Heritage: Ashley & Folly Farm Cottage During 2019 a Mr. Warner, father of a long-term resident at the Sheiling, had decided to research the long-term history of this old farmhouse, his son having been moved into this building from one of the other residential care houses for disabled people on site. Adding his researches at the British Library, Hampshire and Public Records Offices to mine about the Sheiling and elsewhere within the Meeting House archives, including several documents from the 18th and 19th century, a more comprehensive history of the immediate Ashley area has emerged. My photograph of the now much extended farmhouse was taken in 2015. Additional nearby properties had later been incorporated in the complex, in part linked to the adjacent Waldorf School. Research into the area of the nearby brickyard, clay and gravel pits has also recently been reviewed, as a record of one of the older Hurn Road properties, April Cottage, for its latest owner. The first map, dated 1812, shows the south east corner of the Somerley estate. Recently purchased by Henry Baring, in the accompanying Sales Particulars one of the farms has a 4.5 acre field referred to as “Folly Ground”. The term generally means it is of poor quality for cultivation. No associated farm cottage appears on this plan, that being to the south of the
“Roman road” line that marks the southern boundary of this estate. The East/West road here leads to Holly Grove, site of many Victorian and later children’s holiday outings, while that going northwest is today’s Verwood Road. The second map is dated 1870, and shows the entire area between the Horton Road and the “Roman” line that will become the Shieling School in the 1950s.Two vast gravel pits can be seen each side of the Poole Road, no doubt initially created to surface the 1760s turnpike road. In the 1920s, William Webb bought gravel from the Earl of Malmesbury to improve Horton Road. Folly Farmhouse is just to the west of the northern one. A sandpit at the junction of Folly Farm Lane and the Poole Road, and a claypit behind cottages on the Hurn Road, undoubtedly provided materials for the brickworks.

This picture of “The Sheiling” house was taken when I attended their open day, an annual event, in June 2015. Previously, using the Brown’s Directories listings and elsewhere at the Meeting House, this property was built in 1906, potentially by a London based lawyer, R.C.R. Neville. His name later appears at an adjacent property, today called “The Studio”, between 1929 and 1954. ”West Mount” is of similar vintage, seen here on a c.1910 postcard. By 1908 a Mrs. Robinson is shown at “Ashley Heath”, by 1914 specifically at “The Sheiling”. By 1929, Sir Charles Grant Robinson is there, while Mrs. J.G. (his mother?) is then at “The Sheiling Bungalow” in 1932. This lady is no longer listed in 1940, but Sir Charles remains into the early 1950s. In the 1954 edition, “The Sheiling Curative School” appears under “R. Roth” in 1954 No records have been obtained from the School itself, but in June 2013 a centenary history 1906-2006 by a John Baum in Norway clarified its origins. He provided this early picture of “Watchmoor Cottage”, extended to provide more accommodation. His story tells of Mrs. Robinson’s grandson
Charles, born at “Sheiling House” in 1940, the second son of her daughter, Ursula Gleed. He was in some way disabled. PostWW2 help was sought of a care facility in Scotland, and in 1951 a similar facility was set up at “The Sheiling”. “Folly Farm School” was created in 1974 by Christine and Keir Polyblank, from whom more background information was obtained in 2013. This now operates from modern premises and additional homes under the name of “Ringwood Waldorf School.” One must exercise caution locally with the name “Folly Farm”, as a second one appears in the early 20th century, on Sandy Lane, St. Ives, roughly opposite the surviving house known as “The Knowle”. This too is on relatively poor heathland soil that persists throughout the Parish. It initially had links to a Mr. A.A.A. Liegaux of “Braeside”, a large house built in 1902 on an eight acre site within the Earl of Malmesbury’s “St. Leonards Estate” that survives today, eventually giving its name to Braeside Road. In the 1950s/60s bungalows were built on the site of that other Folly Farm. At the Meeting House three files in the Properties section cover “The Sheiling”. B25 Part 1, once a “History” “Education” file, contains the original research papers and associated parish material; Part 2, my Maps and Plans, plus Mr. Warner’s research material; and Part 3, all of the associated old document copies provided by Mr. Warner. Talking about Wildlife...
The secret world of the robin The much-loved robin is one of the UK’s favourite garden visitors. Adorning Christmas cards at this �me of year, the robin is a truly iconic species, o�en associated with winter. Perhaps the best thing about the robin is that it’s easily iden�fied; brown with a white belly and the famous red breast make it unmistakable, even for the wildlife novice. O�en seen using gardens and local green spaces, they make their presence known with a loud, territorial song that they sing all year round, so they’re hard to miss. Whilst they can be found in the most unusual places such as plant pots, old wellies and shelves, shrubs and par�cularly ivy (another fes�ve favourite!) are their favoured place for nes�ng. Fiercely territorial birds, during the breeding season (April to June) the female is allowed into the male’s territory where she sets up a nest of dead leaves, moss and hair. Like any other garden visitor, robins need a helping hand during the winter as they can be adversely affected by cold snaps. Robins are small, and smaller birds can o�en suffer the most in colder condi�ons. O�en if a robin visits your garden just once, they are known to return �me and �me again. Finding food is a constant occupa�on for them, and whilst Ivy provides rich delicious berries, robins will appreciate any offerings you have for them in your garden as the winter draws in. They are ground feeders, so try to provide food for them on a table as they will struggle to use hanging feeders. By encouraging robins (or other birds) into your garden, you will be rewarded with a display of red plumage and beau�ful bird

Understanding Investments: Financial New Year Resolutions With the arrival of the New Year, and ahead of the end of the tax year in April, many people take these next three months to review and consider their financial affairs. As any regular reader knows, I usually like to explain one topic more fully in my monthly article but on this occasion, I have provided some key questions and top tips to consider during the coming few months. 1. Do I have a financial plan to meet my goals? Everyone’s goals are different but many of my clients want to know whether they can afford to retire or understand how much they can afford to give away to their family to reduce inheritance tax. Whatever your objective, having a plan offers you both peace of mind and more security, resulting in a greater likelihood of taking action. 2. What level of risk am I currently taking with my savings and investments? Many clients own investment ISAs but may not fully understand what their ISAs are invested in. This is especially common with pension funds when a default fund is often “chosen” by…..default. Investment conditions have been favourable for a number of years but that won’t always be the case, so understanding whether you are taking the appropriate level of risk is critical to a successful outcome. 3. How much am I paying in fees/charges? This question applies to both fees charged by the investment manager and financial adviser, as you are likely to be paying both. If you own older investment products (pre 2012) these fees may be rolled into one. How much you are paying comes straight off your returns, so it is an important figure to understand. 4. Am I utilising any tax allowances and exemptions? Tax is another form of charge. We all have to pay our fair share of taxes but why pay more than you need when there are established, allowable exemptions available? For example, each individual
has a £20,000 ISA allowance, £40,000 pension annual allowance (that can be tapered back to Howard Goodship £10,000 for high earners but it’s also possible to carry-forward unused allowance from the past 3 years). A CGT annual exemption of £12,000, £2,000 dividend allowance, up to £1,000 personal savings allowance and the 10% marriage allowance if eligible. From an IHT perspective further allowances are available; annual gift exemptions & gifting of surplus regular income. Finally, understanding and utilising Chargeable Lifetime Transfers and Potentially Exempt Transfers is critical to successful Inheritance tax mitigation. Of course, tax rules can change (I have written this with an election approaching) but doing nothing is no plan at all. At Lonsdale Wealth Management, Stewart and I love helping people! Road Safety: What to teach and age-appropriate messages Brake recommends you aim to cover the road safety ABC, adapted for the age group you’re working with, as set out below: A is for awareness (traffic is dangerous and can hurt people) B is for behaviour (things you should do to stay safer) C is for choice and campaigning (how to make safer choices and to help others make these choices too) Under 8’s can be taught A and B from the age of two upwards. They can be taught rules and encouraged to follow them through practical training. However, under 8’s should not use roads without an adult, and adults should follow the Green Cross Code (see below) at all times when on foot with their children. Adults should, at all times, hold children’s hands or use reins with younger children because under 8’s: • have difficulty judging speed and distance; - are easily distracted and act on impulse; • have difficulty understanding danger and death and are oriented around play; • are small (so can’t see hazards) and are still developing eyesight and hearing; • are carefree, not careless; • should not be allowed to walk near roads on their own for these reasons.
Over 8’s will have more ability to understand C, and make their own choices based on different options and assessment of risk. However, they need to have A and B reemphasised to them because over 8’s may walk on their own but make mistakes that can cost their lives because of lack of experience; are vulnerable to peer pressure from other children to make risky choices, such as running across a road. A is for awareness: traffic is dangerous and hurts people You can teach, with increasing frankness as children get older, that: Traffic hurts tens of thousands of people in the UK each year. Five people are killed in road crashes every day. People hurt by traffic are often killed and seriously injured. Injuries include paralysis and losing limbs. (Note: many children may think minor injuries such as breaking an arm are okay or even fun – you may need to make clear how awful a serious injury is.) Some people do dangerous things when walking or cycling, such as texting on their phone while crossing a road. These people are more likely to be killed or hurt. Some drivers do dangerous things, which increase the chance of them killing or hurting themselves or someone else, for example, speeding, or using a phone at the

29 wheel, or driving after drinking alcohol. We have laws such as speed limits to stop people being killed or hurt in crashes, but some drivers break them. B is for behaviour: rules you can follow to stay safe Children need to be taught the language of road safety before they can understand the rules. For example, names of vehicles, names of street furniture such as pavements and kerbs, and an understanding of fast, slow, looking, listening and crossing. Download Brake’s colour in work sheet with key words and street furniture. A welleducated child age five may already have a grasp of fundamental road safety rules thanks to their parents. But others may not. Therefore, you should begin with younger children by checking they all understand the following: • Paths and pavements are for people; roads are for traffic. • Never go out near roads without a grown up. Hold their hand and don’t let go. • Stop at once if you are told. Never try to cross a road until you are told. • Don’t run into the road or play on roads - play in a park or garden. • You can help grown-ups look and listen for traffic to cross safely. • Traffic lights and other crossings help people cross the road. When a red man appears, it means you must stop.If you ride in a car, never undo your belt, play with door handles, or distract the driver.
C is for choice: how to make the safest choices and help others stay safe too Under-8’s are potentially ill-equipped to make their own choices. However, it is important that older children recognise their ability to make safe choices, recognise pressures they may come under to make dangerous choices and learn how to resist those pressures, and how to speak up for the safety of others too. Younger children can also be encouraged to think about choices, as long as they are not encouraged to make those choices on their own. All children can be encouraged to speak out against dangerous behaviour, such as children pushing each other into the road, or running across roads without looking, or drivers driving too fast, or people not doing up their seat belts or not wearing helmets on mopeds or motorbikes. On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

• Plan your crops • Protect crops against the cold and from pests such as pigeons • Sew le�uces indoors • Start rhubarb crowns Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect �me to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that s�ll leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentra�ng on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use pa�o containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great �me of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the be�er and higher beds will mean less bending when you are plan�ng out seedlings, harves�ng or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awai�ng planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plas�c, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops s�ll growing, such as purple sprou�ng broccoli, will benefit from protec�on against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few le�uces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free condi�ons such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before plan�ng. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for star�ng �ny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disrup�on as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.

ROASTED ACORN SQUASH Ingredients for 4 servings: 1 large acorn squash ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 cloves garlic (minced) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ tsp mustard powder ¼ tsp onion powder 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter ½ red onion 1 tbsp olive oil 2 oz (60 g) soft goats cheese Small handful fresh mint Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F/200c 2. Cut the squash into 6 wedges leaving the skin on. Remove the seeds and place onto a baking sheet skin side down with the flesh facing up. Drizzle the wedges with olive oil and add the butter then sprinkle over the paprika, garlic, mustard and onion powder and season well. 3. Cover the tray with foil and make sure that it is pressed down well so that the wedges are sealed in. Place the tray into the oven to bake for 45 minutes; they will actually be steaming in their own juices at this point. 4. Meanwhile slice the onion and place into a frying pan with the olive oil, gently sauté the onion slices on a medium low heat until they are caramelized, set to one side. 5. After 45 minutes of cooking remove the squash from the oven and remove the foil cover, place back into the oven for 10 minutes to roast, after ten minutes top each wedge with caramelized onions and some crumbled goats cheese and place back into the oven for a further 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving plate, sprinkle with freshly chopped mint and serve.
