Dear St Leonards, St Ives, Ashley Heath & Avon Castle, I wonder if the cold weather which we have been promised will be here by the time you read this? To date we have been really lucky with the mild climate. Certainly, on New Year’s Day, which seems oh so far away now, we had a wonderful stroll at Durdle Door and then a walk back in time at Tyneham Village, all in bright sunshine and very mild temperatures for the time of year. You can read all about it in this month’s issue of your magazine. I do think it is important to get out in the fresh air when we can. How are you doing with your plans for 2019? We booked our holiday last week, which is very exciting. Hayden is going skiing with school in Italy, something none of us have done before, so I am sure he will really enjoy that. He is also busy with his Duke of Edinburgh Award, doing some volunteering work and has joined a running club with his friend. I wish I was that energetic! All in all, we have had a pretty good start to 2019. How about you? Don’t forget that if you need help with the house; renovations, plumbing problems, electric issues, decorating badly needing doing, the garden is unsightly, the trees have taken over, then the local trades people inside your little magazine are here for you. Heritage: The Other Railway When Castleman’s so-called “Corkscrew” opened to traffic in June 1847, one must appreciate that Bournemouth at the time was a relatively small town, reliant on horse buses and coaches to connect with this new form of transport. However, by the mid1850s Christchurch had developed into a market town, and Bournemouth was developing rapidly. Trade for stagecoaches rapidly shrank, although one, “The Avon” (originally Southampton to Poole) began a service linking Holmsley (initially Christchurch Road) with Salisbury. A separate coach met the four trains that called each day to take travellers to and from Christchurch and Bournemouth. At Poole a similar connection was provided from the station at Hamworthy, access hampered by a privately owned toll bridge. At a well-attended meeting in September 1856 it was proposed that a railway be built down the Avon valley from Ringwood. For an estimated cost of £100,000 for an 11½ mile double track laid as a single line, the proposal was well supported by several local men of influence. The promotors withdrew the Bill in June 1857, partially due to lack of financial support. In October 1858, Captain Moorsom, engineer for Castleman’s line, had offered an alternative routing that minimised earthworks at a cost of £45,000, just £10,000 of which would have to be financed locally. The Act for the Ringwood, Christchurch and Bournemouth Railway (RCBR) received Royal Assent on 8th August 1859. Land was acquired from Lord Malmesbury and
others, plus several areas of common land, and earthworks began in April 1860. Problems arose concerning the junction at Ringwood, eventually resolved by providing a third track alongside the recently doubled LSWR line across the Avon causeways, into a third platform at Ringwood station. There was an engine shed at the Christchurch terminus, a station at “Herne”, and a halt where the line crossed the road leading to Avon Cottage. Initially arrangements were in place for the estate residents to have the train stop at the halt, but these did not apply to through coaches to London by LSWR that began in 1872, as then owner of the estate since 1862, John Turner-Turner (1), would have learned had he not died before his claim was eventually turned down at court in February 1874. Various financial measures had to be taken by the board to cope with funding, including initiating

proceedings against those defaulting on their stage payments for shares. On occasion, both Moorsom and the contractors, Brassie and Ogilvie, received shares in payment, the latter to the value of £35,000. The 7¼ mile line opened on 13th November 1862, having cost £50,383, providing initially a daily service of just three trains each way, all arrivals and departures connecting with a horse bus service from Bournemouth. The steep gradients, some as severe as 1 in 80 or 1 in 66, and relatively tight curves of parts of the line restricted speed at times to just 15 or 25mph. Extension of the line into Bournemouth did not start until 1866, and then only as a platform, a simple shed for shelter and one small siding, all on the eastern side of Holdenhurst Road. This work was also undertaken by Brassey and Ogilvie. By October, lack of investment and delays providing a bridge across the Stour saw proposals to sell the line to the LSWR, but work was eventually completed and the line opened on 14th March 1870. Despite its arrival, it had been banished to the outskirts amidst concerns that hordes of visitors would be the result. Late 1872 the LSWR, concerned at the Poole and Bournemouth Railway under construction to the west, made a formal approach to purchase the RCBR as from 1st January 1874. It had survived thanks to Brassey and Ogilvie taking shares in payment, who now made a healthy profit. The success of the RCBR line was short lived. Amidst a mass of competitive bids for lines to link the areas served by LSWR with the Midlands, plans were already afoot to provide a direct link between Brockenhurst and Christchurch via Sway, eventually completed in 1888. The need for the RCBR steadily declined, post
WW1 challenged by the development of motor bus and coach travel, until it was eventually closed in November 1935 and the track removed soon after. As the Ashley and Avon Castle areas were developed post-WW2, many of the northern parts of the track became absorbed in new gardens, while a long straight section became part of the Spur Road, built in the late-1960s. Hurn Station survives as a hotel/restaurant, while Avon Halt is somewhat extended as a private residence, but still has a section of the platform in the garden. The pictures of stations are all original scans for the section of my 2010 exhibition dedicated to the RCBR. From left to right they are Avon Halt (1960s); Avon Causeway (1980s, ex Hurn); Old Christchurch Station (1963); and Bournemouth Central (c.1903). Sources, in addition to my personal archives, include Brian Jackson’s 2007 book about all the local railways in the 19th century (a second volume covers the 20th C.); and J.A. Understanding Investments: Tax Efficient Investment Income
There comes a point in life when people shift from saving for the future to drawing an income from those savings. This usually coincides with reducing working hours or retirement, and it is really important your savings and investments are fit for this new purpose. By utilising tax allowances, an individual could generate a tax- free income in the tax year 2019/2020 of £27500 per annum! In addition, any further income generated from ISAs would also be tax free.
the personal tax free allowance, currently £11850 but rising to £12500 on 6th April 2019. In certain Howard Goodship circumstances, married couples and those in civil partnerships can transfer 10% of their personal allowance to their partner.
Pensions and Annuities will likely form a significant part of your plans, but I will cover these separately in their own article. For now, I will offer some time-tested strategies to generate a healthy level of current income from liquid savings and investments, which also offers the ability to rise with inflation (there are few guarantees in the investment world, but inflation is an event that almost always occurs).
Equity Income Funds: These can be UK focused or Global funds and whilst they can invest in any listed company, they tend to invest in large, well established companies which pay an above average dividend. Whilst the underlying capital values of the funds can fluctuate significantly with the stock market, the dividend income distributed by the funds is normally higher than cash or bond accounts, and can be an effective way to combat inflation.
NS&I Income Bonds and Cash Bank Accounts: These provide a level of interest income that is variable. It is usually possible to earn a higher interest rate by investing in Fixed Term Bank Cash Accounts and NS&I Guaranteed Income Bonds. Consider laddering the maturities by placing some funds on instant access, then split money between 1,2, and 3 -year maturities. You can usually earn more interest the longer the term, and when a bond matures you can reinvest for a further 3 years (usually at a higher rate) in the knowledge that another of your bonds will be maturing in 12 months. This is known as “laddering” maturities. Corporate Bond and Gilt Funds: Whilst it’s possible to purchase individual Corporate Bonds and Gilts, a fund offers more diversity. An income can be generated from a collection of holdings and the “yield” (the interest paid out) should exceed that generated by NS&I and Cash. Capital values of the underlying investments can fluctuate up and down, so it is important to select the right fund or combination of funds. From a tax perspective, the Personal Savings Allowance allows basic rate taxpayers to receive tax free interest of £1000, reducing to £500 for Higher Rate taxpayers and zero if paying additional rate tax. Any interest earned within an ISA is tax free. This is in addition to
Taxwise, everyone is entitled to a tax- free Dividend Allowance of £2000 per annum and dividend income within an ISA is tax free. Dividends in-excess of this are taxed at 7.5% for basic rate taxpayers, a favorable rate compared to earned income/interest tax of 20%. In addition, “income” can be generated from long term capital gains by utilizing an individual’s annual exemption (currently £11700 but rising to £12000 on 6th April 2019) and this is often overlooked. If gains exceed the exemption, capital gains tax rates are either 10% or 20% depending on which tax band(s) the gain falls into when added on top of your income, which are still lower than tax on earned income/interest. Everyone’s income requirements are different, and any investment solutions should be tailored to your individual needs. These should include your attitude to risk, investment timescale, other sources of income and most importantly your personal objectives during retirement. Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van Tyneham Village on the Isle of Purbeck. Frequently described as a “ghost town” and you certainly feel that when you visit. Poor Nellie, the Dorset Publications Campervan who ‘retired’ earlier this year would have loved the walk back in time in this beautiful, serene, yet sad ambience. In 1943 the Army took over the village, to use the land as their training ground, promising its long-established inhabitants that they could return after the war. That never happened and now still used as an army training ground with tanks and artillery flying by intermittently, the general public is allowed to visit at designated times and days of the year. By chance we took a drive out to the Purbecks on New Years Day, and what a gorgeous day it was. Glorious sunshine, a wonderful crisp English winter’s day. Stephen, Hayden and I set off for Durdle Door to breathe in the “new air” of 2019 and gaze into the vast space beyond the cliff tops. Glistening turquoise blue water shimmering below us with swirling white clouds above us. What
St Mary’s Church, Tyneham
There is a lot of information in the area a wonderful way to start the New Year. The gates at Durdle Door were closing earlier than usual, and I had seen the sign to Tyneham Village on the way. Having never been to the village it seemed a good idea to go and by sheer luck it was open to the public. I would suggest if you want to go, that you check the opening times as you really would not want to be disappointed. You can visit www. dorsetforyou.gov.uk/lulworth-rangewalks to check before you set off. Many of the houses in this former vibrant village are dilapidated, with long lost roofs and broken walls which all adds to this ‘walk back in time’ and mystical feeling which enshrouds the whole area. Nothing bad happened there, except of course that all its inhabitants were taken from their homes and rehoused, to be told they could return. Maybe that is the sadness which hangs over these houses. They never saw their owners again. I believe there are still some inhabitants alive today, but most have regrettably passed away. The scene makes you stop and wonder at who

29 lived there, what were they like, what was life like in those days? Many questions pop up in your mind as you look in wonder. The atmosphere is very quiet and calm. Quite in contrast with the army vehicles, tanks and guns which practice their aim at the targets literally a stone’s throw away when the public are allowed no where near the village. The School House and Church are still fully intact and now little museums to commemorate those who lived there. There are old black and white photos, memorabilia and reminders of our bygone days. Very special. The school is particularly a reminder of the changes which have taken place in the last 60 years. This was a place you did not backflash your elders or question them in any way. Cheekiness was frowned upon. Silence in the classroom was demanded. Yet it also seemed a happy place, one of learning and comradeship, a chance to read about the rest of the world, understand sums and get to know other boys and girls. Personally, I love old churches, and this was does not
The Old School House, Tyneham disappoint either. Idyllic. Set in its own gardens, it is a wonderful example of our many historic buildings. We are so lucky. The village has been featured in the movies too, In 1985 it was used for the filming of Comrades, which depicts the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I have not seen that, have you? Then in 2006 the village was used as the setting for the climax of the comicthriller Angel’s Share by Mike Ripley which I have also not seen. Maybe I will have a look and see if I can find them. I highly recommend a visit to this incredible walk back in time. For us it was a great way to start 2019! By Debbie Corney

On Your Plot Now is the time to go undercover It’s still pretty chilly during February but planting seedlings under glass (or plastic) can give you a great start for the season ahead. A bit of time and money invested now in a polytunnel or greenhouse will give you benefits for years to come. Can’t wait for Spring to come? There’s plenty of vegetables that can be started off indoors now.
Jobs for February:-
• Erect a cold frame, polytunnel or greenhouse • Plant out onion sets • Sow tomatoes indoors • Chit seed potatoes • Sow early beetroot and summer cabbages • Plant soft fruit bushes The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be blooming cold! Extremes in weather are typical for this month so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as it if’s come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, polytunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come. Which is best? Consider the space available - if space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option. Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they
are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try free cycle). We opted for a polytunnel, which was very reasonable in price and gave us several weekends of entertainment building it. Follow the instructions carefully, don’t rush it and you’ll need at least 2 of you when it comes to putting the plastic on. With both greenhouses and polytunnels you need to remember that they can become very hot in the summer and ensure that adequate ventilation is available. So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer. Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon? This is also a good month to think about soft fruit . Most fruit bushes, trees and canes need time to get established before you start to get a good yield and it is easy to overlook them in favour of crops that give a quicker return. If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month, or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather. Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.

‘Walk For Hope’ Means Cancer Patients Never Have To Walk Alone Wessex Cancer Trust’s biggest annual fundraising event, Walk for Hope, returns to the New Forest for its third year on Sunday 9 June, and organisers would love more walkers than ever to stride out and raise vital funds for local people living with cancer. About 300 people took part in the 2018 walk, raising over £50,000. New for 2019 is the option of a five-mile route, alongside the ten and 20-mile distances, making the event even more accessible for supporters of all ages and abilities. Philip Wilson, who raised £670 by taking part in the ten mile event in 2018, said: “I work for John Lewis in Southampton which chose Wessex Cancer Trust’s Waterside Cancer Support Centre in Hythe as its charity of the year, and wanted to take part in this event to show my personal support to those living with cancer. What an emotional day it was. I met people who’ve had cancer and won, have cancer and are winning, and someone who has cancer but it’s incurable. I burst into tears Philip Wilson
reading the dedications on people’s backs, I had a moment in the middle when I thought about the many people I’ve known throughout my 38 years whose lives have been affected by cancer, and again when I crossed the finish line out of sheer pride. It was also a personal challenge for me – something to train for and a way of getting fitter and healthier.” Laura Beavis, Wessex Cancer Trust’s events manager, said: “The peace and beauty of the New Forest make it a fitting setting to come together to give hope to friends and family undergoing cancer treatment, to remember loved ones and to support everyone affected by cancer, and we would love 2019 to be the biggest and best yet.” Entrants will receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. After being cheered over the finish line, walkers will receive a medal and celebrate with well-earned refreshments. Pecan crusted chicken breast stuffed with roasted butternut squash and goats cheese served with a white wine and pancetta cream sauce
1. Pre heat the oven to 380F/180c. 2. Place the butternut squash onto a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place into the oven to bake until cooked through and starting to turn golden brown; this should take For the stuffed chicken approximately 15 to 20 minutes. 4 chicken breasts 3. Using a small knife, make an incision into the side of each chicken 170g butternut squash (peeled and breast. Sprinkle each filled breast with the chopped thyme and season 50ml olive oil generously with sea salt and black pepper. For the sauce 6. To prepare the pecans take whole pecans and pulse them in a food ¼ white onion (finely diced) 4 slices of pancetta or smoked streaky processor until they resemble course breadcrumbs. 7. Beat the eggs with ¼ tsp of salt (which helps to break down the egg bacon, chopped making it easier to dip the chicken in) and place the chopped pecans into 1 tsp freshly chopped thyme a bowl. Then dip each cutlet into the egg mixture and then the pecans 1 clove garlic, crushed and make sure they are well coated. 180 ml double cream 8. Place the chicken breasts onto a tray drizzled with olive oil and then 120 ml dry white wine drizzle each breast generously with more olive oil and season once more. 4 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated Place into the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown. 9. Garnish the escallops with the remaining caramelized onions and freshly chopped parsley, don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewers before serving! 10. To make the sauce start by sautéing the pancetta or bacon until crispy and then add the onions and cook through until softened. At this point add the garlic and thyme and continue to cook for another minute to release the flavors. 11. Add the white wine and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until almost all of the wine has evaporated. Then add the cream, parmesan and seasoning. Continue to simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 12. To serve, place each chicken breast onto a serving plate (don’t forget to remove the cocktail skewer) and spoon over the sauce. Top with some of the remaining butternut squash and some roughly chopped pecans and Ryan Turner, real food and low-carb a sprinkle of parsley. chef - www.thefoodbible.com
