Specialist Nurse conquers Everest at home for hospice charity An End of Life Nurse Specialist at Forest Holme Hospice in Poole has raised over £2,200 for the charity by climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest as she recovered from emergency back surgery. Vanessa Barents hurt her back out of blue over nine weeks ago and was taken to hospital for emergency surgery. She decided to use her recovery to raise some money for the hospice by walking up and down her stairs at home, until she reached the 17,475 steps needed to equal a climb to the summit of the world’s highest mountain. Vanessa, said, “I suffered a slipped disc in my lower back, which caused Cauda Equina Syndrome that affected my lower half really badly. I had emergency surgery to fix the problem, and as part of my rehab, I decided to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice, a charity very dear to my heart. Not only do I have the privilege of working for them, but I also see first-hand the amazing work that is done there. During the coronavirus outbreak, most of the charity’s fundraising has stopped, so I thought why not combine my rehab with raising money for the hospice.” Forest Holme Hospice provides end of life care and support to more than 1,000 local people each year with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses across Poole, Wimborne and Isle of Purbeck. Each year the Charity needs to raise at
least £850,000 to help enhance the NHS provision at the hospice and ensure that Forest Holme is there for patients and their family and friends during the most difficult time of their lives. However, this year due to the coronavirus pandemic the charity has forecast a loss of at least £350,000. Vanessa is currently up to 90% of her target on her Just Giving page and hopes now that she has completed her challenge and returned to work, she can encourage a few others to donate via https://www.justgiving. com/fundraising/vanessa-barents She added, “Any support would be amazing. The team at the hospice do such an amazing job with supporting palliative and end of life care, and need some extra support at the moment. Talking about Wildlife...
Reptiles: soaking up the sun in Dorset Like humans, rep�les love basking in the sun at this �me of year. In Dorset we are lucky to have lowland heathland habitat to support all six Bri�sh na�ve rep�le species. Rep�les are truly magnificent creatures, but they need a very specific habitat to thrive in and can be very sensi�ve to changes in their environment, which is why all rep�le species are legally protected. You also need a license to handle and monitor them. As rep�les are ectothermic (cold-blooded), they bask in the sun to warm up, and hide away in the shade to cool down again. During the colder months they hibernate, but in the summer months, rep�les will be enjoying the sunshine and feas�ng on the delights the heath has to offer, with lizards preying on spiders and insects and snakes favouring small mammals. As with lots of wildlife species in Dorset, their survival and success is largely due to having well-managed habitat to thrive in. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Great Heath team work hard on our heaths to ensure there is sandy soil, low vegeta�on and not too many trees, to create a dry and warm habitat for rep�les. Sand Lizard

Heritage: Christchurch Parochia The Domesday plans in my April 2020 article clearly demonstrated that, apart from Harbridge to the north and Twynham to the south, no significant holdings existed immediately west of the Avon at the time of Domesday in 1085. However, the two hundreds of Ringwood and “Edgegate” (based on a “lost name”, egheiete, later Christchurch hundred) share a straightboundary across the heaths to the east of the then Dorset boundary of the Moors River. However, at a recent Greyfriars series of talks, any Roman base at Chichester was probably just one of three “capitals” of the supportive British “king” Cogidubnus, whose eventual palace at Fishbourne rivalled the magnificence of those in Rome itself. Researches into Christchurch’s Saxon church by E.M. Cockain and K.C. Tullett were published in 2003 by Natula. This theoretical form of that building compared with the Priory Church by Cockain appears on its front cover. Their arguments centre on the crypt beneath the Priory Church being that of the earlier one, now known as the Malmesbury crypt. A prominent element concerns the siting of nine “altars” or chapels in or near the Saxon church, and their potential survival within the earliest parts of the priory during its building, to provide continuity of worship. Earliest records suggest a Saxon Vill of “Tweoxneam” (twixt two streams”) existed c.AD600, and that St. Birinus had
completed the conversion of Wessex c.AD640. This poses the potential of Ringwood’s first church being contemporary with Twynham. This building survived the erection of the cruciform 13th century church to become a free school in the 16th century, and was only demolished around the time of the building of the present St. Peter and St. Paul church 185355. A rectangular area near the Market Place entrance free from gravestones marks its potential position today. The Natula booklet speculates that building of the Priory church on the old mission church site began in 1094, when the town took on the name of Christchurch. Dean at the time was Ranulf Flambard, a chief minister under William Rufus. A large “parochia” developed, extending from the old Bournemouth/Poole boundary to Southampton Water, and from the coast to the boundary with Ellingham (i.e., my “line”), as seen in this plan. A slightly different version per P.D. Hase appears in the booklet, whereby Ringwood is included, and Burley an outlying area in an “exparochia section”, but no Isle of Wight. As the “mother” church, the Priory served the “daughter” churches indicate by crosses, and presumably smaller chapels marked by dots. These would have been served by canons travelling to or lodging

15 there. Parishioners would have been obliged to attend at the Priory Church for all the major festivals, some up to fifteen miles, for many on foot. The Augustinian canons held considerable land collectively. Three deeds are recorded in the booklet, one towards Salisbury in AD946; another on Barrack Road, no date; and the third in AD1053 at Bashley. At the dissolution, in 1539 the monastic buildings were demolished, but, supported by Prior Draper, the church was given to the town by Henry VIII in perpetuity, confirmed by James I in 1612. Given the booklet’s limited scope, there is no record of other acquisitions, but among these must be Hurn farm, once home for elderly priors. At one stage its lands were given to a member of Queen Jane Seymour’s family, who had kept clear of the political machinations of other family members that eventually led to their executions. By the 18th Century, the farm and its considerable lands were in private ownership, with several stretches of fishing rights on the banks of the Moors River, of which a plan is available. Edward Cooper and later his son died without any heir, and it all passed to the Harris family via an aunt in 1795. Diplomat James Harris, as Baron Malmesbury, became involved in arrangements for Prinny’s disastrous marriage to Caroline of Brunswick, but received his earldom in 1800. His son Viscount FitzHarris extended the
farmhouse to become today’s Hurn Court, and by 1840 their lands had expanded to most of those as far as our “line” and elsewhere. This is a 19th century engraving of the Priory Church. The local ecclesiastical parochial areas remained into the early 20th century, such that the original 1912 “All Saints” church was still being supported by Christchurch, despite Ringwood having taken responsibility for the old poor law areas above Sandy, later “Boundary”, Lane since the 1890s. Creation of St. Leonards and St. Ives civil parish in 1932 only added to the confusion as the ecclesiastical one was still known as “St. Ives and St. Leonards”. This late 1960s aerial view includes the adjacent 1777 Priory House. It was not until 1962 that a separate ecclesiastical Parish with its own vicar was created, which then took the same name as the civil one. Today, as numbers of worshippers decline, matters have taken a new turn, with Ringwood as the “governing” church for a grouping now covering Bisterne, Poulner and Ellingham. Plus ca change. John Hawkins Author’s note: I have had my Natula booklet since its publication. Late 2019 neither the Priory nor Natula could advise me on contacting the authors. The only picture used here is the combination one from its cover, while my text is based on several sources, including my own researches since 2005. Recent receipt of a copy of their 1801 Inclosure Award has prompted plans for a new Meeting House archive file, dedicated to Christchurch.

Step Up For 2,500-Mile Charity Challenge Wessex Cancer Trust is inviting supporters to step up for its 2,500-mile challenge - by walking the distance between its support centres 20 times - at Walk for Hope 2020. The cancer charity’s flagship fundraising event, which was due to be held in the New Forest in June, returns in a different format this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday 6 September, walkers will come together virtually to clock up the target mileage as a team by completing 20 laps of a route which links the charity’s four support centres in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. You can do your bit by signing up to walk five, ten or 20 miles, and you can do it on your own or with friends and family, at your own pace and wherever you choose. Charlotte von Sicard, Wessex Cancer Trust’s regional community manager, said: “Many of our Walk for Hope participants have or have had cancer, so although social distancing measures are easing, we know it’s still a really anxious time for some people and we didn’t feel it would be responsible to plan for a large gathering. Even though our walkers can’t be together physically this year, we’re still all in this together, so Walk for Hope is the perfect way to unite and work as a team to cover 2,500 miles! Last year 300 people took part and together they raised £50,000 which has made a huge difference to the lives of local people. Please help us to complete 20 laps
around our support centres and make 2020 the biggest and best Walk for Hope yet!” King of the Jungle and Wessex Cancer Trust’s patron, Harry Redknapp, said: “It’s been a tough few months for everyone, but cancer doesn’t stop and throughout the pandemic Wessex Cancer Trust has kept its services going for anyone who needs it. This is despite not being able to raise money by holding outdoor events. Walk for Hope is normally its biggest fundraiser so it would be fantastic to see as many people as possible out walking in their local areas. Let’s raise as much money as we can for people who really need it.” You can register at www.walkforhope.co.uk and set up your fundraising page. You can also link your Strava or FitBit to it. There’s also a fundraising leaderboard to help you monitor your progress and compete with friends and family. Registration is £10 with a fundraising goal of £100 per person. Entrants receive an official Walk for Hope t-shirt, a fundraising pack, a training and event guide, and membership to a Facebook group where they can meet other participants and share fundraising and training tips. Wessex Cancer Trust uses all of the money raised to provide practical and emotional support to anyone living with cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight. Understanding Investments: Passive vs Active Investing
With interest rates at all time lows, and by all commentary likely to remain there for several years, savers require solutions other than cash to enable their money to retain its real value (after inflation). Investing becomes a necessity rather than a luxury. I’ve written about how to select the right level of risk through multi-asset funds and how to then control that risk on an ongoing basis through ongoing investment management. Now I will briefly explain two different methods of investment management; passive and active. Active Investment Management: The aim is to beat the return from a particular index or benchmark (eg FTSE 100). Fund managers seek to do this by using their knowledge and skill to analyse the market. They then buy shares, bonds or property which they believe are presently undervalued and so have the potential to increase in price over time. The managers utilise in-depth research to find hidden value. Passive Investment Management: A passive fund replicates a specific index via computer driven programmes to offer a diversified spread of investments in a specific market. There is no research to endeavour to beat the market, but because the fund is replicating an index, there should be no underperformance of the market. Should you invest in active or passive investments? Comparing the two approaches, charges will be higher with an active manager, due to the necessary research and analysis but a good fund manager/fund can significantly outperform the index, even after the higher charges. The risk is that they may not, and you’ve still paid more for the service.
Passive investing is low cost, so each and every year you pay less in charges but still Howard Goodship get the benefit of a diversified investment portfolio. As an investor, the saving in charges remain in your pocket and over time these can be substantial. However, the risk is that if the index falls or remains level, your fund will follow and is unable to outperform. In conclusion, there is no right or wrong approach. In fact, I often advocate a combination of the two for my clients with a percentage of their investments benefitting from lower charges in the passive solutions and a percentage of their investments benefitting from high quality, active management. This adds further diversification and in combination with investing into multiasset portfolios which are rebalanced on an ongoing basis, reduces the overall risk to my client’s portfolios. The Dorset Publications Camper Van As a family we have always loved “Treasure Trails, the fun way to explore”. Looking on their website www.treasuretrails.co.uk Daichi found an ideal one, as he could literally join in the fun too. This trail was a drive / walk expedition to recover a father and son who had gone missing while exploring some of the old ball clay mines! Of course, that was fictional, but don’t tell Daichi as he really thought he was being a detective for the day. It was perfect - 20 miles searching for clues around our wonderful Isle of Purbeck. Daichi was up early, roaring his engine, picnic packed and coats at the ready just in case. It was windy but bright. Let’s get those clues and save the day! Now, did you know that the name ‘ball clay’ came about as the clay was extracted by hand and during the transportation the large cube corners become rounded. There are many Ball Clay Mines on the Isle of Purbeck. Also, did you know that Wedgewood bone china, the world’s finest china, is renowned to have a secret ingredient… and that secret ingredient is Purbeck Ball Clay? Shush…. Don’t tell anyone!

Daichi admires the church at Knowlton Our first destination, hiding our first clue, was in the picturesque village of Church Knowlton. Tiny, with an idyllic thatched cottage and a Church that instantly throws you back to bygone days of village life and farming. There is something about that lifestyle, hard graft, but long and flowing dresses worn on a Sunday for Church with children running around mischievously, that I find rather appealing. Daichi was dazzled with the beauty and serenity. We found clues in the Church graveyard and as I also have a rather odd fascination with reading very old gravestones, this was right up my street. Or should I say headstone? Daichi’s engine shuddered as we moved to our next clue which was at the entrance to the Margaret Green Animal Rescue Centre. What an incredible village. Treasure Trails is a process of elimination. This one had 21 clues with 21 locations the father and son could be. Stephen, myself and Hayden like to have a game between us, where we guess at the start what the answer is. There is a prize if one of us gets it right! It all adds to the anticipation, as we eliminate the clues one by one.

29 This was a trail, not only of clue finding, but also of discovery and learning. We discovered the memorial of The Creech Barrow Seven, who were seven local men ready to defend their country in the second World War. We learned that Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books went to Durnford School in this area and that he was allegedly inspired by a real-life spy, John Bond, an ancestor to the Bond family who lived at Creech Grange House on our route. The family’s motto, inscribed in Latin on a wall there, is “The world is not enough” which of course is the title to James Bond’s 21st movie. The picturesque estate was sold for around £3.5 million a couple of years ago. Nice. We drove passed Tyneham, the lost village, which is a whole story in itself and one for another day. Passed the Springfield Hotel and into the car park of East Holme Farm Shop. Of course, we had to buy some healthy food after ticking off a few more clues, before setting off again. We stopped for lunch overlooking the gorgeous rolling hills. Terrific views and Daichi was so pleased to give us shelter from the wind, so that we could eat, thoroughly enjoy the space and relax in comfort. Oh, this is the campervan life. On to Stoborough where they were several good clues to find. Then up to Stoborough

Cruise ship in Bournemouth Bay Heath National Nature Reserve. Just Beautiful. Magnificent in fact. We went on to discover the Engine Shed, now a listed building which housed the engines of the old Tramway. By chance the owner arrived and we had a chat! The lanes, the countryside, the views here on the Isle of Purbeck really are stunning. What a beautiful county Dorset is. The journey ended at Norden Park and Ride. Norden is such an iconic station and so well preserved. We did not see any trains other than those engines stationed on the tracks, but all that searching, history discovery, picnic and photography meant we had arrived after 6pm on a Sunday. One clue here was tricky to find. It is possible the data had been removed, but by now, with only a few clues left we did an intelligent process of elimination and are pretty sure we knew where Ben and his boy were! Phew I say. None of us had guessed it right at the beginning, but hey, it was a wonderful day. We were all winners. Daichi was in his element and so were we. We ended our expedition overlooking the incredible green hills flowing into the sea at Poole and Bournemouth. Cruise Liners bobbing on the horizon. Just gorgeous. Where will Daichi take us next? 10 local artists and theatre makers commissioned to create engaging work to help beat isolation during lockdown In March 2020 the UK went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May 2020 Activate promoted an opportunity for artists and theatre makers to submit their ideas for ways to engage communities through this strange and often isolating - experience. Now the artistic projects, Creative Communities in Quarantine, are ready for the public to engage with. 10 Dorset-based artists, including Harry Potter star Rohan Gotobed (who played young Sirius Black), have been offered £500 each, plus the expertise and support of the Activate producers to see their projects come to life. The projects include collecting memories from the residents of Sherborne, sensory audio stories for care home residents, outdoor adventures for 3-6 year olds, wildwriting workshops, audio postcards for those living with dementia and flag-making to thank local heroes. Kate Wood, Artistic and Executive Director, Activate Performing Arts, said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer these micro commissions to local artists. Many people are seeing the benefits of art and culture while we have to stay at home so it’s important for us to support this in our local area. As an organisation we want to support

Mini Maisie’s Journal – UpsideUp Theatre Company bring to life a paper character. Children aged 3-6 can join Mini Maisie on her adventures through video and downloadable activity packs. Wildwriting! Dorset – Join Sarah Acton from Black Ven poetry on a series of 6 Wildwriting adventures - a new one will be released each week. Going online – Millstream Theatre are looking to create more work online and require a digital artist to help them do so. Applications now open. Beside the Sea – Frenetic Fox Theatre are working with four Dorset care homes to bring memories of the seaside alive for those living with dementia. Audio Postcards – Artist Megan Dunford is working with In Jolly Good Company to create audio postcards with older people in the rural area of Wimborne St. Giles. The Quaranteens – BACStage Youth Theatre are going online and Zooming their way through lockdown.

On Your Plot If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very sa sfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is ini ally followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courge es and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events! Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very o�en they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same me. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long me before you are harves ng fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a li le planning and now is the me to do it. Onions (and garlic) that have been li�ed and le� to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or ghts, also work if you don’t fancy plai ng. Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courge es can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what be er gi� than a pot of homemade raspberry jam? It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how li le informa on there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful li le book, that deals with just this ques on is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed. with informa on about how to store just about anything and a great addi on to any gardeners library.

Oceanarium Bournemouth Re-opens! The Oceanarium Bournemouth, has finally been able to re-open on Monday 6th July after 15 weeks of closure. During this time, staff has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the premises is safe to welcome back visitors without compromising the experience. A few changes have been made to the offer to allow social distancing; however all the Oceanarium’s collection of aquatic animals can still be viewed and enjoyed including Penguins. Sharks and Turtles. UK Director James Eels said: “Our team has worked very hard to ensure we could reopen, in a safe and secure manor. I am extremely happy that we were able to open our doors again on Monday the 6th July, and welcome back our visitors and members. The day was a great success with positive feedback from the visitors joining us on opening day!” “The great thing about a visit to the Oceanarium is that visitors can enjoy a touch free visit without losing any of the experience and as such we believe our aquarium is one of the safest indoor attractions to visit in these unique times.” “We have reduced our capacity and staggered arrival time slots to ensure all visitor’s and staff can practise social distancing and therefore introduced a new booking system to facilitate this. We would like to thank visitors for co-operating with us, whilst we all get used to the new way of working”. To guarantee entry, visitors are advised to purchase tickets online, along with booking a dedicated arrival time slot. If a visitor hasn’t booked tickets, they are more than welcome to join the queue, and can enter if there is still availability. If not, they will be
asked to return at a later time. Visitors will need to follow the new oneway route in place, adhere to the social distancing markers at all times, and make use of the hand sanitizing stations provided. Visitors bringing pushchairs, will need to keep them on their person as the push chair park is currently closed. All cleaning regimes have been significantly enhanced. Toilets are open but with limited capacity and are manned by attendants. Unfortunately, the kids play area remains closed, and all animal experiences have been suspended for the time being. The Offshore Café has re-opened with a limited capacity and offering eat in and takeaway. The aquarium has an onsite Visitor Services Team that will be able to help with queries and questions. Tastes so good... MINI PIZZAS
With these Mini Pizzas you really have the chance to make them your own. Cover them with tomato and cheese and then pick from any number of topping choices: Pineapple and ham, pepperoni or even chicken and sweetcorn. Alternatively create your own unique toppings.
Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt
Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C Method: In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another sheet with flour before splitting the dough into 8. Roll 3 balls thinly into circles and put them on the floured sheet. Use a thin layer of sauce on top with some seasoning and cheese of your choice. Bake for 12 minutes until golden then add fresh toppings of your choice and use the rest of the dough to create more!
