Dear St Leonards, St Ives, Ashley Heath & Avon Castle, Happy Valentines Day to all our wonderful readers! This is the time of year we sit and think about the sunshine, warmer times and the ability to get out more again. Stephen, myself and Hayden, (with Nellie the campervan of course) have started to do more walking, even on cold days, so long as it is dry. It is a great way to lift the spirits, get away from the TV and blow the cobwebs away. We had a wonderful walk to Moors Valley last week and even met friends on the way. What a success. So, if you are able to get out I do think it helps. Nellie also took us on a “Murder Mystery Walk” around Wimborne… in the dark! What fun that was. I do hope you have time for a read and better still try a “Treasure Trail” for yourselves. You can even win £100 if you enter their competition! St Leonards & St Ives Parish Council Orchids in the Parish – The Parish is fortunate to be the home to the orchid Autumn Ladies Tresses, also known as Spiranthes Spiralis. They appear on the “near Threatened” and on the England Red Data List but they have no more protection than other wild flowers.
All flowers are protected to some extent under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1980) in that they cannot be dug up without the landowner’s permission but that is where it stops. The District Council has altered its verge cutting schedule to encourage the flowers by trying not to cut affected verges in August/early September but are mindful of their obligations to maintain the verges for their residents. We are not suggesting to anyone that they should not cut verges in fact we and I am sure many residents are grateful for those community minded individuals who cut the verge outside of their homes as it all helps to keep the area looking cared for. We would though ask, that you look during the late July/August period for the small white flowers and perhaps delay cutting the verge if present until they have finished flowering as they do look very pretty and give many pleasure as they pass by. Public participation in Council Meetings – The Parish Council is required to conduct itself in a transparent manner. This means that legally it can only discuss matters that are stated on a publically advertised agenda. We are required to publish the agenda at least three clear working days in advance and we do so on our website www.stleonardspc.org.uk and on the Parish noticeboards around the Parish. Meetings are open to the public but the law says that whilst open the public cannot
participate in the discussion and debate of the Council meeting. The public can make a representation to the Council and this is clearly advertised when this can occur on each agenda. This can sometimes cause some issues particularly when the public come along and expect to speak on an item at length. The Parish Council welcomes the interest of the Public but in order that the business of the meeting can proceed it has to have a method in controlling the amount of time allocated to any item on the agenda. Without some form of control we could in some cases not conclude other items on the agenda which whilst of less interest to those attending may in fact be more time sensitive. The Council has therefore after consultation with other bodies formulated a public speaking policy.
A copy of this is available on our website but in simple terms the Parish Council will allow up to two speakers for and two against to speak in the Public Forum on any item listed. The maximum tine allowed per person will be 2 minutes and if a large group attends on one item the group will be asked to nominate a spokesperson. Local Heritage: Lynes, Lions and a Zoo Variations in the spelling of place names is common throughout history, such that one is always having to consider the likely connections of similar names within a given area. Simply using the ones in the title, one first finds the name “Lyne” appearing in Elizabethan times in connection with Leybrook Manor, which survives as small areas known as Leybrook Common near the Avon Castle area, next to the Spur Road. Richard Lyne became a local benefactor who set up a free school, known as “the Elizabethan School”, in what is believed to have been the original Saxon church within the churchyard in Ringwood. That building can be seen on the 1769 Willis map, copies available in one of the files at the Meeting House. The original map was later deposited at HRO Winchester on behalf of the church. By the early 1700s a James Lyne owned some 500 acres in Barnsfield, once an area known as New Barn Field, today much of the area containing the Avon Heath Country Park. They gave me first sight of a plan of his lands, at the time in use to show children something of the past. Various “turbary delphs” are shown where individual tenants could cut turves to use for roofing or burning. A copy of this map was later found within a Malmesbury file at HRO, dating it as 1730. Another Lyne, unlikely
to be directly connected, is a blacksmith, William Lyne, who purchased a small plot in Ringwood at the time of the 1807-11 Enclosure Awards. Once part of Bickerley Common, the lane down from the High Street soon became known as Lyne’s Lane, and remains so today. Various old maps show a Lion’s Hill south of the Horton Road, close to the Moors River. Recent researches into what were once a pair of cottages, now known as Little Lion’s Farm, has taken me back to my earlier studies of Lion’s Hill Farm itself. In the past the names of various owners of the surrounding lands have appeared on maps and estate plans. Of particular note within my researches around the mid-18th century there were Monica’s and Bright’s. Lion’s Hill Farm appeared later instead of Bright’s, but the latest studies revealed a Cook’s and, perhaps significantly, a Lane’s.

15 Lion’s Hill Farmhouse itself is a “two-part” building, with some earlier cob and timber elements at the back, but a distinctly lateVictorian red brick front section. There is also a 17th century barn on site. While visiting some years ago, the then owner or tenant had stated that, within some old deeds, the name was actually spelt “Lyon’s”. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to check these documents. The name Lion’s Lane appears in the 1920s while William Webb is developing his Ashley Heath Garden Estate. There may well have been an earlier rough path in the vicinity. However, the constantly curving route of his roads is a feature of his design. Of note is today’s Woolsbridge Road, originally known within his estate as St. Leonards Hill. On early maps, the almost straight footpath from the crossing on the Horton Road down to “Gipsy Bottom” can be found under his curves. The name Lion’s Hill is said by some to have originated from the fact that, from a certain angle, it resembled a crouched lion. Rather
more sinister …. and distinctly wrong …. was the suggestion it was where a lion that had escaped from a local zoo had been shot! This posed the question of the whereabouts of this zoo. This was later found on a large scale OS 1940s map of St. Ives village, at a property on the service road known today as “Avon Cottage”. An old local resident told me that he remembered visiting it pre-WW2, when it had a zebra’s head in a nearby tree to advertise its presence, entry apparently 6d. There are suggestions the animals came from Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester during the war, to avoid the bombing. Perhaps a more likely source could have been the circus in Southampton. Ted Harvey, the publican at the St. Leonards Hotel, apparently told a tale of encountering a panther while patrolling with the local policeman as a Special Duties officer. There are also reports of a lion escaping from another “zoo” in Ferndown. Similar snippets of local history are regular features of my talks to groups and organisations. A list of the numerous subjects covered is available on request. My fee is always donated to the Meeting House, where, as a registered charity, it qualifies for Gift Aid. Talking about Wildlife...
Birds of a feather... At about 4pm on a cold winter’s day, the sky may come alive with the shape of birds flocking together, with the sudden deafening sound of chitter chatter filling the air. One of wildlife’s most spectacular sights is approaching – a swooping and swirling murmuration of starlings. It may surprise you to know that starlings are actually becoming a less common sight in the UK, so seeing a flock of them is a wonderful thing. Other winter visitors flocking include birds from Eastern Europe and even species from the far northern regions, such as redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. So, why do birds flock? Well, why not! Birds can move easily and quickly, so they make the most of an annual trip to the UK, with an abundance of food, and a warmer climate to enjoy. Flocks of birds are also essential for their survival this time of year, as

their main advantage is literally their safety in numbers and they can distract predators with the sheer size of the group, making it hard for them to focus on just one bird when there’s so many, so close together. Large groups of birds can also stay warm, and hunt together, increasing their chances of survival. Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserves are an excellent place to witness these special wildlife sights this winter, but you are also likely to see some activity in your own garden, by leaving out water and food for birds. The Adventures of Nellie The Dorset Publications Camper Van It was a chilling dark winter’s night. We arrived at Walford Mill Craft Centre all wrapped up with scarves, gloves and torches, ready for our “Murder Mystery” walk. Who did it? What with? These were the allimportant questions and we had just 2 hours to follow the clues and discover the culprit. Would we solve the Mystery in the Vestry? Ivana Cramp had been a keen member of the Minster Choir for years. She had recently come into a large inheritance when her body was found. Was this a deed of greed… or because Ivana had an overpowering,

flat voice? We were about to find out. This is all fiction of course but we really got into the ‘spirit’ of things. Nellie had inadvertently come across “Treasure Trails” while surfing the internet one evening. She is getting very clever as you can see! These trails are described as ‘the fun way to explore’ and can be purchased online at www.treasuretrails.co.uk or often in tourist information offices. There are a series of clues which take you all around a particular area, giving you facts and some history about local sites, whilst you find the answers to each piece of evidence and finally eliminate all but one name and the weapon used. At that point you have the guilty party! There are many places to explore and it is a great way to get to know somewhere. Not all are murder mystery trails, so have a look and

see if there is one where you live or are visiting. It really is a fun way to get around! There were twelve of us taking the challenge that night, wanting to solve the mystery. We tried to guess from the list of people we were given, who ‘did it’ before we started. Julie got it right! How did she know I wonder… Was she really an accomplice? Now Nellie’s imagination was running riot and she was just taking this too far. I have had words with her. It was so much fun. Some of the clues do need some deciphering, others are more straight forward, but each step takes you further and further around the town. Wimborne is a fabulous place to shop and visit. The Minster looming up to the sky right in the town centre, the Jubilee Gardens, the old grandiose school house now housing flats for local residents, the River meandering through, the Quarterjack on the West Tower, with his brightly uniformed grenadier, who still strikes the quarters every

hour, day and night, the more modern statue of a skateboarder. What a wealth of interest to see. Even in the dark! You do not have to do this walk in the dark of course, but Nellie likes to be different and it all added to the ambience of our quest. The bright torches were useful to say the least. We solved the mystery! After all that investigating we were quite exhausted. Like Nellie we are getting on a bit now… Time for something to eat and drink. We had actually booked a carvery at the Bridge House Hotel in Longham. Delicious and great value, Nellie highly recommends it in fact. Probably because you can pile up your plate and go back for seconds. You don’t get thighs like that on lettuce leaves… Well we can safely say that Ivana from the Choir can rest in peace. Nellie isn’t giving you the answer as you could find out for yourself who did it… Where will Nellie take us next? By Debbie Corney

Chocolate Amnesty at Ferndown Fitness For the fourth year in a row Ferndown Fitness held their annual ‘Christmas Amnesty’ encouraging members to bring in any unopened chocolates, biscuits and sweets etc to donate to Julias House Children’s Hospice. It's never too soon to get children interested in gardening and where their food comes from. Even the fussiest child should be prepared to try a warm, sweet strawberry or raspberry straight from the plant or a handful of peas out of the pod (my Dad often wondered why half of his pea crop had suddenly disappeared although I'm sure he had his suspicions!) At any time of the year, children can start to understand the concept of things growing from seed if you give them a packet of cress seeds and, although they can be grown in a shallow tray, make it even more fun by saving the shells from
their breakfast boiled eggs that have had their tops cut off. Draw a face on the eggshell and fill with peat free compost or even moist kitchen roll and sprinkle with seeds. When it grows the little egg man will have a mop of green hair that they can snip and eat. In the spring, let them have a competition growing the tallest sunflower by learning how to feed and water them. They can keep some dried out seeds for next year and feed the rest to the birds in winter. Although they might shy away from anything green on their plates, they might find plenty of chopped chives, basil, marjoram/oregano and/or thyme only improves their favourite pizza or Bolognese sauce.

Now, here’s a question that you might not know the answer to but will almost certainly have an opinion on. Is the Range Rover Sport one of the most influential cars of the modern era? A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little
lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.
