Ringwood School - £2.8 Million of Funding Success Ringwood School has been successful in securing £2.8 million of grants to carry out major improvement works to school buildings under the Government’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) programme. £2.2 million will be spent on a brand-new School Hall and associated works including signiﬁcant improvementsto existing student dining facilities, and £0.6 million will be spent on a thermal upgrades and re-rooﬁng works to the Science and Technology buildings. The School has worked on the funding bid with Ringwood based consultantsKendall Kingscott. The CIF programme is an annual round of bidding under which academy schools and colleges can apply for funding for the upkeep and improvement of their buildings and to fund expansion projects for schools that have been rated good or

outstanding by Ofsted. Leanne Symonds, Headteacher said: “Ringwood School is an oversubscribed, successful and high achieving school, but the facilities we are able to oﬀer our young people at lunch time are much too crowded and insuﬃcient. This successful application will enable us to build a new facility large enough to accommodate the daily needs of a busy school, but will also ensure we can providea safer, light, warm space to eat in a civilised manner thus providing outstanding opportunities for physical, social and emotional development of all students and the best conditions for their learning”. Works on both projects will commence later this summer and are anticipated to be complete for September 2022.

Re-development of Long Lane, Ringwood AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust, Ringwood Town Council and Ringwood Town Football Club are excited to announce a partnership to develop the facilities at Long Lane, Ringwood. The three organisations are being supported by New Forest District Council, the Football Foundation and Hampshire County FA to help bring the vision into fruition, with an application for planning permission to be submitted soon. The significant investment into the re-development at Long Lane represents an opportunity to develop an excellent sporting and social facility for the town of Ringwood. The site will continue to be the home of Ringwood Town FC and will enable staff and players associated with AFC Bournemouth’sCommunity Sports Trust to be based on site. Crucially, a number of Community programmes will also be based on site and all in the one location. The phased development will comprise of: a new full size 3G artificial turf pitch (ATP), improvements to existing grass pitches, redeveloping the car park and a new pavilion with changing rooms. Speaking about the redevelopment and partnership with Ringwood Town, Head of Community Steve Cuss said: ‘This is a hugely exciting and innovative development for the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust. Talking about Wildlife...

Reptiles: soaking up the sun in Dorset Like humans, reptiles love basking in the sun at this time of year. In Dorset we are lucky to have lowland heathland habitat to support all six British native reptile species.

Reptiles are truly magnificent creatures, but they need a very specific habitat to thrive in and can be very sensitive to changes in their environment, which is why all reptile species are legally protected. You also need a license to handle and monitor them. As reptiles are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they bask in the sun to warm up, and hide away in the shade to cool down again. During the colder months they hibernate, but in the summer months, reptiles will be enjoying the sunshine and feasting on the delights the heath has to offer, with lizards preying on spiders and insects and snakes favouring small mammals. As with lots of wildlife species in Dorset, their survival and success is largely due to having well-managed habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Great Heath team work hard on our heaths to ensure there is sandy soil, low vegetation and not too many trees, to create a dry and warm habitat for reptiles. Sand Lizard

From modest beginnings on MTV and Eurotrash, she truly leapt into the limelight with Big Brother, and there followed a decade in the surrounds of one of the UK’s most famous houses. In the process she became the face of a new genre of reality television, and a household name in the process. “I feel I have evolved in terms of the person I am and the work that I do, but at the heart of it I’ve always been fascinated by British TV and entertainment,” she begins. “I think that’s why so much of my work comes back to that.”

While we can’t all morph into ﬁtness fanatics, it’s hard to deny a spare seven minutes here and there during the day, even with the most hectic of schedules. “Sometimes that’s all it takes to free up your limbs and keep circulation going,” she says. “I fear the fact lockdown held a lot of people back from pursuing normal exercise, and now we’re heading back towards normality, there is a real need for people to repair the physical and mental effects of the past year, and I pray that happens.”

Welcome to the August Stargazing Page. Highlights this month include 2021’s best meteor shower, the gas giants on display, and how to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. International Space Station The ISS is only visible for the last few days of August, between 3 – 6am. To establish exact timings please refer to www.heavens-above.com or a similar webpage for up-to-date information, remembering to set the location to your home town. Events The annual Perseid meteor shower, famous for its bright ﬁreballs and persistent trains, reaches its peak this year on the night of 12 - 13th August. Fortunately, the optimum time to spot most meteors is after midnight, and as the Moon sets at 10.30pm we will be left with a dark sky to observe the best meteor shower of the year. Grab a warm drink, coat and a blanket and see what you can spot. Although the radiant for the shower is towards the northeast, the meteors can appear to come from any direction in the sky. Mercury & Mars The Solar System’s two smallest planets lie adjacent to each other low on the western horizon after sunset and are incredibly diﬃcult to locate, being lost in the Sun’s glare.

Object of the Month August is a great month to locate the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, found within the constellation of Sagittarius. Look for the ‘Teapot’ asterism low to the south around 9pm (see figure). Its spout points towards the galactic centre, which hosts a super massive black hole called Sgr A* that has a mass equivalent of 4 million suns. This area is wonderfully rich in star clusters and a set of binoculars swept over the area will reveal a magnificent suite of astronomical objects. This part of the sky never gets very high, and is best viewed between July and September, so get out there if you can and enjoy it whilst it lasts! You’ll need a good view south – the Bournemouth clifftop is a good place to look, but watch out for low sea mists and heat haze disrupting your view. View S throughout Aug at 9:30PM

Venus Conversely, Venus is the incredibly bright object in the west, visible until about 9.30pm. Jupiter and Saturn Jupiter and Saturn ﬁnally return in all their splendour to our evening skies. Located low in the southeast around 9pm, they move higher towards the south around midnight. Jupiter, on the left, is the brighter of the two (see ﬁgure). If you are able to look at Jupiter through a pair of binoculars you may see four pinpricks of light close to the planet. These are its four largest moons; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Moon This month’s full moon occurs on 22nd August, and is traditionally known by a variety of names, including Barley, Fruit and Grain Moon. 22

Carver’s Clubhouse releases its ‘Summer of Play’ activity programme August to give adults and children tips to improve their game. Activities are available either free or at a very low cost to ensure that all local families can take part.

Carvers Clubhouse, a community centre in Ringwood, has released a special summer holiday activity programme which has been inspired by a national campaign to give children the time, space, and freedom to play this summer as COVID restrictions are eased. The programme, which runs for the school summer holidays, features organised and informal opportunities for play and fun. For example, you can come along and test your inner clown when the Steamship Circus visits on the 6 August for a Circus Skills Day. Or laugh along with Krazy Kev on the 13 August who will be performing his comedy and magic show.

Even if you do not want to take part in the activities you can come down to Carvers Recreation Ground and enjoy the skate park, play area, new football goals and table tennis table. The Clubhouse has a popular community café and during opening hours (generally 10am to 5pm) you can borrow sports equipment (footballs, rugby balls, table tennis bats and balls, even a rounders set) or outdoor games such as Jenga and there are toys to keep young children and toddlers entertained. Carvers Clubhouse is owned and managed by Ringwood Town Council and is situated on Carvers Recreation Ground, a short walk from the Town Centre.

Understanding Investments: Personal Pensions (including SIPPs) For many people, the value of their pension savings can be their most significant asset, alongside their home. However, pension savings are often neglected due to perceived complexity surrounding pension rules, investment choice and clients accruing multiple schemes throughout a working life. Whilst there are different types of pensions (Final Salary and Money Purchase), and a number of flexible choices once retirement is reached, I want to focus this article on three of the most important things to consider with money purchase schemes during the accumulation stage (usually whilst working and contributing) that will influence the value of your pension at retirement; Contribution Level, Investment Content and Charges. 1: Contribution Level: Auto-enrolment now obligates an employer to contribute a % of earnings to an employees’ pension (subject to certain earnings limits). In addition, an employee (or a director and the self-employed) can contribute an amount linked to their earnings. The incentive to do so currently available from the government is that they provide tax-relief on personal contributions, so a basic rate taxpayer saves 20% tax on their pension contributions, a higher rate taxpayer 40% and additional rate 45%. Company directors can also make pension contributions from their company rather than paying them personally which can save the company corporation tax and the director income tax. There are maximum annual allowance limits applicable. 2: Investment Content: Once the money has been paid into the pension scheme, it should usually be invested in an attempt to earn a higher return than cash and aim to preserve and grow the real value of the pension fund (the value after inflation). Different pension schemes will offer a variety of investment options; some will offer a wide investment choice and others can be more

restricted. Modern plans usually provide a wider range, with SIPP’s Howard Goodship usually offering the greatest choice. The level of investment risk should be considered on an individual basis, linked to your attitude to risk, the time left before reaching retirement and your overall financial situation (including other savings and investments). It should be remembered that investment returns are not guaranteed. 3: Charges: Since the introduction of auto enrolment, competition amongst pension providers has increased and charges have reduced. This is great news for clients but whilst some older schemes have adjusted their charges accordingly, many haven’t. The amount you pay in charges will have a direct impact on the value of the pension fund at retirement and the longer the money remains invested, the bigger the impact on your pension value. In combination the right level of contribution, invested in high quality investments with reasonable charges can be a powerful formula to help provide you with a financially secure retirement. The Modern Magazines Camper Van Isn’t it great to go for a walk in our luscious green, English countryside! Daichi highly recommends walking to clear away the mental cobwebs and stresses of the week. He loves to bounce his way to the destination, always with a picnic, coffee at the ready and a big stealy white smile. We love him. This time he took us to Pamphill near Wimborne in East Dorset. There are bluebell woods here which can look amazing at the right time of the year. In 2018 the National Trust planted 2500 trees at the Abbott Street Plantation, which you can see on the map. This included oak, hazel, scots pine, sweet chestnut and wild cherry trees. The intention is to extend the ancient woodland for future generations, so they continue to enjoy our wonderful wildlife and views. How cool is that. Ancient woodland at Abbott Street Copse taking a walk can help us too, recover from a taxing week. In addition to that some of the dead trees, known as “standing deadwood” have been deliberately left where they have stood for hundreds of years. These old, decayed trees, which still have a wonderful presence about them, are great for wildlife and create a haven for woodpeckers, insects, tree creepers and a large variety of fungi. They make it a heathy habitat for other species to thrive. I love nature and there is definitely something very magical about this woodland. I take my hat off (or Daichi’s bonnet) to the National Trust who are preserving this delightful area. We really enjoyed our meanderings. Once out of the sheltered wood, we walked to more open ground, across fields and climbed over stiles to follow the walk we had found on our phone. Modern technology working with ancient woodlands and a beautiful leisurely stroll. The walk is about an hour long, though we were walking pretty slowly really, so for those who like more of a hike you could probably do this in half an

hour! We like to amble, take our time and breathe in the fresh air. We saw buzzards, deer, horses and walkers with dogs. The view further on the trail is amazing. Rolling hills and farmhouses. One thatched cottage in the distance had had a fire and was burnt to a cinder, all black and eerie looking. I do not know the story there, but I certainly hope everyone was safe. Back at the Pamphill Green car park we decided to visit St Stephen’s Church, which is the Bankes Family Church. The Bankes family owned Kingston Lacy Country House and this Church was built in memory of Walter Ralph Bankes who was a Lord High Admiral of Purbeck. I immediately noticed there were no gravestones. Call me odd, but as a teenager and later at university I used to walk around Churches and Graveyards to read the tombstones. I found it fascinating to see who was alive in the area then, how long they had lived and see family members all together. Pure enchantment. To others I was seen as a little ‘mad’ I think! Well, it is a good job we are all different I say. So, immediately seeing there were no gravestones to read, I looked it up on good old Google and found that land has to be consecrated in order to have a burial ground. Holy water, which has been blessed by a priest is used to make the land sacred and only then can

Daichi waited in the woods the land be used for burials. This land was obviously not consecrated and thus no tombstones to read. Churches do have a certain atmosphere about them, especially chocolate-box looking ones like this one. Idyllic. This Church was built in 1907 after seven years of construction. The previous Church had been left to go to ruins and unlike the dead trees in the woods, a broken-down, dilapidated Church does not aid others in their survival, so a new one had to be built. Well, they did a very good job I have to say. All this countryside walking and fresh air meant that refreshments were in order. The Vine Inn Pub is a very short drive down the road and as it was a lovely evening, we decided to sit in the garden there and have a drink. A great end to a very simple, relaxed afternoon. After all the chasing around of the week it was delightful to sit and listen to birds singing, taste the fresh night air and chill out. Daichi watched us with an equally lazy smile. Wherever you live there is countryside not that far away. If you are able to get out and about, all you need is walking shoes and a jacket just in case. 1 - Only buy what you love Tempting as it may be to buy new clothes every payday, you may ﬁnd more fulﬁlment in the long-term by saving up and investing in pieces that will last and that you will treasure for years to come. Remember, true style is timeless. 2 - Invest in vintage The beauty of good quality fabric is that it lasts. From super-soft cashmere jumpers to impeccably cut denim jeans and piles of retro tees that get

better with every wash, vintage shops are the affordable antidote to throwaway fashion. 3 - Seek ‘circularminded’ brands As there is clearly a market for synthetic fabric in fashion, it makes perfect sense that plastic marked for landﬁll – such as cola bottles, shopping bags and food packaging – is diverted

Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival Some of you may have heard of the Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival – after all it’s been going for more than 90 years. Sadly last year we had to cancel due to Covid, but we’re planning to be back with a bang in October.

Retro Phone Reality With Apple’s iPhone 13 on its way in September, we ask if it would be possible to survive in the modern era with a 1st generation mobile phone. The iPhone1 was launched back in 2007, but it wasn’t until models 2, 3 and 4 did properly functionality arrive. For making and receive calls, the phone will still perform, as will the music player, voicemail, Google Maps, plus contacts, calendar,

photos, stocks, weather, clock, calculator and notes… but that’s about it. The YouTube app no longer works, and it wasn’t until iPhone2 did Apple install any ability to download new apps (via the App Store). Yes, that’s right, unless you ‘jailbreak’ the phone, there is zero prospect of adding What’s App, Instagram, The Trainline, Angry Birds or any other software application. The iPhone1 also lacked a 3G band, so unless you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, there’s no web browsing going on… just as well with only a four-hour battery life! The camera will still produce acceptable images, albeit on

an 8GB phone there’s little space to store them; and the 128MB of RAM means processing is painfully slow. And yet having this iconic model is still strangely appealing. We live our lives glued to our devices, so while using an iPhone1 in 2021 might not give you the connectivity you’re used to, it certainly would unite you again with the immediate world around you, and perhaps that’s no bad thing.

Increasing numbers of homeowners are choosing to hold their properties as tenants in common to cut inheritance tax, avoid care home fees and to protect their share The Property Protection Trust Will package is based around how you hold the ownership of your home. If one of you is still living in your home the Local Authority can’t include its value in the means test if one of you has to go in to long-term care. This also applies if the husband or wife still living at home dies while the other is in care as their share will go into the trust.

QUIRKY FACTS by Mica Bale Where could be better to enjoy the very heights of the British summer months than in Dorset? Whether you are staycationing or holidaying in this delicious slice of the country, surely nowhere could be better to enjoy seemingly never ending coastlines and inspiring landscapes? However, it has to be said that the Dorset we enjoy today has been shaped by its impressive heritage. To celebrate Dorset at its ﬁnest, here’s another handful of quirky facts from around the county. Did you know that the UK has only six native reptiles and Dorset’s Puddletown Forest can lay claim to having populations of all of these species? The forest has vital areas of heathland which is so important for sustaining these reptiles. Interestingly the sand lizard which is not only the largest British lizard but is also the rarest, has suﬀered some of the greatest decline in numbers however a recent project saw several hundred young sand lizards released into Puddletown Forest to introduce a population to the heathland in the hope of improving national numbers.

It's no secret that many writers and artists flock to Dorset to be inspired and certainly the county has produced many fine authors. Among their number was John Meade Falkner, the author of beloved smuggling and shipwrecking book Moonfleet, who was raised in Weymouth and Dorchester. The village of Moonfleet itself is based on East Fleet and Corfe Castle is another area which features heavily in the book. A trip to any one of the book’s locations is perfect for a fun day out with the kids, walking in the steps of Falkner’s characters. 54

Athelhampton is surely one of the county’s ﬁnest examples of Tudor architecture with origins dating as far back as at least 1485. Throughout history the country estate has been a stronghold for several powerful Dorset families however by the19th century the house was becoming a somewhat sorrier aﬀair and the Great Hall’s roof was in need of repair. Interestingly Thomas Hardy's father, also Thomas, was asked to help with these repairs with his profession as a stonemason. In a perhaps peculiar change of direction, in the years to come, the house his father had worked to preserve would later host the author. No doubt he was thankful the roof didn’t leak!

Did you know that the impressive Duke of Wellington sculpture in St. Paul’s Cathedral was the work of a Dorset local? Born in Blandford Forum, Alfred Stevens was the son of a joiner and decorator whose business he joined at the age of ten. His artistic talents were spotted at a young age and the local rector provided the funds for young Stevens to go and study in Italy. Upon his return the opportunity to create a memorial statue for one of Britain’s most respected historical ﬁgures was made public and ultimately it was the Dorset local’s design which won the commission. Alfred Stevens would create an impressive memorial which not only honoured Wellington but created a legacy of his work.

Never mind Wimbledon, were you aware that King Henry VIII was a frequent visitor to Walditch where he would enjoy a game of ‘real tennis’? This regal game of ‘real tennis’ was known as the ‘sport of the kings’ largely similar to lawn tennis however the game is known to have greater complexities than its commoner’s counterpart. The King was a great fan of real tennis and he even had such courts built at Hampton Court. No doubt he was always the winner. Long love the King!

From ballerina to racing driver - Emilia is waving the flag for Julia’s House! male-dominated environment. But more and more females are joining the racing world, which is fantastic!” She swapped ballet for motor racing when she was 16 years old, and now Emilia Vincent is waving the flag for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in the car she helped to build. The former Poole High School student is racing in the Castle Combe Hot Hatch Challenge Series this year. Emilia spent two years building the car along with her fellow student team for her degree in Motor Sport Engineering at Wiltshire College and University Centre, and was later chosen as one of the team’s racing driver. The 24-year-old hopes to raise awareness for Julia’s House with her fast-paced hobby and will be displaying the charity’s logo on her car in every race. Emilia says, “I want to help the charity and the families that are struggling in any way I can, so I’m racing for Julia’s House and I hope that spectators will acknowledge the logo on the car and want to find out more and make a donation, or do some fundraising themselves.”

Claudia Hickin, Fundraiser for Julia’s House, says, “We were so pleased when Emilia got in touch to ask if she could race for Julia’s House – I don’t think our logo has ever moved so fast! We feel very lucky to have the support of Emilia and her family, and it’s a wonderful way to raise awareness of our care for seriously ill children and their families in Dorset and Wiltshire.” Emilia is competing in the Castle Combe Hot Hatch Challenge Series, with two more races to go this season on 30 August and 18th September. Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Ingredients

(serves four)

For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Top Tips • If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier! • If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice. • If you don’t have access to a food processor simply rub the butter and ﬂour together until it is the texture of breadcrumbs.

Method

1. Put the ﬂour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingﬁlm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight. 2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins. Remove the paper and beans. Mix the berries, sugar and pour

the mixture into your baked pie base. 3. Roll out the second batch of pastry and top the pie with it, trimming to ﬁt, and using a fork to seal the edge. Use a sharp knife to create a few slits for steam to escape before brushing with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as ﬁlling will be extremely hot!
