy Camping” and “I-Spy Vehicles of the Road” were a great entertainment. If you have never tried these, you can get them at any good book shop or online. They can keep children (and us adults…) occupied for hours. We walked around the campsite finding all sorts of different caravans, awnings, cars, trucks and bikes. Daichi was thrilled we had so much fun. The next day he had planned a Treasure Trail starting at Keyhaven near Milford on Sea. Now I am not a walker and Daichi knows that well, so he tricked me into doing a near seven-mile walk! Really, I could not believe it - seven miles! I have never done that before. The trick you see

29 is to keep me busy… busy looking for clues. One after the other this trail took us from Keyhaven amenity car park to Milford on Sea centre, to Shorefield Holiday Park (how many caravans?) and finally back along the coast! We did it, and boy was I glad to see the pub (now now…) and have a seat in the garden to enjoy lunch, even if it was a bit on the chilly side by then. A well-earned rest was had by all and Daichi was smiling from headlight to headlight, showing off his bright-white grill. As if that was not enough… the following day we went to the New Forest Aqua Park for a friend’s 50th Birthday Party! This watersports park happens to have 2 trampolines, monkey bars, flippers, slides, hurdles, springboard, rockers, rollers, an overhang climbing wall, a swing and a giant iceberg. Seriously, are we having a laugh? How old do you think I am? Well in fact all 12 friends, yours truly and another excepted, donned on wetsuits and off they went. Daichi was told he was too heavy and there were no wet suits big enough to fit his muscular, Herculean body.
Ready for action on (or in!) the water
There’s the answer... He just strutted his stuff and puffed out his wing mirrors in indignation. Men… After an hour of slip-sliding away, bouncing on air beds, climbing on wet slippery ropes and hauling themselves back onto the floating rafts, the gang came back all smiling (or was it grimacing?) and totally exhausted. It was a weekend full of highspirited activity (and it wasn’t just the wine). Daichi is proving to be quite an asset I have to say. He maybe a little too energetic for an over 50 mature lady… or maybe not. He may just keep me young at heart! Where will the Dashing Dude take us next - I wonder? By Debbie Corney

MasterChef winner to visit the New Forest and Hampshire County Show Jane Devonshire, winner of MasterChef UK 2016 will be making an appearance at the 2019 New Forest and Hampshire County Show which is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August. Jane will be cooking live at The Kitchen by Chewton Glen in the Local Produce Market on Wednesday 31st July at 1.30pm. Jane will be cooking with fresh locally sourced produce from across Hampshire. Visitors can meet Jane Devonshire after her demonstration at the Hampshire Fare stand in the Local Produce Market where she will be selling and signing copies of her new book ‘hassle free gluten free’. Since winning MasterChef in 2016, Jane Devonshire has taken the bull by the food horns and tested herself further by working with a number of top chefs including Marcus Wareing, Atul Kochhar, Jason Atherton, Michel Roux and Michael O’Hare at their restaurants. Since MasterChef’ inception, over 300 million viewers worldwide have tuned in to watch contestants transform their lives through a passion for cooking and the phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. Jane has presented at numerous food and drink shows around the UK, including the BBC Good Food Show. Her travels have taken her from Edinburgh to Brighton, in the course of which she has developed a love for presenting her recipes and chatting to people about food.
In addition to the live cooking demonstrations, The Local Produce Market will feature more than 50 tradestands selling locally produced products and produce. All tradestands are members of Hampshire Fare, New Forest Marque of Hampshire Farmers Markets. The Local Produce Market will also feature a food court where visitors can enjoy some locally produced food and drink. Sophie Stannett, Marketing Co-ordinator says “Jane is going to be a fantastic addition to the cooking demonstration theatre timetable this year. The Local Produce Market is a wonderful celebration of Hampshire’s finest local producers and is certainly a must see section of the Show” The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July & 1st August at New Park Brockenhurst. All tickets purchased online via the New Forest Show website before 23rd July will receive a 15% discount. This year all children aged 5-15 can enter the Show for just £1 with all proceeds from child ticket sales being donated to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary.
The Kitchen sponsored by Chewton Glen will also feature a busy timetable of cooking demonstrations from top local chefs each day including Matthew Whitfield from Montagu Arms, Beaulieu and James Durrant from Ideal Collection. On Your Plot Start them young
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder. Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into
the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too.

Tastes so good... Banana Loaf Cake
A delicious banana loaf that’s versatile enough to be served as breakfast, warm brunch or simply enjoyed with an afternoon cuppa.
Ingredients for 8 servings 4 medium sized ripe bananas 180g Whole Wheat flour 125ml Sunflower oil 125g Brown Sugar (amount can be adjusted to suit tastes) 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract ¼ tsp. Cinnamon Pinch of nutmeg powder (optional) 2 tbsp. sunflower seeds (optional) 1.5 tsp. Baking powder ½ tsp. Baking soda Pinch of salt
1. Preheat Oven to 180C. and lightly grease a loaf tin or rectangular cake
tin. 2. Add the sugar and bananas to a mixing bowl and mash well until pureed. 3. Add the oil, cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg to the bowl and stir well. 4. Into the bowl, sieve the flour with the baking powder, baking soda and salt. 5. Fold the dry ingredients carefully and evenly ensuring it is well blended. 6. Add sunflowers seeds if chosen and gently fold. 7. Tip the mixture into the greased pan and bake for 35-40 minutes or until risen and a golden brown colour. 8. Remove the loaf when cooled from pan, slice and serve warm or cold. 9. The loaf is best kept in a lidded container in the fridge or wrap in cling film.
