Heritage: Christmas is coming! Within the previous December editions I told a local ghost story in 2017. Last year I described the help provided to those on hard times by the local Poor House on the Verwood Road. Perhaps this year we deserve something a little more pleasing, despite the desperate uncertainties that abound as I write mid-September! So here is what we at the Meeting House have planned to brighten things up. Local artist Martin Blake returns again for the whole month and into the New Year with a new selection of his paintings for sale, most based on photographs, many including local views past and present. These pictures were taken during his display in April this year. His wife Jayne will have more of her hand-made greetings cards on sale, inevitably including some Christmas ones, all at ridiculously low prices.
These Christmas crib ďŹ gures have long been in use at the Meeting House, but one of the three kings was broken when someone nudged the font. Luckily we had a spare. I then created a panorama that year, using an old bird table for the stable. It has become increasingly elaborate as the years pass by. This was the 2016 version. The Christmas tree is another essential, on which one of our Trustees or volunteers will be given the task of hanging all the baubles and draping the lights, not forgetting the fairy! both the crib and tree have been visible through the side windows to passers-by. On the occasion that this picture was taken, one of the local schools provided an exhibition of their pupils’ efforts to illustrate the season of goodwill. In the past volunteers dressed as gnomes have welcomed children in to make lanterns and cards, while some organisations have held a craft fair for charity. This year, the Meeting House will open on the first Sunday
when the Town holds its Fair. Ted Baker’s widow Barbara continues to persuade her organists to return and include our 1860s pipe organ within their concerts. Byron, the Welsh Wizard, will be here on 5th December. Now I have to think of more history to fill these pages throughout 2020! A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY READERS! John Hawkins

Fascinating Fungi Fungi don’t fit into the plant or animal kingdoms but into an entire category of their own. The Fungi kingdom is a large group of organisms that includes yeasts, moulds, and, of course, mushrooms. Found everywhere - in the soil, in water, on and within plants, and even in the human body - fungi are essential to life on earth and they have a fascinating biology. Fungi play an important role within our ecosystems, helping to recycle nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter releasing carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the soil and the atmosphere. Without fungi, these recycling activities would be seriously reduced, and we would have a lot more decaying material around our feet. They are important directly as food for us, with many edible mushroom species grown and harvested for sale and some mushrooms and truffles considered as delicacies. While mushrooms aren’t a large proportion of what we eat day to day, fungi are also widely used in the production of many other foods and drinks such as cheeses, beer and wine, and bread. Fungi are also vitally important for the good

growth of most plants and crops. In 1885, German biologist Albert Bernard Frank coined the word “mycorrhiza” to describe this symbiotic relationship in which fungus grows around plant roots. This gives the plants greater access to water and minerals such as phosphorus and nitrogen and even increases their immunity. In exchange, the plant provides carbohydrates and other nutrients to the fungi. Dorset Wildlife Trust manages many nature reserves to support and benefit all kinds of wildlife, including fungi. In west Dorset, Kingcombe Meadows and Powerstock are some of the best places in England to find fungi species, many of them rare, all of them beautiful. The huge variation in geology and plant life at Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve ensures a variety of habitats which allows for a larger variety of fungus species than one would expect in a few hundred acres. Understanding Investments: How to Combat Inflation - The Enemy of Retirees Anyone on a fixed income will know the painful effect inflation can have on their expenditure. When the cost of living increases almost every year, one’s standard of living is eroded unless your income is inflation-proofed. People in retirement are particularly exposed to this risk; inflation really is the silent but clinical assassin of a worry-free retirement! The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publish a composite price index, showing inflation rates in the UK since 1947. We probably don’t need to plan for over 60 years of inflation during retirement…. but we should be planning for around 30 years. Going back to 1988, the average inflation rate for the most recent 30year period has been 3.1% per annum. This doesn’t sound high, but it means £10,000 in 1988 would now need to be £26,341 to have the same purchasing power (ie buy the same things).

The state pension currently provides protection against inflation, as do many final salary pension schemes. For some clients the combination of these can help reduce the effects of inflation but they don’t usually cover all expenditure. Often, they cover the basics such as food, heating and bills but what about the enjoyable things people do when retired? Discretionary expenditure may need to be drawn down from a client’s savings. With the current low interest rate environment, capital can quickly be depleted.
I am not suggesting that investing in dividend paying equity funds is the answer to a secure and happy retirement. Capital values can fluctuate, as can the dividend payments. I am suggesting that there are high quality investment solutions available which, in the right circumstances and for the right client, can help solve this problem experienced by many retirees. Of course, there is still a place for cash, NS&I and other low risk investments, which should form the foundation of a saver’s investment portfolio. But unless you know you have enough capital to last throughout your lifetime, holding only cash or fixed rate investments leaves you fully exposed to the risk of inflation, which compounds annually and is unrelenting.

Rabbits, Kindness and Mission Christmas What has big ears, a twitchy nose and is loved and adored by a small person? A Sylvanian Family rabbit to the average adult human looks like a small hard plastic rabbit covered in a velvet material – it stands, motionless on two feet. However, to the 5-year-old girl who received not only one rabbit but also a whole family of rabbits, this was her world over Christmas. A world she could escape into, make up stories and create imaginary lives. Lily* was one of the children who was helped by Wave 105 Mission Christmas. Identified by her school as a family in need of support, Lily and her dad had been through a rough time and were struggling financially. Dad as a single parent was trying to make ends meet by juggling work and looking after his daughter. They only just had enough money for basic needs – food and a roof over their head but certainly not enough for presents. Lily’s school contacted us and asked if we would add them to our list of families to help. Her teacher mentioned that all Lily wanted this Christmas was a Sylvanian Family animal and her dad had been scouring charity shops to find one but to no avail. Every day during December, an army of volunteers in Chandlers Ford were counting and sorting through the mountain of donated presents. Every day they checked for specifically requested toys but no luck for Lily. Then one morning towards the end of Mission Christmas, a van-load of presents was delivered from Sainsbury’s and in the midst of the trains, cars, dolls, teddies, books and Lego was a Sylvanian rabbit family and a house for them to live in. Lily’s teacher collected and gave them to her dad. Lily was able to play with her little family over Christmas and throughout the following year. This would not have happened without the generosity of individuals and companies who donate every year to Mission Christmas. Over 93,000 children and young people live in poverty in the south (SO, PO and BH postcodes)** which means these children do not eat a hot meal on a daily basis, have no central heating in their homes and do not own a full uniform to wear to school. During our annual Mission Christmas campaign, Wave 105 Cash for Kids asks the public to donate new and unwrapped gifts to help these disadvantaged youngsters, so they will have something to open on Christmas Day. This is our community, helping our local children to have a Happy Christmas. The Dorset Publications Camper Van For anyone who is new to reading these fun pages, I would like to give you some background. They are meant to be a little tongue in cheek, family and friends orientated with places to visit around our wonderful southern coast and countryside. “Daichi” is a Japanese Nissan Elgrand, a converted Campervan who has a life of his own. He likes to show off and it is he that gets us out of the house, away from the computers and the TV, looking outwards. Daichi had his first criticism last month, a serious gentleman who did not see eye to eye with the “Dashing Dude’s” playful nature. You see, we like to bring a smile to your face and maybe lighten life up a bit. (We sincerely apologise to the gentleman who clearly did not react like this.) After-all there are plenty of things that do the opposite, so let’s not be too serious, let’s live a little, have some good old English entertainment and create some great memories. Here we go… again! Daichi really did his homework this month. Caring for the environment is so important and Daichi found something rather special. True to his nature, this area has a name that makes you instantly smile…

A sighting of the lesser-spotted Debbie! “Slop Bog”. Yes, we went to Slop Bog! You can imagine my reaction, or maybe best not to. Actually, this is a fascinating place, situated just off the A31 to Ferndown and the B3072 to West Moors. It is an SSSI that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest! Not only is it a fascinating place to explore, but it was saved by a group of people who call themselves, “The Slop Bog Guardians”. How wonderful is that. Way back in 2003 trees were going to be felled and this group of dedicated locals got together to save the day. Their motto is - “To preserve and protect the character of Slop Bog Local Nature Reserve by maintaining a balance between the views of the local community and national conservation strategies”. Daichi is impressed. We had got all kitted out in wellies and raincoats, and Daichi had the coffee ready. He knows me well. 29 nature, with a wall, a backdrop of constant swishing and humming from the hundreds of cars passing on the main road just on the other side of the majestic outline of trees. The difference between our busy, hustling, noisy lifestyle and the serenity of nature is unmissable. Not far into the bog we saw, what I thought was something burnt in the middle of a clump of trees… showing my ignorance, it turned out to be a food block, possibly a salt lick for the cows roaming around! The trampled muddy earth around it, made it look like a burning. Maybe I am once again showing the difference between our ‘dangerous environment’ which is all too often prevalent in the news and the calmness of what was actually before me. A very good reason to get out, away from our electronic age for a while. The British White Cattle even came over to say Hello and prove it was a feeding area! Stephen enjoyed doing his best David Bailey impersonation, taking lots of photos of the curious calf. We regrettably did not see any lizards, snakes or slow worms, or maybe this was a blessing as Daichi may have screeched off and left us stranded. In the summer this is a haven for butterflies and birds including Stonechats, Dartford Warbler,

Cattle roam the heathland Nightjars, Snipes and the Greater Spotted Woodpecker. This day you could only see the Lesser Spotted Debbie… literally in my raincoat. Frogs love it here too and all sorts of funghi thrive in full glory. The beauty, the space and the tranquillity really helps you to see things in perspective, ‘chill out’ (literally, as it was not too warm) and collect your thoughts. The coffee that Daichi provided from his whistling kettle, overlooking the heathland was very welcomed. A simple morning out on a cold, slightly wet November day. Life does not have to be full on 24-7. Time out can make all the difference. There are hundreds of these Sites of Scientific Interest, over 4000 in fact in the UK and 240 in Dorset alone. Maybe you could find one and let Daichi know? He loves to hear from you. It is always possible to help and volunteers are welcomed with open arms. It is a great way to meet new friends, learn some new skills and look after the environment. A win-win we say. As Christmas is coming and there is much to do, do remember to take some time out for yourself. Taking a walk is very therapeutic. A Very Merry Christmas to you all, from Daichi the Dashing Dude! No garden can have too much compost and rich, fertile soil is the key to great vegetables and plants. In these days of fortnightly bin collections (and the threat of slop buckets for our kitchens) why leave kitchen waste to fester in your wheelie bin when it can be put to good use? Find a corner somewhere in the garden to start a compost heap or, if space is limited, many councils offer bins for the purpose at reasonable prices. If building your own bin, it's best to put it on a soil base which will attract worms to start work on the heap. You could use old planks of wood or chicken wire supported by posts in each corner. This works well as it is important that air can get in to help the process. You need a good mixture of material to make good compost. If you just put in grass cuttings you'll end up with a foul, soggy mess so they should be mixed with shredded newspaper, pruning clippings (not the really woody stems)
and even cardboard. Annual weeds can go in as long as they haven't gone to seed but avoid perennial weeds like dandelions as even the smallest piece of root will produce another plant. Almost all vegetable waste from the kitchen can be used, but avoid meat, fish and cooked food as these may attract rats etc. Use crushed eggshells, used teabags, used kitchen towels and fruit and vegetable peelings. Keep the mixture damp. The aim is to end up with something that is dark, crumbly and sweet smelling and alive with worms. If you wanted to hurry up the process, you can buy accelerants from hardware shops and garden centres but a cheaper and just as efficient method involves collecting urine, diluting it with water and wetting the heap with it. Well, what do you imagine our ancestors used?

Marine Paintings of the New Forest Exhibition The New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst is now host to its first marine painting exhibition dedicated to the New Forest National Park’s beautiful coastal environment. The event was opened by Hon. Mrs Mary Montagu-Scott at a well-attended preview evening in October. The exhibition features five local artists: Barry Peckham, Peter Frost, Richard Tratt, Colin Richens and Barry Miles. Barry Peckham recently celebrated 50 years of painting with a retrospective exhibition, also at the New Forest Heritage Centre. Peter Frost said, “it’s been great working towards this exhibition and we are all thrilled to see our paintings looking so good on display in the centre of the New Forest”.

Giles Gould, Centre Manager, is delighted to be able to show the coastal beauty of the New Forest National Park. “The New Forest occupies 220 square miles and has 26 miles of stunning coastline, much of which is little-known. Tastes so good... Mulled Wine
An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don't bother with expensive wine - a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Eat, Drink and be merry!
Ingredients for 4- 6 servings 1 bottle dry red wine 2 (5cm) cinnamon sticks 1 dessertspoon whole cloves 1 dessertspoon whole allspice 1 large piece orange rind (avoid the pith) 1 large piece lemon rind (avoid the pith) 2-4 tablespoons demerara sugar, (or to taste)
Preparation time: less than 30 mins Cooking time: less than 10 mins Serves: 4- 6 adults
Method
Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don't bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you'd like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the avours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the ďŹ reside.
