Community Transport to Ringwood During the Summer we were most concerned to hear about the effects of the withdrawal of the School bus subsidy on the only bus service which serves the Parish, the 38 More Bus. The withdrawal of the subsidy was due to the cut backs in budget undertaken by the County Council as a result of the Government austerity measures. We were fortunate that after considerable negotiations by our County Councillor and County Council Officers, that Southbourne Coaches stepped up with a new service which enables the school children to get to school. Although this has helped we were mindful that it only goes part of the way to resolve the problems of many of our residents. We have also been trying to get the bus company in to talk to residents, but to date have been unsuccessful.

The cost at present is £1.70 return but you do need to be able to shop unaided. This service has been running for over 20 years but it only works by passengers using it weekly. Ringwood & District Old People’s Welfare, cover the cost of the Shopping trips and the Greyfriars Community Centre owns and runs the Minibuses, so the fare goes directly to OPW. Bus passes cannot be used as it is a private service. Each minibus has a volunteer driver and volunteer escort to assist you and because it is going door to door it can take a bit longer than a normal bus service. For many the service also provides vital social interaction which is so important for those who now live alone.
The Parish Council has looked into a community transport scheme but this is very costly and it is also difficult to determine the best way of meeting the greatest need. We have also investigated alternatives. For many years the Parish Council has awarded a small grant to Greyfriars Community Centre. The grant has been specifically for running costs for the Greyfriars Minibus Shopping Trips. Mindful of the cuts to the 38 route, the Parish Council has agreed to increase the grant for the Greyfriars service in the hope that more of its residents will make use of it.

For many elderly people just getting into Ringwood for their shopping can be difficult and challenging. This service requires being booked on a permanent basis and has to be paid for even if the passenger doesn’t go, as the seat is theirs every week. Passengers are picked up from their homes in the minibus and then dropped at the rear of Sainsburys in Ringwood. Passengers can then shop, bank

Local Heritage: Avon Castle The name Avon Castle suggests the existence of some ancient fortification, but the building itself was not built until 1875-1878. An Avon Cottage appears on Milne’s 1791 map of Hampshire, with the name “Drummond Esquire” as its owner. Documents show the family to have been major landowners, with a Robert Drummond at Cadland Park, near today’s Fawley refinery. A “Fishing Lodge” was built for him on the Avon site, the actual design as seen here, with an Andrew Berkeley Drummond in residence in 1804. Usually, the first names that come to mind with the castle are the Earls of Egmont, but they did not arrive until 1913, a date commemorated by a large tablet on the garage section of the stables at the southern end of the Drive. However, given some remote connection via the Earldom as Percivalls, a Samuel Percivall was leasing a cottage with 3½ acres of meadow to a John Cobb as early as 1699. During the 18th century several “local” names such as Willis, Lyne, Jennings and Matcham held lands in the vicinity. In 1795 a James Harris inherited Hurn (or Heron) Court, and became the first Earl of
Malmesbury in 1800. He began acquiring much of the area, although his son, Viscount FitzHarris, seems to have been the motivator. A Villiers Dent became tenant of the cottage around 1830, and assumed responsibility for farming and managing most of the estate. This included extending the cottage/lodge into a “cottage ornée”, its footprint eventually equal to that of the castle today. Together with an estate of 1450 acres, the cottage and several farms were placed on the market in 1858. In this engraving, the lodge appears on the right, with the later extensions to the left. A copy of the sale particulars at the Meeting House describes all the buildings in detail, and part of an accompanying plan includes another view of the main building. By 1861 a John Turner-Turner was in residence with his wife, son and daughter. In 1863 he purchased the cottage and 863 acres for £14,300. Four years later he added the 264 acres of Westover Farm for £10,300. By 1870 a theatre, gas works, forge and a chapel had appeared, and the railway was built through the estate, to

open in 1862. Despite many tales, there was never any right to have a train stop at Avon Halt. An attempt to challenge this by JTT1 failed at court, although the decision was not actually made until just after JTT1 died, aged 40, in 1874. I refer to him above as JTT1, as his son had similar initials, who thus, to the late Ted Baker and me, became JTT2. Plans must have been afoot to replace the cottage with the castle, but, with the son aged 17, it must have been the widow, Dora, who saw it through. In 1878, at age 21, JTT2 inherited the estate, and his sister was married in the chapel. JTT2 became a local JP, was married in London the following year, but was having to take out loans. The estate was dedicated to sporting activities, such as shooting, hunting and fishing. He took his wife to America on two hunting trips, but then had to lease out the castle to bring in some funds. From 1886 to 1888 the pair lived and worked as trappers in the Canadian Rockies. All three trips resulted in a book, in which this studio picture appears. In 1900 JTT2 moved to the Beaulieu area, and the entire estate was placed on the market. Most was taken up by a Colonel Peacock, an engineer with railway connections from the North West, who seems to have done a great deal to repair the years of neglect. He sold on to the 9th Earl of Egmont in 1913. This earldom has a distinct lack of direct heirs throughout its history, and this was once again the case. Eventually the so-called future “Rancher Earl” was traced in Canada mid1920s, to inherit in 1929, impoverished by death duties. His young son became
the 11th Earl in 1932, was shipped off back to Canada, where he became a successful farmer in his own right. Delays in establishing his inheritance deferred the sale of the estate until November 1938. This picture comes from the sales particulars at the time. Since then, there have been a series of sales of parts of the estate, major and individual developers, while the amount of land associated with the Castle has steadily reduced, down to less than the original 4 acres under Cobb. There are tales of it having been a hotel in the past. It genuinely was a private one for sporting activities under JTT2 late 1890s, but any suggestion about the late 1940s only has it as a restaurant. By 1949 it had been converted into flats. Residents could purchase on long leases by the 1960s. A residents’ association has recently been formed to take on some urgent repairs. Talking about Wildlife...
Keep Dorset blue... 14 million people tuned into the first episode of Blue Planet II, making it the most watched television show in 2017, enthralling the public with tales from the ‘big blue’ ocean. Marine wildlife is often hard to appreciate as we can’t always see it, but this programme has given us all a new understanding of the complex and beautiful habitats and marine species living beneath the waves. Another much talked about issue it focussed on, was that of marine litter, one of the biggest threats to marine animals. It is estimated that around the world 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles are killed each year as a result of litter. Dorset is home to a great variety of marine life, with regular visits from grey seals, semiresident dolphins and even passing basking sharks, but the amount of litter found in our seas has turned the ocean into a very dangerous place for them. Our seas and beaches are awash with plastic toys, food packaging, lighters, balloons and fishing paraphernalia, which often takes years to decompose. Seabirds for example, might spot something shiny and think its food, which if eaten becomes impacted in
their stomachs and can cause death. Larger marine animals can also risk ingestion and entanglement from litter. The good news is that everyone can make a difference by making a few small changes. Reducing single use plastics is one big step in the right direction. In the recent budget announcements, a tax on takeaway boxes is being considered to reduce the amount of single-use plastic which could end up in the sea. Many of us could start doing something about it now by making different purchasing decisions – for example using a re-fillable water bottle rather than a single-use plastic bottle. Even if you have just two minutes, take a stroll along the beach and pick up some litter as you go, as part of the #twominutebeachclean. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van January - notorious for looking back… then looking forward to the new year ahead of us. Nellie, our delightful Dorset Publications campervan, loves to see what she achieved in the months gone by and then start to plan for the future. Her purpose as we know, with her rather large thighs, big silvery grin and roaring energy is to create family fun. So where did she take us last year? Well it all started at Monkey World! On a freezing winter morning Nellie had this terrific idea to visit the playful primates in the Purbecks. What a wonderful time we had, though we did not stay all day due to the very low temperatures and flurries of snow. I was doing the driving (“all by my own”, as Hayden used to say when he was very young…) and Nellie’s snow-mode was a great help to say the least! Very brave of me, and Nellie was rather proud. Monkey World is a great place to visit for the young and old alike, so ideal for the generations to have some special time together. Our next trip was to The Wimborne Town Football Club! Nellie picked a wonderful sunny, if a little cold day for this, and what an exciting day it was. Sport is so important for many reasons. Yes, it keeps us fit (Nellie could learn from that) and healthy, but even more important is the

Nellie adopts an Orangutan at Monkey World! community atmosphere. Local Clubs are run by dedicated individuals who spend their own time and money to help local residents have fun. There are many good people on this planet of ours. Wimborne Town Football Club, otherwise known as “The Magpies”, is no exception and Nellie tooted her horn as the Magpies came to a victorious 2-0 win. It was all about history at Stonehenge. Nellie was blown away by that trip. Well actually she was sincerely hoping she wouldn’t be taken away by aliens, or men in long flowing robes. Her imagination ran riot! These henges (prehistoric monuments consisting of a circle of stone or wooden uprights) are well known in the Wiltshire area, drawing visitors from all over the world and are truly inspiring. ‘Us English’ love our ancestry and our historic monuments. Nothing delights us more than looking back in time and imagining how things were. The museum was fascinating too with its ancient skeletons and Neolithic pots. A great day enjoyed by all. Variety is the spice of life and Nellie loves new experiences so fishing with Grandad was a real treat. All packed up with coffee, tea, sandwiches, crisps, biscuits and

27 maggots (for the fish of course!) and off we skipped to Hordle Lakes in the New Forest. Me, Nellie and Grandma were the servants for the day, providing the cuppas, burgers and generally helping wherever needed. The men caught loads of fish, so much so that Nellie learned how to “mug” the fish by literally dropping maggots into their mouths. Not for everyone but Grandad, Hayden and Nellie were all smiles! Our next adventure was unfortunately not with Nellie as she is too fat to fly. Those heavy thighs you know. Disney in Florida was amazing. The new Avatar ride at Animal Kingdom was spectacular and one Nellie would have loved. We really enjoyed showing her all the photos… I am sure she didn’t get fed up of hearing all about it. I bet you have never had that experience? Camping! Nellie loves camping. On our next trip we defied the weather and Nellie took us to Norden Farm near Corfe Castle in the Purbecks. Despite the summers’ torrential rains that had fallen, we enjoyed ourselves, fishing in the small lake, dining out, playing snakes and ladders in the awning, walks around the castle and generally being British. Bacon sandwiches for breakfast, raincoats on and smiles all round. Norden Farm is a great place to stay. More camping in Cornwall with an exciting excursion to Treamble Valley where Hayden competed in the National Surf Life Saving Competition, this time in the Youth Group and much more of a challenge for him. Nellie
Nellie at Rockley Park!
Nellie learns to fish at Hordle Lakes! held on tight to her skirts as she watched the competitors fighting against the tide and those crashing waves. From Cornwall in the South, to Hull in the North for a family wedding! Nellie was packed with wellies and wedding outfits. She certainly loves to travel. Not long after that was a visit to the Centenary Caravan Club in the New Forest which was a more leisurely end to a rather hectic time. The beautiful English sunshine did us proud and sunbathing was on the menu. Relief. Nellie’s engine purred. After all that running around and exhilaration Nellie persuaded Grandma and Grandad to buy a family caravan on Rockley Park. Nellie is delighted. She can visit, watch Hayden swim in the sea, Grandma and Grandad can stay whenever they want and we can relax on the decking with a cuppa. Result. Nellie ended the year presenting awards to the very talented Horticultural Society winners and then finally she met Father Christmas at the fete! What a wonderful year she has had. Nellie is planning another year of excitement for us. She is getting on a bit now (aren’t we all…) being well over 200,000 km, but is still very young at heart and is determined to enjoy herself despite any aches and pains. Life for Nellie is for living to the full. She would like to wish you a really Happy New Year. May you smile lots in 2018! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Planning veg for the year ahead If you’re new to veggie growing then this is the ideal time to start planning for the year ahead. Think about what space you have available for your crops and plan what you would like to grow and where.

Gardening may be the last thing on your mind in the cold weather but this is the perfect time to plan what to grow and where this season. It’s easy to get carried away when looking at catalogues or impressive displays of seed packets - but remember that it only makes sense to grow what you are likely to eat! If that still leaves you with a list that exceeds the space available then it may be wise to trim back on crops that take up a lot of space or are easily and cheaply available from local sources (potatoes perhaps?). Think about concentrating on plants that will crop quickly allowing the space to be used again. Remember also that you can use patio containers and grow bags to add extra growing space. Once you have your list split your available space into 3 (or 4) areas and then group your crops together by family so that they can be rotated around the areas in a 3 or 4 year cycle. Group the cabbage family together, then the onion family along with the pea and bean family, and finally potatoes, tomatoes and the carrot family. This is a great time of year to seriously consider making some raised beds, if you don’t already have them. Make sure that they are not too wide for you to easily reach the middle from either side and that there is sufficient room
for easy access all the way around. The deeper you can make them the better and higher beds will mean less bending when you are planting out seedlings, harvesting or weeding. If you have large areas of bare soil, awaiting planting, then you may like to think about covering them with black plastic, or cardboard, to protect the soil against the harsh January weather. Crops still growing, such as purple sprouting broccoli, will benefit from protection against hungry pigeons - try covering with wire mesh, fleece, or some homemade bird scarers (try stringing up some old CD’s). For those who are keen to get sowing, you can try a few lettuces. Start off on a bright, sunny windowsill, thinning down when they are large enough to handle. Grow on in frost free conditions such as a shed, or polytonal before finishing off under cloches. If you haven’t already planted shallots then it’s not too late to think about it, but don’t put them in when the ground is too wet or they may rot. Start saving empty egg boxes ready to chit your seed potatoes before planting. Just pop them into the egg boxes, sprout end up in a cool but frost free place and wait for the shoots to appear. You’ll also find the boxes useful for starting tiny seedlings off in months to come as they grow they can be planted straight out with no disruption as the box will simply rot down. And finally, if you have space, you may like to think about starting off some new rhubarb crowns towards the end of January.
